Thousands flock to flower festival

Thousands of people in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi began visiting
the annual spring flower festival that opened on Jan.26.

A Spring Flower and Drinks Fair which opened in Hanoi will see some
last-minute politicking for the selection of Vietnam 's national
flower.

The fair will also feature a photo
exhibition by HCM City-based photographer Tran Bich dedicated to the
lotus, a leading candidate for designation as the national flower.

Bich is dedicated to photographing the lotus, and his images capture
the many shapes of the lotus, from bud to faded flower.

Orchids, peach and ochna blossoms are also in contention for the title of national flower, however.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will gather votes on the
national flower, national costume and national wine during the festival,
and the national flower will be announced on Jan.28 at the Vietnam
Lotus Spirit Gala.

At the Lotus Spirit Gala,
artisans from Hanoi , Hue and HCM City will create crafts and
artworks celebrating the lotus, including lotus lanterns and sculpture
and silk lotus.

"We have used many materials to
celebrate the lotus," said Hanoi-based artist Nguyen Manh Hung. "Since
it's not the season of the lotus in the north now, we have received
fresh lotus from the southern province of Dong Thap ."

The competition to select the national costume hasn't gone as smoothly.

"The ao dai is already the national costume for women, but it's
difficult to choose the national costume for men," said Vi Kien Thanh,
chief of the ministry's art, photography and exhibitions department.

Meanwhile, the selection of a national wine plan is still in the
survey stage, Thanh said. Over the past three years, the Ministry of
Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the
Vietmam Alcohol, Beer and Beverage Association have nominated ruou can
(wine drunk from a jar), rice wine, coconut wine and apricot wine for
the honour.

The Spring Flowers and Drinks Festival will continue through Jan.30 at the Culture and Art Centre at 2 Hoa Lu street .

The fair will exhibit and offer prizes for wines and spirits made by
both traditional and modern methods, offer opportunities to sample
wines, tea and coffee, and will feature performances, folk games, an ao
dai (traditional long dress) fashion show, and calligraphy exhibition,
as well as recreate customs such as the Kitchen Gods Festival. At least
50 enterprises will also display products for Tet, including decorations
and ornamental trees.

Ha Giang province will take
the spotlight, recreating a provincial market day with local
specialities, cuisine and festivities of the province's ethnic people,
including pan-pipe dance and folk duets.

The
week-long event, which will last until February 1, a day ahead of the
Lunar New Year, displays the beauty of Vietnamese flora in Phu My Hung
Residential Area, HCM City .

This festival
hopes to attract around 500 booths, displaying all kinds of flowers,
plants, birds, fish, ceramics and calligraphy.

This
year's flower festival in HCM City is expected to attract
thousands visitors with a rich assortment of blossoms.

The Phu My Hung Spring Flower Festival 2011 features a contest of
special Vietnamese flowers and ornamental trees, called Hoa Dong Co Noi
(Flower of Countryside).

Nguyen Thien Tich, vice
chairman of the municipal Association of Orchids and Ornamental Trees,
said, "It's a chance for everyone to explore the abundant flora in the
country."

The country has more than 12,000 flowers and other kinds of plants.

Along with the contests, the week-long festival will include other
activities such as a ceremony to release flowers and garlands, and
floating lanterns on Ban Nguyet Lake .

The lake will be decorated with giant lotus flowers, which will be lit for photo opportunities.

Different festival areas include Cat Square with flowers arranged
in the shapes of cats, the ochna, apricot and peach blossom section, 12
animal designations of the lunar calendar and the legend about the man,
Mai An Tiem, who discovered the watermelon.

There will be music shows at the festival every night until the evening of February 1.

The festival, co-organised by Phu My Hung Joint Venture Company and
HCM City Ornamental Creature Association, expects to attract more than
500 enterprises displaying flowers, fruit and Tet (Lunar New Year)
products.

Last year, more than 500,000 visitors visited the flower festival held in the residential area.

The majority of these products were produced in the city and outlying areas.

Also on Jan.26, 30 flower markets opened around the city to welcome
city dwellers shopping to decorate their houses during the New Year's
days.

Flower exhibitions will be held at major parks
like Gia Dinh, Le Van Tam and September 23. Ochna, kumquat and daisy
are among the most popular.

In District 8, flowers
carried by boats from the Mekong Delta are being displayed along the
canal at Ben Binh Dong. The market recalls the hectic trading activity
of Sai Gon 100 years ago.

Around 25 flower markets in districts 5, 6, 10, 11, Go Vap, Tan Phu, Thu Duc, Binh Tan and Cu Chi have opened./.

US-based footballer eyes Vietnam national team

Vietnamese-American footballer Lee Nguyen, who played for the US national squad in 2007 as substitutes, is applying for Vietnamese citizenship to be eligible to play in the Vietnamese national team.

The 24-year-old midfielder, who is working for Binh Duong FC, told Tuoi Tre that filing for Vietnam naturalization is an initial move aimed at being called into the Vietnamese national football team in the future.

“It is his legitimate aspirations and so, we will offer him legal support to attain the status,” said Binh Duong club’s general director Doan Van Ut.

Nguyen almost rose to stardom after returning to play for Vietnam’s top-flight V-League club Hoang Anh Gia Lai in 2009 and scored 12 goals from his 24 appearances.

He had appeared in the US side as substitutes to play against Paraguay and Colombia at the 2007 Copa America and staged a friendly match with China, but scored none.

According to FIFA regulation, a player who joins the national team of a country from the starting line-up and plays no more than three games is still permitted to play for other national team.

Thus, the plan of Lee Nguyen to play for Vietnam is still within his reach if he is granted citizenship and selected by head coach of Vietnam, according to Vietnam’s football governing body – VFF general secretary Tran Quoc Tuan.

Hanoi T&T win Super Cup 2011 in penalty shootout

HCMC – Hanoi T&T won the Super Cup for the first time after beating Song Lam Nghe An 4-2 in a penalty shootout at Hang Day Stadium in Hanoi yesterday, picking up VND150 million in cash.

They drew 2-2 in the official time, Edmun Owusu and Nguyen Trong Hoang scored for Song Lam Nghe An in the 53rd and 69th minutes but Cao Sy Cuong and Cristiano Roland leveled the score for the home side in the 81st minute and injury time.

Backed by thousands of spectators, the home team totally controlled the first half while Song Lam Nghe An played defensively and relied on rare counter attacks.

Both sides created scoring chances but the score was goalless upon the referee’s whistle at the end of the half.

In the second half, Song Lam placed more attacks on their opponent defenders in search for a goal and Edmun Owusu opened for the National Cup winners in the 53rd minute.

Hanoi T&T bounced back after the goal and their players dominated the ball possession but the home side forwards squandered chances.

Midfielder Nguyen Trong Hoang doubled for the visitors in the 69th minute. However, Cao Sy Cuong narrowed the score for Hanoi T&T in the 81st minute before Cristiano Roland leveled the score at 2-2 in the injury time.

In the shoot-out, Hanoi T&T goalkeeper Nguyen Duc Thang made a brilliant save from Nguyen Van Quyet’s kick to be the hero for his team while Tran Dinh Dong and  Nguyen Trong Hoang failed to score in their penalty shootouts for Song Lam Nghe An.

The runners up received VND70 million in cash.

To mark the start of the football season, the Super Cup is held every year between the previous season’s National Football Championship winner and the winner of the National Cup.

Hanoi T&T won the premier league in June while Song Lam Nghe An defeated two-time V-League champions Hoang Anh Gia Lai 1-0 in the National Cup final in August.

Last year, National Cup winners Lam Son Thanh Hoa won the Super Cup after defeating V-League champions SHB Danang 4-3 in a penalty shoot-out at Ninh Binh Stadium in northern Ninh Binh Province. The Super Cup was organized for the first time in 1998.

It is the 12th year that the event has been organized by Tien Phong (Vanguard) newspaper and the Vietnam Football Federation. The 584 Group is the cup’s sponsors.

The National Cup 2011 began on Saturday. The tournament has attracted 27 teams from the premier V-League and the First Division, competing in knock-out format.

The Vietnam League will open on February 22 and the First Division Tournament will begin two days earlier. The two that are most important tournaments of Vietnamese football will close on August 21 and 20, respectively.

Yes or no for naturalized players in national squad?

In our discussion on whether Vietnam should recruit naturalized foreign footballers for the national team, currently a hot topic after Vietnam’s early exit at Suzuki Cup, respected football analyst Nguyen Van Vinh turns the question on its head.

“Does Malaysia have any naturalized foreign players on its team?” he asked.

“Whatever you do with naturalized players is OK, as long as it is to improve domestic football in Vietnam,” the former coach and technical director of V-League club Hoang Anh Gia Lai told Tuoi Tre.

He added that we could not compare foreign players being granted citizenship in Vietnam with similar stories in other countries.

“The difference is the way and motivation we grant citizenship to them,” Vinh said.

In foreign countries, a player of foreign origin is only given the honor if he or she is well integrated into the local culture and society.

An example, the Germans -- who are much proud of their stock -- introduced their national football squad to the 2010 World Cup Finals in South Africa in June with 11 players of foreign origin.

They are, however, almost 100 percent Germans before learning to play football, Vinh said, adding that they grow up and rely on professional training in Germany to become talented. As such, they should not raise any eyebrow when given the honor to don the national cap and play for the national team.

In Vietnam, non-native footballers came to Vietnam on a football contract with local clubs and were later awarded citizenship with strong legal support from their clubs.

The reason these clubs wanted to naturalize these foreigners is to evade the local rule capping the number of foreign players on any team at three.

Consequently, admitting naturalized players into the Vietnamese national team cannot help improve the domestic football landscape.

“The national football team of Malaysia include all domestic players, but can still advance to the finals of the ongoing Suzuki Cup,” Vinh said.

The bottom line is, to make the Vietnamese national team stronger relies on well thought-out development plan, not on the use of naturalized players, according to the expert.

Hai Phong Cement have signed Tu Huu Phuoc on a two year deal from Khatoco Khanh Hoa.

Phuoc was an ideal choice for Hai Phong due to his high levels of fitness and ability to cope with aerial pressure, however, he does lack experience.

Calisto warns of grueling times ahead

calisto
National football coach Henrique Calisto (1st,left) warns of grueling times ahead for the national team
Photo: Tuoi Tre

National football coach Henrique Calisto, who returned to Hanoi from Portugal Wednesday, told Tuoi Tre he is anxious since the short training camps do not seem adequate considering what the team will soon come up against.

You have included both greenhorns and veterans in the team …

As I say, the door to the national team is wide open to all competent footballers. What I have done just mirrors that viewpoint.

So why have you recalled Huy Hoang, Van Quyen, and Van Truong who have not played for the national teams for years?

Though they committed some mistakes in the past, they have paid for them. So now if they can prove that their returns are worthy and they can be pillars of strength for the team, why cannot I give them the opportunity?

I have appraised them thoroughly and recognized their desire, and they have performed rather well in the V-League. So they meet the minimum requirements to be included.

But Van Quyen was often on the bench during the last season. Can he do well for the national team?

Including someone in the national team is my responsibility, but playing depends on their own effort. So do not think that just because they are included they will play.

Since Quyen seems overweight for a professional footballer, I will have specific tactics for him as I did at the 2002 Tiger Cup in Indonesia.

What will be the first thing for you to do when the two teams meet next Monday?

Health check, since most of our players seem to have used up their physical and mental strengths in the national league. So I have to check to know who should get enhanced physical or mental training or both.

I need my boys to be at their fittest physically and mentally so that they can withstand harsh competition during the last selection.

How many footballers will play in the minor football league for the 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi, and how many of the U-23 team will go to India for the friendly match on September 14?

There may be 20 for the former, but I have yet to decide on the exact number for the latter since I have to work with my assistants and the VFF for a final decision.

But I will not take all 30 boys to India so that they can continue training at home.

But the national squad now has only 27 players. So are the remaining spots meant for SHB Danang players?

If they meet my requirements and have no injuries, they can join after finishing duty at the AFC Cup.

Organisers said the North Korea will send its senior team, of which 10 played at the World Cup in June.

Viet Nam will begin training at their Ha Noi-based camp on September 5.

Cambodian team to train at Gia Lai

The Cambodian national football team will start a 45-day training session at Gia Lai's Ham Rong Sports Centre at the end of this month, Hoang Anh Gia Lai team manager Tran Van Minh said.

The training tour resulted from a co-operation agreement signed between the Gia Lai-based club and the Cambodian Football Federation.

The centre has acted as home for twice V-League champions Hoang Anh Gia Lai since 2000.

National team member suspended

V-League Khanh Hoa winger Le Tan Tai received a two match suspension and VND10 million (US$520) fine for his behaviour during the match against Ninh Binh on Sunday.

National team member Tai slapped fellow national team-mate Dang Van Thanh's face after a scuffle just three minutes into the game, which saw Ninh Binh beat the hosts 2-0, at Nha Trang Stadium. — VNS
