Son Ha Cup starts next week

HCMC – The national football teams from Singapore, North Korea and hosts Vietnam together with the U23 team of South Korea will compete in the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) Son Ha Cup early next month.

The four teams will compete in the round-robin tournament from November 2-6 at My Dinh National Stadium in Hanoi.

The Vietnamese team will be fielding their strongest squad in hopes of keeping the cup in Vietnam.

The tournament is considered the final test for both Vietnam and Singapore before the Southeast Asian championship/AFF Suzuki Cup 2010, which will be held in Vietnam and Indonesia from December 1 to 29.

The chief coach of the national football team Coach Henrique Calisto and his squad will be making their final preparations to defend the AFF-Suzuki Cup where Vietnam have been drawn in Group B with Singapore, the Philippines and Myanmar.

Henrique Calisto announced his squad of 24 players for Son Ha Cup two weeks ago. However, star striker Le Cong Vinh, who has returned from Portugal from a ligament operation, has lost his chance with the national squad because of injury.

According to the organizers, the two Korean teams are sending their strongest players. The South Korean team are the hot favourites though they are sending a 23-member squad.

The North Korean team are also said to be strong with six of their best players coming who attended the World Cup 2010 in South Africa in June.

The North Korean team will feature six key players including goalkeepers Ri Myong-guk and Ri Kang; defender Ji Jun Nam; midfielders Pak Chol-jin, Mun In Guk and Kim Kyong Il.

Vietnam’s national team will clash with South Korea’s U-23s in the opening game of the tournament on November 2 while Singapore will meet North Korea in their opener on the same day.

The VFF Cup, which used to be known as the Agribank Cup, has been held annually since 2004. Vietnam won the title in 2005 and 2009 and were runners-up in 2004, 2006 and 2008.

The Vietnam Football Federation also signed a three-year sponsorship contract with Son Ha Group. The winners of the Son Ha Cup will receive a trophy and US$20,000. The runner-up will be awarded US$10,000, while the third-place team will receive US$5,000. The sponsor will also award US$1,000 to the first scorer.

Tickets for the international football tournament will go on sale at outlets in Hanoi on Saturday, the organizing committee has announced. The tickets, priced between VND80,000-150,000 (US$4-US$7.5), will also be available at www.eleale.com.

Dong Nai wins U.21 trophy after penalty shootout

Dong Nai wins U.21 trophy after penalty shootoutDong Nai took the 2010 National U.21 football championship after beating powerhouse Nghe An 5-4 in a penalty shootout at Gia Lai Province’s Pleiku Stadium on Sunday.

They had already beaten Nghe An 1-0 win in their group’s opening match, but this was a much closer match.

Nghe An played with lots of caution, but had to pick up after conceding the first goal just five minutes into the game.

They succeeded in scoring an equalizer just 10 minutes later, Trong Phi firing a shot that goalkeeper Thanh Diep could not reach.

Charged up by the equalizer, Nghe An’s young players launched more attacks, putting Dong Nai under great pressure. The team showed why it was able to three consecutive national U.21 championships from 2000 to 2002.

The team capitalized on one of the opportunities they created to take the lead midway through the first half.

After the break, Dong Nai’s striker Tuan Anh collected a neat pass from The Hung and made the score 2-2 after taking a neat pass from The Hung.

However, the team fell behind shortly afterwards, with Nghe An’s fast counterattack paying off. Trong Phi and Dinh Bao combined beautifully before striker Dinh Bao beat goalkeeper Diep with a powerful shot from outside the penalty area.

Dong Nai refused to give up, and just minutes from full time, they found the equalizer when Thanh Tan scored from a free kick.

No more goals were scored in the match, and the champions had to be chosen after a penalty shootout.

Both sides were successful in their first four tries but Nghe An’s Trong Phi failed to get his shot past the Dong Nai custodian, while Van Quyen fired in Dong Nai’s fifth shot without fuss.

Dong Nai’s victory in the National U.21 football championship is all the more impressive considering it is only the second tie that they were participating in the event.

National U.21 football event gets underway

National U.21 football event gets underwayThe 2010 National U.21 Football Final Round will stay true to its “green-clean and beautiful, “policy, Thanh Nien Media Corporation Chairman Nguyen Cong Khe said at a press conference in Gia Lai Province on Wednesday,

Khe, chief of the October-7-to-17 event organizing committee, also said they would consistently work to improve the quality of the game.

“The U.21 tournament will always be a healthy playground where young talents are found for Vietnamese football.”

It is also a stepping stone for many young players to join the National U23 squad and the National team and help young players improve and make contributions to their clubs, as well, Khe said.

The past 13 national events and three international U.21 events (also sponsored by Thanh Nien) have found and introduced good players who have been key to the success of the national teams.

Some of these people include Cong Vinh, Hong Son, Tan Tai and Quang Hai who together helped earn Vietnam the Suzuki ASEAN Football Federation Cup in 2008.

The organizers of the 14th youth football tournament in Pleiku Town have decided to allow free entry to the matches.
