Bodybuilders snatch silvers in Oman Games

MUSCAT, Oman — Vietnamese bodybuilders grabbed three silvers and one bronze from the second Asian Beach Games which is ongoing in Muscat, Oman.

Top athlete Pham Van Mach who is the Asian defending champion failed to persuade judges yesterday that he was worth gold in the men's under-60kg category.

The gold medal went to Indonesian Asrelawndi, while Thai Jiraphan Pongkam took the bronze.

Mach's teammate Nguyen Van Lam added the second silver for Viet Nam in the men's under-65kg class. The silver of the HCM City-based athlete was unexpected as he came to Muscat to protect his crown.

Lam who grabbed a gold medal from 2009 Asian championship and a world bronze medal three years ago failed to defend the title which went to Somkhit Sumethowetchakun of Thailand. Viet Nam's Nguyen Truong Giang took the bronze.

Nguyen Hai Au who started his international career with a title from the recent Southeast Asian tournament continued competing successfully with the third silver for Viet Nam in the men's under-70kg pool.

Somsri Turinthaisong 70kg ranked third for a bronze.

Sazali Abd Samad of Malaysia showed his beautiful body form yesterday to enjoy glory in this pool.

The second Asian Beach Games which will close on December 16 drew more than 2,000 athletes and coaches from 45 countries and territories. The 48 member strong Vietnamese delegation will take part in seven events. The team set the target of taking from one to two gold medals this time. — VNS

Vietnam wins last bronze at ASIAD 16

Vietnam won another bronze medal on Nov. 26, closing the 16th Asian
Games (ASIAD) with one gold, 17 silver and 15 bronze medals, ranking
23rd in the medal tally after 13 days of competition in Guangzhou,
China.


The bronze was earned by chess players Hoang Thi Bao Tram, Pham Thi Thao
Nguyen, Nguyen Thi Thanh An, Nguyen Thi Mai Huong and Nguyen Thi Tuong
Van in the women’s team event.


The same day, karate
martial artist Nguyen Minh Phung triumphed over his rivals from
Tajikistan and Qatar in the men’s 75kg category. However, he lost 0-1 to
China and 3-4 to Kim Do Won from the Republic of Korea in the battle
for the bronze medal.


Meanwhile, female karate
martial artist Bui Thi Trieu won 6-0 over Nepal in the 61kg category in
the first round of eight, but lost to her Uzbekistan opponent in the
next round.


Wrestlers Luong Thi Quyen and Pham Thi
Hue in the women’s 63kg and 55kg category, respectively, performed
unsuccessfully in the first round of eight. Wrestler Tran Thi Hoa also
failed to win a bronze after losing to rival Manyurova Guzel from
Kazakhstan in the women’s 72kg category.


The majority of medals belonged to China with 192 gold, 113 silver and 96 bronze, followed by the Republic of Korea and Japan./.

HA NOI — Wushu martial artists sailed to three silvers in the fifth day of competition at the Asian Games yesterday.

Nguyen Thi Bich took a silver medal after losing to Chinese E Meidie in the final sanshou (combat) event of the women's 52kg weight category at Nansha Gymnasium.

Her teammate Phan Van Hau failed to overpower host Li Xinjie in the men's 56kg class final earlier in the day while Nguyen Van Tuan was defeated by Chinese Zhang Junyong in the men's 65kg final, forcing both to settle for silver.

Vietnamese Taekwondo athletes earned three bronze medals in their debut at the Asian Games yesterday.

Duong Thanh Tam and Nguyen Trong Cuong battled to bronze in the men's 74kg and 87kg weight categories, while Vu Thi Hau added one more to the women's team in the 49kg class.

In tennis, Nguyen Hoang Thien took a 0-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Al Nabhani Mohammed of Oman in the men's singles first round at the Aoti Tennis Centre.

The 15-year-old and his teammate Le Quoc Khanh then cruised past Qatari Al Mutawa and Zayed 6-2, 6-3 in the men's doubles later in the day.

In the other men's singles match, Vietnamese Do Minh Quan also dominated his opponent, Pariva Jeetendra from Nepal, in two sets, 6-1, 6-1.

On the badminton court, Nguyen Tien Minh waltzed over Parupalli Kashyap from India 21-14, 21-20 in the men's singles round of 32.

As of yesterday, Viet Nam has won seven silver and 10 bronze medals in the medal tally. — VNS

A total of 98 international squads participated in the 12-day tournament.

Thirteen Vietnamese athletes took part in seven of 26 competitions at the event which attracted some 5,000 athletes aged 14-17 from around the world.

The Vietnamese athletes won a gold medal in the men’s 56kg weightlifting contest, a silver in the women’s 55kg taekwondo category and two bronze medals in the men’s 55kg taekwondo category and women singles’ badminton event.

China finished on top with 30 gold, 16 silver, and five bronze medals, followed by Russia with 19 gold, 14 silver and 13 bronze medals and South Korea in third with 11 gold, four silver and four bronze medals.

The USA finished thirteenth with four gold, nine silver and nine bronze medals while hosts Singapore came in 62nd place with two silver and four bronze medals.

Thailand topped the Southeast Asian region with four gold and three silver medals, finishing in the 14th position.

Malaysia finished 65th with two silver medals while Indonesia was in 84th place with just one bronze medal.

Trang bags bronze in badminton

Badminton player Vu Thi Trang beat England's Sarah Milne 2-0 to take a bronze medal in the women's singles at the Youth Olympics, Singapore yesterday.

It was a major achievement for the 18-year-old player as she recorded wins to bag Viet Nam's second bronze of the games.

The Vietnamese squad have won one gold, one silver and two bronze medals.

In the swimming yesterday, Nguyen Thi Kim Tuyen failed to take a final berth in the women's 100m butterfly, finishing sixth in the semi-final.

Meanwhile Hoang Quy Phuoc failed to progress in the men's 100m freestyle, finishing fifth in the heat.

Teenager cashes in on Olympic gold

Weightlifter Thach Kim Tuan, who won the men's 56kg class gold at the Youth Olympics in Singapore on Sunday, will receive a VND150 million (US$7,500) cash award from the national Sport Administration and HCM City.

Tuan will receive $5,200 from the national Sport Administration, while HCM City will provide him with a cash supplement of VND11 million ($570) each month, excluding monthly payments, nutrition budget and awards.

VN face tough rivals Kuwait

Viet Nam will meet Kuwait's U-23 squad in the opener of a tournament to mark the 1,000 anniversary of capital on September 20, the organising committee announced yesterday.

The tournament will see four teams including the U-23 squads of Kuwait and Australia.

Organisers said the North Korea will send its senior team, of which 10 played at the World Cup in June.

Viet Nam will begin training at their Ha Noi-based camp on September 5.

Cambodian team to train at Gia Lai

The Cambodian national football team will start a 45-day training session at Gia Lai's Ham Rong Sports Centre at the end of this month, Hoang Anh Gia Lai team manager Tran Van Minh said.

The training tour resulted from a co-operation agreement signed between the Gia Lai-based club and the Cambodian Football Federation.

The centre has acted as home for twice V-League champions Hoang Anh Gia Lai since 2000.

National team member suspended

V-League Khanh Hoa winger Le Tan Tai received a two match suspension and VND10 million (US$520) fine for his behaviour during the match against Ninh Binh on Sunday.

National team member Tai slapped fellow national team-mate Dang Van Thanh's face after a scuffle just three minutes into the game, which saw Ninh Binh beat the hosts 2-0, at Nha Trang Stadium. — VNS
