Bayern beat Inter Milan in Champions League

Mario Gomez scored a last minute winner to put Bayern Munich firmly in control of their last 16 Champions League tie against Inter Milan on Wednesday.

The Germans' 1-0 success meant that all three remaining Italian teams in the competition lost their second round home legs and all face the prospect of crashing out at this stage with tougher away games still to come.

For Bayern it also went some way to exacting revenge for their Champions League final defeat to Inter in Madrid back in May.

Gomez said his goal was rich reward for Bayern's positive approach to the game.

"That was certainly my most important goal in the Champions League," he said.

"When you score a goal just before the end, which seals an away win, that is, of course, very nice.

"We fought for everything, everything at the back, everything up front and we were rewarded at the end."

Inter coach Leonardo said that despite the defeat his side are still in a good position to progress.

"Of course it's a bad defeat but the only thing that changes is your mood, it doesn't change the game in Munich where we'll go and try to win," he said.

"Nothing is compromised. It's hard to lose in the last minute but we played well."

Bayern almost handed Inter a dream start with some shocking defending in the second minute as Andrea Ranocchia was left alone eight yards out to meet a Wesley Sneijder free-kick but he flicked it wide.

The Germans had two quick chances but Lucio blocked a Franck Ribery shot and center-back partner Ranocchia got in the way of a Thomas Mueller effort.

With the Inter defence backing off Luiz Gustavo tried his luck from 25 yards but it flashed just wide.

And moments later he had a crack from 30 yards that took a wicked deflection and almost looped into the top corner.

It wasn't all Bayern as brilliant work from Samuel Eto’o down the right saw him beat Holger Badstuber and feed the ball inside to Esteban Cambiasso six yards out but Thomas Kraft got out well to block his hurried shot.

Eto'o was skinning Badstuber every time and Bayern coach Louis van Gaal acted in the first half, bringing on Brazilian Breno to marshal the speedy Cameroon captain.

Bayern came closest to a first-half goal when an inviting inswinging cross from Arjen Robben on 24 minutes found Ribery stealing across his marker to flick a header onto the bar.

Another great move from Bayern saw Robben slip the ball between two defenders for captain Philipp Lahm, whose cross picked out Gomez but he spooned his effort into the night sky.

On 33 minutes a snap-shot on the turn from Eto'o forced Kraft into a diving one-handed save.

Robben created the chance of the match for Mueller two minutes after the restart but from inside the six yard box the young German somehow flicked his header wide of the far post.

And then on a lightning counter after Inter gave the ball away in midfield, Robben ran across the defence and hit the outside of the post with a right-footed effort.

Bayern were next to give the ball away in a perilous position and after Kraft saved from Eto'o, Cambiasso blazed the follow-up over the bar.

Robben also sent a rasping effort over the bar up the other end while Mueller almost found Gomez with a chip over the top.

With 10 minutes left Inter had a sniff of goal but Kraft stood up to Houssine Kharja's cross-shot while a deflected Sneijder free-kick then landed on the roof of the net.

From the resultant corner Thiago Motta headed straight at Kraft from eight yards and an Eto'o shot was also deflected wide as the hosts suddenly started to push for a winner.

But then in the last minute Julio Cesar, who hadn't made a save of note all night, failed to hold a skimming drive from Robben and Gomez tapped home the rebound.

Canadian-Vietnamese boy skates to fame

A 12-year-old boy of Vietnamese origin has skated into the history of
the Canadian figure skating as the youngest ever winner of the Canadian
Juvenile Figure Skating Championships held early this year.

The
triumph, made in the male single’s event, is the latest that broad
smile-wearing Nam Nguyen has scooped from the ice-rink in Canada , a
nation strong in skating.

The boy earned his first championship
title at the Juveniles Male Championship in at age of eight, just three
years after taking up the sport.

Two years later, Nam shined on
the rink again bagging two more championship titles in different age
groups at the Canadian Figure Skating Championship, namely Pre-Novice
and Novice.

The Canadian Press called Nam the skater of the
future while his coach, Joanne McLeod, who has trained many figure
skating champions in Canada , praised him for possessing a high
degree of musical absorbability and performing skills.

The
current Grade 7 Brentwood Park Elementary Public School student said
“When going over there, my goal wasn’t to beat the older guys. It was to
lay down a fantastic skate and to entertain.”

Nam Nguyen has
showed he is committed to the sport in the long term as he writes on his
own blog that “I am passionate about figure skating. I am very
dedicated to my skating.”

Together with these championship
titles, Nam Nguyen has also been hailed as a charming performer as he
confidently took the rink with such well-known figure skaters in the
world as Even Lysacek from the US and Patrick Chan from Canada at major
events.

The boy unveiled that his immediate goal is to represent
Canada at the Grand Prix Figure Skating Competition hosted by the
World Figure Skating Association in September this year.

He also
looks to finish in the top 5 of the Canadian Figure Skating
Championships scheduled for January 2012 and represent Canada at the
world skating championships and the Winter Olympics in 2014./.

Aeroflot champ Liem wants to be No 1

Grandmaster Le Quang Liem of Vietnam, who defended his championship title at the 2011 Aeroflot Open last week in Russia, returned home to a warm welcome at Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh City Monday.

The 20-year-old player had an interview with local media.

What are your targets this year?

They are to take part in some elite chess tournaments including the Dortmund Sparkassen event in Germany in July, World Cup in Russia in August, and the 26th SEA Games in Indonesia in November.

In addition, I will also join some other international tournaments wearing the jerseys of Germany’s Bremen chess club in March, France’s Every Grand Roque in April and China’s Qingdao Yucai in June.

I target to lift up my Elo ratings to 2,700 this year. [Now, his is 2,689.]

And other long-term targets?

It is to take my Elo ratings to the world’s top 30 and 20 and the number one in the world.

I have another task of completing my university program. I am now a freshman of finance and banking at the Saigon University.

Is it a trouble to follow at the same time two targets?

I take all my free time from chess competition for my banking studies. It’s difficult but I will improve.

What kind of support do you need from local and central sports departments to improve your world rankings?

I’ve met difficulties in legal documents to travel abroad for competition. I wish to have an official passport [granted to government officials on overseas missions], instead of ordinary passport to facilitate my travel.

For example, while competing at the Tata Steel chess tournament held last month in the Netherlands, coach Lam Minh Chau and I had to travel far away to another city for our visas to enter Russia as the Russian Embassy in Vietnam was on holiday for the Lunar New Year festival.

It would not cost that much time with an official passport.

How is your chess training now?

I mainly learn chess by competing with rivals on the Internet as no coach or expert in Vietnam is qualified to train a grandmaster.

What do you plan to do on your birthday on March 13?

As previous years, I celebrate it with my family and friends.

The Vietnamese government has given financial support to Liem for overseas competition.

As for international open tournaments, Ho Chi Minh City Sports Department is in charge of covering costs for his competition trips. Other events like the Olympic Games, Asian Games and Sea Games, Vietnam Chess Federation will cover his expenses.

Liem eager to play for German team

HA NOI — International Grand Master (IGM) Le Quang Liem has agreed to compete for Germany's Bremen chess club from next month, Liem's father Le Quynh confirmed yesterday.

Liem, 20, will leave for Germany for March 18-19 following the signing of a two-month contract with the Bremen club, allowing Liem to compete in the German Chess tournament.

The HCM City-born grandmaster will receive payment from US$700-1,400 for each game he plays, excluding win bonuses, accommodation and air tickets.

"Liem was offered a contract by a Spanish chess club after he won the Russian International Chess Festival – Aeroflot Open in Moscow last week, but he previously signed with Bremen and French team Evry Grand Roque. Chinese Qingdao Yucai also invited Liem to play in the China's Chess League Division A, however, the agreement has yet to finalised," Quynh told Viet Nam News yesterday.

As the German Chess tournament is played monthly, the HCM City's player can travel forth and back between Viet Nam and Germany according to the German fixtures.

The 20-year-old will also play for the Evry Grand Roque Club in the French Chess League Top 16 this June when athletes will finish their match in a nine-game format over two weeks.

The International Grand Master is the first player to win the Aeroflot Open twice in a row, which has earned him an elo rate of 2,689 in March's World Chess Federation (FIDE) rankings and a place in the world top 50.

"It's not the first time a Vietnamese player has competed abroad. Over the past years, Vietnamese players have played for Chinese teams on short-term contracts," said the Viet Nam Chess Federation (VCF)'s vice chairman and general secretary Dang Tat Thang.

"A clutch of top athletes including Le Thanh Tu, Hoang Thi Bao Tram, Dao Thien Hai and Pham Le Thao Nguyen have played for Chinese teams. They both improved their skills and income from competitions abroad," Thang said.

He also added the federation always gave the green light to chess players wanting to compete for foreign clubs.

Liem was conferred the International Grand Master title following the Chess Olympiad in Turin in 2006.

The IGM said he had to overcome the pressure of his new found success to improve his world rankings at international tournaments this year.

Liem, who is a first year student at the Finance and Bank faculty of HCM City University, has to arrange time between his college studies and competitions.

Last year, Liem grabbed a silver medal at the Asian Games in Guangzhou, China. — VNS

Benzema gives Real edge in Champions League

Karim Benzema scored against his former club Lyon to earn Real Madrid a 1-1 draw here on Tuesday, while Chelsea made an impressive 2-0 win over FC Copenhagen to hold a strong position to reach the Champions League quarterfinals.

Benzema put the visitors 1-0 up moments after coming on as a second-half substitute at a damp and chilly Stade Gerland, only for Bafetimbi Gomis to equalize seven minutes from time.

Gomis's late volley extended Lyon's remarkable unbeaten record against Real to seven matches, but Benzema's away goal makes Jose Mourinho's side slight favorites to progress ahead of the second leg in Madrid on March 16.

"I feel like I watched a real Champions League match: hard and well contested with very few clear chances due to the defensive rigor on both sides," said Real coach Mourinho.

"In the second half we managed to find spaces and, to begin with, we were closer to a second goal than Lyon were to an equalizer.

"But it sets things up well for the second leg, where we will hope to qualify in front of our supporters."

Lyon eliminated Real at the same stage of last season's competition and the nine-time European champions are bidding to end an unwelcome run that has seen them fall in the round of 16 for the last six seasons in a row.

Lyon, meanwhile, are seeking to build on their first ever semi-final appearance last year and coach Claude Puel admitted he was disappointed that Real had managed to breach his side's defence.

"At home, in the first leg, we would have preferred them not to score," he said. "It's a bit of a shame, especially because we played a great first half."

Having beaten Real in their three previous encounters on home turf, Lyon began the game in enterprising style, their five-man midfield smothering the visitors' attempts to play the ball through the middle.

Michel Bastos stabbed a shot over the Real crossbar from a tight angle on the right, Cris hooked wide from just inside the penalty area and Cesar Delgado had a penalty appeal turned down after an untidy foul by Sergio Ramos.

Angel di Maria belatedly called Lyon goalkeeper Hugo Lloris into action with a weak low shot before the France number one was given slightly more to do by a stinging Cristiano Ronaldo free-kick.

It was not long before the hosts were back on the attack, however, and Gomis was guilty of a terrible miss in the 34th minute when he side-footed over an open goal after Iker Casillas spilled a cross from Bastos.

Lyon's re-emergence after half-time drew a thunderous roar from the home fans, but a reminder of Real's attacking threat was quick to arrive as the visitors struck the woodwork twice in a matter of minutes.

Ronaldo hit the far post with a dipping free-kick from a seemingly prohibitive angle on the left-hand side, before Ramos sent a header crashing against the crossbar from Mesut Ozil's in-swinging corner.

Ronaldo's free-kick will have a more lasting impact on the tie, however, as it was awarded for a foul by Bastos on Di Maria that earned the Brazilian a yellow card that rules him out of the return leg.

Another Ronaldo free-kick sparked controversy shortly beyond the hour, with the Portuguese adamant the ball had struck the arm of Yoann Gourcuff in the Lyon wall.

Benzema, who left Lyon for the Bernabeu in 2009, received a rapturous reception when he entered the fray but he silenced the crowd after barely a minute.

Receiving a pass from Ronaldo, he drove across the area in a horizontal line before keeping his cool to beat Lloris with a low shot that Cris vainly sought to keep out with a desperate goal-line lunge.

Lyon's proud unbeaten record against Real looked destined to come to an end until the 83rd minute, when Gomis atoned for his earlier miss by seizing upon a flick-on from a free-kick to volley into the bottom-left corner.

Nicolas Anelka of Chelsea celebrates after his second goal against FC Copenhagen during their UEFA Champions League round of 16 first leg football match at Parken stadium in Copenhagen. Chelsea won 2-0

After the misery of last weekend's FA Cup exit against Everton, Nicolas Anelka gave Blues boss Ancelotti some much-needed breathing space as his double-strike put Chelsea within touching distance of the Champions League quarterfinals.

Ancelotti opted to leave Didier Drogba on the bench as he played a 4-4-2 formation with Anelka and Torres spearheading the attack.

Anelka showed his class as he netted two clinical finishes to take his tally in Europe this season to seven goals in six games, while Torres went close to breaking his duck following his blockbuster move from Liverpool.

Anelka opened the scoring in the 17th minute when he pounced on a poor pass by former Chelsea winger Jesper Gronkjaer and drove home a fierce strike from the edge of the area.

The former Arsenal forward struck again in the 54th minute as he drilled Frank Lampard's pass into the bottom corner.

Drogba has been out of form lately but he remains a formidable option to have on the bench and Ancelotti insists the trio won't complain about being rotated to keep them fresh for an assault on the Champions League.

Asked if they were the best in Europe, Ancelotti said: "Yes, I think so. We want to maintain their fitness, but rotation could do them good with the Premier League and the Champions League.

"They are accepting my decisions without problems, and this is important. To have them available at the moment, it's important at this time of year.

"We have fantastic strikers. I have to make a decision about the games, to put them in or not.

"Didier played for two hours against Everton. Torres and Anelka were fresh and, together, they played well."

Three preliminary jobs before Liem excels at world chess

After brilliantly defending his title at the Aeroflot Open 2011 in Russia last week, grandmaster Le Quang Liem has become a prominent figure in a long-term plan of Vietnam to propel him to the world’s top spot in the future.

Ranking 79th in the world with an Elo rating of 2,664 in the January’s table, the 20-year-old player is estimated to have lifted himself up to an Elo of 2,689 after clinching the title and may surge to the top 40 at this month’s table, to be released soon.

Vietnam Chess Federation Deputy-General Secretary Nguyen Phuoc Trung sent Tuoi Tre a letter explaining the three preliminary jobs that must be accomplished before Liem can dream the impossible dream of becoming the World Chess champion.

First of all, Liem must make an unequivocal decision either to enter the professional sporting career with chess or to go on with his study, as he is a freshman of finance and banking at Saigon University at the moment.

Given the fact that all top-rated sportsmen in the world are professionals, it seems unlikely that Liem can take on both chess and study and excel in either of them, Trung said.

Becoming a professional, Liem will have time to map out a strategic route for training and competition. He can decide which tournament to enter to accumulate knowledge, which one to take to test his new chess strategies and which one to win to hike up his Elo points.

“I believe Liem will have a bright future at the Chess World Cup in 2013 if he chooses to enter the professional sports,” Trung writes in the letter.

Secondly, Liem’s bright future in world chess, however, depends on how the government of Vietnam plans and implements the “national strategy of investment” for Liem.

Vietnam has long struggled to better its status in world sports. Its goal, nevertheless, is simply to get out of the “under-developed zone”, never to reach the top spot and dominate the international world of sports.

It is clear that in the world of professional sports, individual effort alone is never enough to take an athlete to the top position. In Liem’s case, it requires a lot of national support and a careful “national investment plan.”

That is, Trung said, sports leaders of Vietnam should assist with a suitable strategy to help Liem develop his chess talent and scale the height of his sporting career.

Last but not the least is the question of money.

Liem needs all the help of qualified trainers and assisting staff he can get in his daily training and competition.

“He needs money to develop into a world-class player, as we can’t ask him to win all the tournaments he takes part in and use the prize money to cover for all the costs he incurred,” Trung concluded.

Inter's 2-0 victory at the Bernabeu that night gave the Nerazzurri the treble of Serie A, Italian Cup and Champions League while Bayern were left with the Bundesliga and German Cup double.

Nine months on, both teams are struggling to live up to such high standards.

Bayern's hopes of retaining the Bundesliga title look all but over having dropped 13 points behind leaders Borussia Dortmund.

"It's pretty much impossible for Bayern to win the Bundesliga this season in my opinion," forward Arjen Robben told Kicker magazine.

"I'd say that we have more chance of winning the Champions League than scooping the domestic title."

Inter, who fired Jose Mourinho's replacement Rafael Benitez in December, are third in Serie A, five points behind leaders AC Milan, although they have looked much brighter in attack since ex-AC Milan boss Leonardo took over.

Inter, who fielded eight South Americans in their starting line-up in last May's final, will be missing Argentine forward Diego Milito, who is out with a hamstring strain.

Milito, the scorer of both goals in the final, is likely to be replaced by Goran Pandev, with Samuel Eto'o the other forward.

Wesley Sneijder and Lucio missed Saturday's 1-0 Serie A win over Cagliari with knocks but are expected to return for the Bayern game given its importance, even if the Dutchman will not be 100 percent fit after a groin problem.

Cristian Chivu is available after a domestic ban, and his greater experience means he is likely to come in for Japan's Yuto Nagatomo at left-back.

'Robbery” reliance

Apart from a long-term injury to forward Ivica Olic, Bayern are at full strength, with Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben both available.

Flamboyant coach Louis van Gaal, however, refused to accept that his team are reliant on the "Robbery" duo, whose injuries were blamed for Bayern's poor first half to the season.

"In my opinion, we are not dependent on Robben and Ribery," Van Gaal said after Saturday's 3-1 win at Mainz 05.

"We have lots of good players and we need them all to play well. Footballers also need a good trainer."

Striker Mario Gomez, the Bundesliga's top scorer this season, said on Monday he was fit despite suffering an ankle injury against Mainz. Goalkeeper Thomas Kraft, who went off at half-time after a blow to the head, should line up for his first Champions League knockout tie.

Inter Milan: 1-Julio Cesar; 13-Maicon, 15-Andrea Ranocchia, 6-Lucio, 26-Cristian Chivu; 4-Javier Zanetti, 19-Esteban Cambiasso, 8-Thiago Motta; 10-Wesley Sneijder; 27-Goran Pandev, 9-Samuel Eto'o

Bayern Munich: 35-Thomas Kraft; 21-Philipp Lahm, 28-Holger Badstuber, 44-Anatoliy Tymoshchuk, 23-Danijel Pranjic; 31-Bastian Schweinsteiger, 10-Arjen Robben, 7-Franck Ribery, 30-Luiz Gustavo; 25-Thomas Mueller, 33-Mario Gomez.

HA NOI — Vietnamese track and fields athletes have a chance to take part in the 13th World Athletics Championship in South Korea, according to standards just released by the International Association of Athletics Federation.

A and B standards are to be applied to participants. Vietnamese seeking opportunities are: women's 100m and 200m Vu Thi Huong, 800m and 1,500m Truong Thanh Hang, men's decathlon Vu Van Huyen.

Huong has to run 100m in 11.38sec and the 200m in 23.30, and Hang must run 800m in 2:01.30 and 1500 in 4:08.90, both to meet the B standard.

Huong last December broke the national record in the National Sport Games' 200m event with similar result to the standard while her seasonal best in the 100m was 11.34 at the 25th SEA Games' 100m in Laos in 2009.

Da Nang-based Hang has the chance run in South Korea if she can maintain the times she ran at the 16th Asian Games in Guangzhou last November.

Hang earned two silver medals in her two events with times of 2:00.91 and 4:08.22, respectively. Both are better than the B standard.

The runners' tasks now are to maintain their results.

The Vietnamese are also likely to qualify for the London Olympics next year because the standards applied for that even are lower than that of the world competition in South Korea.

Hang and Huong will receive intensive support this year. Huong will take part in a long-term training course in Germany while Hang will train in China or Bhutan.

They will return home ahead of the Asian Athletics Championship in Kobe, Japan, on July 7-10. If they qualify they will compete in the world championship from August 27 to September 4 in Daegu City.

Meanwhile, "Iron" man Huyen has to achieve 8,000 points to reach the B standard.

Real look to Mourinho magic to end Lyon jinx

Jose Mourinho ended Chelsea's half a century wait for an English title, he brought European Cup glory back to Inter Milan after 45 years and now he battles Olympique Lyon's mesmeric hold over mighty Real Madrid.

If there was ever a man to conquer a hoodoo it is the Portuguese coach but he has more than one jinx to deal with in Tuesday's Champions League last-16 first leg in France.

Lyon have beaten Real at home three times in a row in the competition including last year where they condemned the Spaniards to their sixth successive last 16 elimination.

Overcoming Claude Puel's team and the mental block of quarterfinal progress will be no mean feat but Mourinho, as ever, oozes the confidence that prompted the nine-times winners to appoint him last May.

"No one keeps me awake, neither Lyon nor anyone else," the outspoken Mourinho told reporters after Saturday's comfortable 2-0 La Liga win at home to Levante where he rested several players.

"The night I don't sleep well is after the match. Ever since we drew Lyon we have been following them. (Real consultant Zinedine) Zidane knows them and has been giving me information."

On a personal note, Mourinho is bidding to become the first coach to win the Champions League with three different clubs after stunning the European game with Porto's 2004 triumph and then taking just two seasons to mould a winning side at Inter.

May's victory in the final over Bayern Munich is still fresh in his memory but with the brilliance of Cristiano Ronaldo and pumped-up striker Karim Benzema returning to face his former team, Mourinho's prospects look as good as with Inter last year.

Bicycle kick

Lyon will not just have recent form against Real on their side at the Stade de Gerland.

Their domestic performances have shown a marked improvement of late with a 4-1 derby win at St Etienne and Friday's 4-0 home thumping of AS Nancy boding well.

"You can see that pressure makes us give the best of ourselves," Puel told reporters.

France playmaker Yoann Gourcuff, bought from Girondins Bordeaux in August as a marquee signing, has finally found his verve after a slow start and Jimmy Briand's bicycle kick goal against Nancy was on a par with Wayne Rooney's recent effort.

The only worries for Lyon are goalkeeper Hugo Lloris's bad cold, although he is expected to return against Real, and striker Lisandro Lopez's hamstring problem which is likely to keep the Argentine out of the game.

"Lisandro is slightly injured, his participation against Real is in doubt." added Puel, who has had a series of run-ins with the forward.

Probable teams:

Olympique Lyon: 1-Hugo Lloris; 13-Anthony Reveillere, 3-Cris, 5-Dejan Lovren, 20-Aly Cissokho; 6-Kim Kallstrom, 28-Jeremy Toulalan, 29-Yoann Gourcuff; 11-Michel Bastos, 18-Bafetimbi Gomis, 7-Jimmy Briand

Real Madrid: 1-Iker Casillas; 17-Alvaro Arbeloa, 2-Ricardo Carvalho, 3-Pepe, 4-Sergio Ramos; 14-Xabi Alonso, 24-Sami Khedira; 7-Cristiano Ronaldo, 23-Mesut Ozil, 22-Angel Di Maria; 9-Karim Benzema

HA NOI — Song Lam Nghe An took the lead of the V-League Eximbank Cup after beating Hoa Phat Ha Noi 2-1 on Saturday.

The central team fought back to win in a thrilling match against the tough rivals on their home turf.

Striker Timothy Anjembe from Nigeria scored to help Ha Noi gain an early 1-0 lead 10 minutes into the game.

Fagan Andre Diego scored the equalising goal 16 minutes into the second half before Kavin Eltroy Bryan netted a ball during the 85th minute.

The win put Nghe An on top of the V-League with seven points, one point clear of SHB Da Nang who beat Ha Noi T&T 2-0 earlier at Ha Noi's Hang Day Stadium on Friday.

Khatoco Khanh Hoa, who stunned V-League two-time champions Becamex Binh Duong 3-1 on Saturday, are holding third place with six points.

Defending champions Ha Noi T&T dropped to fourth place with six points after a 2-0 loss to Da Nang.

Hoang Anh Gia Lai secured their first win in the V-League after beating newly-promoted Ha Noi ACB 3-1 in the capital city on Saturday.

Also on Saturday, Navibank Sai Gon crushed Lam Son Thanh Hoa 3-1. Vicem Hai Phong were held to a 1-1 draw by Dong Thap at Hai Phong's Lach Tray Stadium, while Ninh Binh were defeated by Dong Tam Long An 2-1 at home.

Bayern brush off Mainz to go second

Defending champions Bayern Munich went second in the Bundesliga on Saturday night with a 3-1 win at Mainz, while league leaders Borussia Dortmund went 13-points clear with a 2-0 win over St Pauli.

Germany striker Mario Gomez, the league's top scorer, completed Bayern's rout with his 18th goal in 21 league games with a late strike after midfielders Bastian Schweinsteiger and Thomas Mueller had put Bayern ahead.

Mainz's Tunisia striker Sami Allagui scored a late consolation goal for the hosts, but Bayern warmed-up for Wednesday's Champions League last 16 game at holders Inter Milan with a win.

With Bayer Leverkusen playing relegation-threatened Stuttgart on Sunday, Bayern took their chance to go second, by virtue of a superior goal difference as play-makers Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery dominated Mainz.

"It was a fight, but we deserved the win," said Bayern's Mueller.

"With Franck and Arjen in the team, we play with a completely different quality."

Dortmund stay on course for their first league title since 2002 with a home win over Hamburg-based St Pauli after Paraguay forward Lucas Barrios netted for the tenth time this season six minutes before the half-time break.

He then made sure Dortmund took all three points with a 49th-minute shot that took a deflection off St Pauli defender Ralph Gunesch on the way into the net for an own goal.

"The team kept their concentration and were very disciplined," said Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp as his side picked up their first win of the month after drawing their previous two games.

"After talking about taking our chances, the team passed the test. We definitely earned the victory."

Leverkusen are still without ex-Germany captain Michael Ballack, who is expected to start on the bench after picking up a knee injury recently.

Hanover are fourth in the table after a 3-0 win over Kaiserslautern, with former Germany striker Jan Schlaudraff netting twice.

Hamburg coach Armin Veh left Dutch hot-shot Ruud van Nistelrooy on the bench for his side's 4-0 win over Werder Bremen on Saturday.

Van Nistelrooy has been unsettled in the Hanseatic city since former club Real Madrid tried to lure him back to Spain in January.

In the Dutchman's absence Peru striker Jose Guerrero netted twice, to leave Bremen just a point above the bottom three, while Hamburg are seventh.

Freiburg's Senegal striker Papiss Demba Cisse netted his 16th goal in 21 league games this season with a superb strike as he held off several defenders before stabbing the ball home on 70 minutes to seal a 2-1 win over Wolfsburg.

The defeat leaves Wolfsburg just a point above a relegation place as they lost again after sacking ex-England coach Steve McClaren a fortnight ago.

Cologne continue to pick up points and showed their fighting spirit with a 1-1 draw against Hoffenheim.

Nuremberg are up to eighth in the Bundesliga after their impressive 3-0 victory, their fourth straight win, against Eintracht Frankfurt on Friday night.

On Sunday, bottom side Borussia Moenchengladbach host Schalke 04, who drew 1-1 with Valencia in Spain in the last 16 of the Champions League in mid-week.

Fergie slams lacklustre United after Crawley test

Sir Alex Ferguson accused his Manchester United players of failing to understand the importance of the FA Cup after the 11-times winners struggled to reach the sixth round at the expense of non-League opposition.

The Premier League leaders were given an uncomfortable time by Crawley Town before edging past the team from the fifth tier of English football 1-0 at Old Trafford on Saturday to book a quarter-final spot.

But United's victory came at a cost as Anderson, Rafael da Silva and Fabio da Silva were injured and are now all doubtful for Wednesday's Champions League game away to Marseille.

Ferguson made his feelings clear after his players failed to perform.

Although the likes of Edwin van der Sar, Patrice Evra, Nemanja Vidic and Dimitar Berbatov were given the afternoon off, the likes of Bebe, Michael Carrick and Gabriel Obertan failed to impress.

"Some players came in and didn't do themselves justice. No doubt about that," said Ferguson.

"In the second half, we weren't at the races. It was disappointing. We might have some players who don't understand what the FA Cup is all about. That is the biggest lesson for them."

Anderson suffered a hamstring problem while brothers Rafael and Fabio da Silva also suffered knocks.

Ferguson said he will assess them before deciding whether they are capable of making the midweek journey to France.

"It was a big problem, having to take our two full-backs off and Anderson with his hamstring," added the United manager.

"It unbalances the team. We will assess them on Sunday. We had to play Darren Fletcher at right-back and he did well, but it didn't help."

Ferguson was full of praise for Crawley, who were denied a replay when substitute Richard Brodie hit the woodwork in stoppage time in front of their 9,000 travelling fans at Old Trafford.

"All the criticism about the FA Cup, it tells you what it means to a small club like Crawley," added Ferguson.

"They showed more desire in the second half. They made it very difficult for us. We were second to every ball. They could have equalized. They deserved a draw really, we never had a shot at goal in the second half.

"First half we did very well, no complaints. We could have been three or four up. It wasn't to be and if you are only 1-0 up in a cup-tie it only takes a second to lose a goal, and we nearly did."

Crawley did not leave Old Trafford completely empty handed. They will make over one million pounds (1.6 million dollars) from the tie via television rights and gate receipts from a sellout 75,000 crowd.

Manager Steve Evans challenged his players to use the performance as a springboard to win promotion to the Football League.

"We want to play in the Football League but there are some good clubs trying to stop us," said Evans.

"I am very proud of my players. I've spoken to Alex and he's given me a bottle of wine to take away."
