Ha Noi set for inaugural lawn bowling tourney

The first Ha Noi Lawn Bowling Open will start from tomorrow to Sunday at Ha Noi-based My Dinh Sports Centre.

The event will attract six clubs from Ha Noi, Gia Lai, Phu Tho and Quang Ninh.

Viet Nam is the sixth country to develop the event in Southeast Asia. Vietnamese Ha Kha Luan, chairman of the Ha Noi Club, is the first deputy chairman of Southeast Asian Lawn Bowling Federation.

Lawn Bowling will soon get under way in HCM City, Nha Trang, Kien Giang and Nam Dinh to develop a strong force in preparation for international events such as the World Lawn Bowling Championship and Asian Beach Games.

Vietnamese archers take silvers at Asian Grand Prix

Archer Nguyen Tien Cuong took a silver medal at the three-stringed bow event, or compound, in the first round of the Asian Archery Grand Prix in Thailand on Tuesday.

Cuong defeated many strong rivals and was only defeated by former Chinese Atlanta Olympics and Sydney Olympics champion Tang Hua.

The gold medallist in the same event in 2008, Cuong and his team-mates also pocketed a silver medal at the men's team event.

Vietnamese archers will continue to compete in the second round in Vientiane in Laos on April 21-27 and the third round in Dakha, Bangladesh, on May 25-31.

Asian football's honcho to visit Viet Nam on Sunday

Asian Football Confederation (AFC) chairman Mohamed Bin Hammam will pay a visit to Viet Nam on Sunday.

He will attend the HCM City League tournament as part of the Vision Viet Nam-Vision Asia programme organised by the AFC.

This programme was developed in Viet Nam in 2004. It was implemented successfully in Long An and HCM City.

An AFC Vision Asia team will visit Hue at the end of February to assess the suitability of the Vietnamese city for the implementation of the Vision Asia development programme. — VNS

Vietnam poetry festival highlights Uncle Ho

The late President Ho Chi Minh was in the spotlight at Vietnam Poetry
Day, held at the Temple of Literature in Hanoi on February 17,
an annual event to celebrate the Lunar New Year.

The event, featuring poems about Vietnam ’s first president,
celebrated the 100 th anniversary of Uncle Ho leaving the nation in his
quest for national salvation (1911) and the 70 th anniversary of his
return to his native land after dozens of years living abroad.

The event opened with a ritual bringing water from Pac Bo spring in
the northern mountainous province of Cao Bang, which sheltered the
national leader during his first days of return, and an earth ritual to
bring a handful of soil from his native village in the central province
of Nghe An to the cultural temple as sacred objects of the event.

The Vietnam Writers’ Association President, Nguyen Huu Thinh, himself
a poet, presented a poetry collection about the late President
including 30 poems by foreign authors such as Madlain Riffaud.

A similar event with the same topic was also held in Ho Chi Minh City
on the same day, drawing over 350 members of the municipal writers’
club and hundreds of poetry lovers./.

Windsurfing Fun Cup at Jibes in Mui Ne this weekend

Binh Thuan Province and Jibe’s Beach Club will hold the 12th NOA Vietnam Fun Cup for windsurfing on February 18 and 19.

“We are expecting between 25-40 amateur riders to enter. There are Vietnamese riders and people coming especially for the event from Taiwan and Thailand,” organizer and the owner of Jibes, Pascal Lefebvre, said

“It will be a mixed crowd – often there are 12-15 nationalities represented,” Lefebvre said

Jibe’s Beach Club Mui Ne will host the opening ceremony on Friday at 10am and the award presentation on Saturday at 7.30 pm followed by a beach party with sails being auctioned for charity.

Main events are figure eight slalom racing for men and women over two days. Official referees from Binh Thuan Province sport department will be ruling the event.

Lefebvre said the people to watch will be a few professional riders that will use the amateur event to train for the big international PWA event that starts at Jibes the following week.

He said the number three windsurfer in the world, Cyril Moussilmani from France, will be competing in the Fun Cup to train for next week’s PWA, but he wouldn’t qualify for any prizes as the Fun Cup is only for amateurs.

The first prizes for both men and women are luxury Swiss NOA watches valued at around US$5000, second prizes are a windsurf board valued at 1500 euros and third prizes are windsurf sails valued atUS$700.

All profits of the event will be donated to charity organizations in Binh Thuan Province.

Golf experiences new wave of popularity

HCM CITY — Golf has been played in western countries for centuries and has recently become even more popular all over the world. It will also be added to the Olympics in 2016.

Following an interruption due to war, golf made a comeback to Viet Nam along with the country's global integration.

In recent years the sport has begun gaining popularity with the advent of many good golf courses, domestic and international competitions, as well as the establishment of local golf associations like the Ha Noi Golf Association.

The Viet Nam Golf Association lists some of the highlights of the past year.

1. Golf become a sport at the National Sports Games for the first time, with a competition held at the Ocean Dunes golf club in Phan Thiet. The event, held from August 11 to 14, attracted golfers from 11 provinces and cities. HCM City won the men's event while Ba Ria-Vung Tau won the women's event.

2. The Mercedes-Benz Masters Viet Nam, one of the most important professional golf competitions in Southeast Asia, was organised last October at the Song Be course in the southern province of Binh Duong with 33 top players in the region taking part. Malaysian Nicolas Fung won the title, the first of his career, as the US$60,000 tournament used the match-play format for the first time.

3. Five young Vietnamese golfers qualified for the Faldo Series Asia Grand Final in China. Do Le Gia Dat and Nguyen Tri Dung went through after finishing first and second in the men's U21 event at the Youth National Golf Championships. Ngo Bao Nghi and Luu Thi Viet Nga finished first and second in the women's U21 event. Truong Chi Quan won the final spot with a win in the boys' U16 event.

4. The Viet Nam Amateur Open and Viet Nam Ladies Championships were held in Da Lat in June. The former attracted many top golfers in the Southeast Asia, including the gold, silver, and bronze medallists at the Southeast Asian Games. Thai golfer Wasin won the title while Viet Nam's Trinh Van Tho finished eighth. Ngo Bao Nghi won the Viet Nam Ladies Championships.

5. The Viet Nam Senior Championships was organised for the third straight year at the King's Island golf course in the north in March, with Duong Thanh winning the title.

6. The second Match Play Golf Championships featuring foreign professionals and amateurs working and living in Viet Nam was organised at the Montgomerie Links golf course in the central province of Quang Nam. Nguyen Thai Duong won the overall crown while Australian Scott Riddick won the division for foreign players. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Dung won the women's event and veteran Phan Thanh Chien finished first in the seniors' event. — VNS

Vu Thi Huong makes history in ASIAD with bronze medal

HCMC – Vietnam’s sprinter Vu Thi Huong won the bronze medal in the women’s 100m category of the track and field event at the 16th Asian Games (ASIAD) in Guangzhou, China on Monday.

It was the country’s first medal in track and field competition since Vietnam began participating in Asia’s biggest sporting event in Seoul in 1986.

Asian champion Fukushima Chisato from Japan secured the gold with 11’’33 while Khubbieva Guzel from Uzbekistan took the silver as she finished with 11’’34.

Vu Thi Huong, who earned a gold medal in the women’s 60m category at Asian Indoor Games in Vietnam this year, and her teammate Le Ngoc Phuong reached the final round. However, Huong claimed the bronze as she was clocked in 11’’43. Phuong just crossed line at the bottom with 11’’76.

Earlier, Vu Thi Huong came first in group 1 of the semifinal round with 11’’46 at the 100 meter event while Le Ngoc Phuong just finished fifth in group 2 in the same category.

In boxing event, Vietnamese fighters exited from the competition when Nguyen Thi Tuyet Mai was 3-9 knocked out by Shinmoto Aya from Japan in the quarterfinals of the women’s under 51kg category and Ngo Thi Chung was 1-10 beaten by Yun Kum Ju from North Korea in the quarterfinals of the women’s under 60kg category.

Vietnamese women’s sepaktakraw team had an 21-19, 23-21 victory over Myanmar in the women’s regu event on Monday. The Vietnamese side will meet hosts China on Tuesday before facing archrivals Thailand in the round-robin competition.

The Vietnamese team comprising Dao Trong Kien, Hoang Ngoc Nhat and Vu Van Dung suffered a 199-226 loss to Japanese team in the men’s archery event while Le Thi Bich, Nguyen Thi Nguyet and Nguyen Thi Tuoi lost 22-45 to Japanese fencers in the women’s team foil category of the fencing event.

In men’s individual road race, rider Bui Minh Thuy failed to clinch the medal when he completed the 180-kilometer stage in four hours, 14 minutes and 55.15 seconds, ranking at fifth place while his compatriot Mai Nguyen Hung did not complete his competition.

Wong Kam Po from Hong Kong bagged the gold with 4:14:54.18, Miyazawa Takashi from Japan gained the silver with 4:14:54.33 and Chinese rider Zou Rongxi took the bronze with 4:14:54.96.

Vietnam took one more bronze medal in the tenth competition day, dropping to 25th in the ranking table with 11 silvers and 12 bronzes.

China still leads with 154 golds, 77 silvers and 73 bronzes, followed by South Korea with 61 golds, 51 silvers and 66 bronzes and Japan with 32 golds, 59 silvers and 67 bronzes.

Strong foreign squads compete at Int’l U.21 contest

Four foreign teams will compete with hosts Vietnam at the fourth International Under-21 Football Tournament which kicks off at Ho Chi Minh City’s Thong Nhat Stadium on Saturday, October 23.

The organizers of the Thanh Nien-sponsored nine-day event said that the Singaporeans are the most prominent contenders at the contest.

Nine members of the squad advanced to the semifinals in last year’s competition in Binh Duong.

Five of them competed at the second event in Hue in 2008 and four of them played at the 25th Southeast Asian Games (SEA) in Vientiane last year.

Thailand’s team includes 90 percent of the U19 squad that advanced to the final match of the 2010 SEA U19 event in Ho Chi Minh City in August.

The Thais intend to groom these players to compete at the 26th biennial Southeast Asian Games in Jakarta next year in the U23 category.

After their U23 team’s defeat at Thang Long Cup in HCMC early this month, Malaysia said they do not want to lose face again. Their U21 team coach Ibrahim Ismail said his squad includes seven players who competed last year and three that played at the second contest in Hue in 2008.

After a year off, Myanmar returns to this event with big hopes.

“The Thanh Nien-sponsored International U21 Football Tournament is a great place for us to discover new talent for Myanmar’s team to participate at the ASEAN Football Federation Cup (later this year),” wrote coach Than Htike in a letter sent to the Vietnam Football Federation. “We are in the same group with hosts Vietnam and will play the opener, so we will do our best.”

The Asian Football Confederation said it will send five international referees to the event. They are Lee Dong Jun from South Korea, Krishnan S/O Ramachandran from Malaysia, Xaypasenth Phongsanith from Laos and Thong Chanketya and Doung Sochet from Cambodia.

The three Vietnamese referees at the tournament will be Vo Minh Tri, Chau Duc Thanh and Tran Thanh Liem.
