Locally based surfing instructor Csiga Somoggrati from Hungary won first prize in the men’s category in the 12th NOA Fun Cup international windsurfing competition in Mui Ne on the weekend.

Guillot Christophe and Vila Remi from France took the second and third place, respectively in the two-day competition that finished Friday at the popular beach in the central province of Binh Thuan.

Somoggrati said his win was a combination of skill and luck adding that good winds on the second day were a big factor.

Meanwhile, in the women’s division, Manianne Kaplas from Finland came first followed by Lucy Adillo Maher from Australia and Deborah Khoo from Singapore.

The competition attracted 31 windsurfers, including six female, from 11 countries including Finland, Russia, Hungary, Switzerland, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Germany and Vietnam.

The course was 3,200 metres for men and 2,400 meters for women.

The Fun Cup is an annual slalom windsurfing race for amateurs that has been organized by Jibe’s Beach Club since 2001. On Friday February 25, Mui Ne will host the first event of the PWA Grand Slam, in two disciplines, slalom and freestyle.
