Three preliminary jobs before Liem excels at world chess

After brilliantly defending his title at the Aeroflot Open 2011 in Russia last week, grandmaster Le Quang Liem has become a prominent figure in a long-term plan of Vietnam to propel him to the world’s top spot in the future.

Ranking 79th in the world with an Elo rating of 2,664 in the January’s table, the 20-year-old player is estimated to have lifted himself up to an Elo of 2,689 after clinching the title and may surge to the top 40 at this month’s table, to be released soon.

Vietnam Chess Federation Deputy-General Secretary Nguyen Phuoc Trung sent Tuoi Tre a letter explaining the three preliminary jobs that must be accomplished before Liem can dream the impossible dream of becoming the World Chess champion.

First of all, Liem must make an unequivocal decision either to enter the professional sporting career with chess or to go on with his study, as he is a freshman of finance and banking at Saigon University at the moment.

Given the fact that all top-rated sportsmen in the world are professionals, it seems unlikely that Liem can take on both chess and study and excel in either of them, Trung said.

Becoming a professional, Liem will have time to map out a strategic route for training and competition. He can decide which tournament to enter to accumulate knowledge, which one to take to test his new chess strategies and which one to win to hike up his Elo points.

“I believe Liem will have a bright future at the Chess World Cup in 2013 if he chooses to enter the professional sports,” Trung writes in the letter.

Secondly, Liem’s bright future in world chess, however, depends on how the government of Vietnam plans and implements the “national strategy of investment” for Liem.

Vietnam has long struggled to better its status in world sports. Its goal, nevertheless, is simply to get out of the “under-developed zone”, never to reach the top spot and dominate the international world of sports.

It is clear that in the world of professional sports, individual effort alone is never enough to take an athlete to the top position. In Liem’s case, it requires a lot of national support and a careful “national investment plan.”

That is, Trung said, sports leaders of Vietnam should assist with a suitable strategy to help Liem develop his chess talent and scale the height of his sporting career.

Last but not the least is the question of money.

Liem needs all the help of qualified trainers and assisting staff he can get in his daily training and competition.

“He needs money to develop into a world-class player, as we can’t ask him to win all the tournaments he takes part in and use the prize money to cover for all the costs he incurred,” Trung concluded.

Former Brazil striker Ronaldo retires from game

Former Brazil striker Ronaldo announced his retirement on Monday, ending one of the most successful careers in soccer.

The 34-year-old three-times FIFA World Player of the Year, a twice World Cup winner and the record goalscorer in World Cup tournaments, said injuries and fitness problems prevented him from playing to his best form.

"I came here to say today that I'm ending my career as a professional player," Ronaldo, with his two sons at his side, told a packed news conference at Corinthians' training complex in Sao Paulo.

Ronaldo, who had a contract with Corinthians until the end of the year, said his fitness problems were the overriding reason for his decision.

He said he discovered while playing for AC Milan in Italy that he was suffering from a thyroid problem.

"Four years ago at Milan I discovered I was suffering from a complaint called hypothyroidism, which slows down your metabolism and to control it I would have to take some hormones that are not permitted in football because of anti-doping," Ronaldo said.

"I wanted to clarify this on the last day of my career," added Ronaldo, who has struggled to keep his weight down and often suffered the jibe of "fatty" during his career.

Ronaldo broke down in tears when he apologised to the Corinthians fans for failing to deliver the major prize of the Libertadores Cup and said he would still go to their matches as a supporter.

Corinthians were dumped out of South America's elite club competition, which they have never won, in the preliminary round two weeks ago. They went out in the round of 16 in 2010, their centenary year.

Ronaldo career highlights

- Born, September 22, 1976 on outskirts of Rio de Janeiro.

- Together with Zinedine Zidane, he is the only player to have won the FIFA World Player of the Year award on three occasions (1996, 1997 and 2002). He also won the European Footballer of the Year award twice (1997 and 2002).

- Won two World Cups (1994 and 2002) with Brazil and holds the record for goals scored in World Cup tournaments with 15. Also won the Copa America twice with Brazil (1997, 1999).

- Won his first cap for Brazil as a 17-year-old and went on to score 62 goals in 97 international appearances.

- Suffered a mysterious illness hours before the 1998 World Cup final in France but after first being named as a substitute, he was included in the starting lineup. He played badly and Brazil lost 3-0 to France.

- Had problems with his knees throughout his career, undergoing surgery while at Inter Milan and AC Milan. Spent almost two years out of the game while recovering from surgery after his knee buckled in the Italian Cup final against Lazio in April 2000.

- His best season came at Barcelona in 1996-97 when he scored 47 goals in 49 games. Totalled more than 400 goals in his career with seven clubs having made his debut at Cruzeiro.

- His moves to Barcelona ($19.5 million) and Inter Milan ($27.9) were both then world record fees. Real Madrid paid 43 million euros ($58.26 million) for him in August 2002.

- Won only one league title in his first season at Real Madrid. Never won the European Cup but won the Cup Winners' Cup with Barcelona, the UEFA Cup while at Inter and the old Intercontinental Cup with Real Madrid.

- Married Brazilian female footballer and model Milene Domingues in December 1999. The couple had a child, Ronald, and were divorced four years later. In 2005, got engaged to Brazilian model Daniella Cicarelli, marking the occasion with a lavish St Valentine's celebration at a French chateau. The couple split up three months later.

- Following another knee operation while at AC Milan, he returned to Brazil and joined Corinthians in 2009 but an arrival heralded as key in the team's bid to win South America's Libertadores Cup for the first time ended in disappointment with only the lesser Copa Brasil and Paulista (Sao Paulo) state titles.

Messi wins World Player of Year award again

Argentina's Lionel Messi was named World Player of the Year for the second time in a row on Monday, surprisingly beating his Barcelona team mates Andres Iniesta and Xavi.

Iniesta and Xavi had been favorites after helping Spain win the World Cup last year while Messi had failed to score a goal or produce his best form at the tournament in South Africa.

"It was just good to be here with my team mates," said Messi, who looked as surprised as anyone by the result which was announced by Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola.

"I'd like to share this with my team mates, without whom I would not be here, and...with all the Argentines."

It was the first time the award had been made since the decision to unite FIFA's World Player of the Year with France Football magazine's older Ballon D'Or.

Messi won both awards last season.

The only Spanish winner of either prize was Luis Suarez who took the Ballon D'Or in 1960.

Votes were cast by the coaches and captains of national teams and by selected journalists.

Messi produced some scintillating performances for Barcelona last year, but failed to inspire Argentina who were knocked out in the World Cup quarterfinals.

Son shocks former world chess champion

International Grand Master (IGM) Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son sent shockwaves
through the chess world at the Cap D'Agde Rapid Chess Tournament in
France after beating former world champion Russian Anatoly Karpov in
his fifth match on Oct. 26.

The win took Son to third place in Group A, which should help him secure a quarter-final berth.

In an earlier game, Son drew with Bu Xiangzhi, one of his main rivals at the Asian Games in China next month.

"It's the first ever time a Vietnamese player has beaten the 12-time
world champion," said an official from Vietnam Chess Federation, Truong

"However, the winning move was just a moment of
inspiration for Son, 20, in his battle against the 59-year-old former
world champion," he said.

He added that any player could lose a game during speed play with just one move.

Six years ago, Son became the second youngest IGM in world chess history at the age of 14 years and nine months.

The 20-year-old started to draw attention in 2000 when he won the World U-10s Chess Championship in Spain .

Germany's '54 World Cup win could be drug-tainted - study

West Germany's 1954 World Cup-winning team, feted as the men who helped put a nation back on its feet after World War Two, may have been boosted by a secret doping program, according to a new university study.

Germany upstaged red-hot favorites Hungary 3-2 in the final in Switzerland in a victory that became known as the "Miracle of Berne", giving the war-weary nation cause at last for cheer.

"There are several strong indications that point to the injection of (methamphetamine) pervitin in some Germany players and not vitamin C as it was claimed," sports historian and author Erik Eggers, who conducted the study as part of a team at Humboldt University in Berlin, told Reuters on Wednesday.

Pervitin was a known stimulant at the time and had also been distributed to German soldiers in World War Two.

Team officials had said they had injected their players only with vitamin C during the tournament. No drugs tests were conducted at the time.

Eggers has been studying this case for some years and his report forms part of a wider project called 'Doping in Germany', launched by the country's sports authorities to investigate its doping past.

"Pervitin was at that time widely used in many sports and amphetamines were said to be also used by South America players," Eggers said.

"What is suspicious is that these injections to German players were distributed secretly and the only reason they became known was because those who got injected contracted jaundice."

Hungary had demolished the Germans 8-3 in the tournament's group stage, making West Germany's final win all the more surprising.

"The most important indication, though, is that vitamin C is not injected. This is very unusual. They could have just eaten an orange instead."

German football federation (DFB) officials could not be immediately reached for a comment.

German Olympic Sports Union (DOSB), the country's umbrella sports organization which launched the Doping in Germany project with other sports authorities, told Reuters they were aware of Eggers' study.

"Keep in mind these are indications and not proof," a DOSB official told Reuters.

Many Germans view the 1954 win as the springboard of the country's remarkable soccer success in the World Cups -- they have won three and been runners-up four times -- and a key moment of renewed optimism in post-War Germany.

Paul the 'psychic' World Cup octopus dies: aquarium

Paul the octopus, who shot to fame during this year's football World Cup in South Africa for correctly predicting the outcome of games, has died, his aquarium in Germany said Tuesday.

"Management and staff at the Oberhausen Sea Life Center were devastated to discover that oracle octopus Paul, who achieved global renown during the recent World Cup, had passed away overnight," the aquarium said in a somber statement.

“His success made him almost a bigger story than the World Cup itself,” www.rte.ie quoted Stefan Porwoll, manager of the center in Germany, as saying.

Paul predicted the winners of all Germany's World Cup clashes, and then of the final by selecting one of two boxes, each loaded with a mussel food treat and marked on the outside with one of the teams.

Staff at the center said his death was not entirely unexpected, since common octopuses generally only live a couple of years.

“We may decide to give Paul his own small burial plot within our grounds and erect a modest permanent shrine,” according to the website.

Uncertainty hangs over World Cup hosting

The contest to host the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, due to be decided by soccer's governing body FIFA has been discredited and thrown into uncertainty by allegations of vote-selling.

Two members of FIFA's executive committee -- Amos Adamu of Nigeria and Reynald Temarii of Tahiti -- were provisionally suspended on Wednesday for 30 days by the ethics committee.

It is alleged they offered to sell their votes when approached by Sunday Times reporters posing as lobbyists for an American consortium.

FIFA general secretary Jerome Valcke said on Wednesday he expected the vote to go ahead on December 2, but the soccer's governing body will have to act quickly and decisively to ensure it does.

England and Russia are bidding to host the 2018 World Cup along with joint bids from Spain/Portugal and Belgium/Netherlands while Japan, South Korea, Qatar, United States and Australia are candidates for 2022.

Voting dilemma

Voting rights are restricted to the 24 members of the FIFA executive committee. This compares to more than 100 voting members when the International Olympic Committee chooses venues for the Summer and Winter Olympic games.

If Adamu and Temarii are expelled, it is unclear whether they would immediately be replaced -- FIFA statutes dictate that regional confederations choose the executive committee members -- or whether the vote would be reduced to 22.

Bidding nations may protest if the size of the already-small electoral college is reduced still further.

FIFA officials on Wednesday did not want to discuss either scenario, saying it was premature.

"I'm not a prophet," head of the ethics committee Claudio Sulser said. "It's hard for me to answer, it depends on the evidence that is brought forward."

Ethics committee

FIFA's ethics committee is relatively new, having been created in 2006. Its first chairman was former British athlete Sebastian Coe while Sulser is a lawyer and former Swiss soccer international.

One of its main briefs is to keep watch over the bid process for 2018 and 2022.

The committee said it would produce a final verdict on Temarii and Adamu by mid-November.

"I think we can take a decision before December2... probably between November 15 and 17," Sulser said.

Possible collusion

Two unnamed candidate nations will also be investigated for breaching rules on collusion.

FIFA has rules banning bidding nations from making agreements with each other, but collusion was something critics said could become a possibility when it was decided to choose two World Cup hosts at the same time.

The ultimate penalty could be disqualification of the offending bids, but FIFA on Wednesday were reluctant to discuss this possibility, saying there were numerous stages to pass before such a drastic measure might be taken.

Vietnam sent a total of 32 players to the event but all of them -- excluding Tien Minh -- were eliminated in the qualifiers.

The Vietnam Grand Prix Open 2010 taking place from October 5-10 in HCMC attracted 274 players from 20 nations and territories in the world, with some high-ranking players such as Chinese Ma Jin, number 3 in the world; US Karyn Cecillia, No 32 in the world and Australian Prutsch Simone, the world’s number 75.

Qatar unveils 'island' World Cup stadium

Qatar unveiled its ultra-modern Lusail Stadium on Wednesday which would host the opening match and World Cup final in 2022 if its bid to stage the tournament wins FIFA's approval in December.

The air-conditioned stadium, which would have a capacity of 86,000, would take four years to build, would expected to be completed by 2019 and would also be surrounded by water. If Qatar loses its bid, the ground will not be built.

Bid CEO chairman Hassan Al-Thawadi told Reuters at the Leaders in Football conference that with eight weeks to go before FIFA make their decision, he was optimistic that Qatar could stage the first World Cup in the Middle East.

Qatar's candidature received some criticism from FIFA's inspection team last month when Harold Mayne-Nicholls, the head of the FIFA delegation, said that the country's small size, rather than the summer temperatures that can soar to above 50 degrees Celsius, could cause logistical problems.

Qatar would become the smallest host nation to stage the finals since Uruguay hosted the first World Cup in 1930 if it won FIFA's approval.

However, Al Thawadi, speaking to Reuters in a private room at Chelsea's Stamford Bridge ground, said his team had responded to the inspection team's observations.

"If you look at their comments, they did not refer to the weather and for us that was a great, great success. A lot of people thought that our Achilles heel was the weather, but we have proved with our air-conditioned technology, we can overcome that.

"Regarding some of their comments regarding logistics and so on -- we are proposing a unique and innovative concept -- a compact World Cup (because of the size of the country).”

"Whenever you are pioneering a new concept it requires time for people to understand it,” he added. “There will be skeptics, and they are right to be skeptical, but we think although those concerns might be valid, we are able to overcome them."

The Lusail Stadium completes the line-up of the 12 stadiums Qatar would use in 2022 and would incorporate the air-conditioning technology the country has pioneered to make their stadiums more comfortable.

Qatar is one of four bids for the 2022 finals along with Australia, South Korea and Japan. They are spending US$4 billion dollars building nine new stadiums and renovating three others.

Due to the format of the FIFA bidding process, the five bids trying to host the 2018 finals are also going for 2022 -- in theory at least -- with England, Russia, the United States and joint bids from Spain/Portugal and Belgium/Netherlands in contention.

All bidding nations presented their candidatures before delegates at the conference, apart from Australia.

The bidding war for the World Cup is beginning to intensify with FIFA president Sepp Blatter planning to visit British Prime Minister David Cameron in London next week.

FIFA will announce which countries will stage each event in Zurich on December 2.

Director recognises Ha Long Bay’s potential

The Director of New7Wonders Foundation, Jean-Paul De La Fuente, has
called on Vietnam to launch a national campaign to promote Ha Long Bay’s
image and attempt to gain the title of a New7Wonders attraction.

Jean-Paul made the statement in an interview with The Thao & Van
Hoa (Sports & Culture) newspaper after concluding a working session
with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism on October 4.

He said the publicity campaign was necessary in the final rounds of
the competition to increase public awareness of the election, which
should involve the Government.

Brazil’s President took
part in voting for its key natural attraction as it was part of the
national pride and honour, said the chief of the world body evaluating
new world wonders.

He said he understood that at this
point, all Vietnamese considered Ha Long bay as the biggest wonder of
the nation, which he said needs massive promotion and election campaigns
to promote its image.

Jean-Paul advised Vietnam to
avoid routines in campaigning while creating special initiatives to
attract public attention, especially the young generation, to vote.

He said pictures of the site were not convincing enough as his body
had received numerous beautiful pictures from 28 candidates around the
world.

These pictures should be accompanied with strong messages, he emphasised.

Colourful figures should be invited to pose in the scene and take part
in voting and messages on Ha Long Bay should be conveyed to
international tourists, Paul advised.

The voting in the final round will be expanded to telephone calls and messaging, in addition to the internet.

He said he expected the Vietnamese people would bring their national
spirit, which he saw with his own eyes in the Thang Long-Hanoi
millennium anniversary, to the Ha Long Bay campaign.

The competition will not be decided by a group of people but by a majority in the world, Jean-Paul emphasised./.
