26th SEA Games not to have female football

Female football will not be played at the 26th South East Asian Games
in Indonesia following a decision by the Indonesia organising
committee, a major blow to the Vietnam team which is the defending
champion.

Vietnam Olympic Committee general secretary Hoang Vinh Giang said it would be difficult to change the committee's decision.

Indonesia is not good at female football so the Games committee is not eager for this event, he said.

"The
Games committee's reason is that they don't have enough football
grounds," Giang said. "To organise the female football event, they need
two Asian Football Confederation standard grounds, not including
training grounds.

"The Vietnam committee will give its opinion on
this problem at the meeting with Indonesia to discuss competition
programmes. We will request they hold female football. But in my
experience, there is little chance to modify the Games committee's
determination. They have the right to add or reject events."

Meanwhile,
the national female football team, the Games defending champions,
convened at the National Sports Training Centre in Hanoi on Feb. 14 in
preparation for tournaments this year, coached by Chinese Chen Yun Fat.
They include the upcoming SEA Games and the Olympic London 2012
qualifying rounds.

Vietnam Football Federation vice chairman
Nguyen Lan Trung said the federation was waiting for the official
announcement from the Games committee before adjusting the team's
training schedule.

"Meanwhile, the federation would ask the
Vietnam Olympic Committee and football federations in the region to
petition the Games committee to include female football in the programme
for the 26th SEA Games," ./.

Pacquiao balances pugilism and politics

While Manny Pacquiao balances his roles as world's greatest fighter and representative of the Sarangani province in the Philippine Congress, trainer Freddie Roach was mapping out a strategy to beat "Sugar" Shane Mosley.

Congressman Pacquiao, a world champion at eight different weight classes, will utilize a legislative recess to defend his World Boxing Organization welterweight title against former three-division champion Mosley on May 7 in Las Vegas.

"The first four rounds may be a little crucial, a little dangerous," Roach told reporters at a promotional news conference on Monday. "He's a good counter-puncher and can punch a little bit but I think we can break him down.

"If you walk in too aggressively he will catch you."

Pacquiao, meanwhile, was keeping an eye on the clock to catch a train to Washington where he was scheduled to meet with US Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Nevada Democrat.

"We will discuss some political matters," said Pacquiao, declining to offer details on the agenda.

Pacquiao said he still enjoyed boxing but also wanted to thrive in his new role.

"You need to love your job and what you're going to do, and it's just time management," he said about balancing his dual roles. "I love both jobs."

Pacquiao said he has been a busy politician.

"I'm the one who pushed the bill for anti-human trafficking," he said. "I'm doing good in Congress. There's a lot of stuff to do."

He also worked to obtain funds to build a hospital and hopes construction will begin this spring to finally bring medical services to his province.

"I want to be a champion as a public servant," he said.

Fight organizers said all but a few hundred seats at the MGM Grand arena were already sold, adding that the bookmakers' early line listed Pacquiao as a 7-to-1 favorite.

This information seemed to excite the Mosley camp.

"How do we get a bet in that 7-to-1 situation? Seven to one? We gotta find a way to slide some paper in there," said Mosley trainer Nazim Richardson.

Richardson praised Pacquiao but relished the challenge.

"I think Manny Pacquiao is an extraordinary athlete," he said. "I'm proud that we have the privilege to solve the puzzle that is Manny Pacquiao."

The 32-year-old Pacquiao is 52-3-2, with a pair of decisive wins last year over Joshua Clottey and Antonio Margarito.

Mosley, 39, lost a decision to Floyd Mayweather and fought a draw with Sergio Mora last year to put his record at 46-6-1.

Mosley, who will have a 7.5-inch reach advantage, was upbeat about facing an opponent who liked to trade punches after lackluster showings against defensive specialists.

"These are the type of fights I love to be in, with guys that really like to fight," said Mosley, a former super welterweight champion.

Former Brazil striker Ronaldo retires from game

Former Brazil striker Ronaldo announced his retirement on Monday, ending one of the most successful careers in soccer.

The 34-year-old three-times FIFA World Player of the Year, a twice World Cup winner and the record goalscorer in World Cup tournaments, said injuries and fitness problems prevented him from playing to his best form.

"I came here to say today that I'm ending my career as a professional player," Ronaldo, with his two sons at his side, told a packed news conference at Corinthians' training complex in Sao Paulo.

Ronaldo, who had a contract with Corinthians until the end of the year, said his fitness problems were the overriding reason for his decision.

He said he discovered while playing for AC Milan in Italy that he was suffering from a thyroid problem.

"Four years ago at Milan I discovered I was suffering from a complaint called hypothyroidism, which slows down your metabolism and to control it I would have to take some hormones that are not permitted in football because of anti-doping," Ronaldo said.

"I wanted to clarify this on the last day of my career," added Ronaldo, who has struggled to keep his weight down and often suffered the jibe of "fatty" during his career.

Tay Son dynasty antiques on display

More than 400 rare antique items dating back to the Tay Son dynasty
(1778-1802) are on display at an exhibition in HCM City .

The exhibition at the Vietnam History Museum features
terracotta items like tiles, bricks, vases, plates and cups as well as
several official documents including letters and royal decrees signed by
Emperor Quang Trung.

The display also has ancient coins
and weapons including swords, bayonets and a huge cannon found at Thi
Nai Lagoon, considered very rare by collectors. Some spoons and bows
found on the riverbed in the Rach Gam-Xoai Mut area in the Mekong Delta
are also on show.

Organisers said many of the objects are being exhibited for the first time.

Nine museums and historical sites nationwide have lent their antique
collections for this exhibition as have six collectors in HCM City
and Dong Nai province.

Although the dynasty's reign was
short-lived at 32 years, the Tay Son peasant rebellion that crowned it
is a landmark event in Vietnamese history.

Even though the
succeeding Nguyen dynasty forbade the use of materials and the
intellectual heritage of the Tay Son dynasty, destroying many of its
vestiges, the material remains of that period have not disappeared
completely.

The exhibition, titled The Eternal Halo,
celebrates the 240th anniversary of the Tay Son Uprising (1771- 2011)
and 222nd anniversary of Quang Trung's victory over the Chinese Qing
invaders in 1789.

The exhibition at Nguyen Binh Khiem Street in District 1 will remain open until October./.

26th SEA Games not to have female football

HA NOI – The Indonesia SEA Games Organizing Committee (INASOC) has announced to Olympic committees of Southeast Asian nations that female football will not be played at the 26th SEA Games in Indonesia. INASOC said this issue will be proclaimed officially on February 25-28 in Indonesia.

Exchanging views on this concern, general secretary of Viet Nam Olympic Committee (VOC), Hoang Vinh Giang said that "It's difficult to change INASOC's decision on female football in the 26th SEA Games."

"Few days ago, I received INASOC's announcement on the above matter. INASOC's reason is that they meet difficulties in football grounds. To organise female football event, they need to have two Asian Football Confederation's standard grounds, not including training ones," Giang said.

According to Giang, Indonesian is not good at female football. So INASOC is not eager for this event.

"In principle, the VOC will give its opinions on this problem in the meeting to discuss competing programmes with the hosts and request Indonesia to continue to hold female football. But at my experience, there is little chance to modify INASOC's determination. They have rights to add or reject events in the official competing programme," Giang said.

Meanwhile, the national female football team, SEA Games defending champion, coached by Chinese Chen Yun Fat convened at Ha Noi-based National Sports Training Centre yesterday in preparation for tournaments this year such as Olympic London 2012's qualifying rounds and upcoming SEA Games.

Ten-man Real beat Espanyol to trim Barca's lead

Real Madrid recovered from the second-minute dismissal of goalkeeper Iker Casillas to secure a battling 1-0 win at Espanyol on Sunday and cut Barcelona's lead at the top of La Liga to five points.

Barca's record 16-match winning run ended on Saturday when they had to fight back from a goal down to rescue a 1-1 draw at Sporting Gijon and Real took full advantage with a gritty display at a raucous Cornella-El Prat stadium.

Casillas, Spain's World Cup-winning captain, was shown a straight red after bringing down Jose Callejon just outside the area and Real coach Jose Mourinho immediately brought on reserve keeper Antonio Adan to replace Argentina winger Angel Di Maria.

The dismissal lifted the home fans but they were silenced on 24 minutes when Real defender Marcelo cut in from the left wing and squeezed a shot past Carlos Kameni from a tight angle.

January loan signing Emmanuel Adebayor almost snatched a second in the 40th minute but the Togo international's scooped shot bounced on top of the crossbar and out for a goal kick.

Adebayor had chances to make the game safe late in the second half but Kameni pulled off two superb saves, while at the other end Joan Verdu nearly surprised Adan with a deft chip.

Mourinho said Real had done well to beat such strong opponents with a man fewer.

"I am not going to change my tune just because we are two points closer," the Portuguese told a news conference.

"I would like to have a five-point lead over the team in second place."

In the earlier kickoff, Villarreal surrendered their grip on third place when they lost 1-0 at Deportivo Coruna.

Defender Alberto Lopo grabbed the only goal in the 60th minute at the Riazor when he popped up unmarked to steer home an Antonio Tomas free kick.

Villarreal's second defeat in a row following last weekend's 1-0 reverse at home to Levante left them in fourth, two points behind Valencia who won 2-1 at Atletico Madrid on Saturday.

Barca have 62 points from 23 matches, with Real on 57. Valencia are 10 points adrift on 47 and Villarreal have 45.

Fifth-placed Athletic Bilbao, who travel to Real Mallorca on Monday, are seven points behind Villarrreal, while Espanyol are sixth, a point behind the Basque club.

In Sunday's other matches, former France striker David Trezeguet struck the winner as promoted Hercules came from a goal down to beat visiting Real Zaragoza 2-1.

Malaga scored two late goals to snatch a 2-2 draw against visiting Getafe, although the Andalusian club, one of the biggest spenders in the January transfer window, remained bottom of the standings.

Promoted Real Sociedad moved up to ninth above Atletico thanks to a 1-0 home win over Osasuna, who had Damia Abella sent off late on for a second yellow card.

Levante, who also came up from the second division at the end of last season, beat Almeria 1-0 to climb to 15th.
