Tay Son dynasty antiques on display

Tay Son dynasty antiques on display

More than 400 rare antique items dating back to the Tay Son dynasty
(1778-1802) are on display at an exhibition in HCM City .

The exhibition at the Vietnam History Museum features
terracotta items like tiles, bricks, vases, plates and cups as well as
several official documents including letters and royal decrees signed by
Emperor Quang Trung.

The display also has ancient coins
and weapons including swords, bayonets and a huge cannon found at Thi
Nai Lagoon, considered very rare by collectors. Some spoons and bows
found on the riverbed in the Rach Gam-Xoai Mut area in the Mekong Delta
are also on show.

Organisers said many of the objects are being exhibited for the first time.

Nine museums and historical sites nationwide have lent their antique
collections for this exhibition as have six collectors in HCM City
and Dong Nai province.

Although the dynasty's reign was
short-lived at 32 years, the Tay Son peasant rebellion that crowned it
is a landmark event in Vietnamese history.

Even though the
succeeding Nguyen dynasty forbade the use of materials and the
intellectual heritage of the Tay Son dynasty, destroying many of its
vestiges, the material remains of that period have not disappeared
completely.

The exhibition, titled The Eternal Halo,
celebrates the 240th anniversary of the Tay Son Uprising (1771- 2011)
and 222nd anniversary of Quang Trung's victory over the Chinese Qing
invaders in 1789.

The exhibition at Nguyen Binh Khiem Street in District 1 will remain open until October./.

Photos of AO-affected Vietnamese children on Paris show

A photo exhibition of Vietnamese disabled teenagers who are victims of
Agent Orange was opened in gallery of the Maison du Vietnam (House of
Vietnam) in Paris on Dec. 6.

The exhibition, the first of its kind, with its title “Our Life and
Dreams”, is organised by the ‘Flowers of Hope’ Orange Association with
assistance from France’s Kodak film company. The event is under an
initiative of Australian photographer Katherine Muray, who taught these
unfortunate authors in the northern province of Ninh Binh and the
central coastal city of Nha Trang, Vietnam.

The exhibition
introduces entries selected from numerous photos taken by young people
of between 16-20 years old using digital automatic cameras provided by
Kodak film company. These are results of Muray’s week-long training
courses.

The authors are all disabled with mental deficiency or
hare lips and cleft palates caused by Agent Orange/dioxin. They are
unable to speak and learn but their works reflect the disabled’
sentiments of the surrounding world.

Muray said she would open more courses for disadvantaged children in other localities of Vietnam.

A larger exhibition of such works is planed to be held soon at the Vietnam Culture Centre in Paris./.

Exhibition spotlights nation's fine arts

The best examples of Vietnamese fine arts produced during the past
five-year period are on show at an exhibition of 836 artworks in Hanoi.

The National Fine Arts Exhibition is held every five
years to review and assess the state of Vietnamese fine arts. The works
awarded and displayed at the exhibition are selected from 5,000 entries
nationwide.

They show the creativity, skill and increasing professionalism of Vietnamese artists.

The works on show include paintings, graphics, installations and
sculptures that reflect different perspectives on contemporary life and
society.

Tran Khanh Chuong, president of Vietnam Fine Arts
Association, who is also deputy head of the organising board, says "The
exhibition presents many works by artists during the renewal process
who are creating a positive movement in Vietnam fine arts and
sculpture. This is the most important event of Vietnam fine arts
this year."

Forty-eight awards were granted including three gold medals, six silver medals, nine bronze and 30 consolation prizes.

The gold medals went to Vu Cuong for Mam Da (Stone's Buds), oil on
canvas; Nguyen Truong Linh for Hanoi Co Cau Long Bien (Hanoi Has Long
Bien Bridge) lacquer; Nguyen Quoc Thang for Nhung La Thu Thoi Chien (War
Letters), bronze sculpture.

Linh's painting was not the
only one at the exhibition featuring Long Bien Bridge , but he is
the winner thanks to different point of view and style of colours, says
painter Le Anh Van.

Long Bien Bridge is portrayed
as a grandiose construction with buttresses painted in dark and light
colours. In contrast, the painter describes the lives of small people
living around it.

The bronze sculpture of Thang tells a
long story of a cruel war. The visitors can see an image of a soldier on
guard, protecting the country. He lets fly with letters amid the
gunfire and smoke. The sad eyes of a woman waiting for the letters – his
wife or his mother – haunts people.

The oil painting Mam
Da reflects life in a mountainous region. Despite the hard life, people,
children and cattle are still energetic.

Rural power: The
oil on canvas Mam Da by Vu Cuong, which shows the power and vitality of
the people in mountainous regions, was granted the Gold Medal.

Vi Kien Thanh, head of the Fine Arts, Photography and Exhibition
Department, says "The quality of the work is quite even, so it was
challenging for the jury and organising board to select the
representative works for the exhibition.

"The artists show
a wide variety and diversity of themes, styles and media. Through the
artworks, they express their inner feelings.

"Many people
think that all cities and provinces in the country have artworks
displayed at the exhibition because this is the national event but
actually, we couldn't select any artworks from nine.

"In
the previous exhibition, the organising board tried to show
representative works of all cities and provinces, but since this year
only the most excellent ones are honoured."

The exhibition will run until Dec. 8 at the Vietnamese Culture and Arts Exhibition Centre, 2 Hoa Lu Street , Hanoi .

After being displayed in Hanoi , the exhibition will be taken to HCM
City Fine Arts Museum and displayed between January 10-26./.

Exhibition revels in diversity

The cultures and diversity of Southeast Asia are on display in a new
exhibition of lacquerware and Indonesian glass paintings entitled “A
Glimpse of Southeast Asia” that opens at the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology
in Hanoi.

The art of glass painting originated in
Europe but was introduced to Indonesia in the early 20th century by
the Dutch, flourished there during the 1930s. Artists paint on the
reverse side of the glass, with the first stroke on the glass seen in
the foreground of the image as paintings are viewed through the glass.

The new exhibition aimed to increase public understanding of the links
among Vietnamese ethnic groups and those of Southeast Asia as a whole,
which together form both a unity and a diversity of cultures, according
to museum director Vo Quang Trong.

In preparation for the exhibition, museum staff travelled throughout the region collecting objects and materials, added Vo.

"We were met with excitement and collaboration from cultural
institutions, museums, researchers, private collectors, and many people
who are keen to preserve their cultures," he said.

The
collections were particularly enriched by objects donated by Prof Kaneko
Kazushige from Japan , Prof Le Thanh Khoi from France , and Rosalia
Sciortino and O'ong Maryono from Italy . The resulting exhibition is
based on a Vietnamese-French project entitled Enhancement of Vietnamese
Museum's Heritage, organised by the French Embassy in Vietnam and
the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences.

Since 2005,
French experts have participated in designing and giving professional
advice on exhibit space. They have also worked with the museum staff on
selecting objects, photographs and films, making suggestions, editing
texts and captions, shaping the catalogue and designing graphic forms,
said Christine Hemmet, curator of France 's Branly Museum .

A Glimpse on Southeast Asia also celebrates the occasion of the
museum's 15th anniversary and will run through October 5 of next year.
With the opening of the Kite Building , currently under
construction, the exhibition will be expanded to include costumes and
other exhibits on the religion, performing arts and social lives of the
region's ethnic groups./.

Artists challenge values

Artists challenge values

A group exhibition named Tam Ta (Pouring), with works from five contemporary artists from Hanoi, has opened in HCM City.

The exhibition, with the assistance of pioneering artist and curator
Tran Luong, is hosted by San Art and supported by Bui Gallery in Hanoi.

In this exhibition, imagination is given space to
play with Nguyen Tran Nam's near life-size human figures resting on
balls, Vu Hong Ninh's over-sized baby, made from soap, and Nguyen Huy
An's shadows wreaking havoc with ink and charcoal.

Nguyen Van Phuc's star light stands propped up by a set of crutches,
while Nguyen Manh Hung's ghostly bodyless figures hang from the ceiling.

The curator says this is the mystery of Tam Ta, a kind of mental state that exudes the mood of an unceasing kind of rain.

He says that it does not represent a torrent of water, but a rain of
survival, of suspended psychological states or physical adventures, of a
constant questioning of reality.

These young artists challenge human values, recognising that knowledge is the key to the door of the world.

This is the first exhibition of art from Hanoi since 2006 to be seen
in HCM City by contemporary artists of the 1970s and 1980s generation.
The touring exhibition, which opened at Bui Gallery in Hanoi in July, is
an opportunity for local audiences to see the artistic ideas emerging
from the country's capital as it is also rare for artists in Vietnam to
have the chance to show their work across the country due to lack of
funding.

San Art is one of three venues for the
exhibition, which will be on view until November 13. Its next venue will
be New Space Arts in Hue.

The Tam Ta exhibition is on view at San Art, 3 Me Linh Street, Ward 19, Binh Thanh district, HCM City./.

Vietnam women feature at international art show

Ten Vietnamese women are among 84 artists from 24 countries
participating in an international female art exhibition centred on the
self.

Her Presence in Colours IX, presented by the
International Women Artists Council (INWAC), will remain open in
Portland State University 's Littman Gallery until the end of this
month.

Many international artists have interpreted the
exhibition's topic, "art as a reflection of self", very literally in
their works, organisers said.

Most of the art works
are either abstract or realistic oil paintings, with each displaying a
distinct cultural style that enables viewers to tell which country they
are from, they added.

INWAC was formed in China in
1993 when Yuen Chee Ling organised seven other Chinese female artists
for an exhibition and has since grown to a multinational organisation
with members from Europe, North America, Asia, the Middle East and
elsewhere.

Her Presence in Colours, held every two
years, has thus far been hosted by many Southeast Asian countries as
well as the UK and Australia .

This year's event
includes an artists' forum, a walk through the galleries of Pearl
District, sketching at the Lan Su Chinese Garden and small "sister
group" meetings to foster friendships.

The Vietnamese
artists featured in the latest exhibition are Cao Thi Duoc, Dang Thi
Duong, Nguyen Thuy Huong, Le Thi Kim, Cong Tang Ton Nu Ai Lan, Tran
Thuy Linh, Nguyen Thi Tam, Huynh Phuong Thi Dai Trang, Ly Chanh Van, and
Nguyen Thi Quang Vinh./.
