Mexico ban Vela, Juarez six months after party

Mexico have banned Carlos Vela and Efrain Juarez for six months for their part in a late-night party that followed a friendly against Colombia earlier this month, the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) said.

"(Vela and Juarez) will be suspended for six months... due to breaking four articles of the internal regulations of the national team," Nestor de la Torre, FMF national teams' director, told a news conference.

He said another 11 players, including Vela's fellow forwards Javier Hernandez and Giovani dos Santos and experienced defender Rafael Marquez, will be fined following the party that took place after the match with Colombia in Monterrey on September 7.

De la Torre said the players had, among other things, failed to observe good discipline and receive visitors only at specified hours and within designated areas.

The 50,000 pesos (US$3,900) to be paid by each of the fined players would be donated to a charity in Ciudad Juarez, a city plagued by drugs-related violence where Mexico will play their next friendly against Venezuela on October 12, or the Karl hurricane-hit Mexican Gulf port city of Veracruz.

“Mistakes committed”

The other fined players were goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, defenders Francisco Rodriguez, Carlos Salcido and Hector Moreno, midfielders Andres Guardado, Gerardo Torrado, and Pablo Barrera and forward Enrique Esqueda.

"We talked to most of them and there was total acceptance (of the punishments)," de la Torre said. "There were mistakes committed.”

“The first step to be able to move forward is to recognize when one has made mistakes."

The party at the players' hotel followed Mexico's first victory in three friendlies since the World Cup in South Africa where they reached the second round in June.

They beat Colombia 1-0 after a 1-1 draw with world champions Spain in Mexico City and a 2-1 defeat by Ecuador in Guadalajara.

De la Torre denied local media reports that a number of prostitutes had been invited to the party.

"Those are rumors, there were guests, relatives and friends,” De la Torre said. “We're talking about facts, not suppositions, and being realistic there were only relatives and friends.”

Liverpool humbled by Northampton while Chelsea go out

Liverpool suffered a humiliating home defeat on penalties by League Two Northampton Town in the English League Cup third round on Wednesday.

Northampton, 17th in the fourth tier of English soccer, forced a 2-2 draw after extra time before winning 4-2 in the shootout to continue Liverpool's poor start to the season under new coach Roy Hodgson.

The other big upset came at Stamford Bridge where Newcastle United became the first team to beat champions Chelsea this season, striker Shola Ameobi scoring with a glancing header in the final minute to secure a thrilling 4-3 win.

Big-spending Manchester City also went out, losing 2-1 at West Bromwich Albion after taking the lead, but holders Manchester United survived an early scare to crush Scunthorpe United 5-2.

Liverpool, fielding a largely second-string team, took a lead through Milan Jovanovic but Northampton, who spent one season in the top flight in the mid-1960s, took the match to extra time through a 56th-minute strike by Billy McKay.

Northampton silenced Anfield by taking the lead eight minutes into the extra period through Michael Jacobs before a goal by striker David N'gog four minutes from time leveled the scores at 2-2 and sent the game to penalties.

The fourth division team controlled the shootout and Abdul Osman converted his spot-kick to secure a memorable 4-2 victory.

"Quite frankly, when they took the lead in extra time it was going to be an uphill battle," Hodgson told Sky Sports.

"We all know penalty shootouts are a little bit of a lottery but on the other hand when you are at home and you are kicking them in front of the Kop, you do harbor hopes at least that it's going to be your team that comes out on top," he added.

First defeat

Chelsea, also playing a much-changed side, lost a competitive match for the first time since April when Newcastle came from behind to claim their first victory at Stamford Bridge since 1986.

Chelsea went ahead early through defender Patrick Van Aanholt, but Newcastle roared into a 3-1 lead soon after halftime with goals from Nile Ranger, Ryan Taylor and Ameobi.

The hosts, reduced to 10 men after using all their substitutes, struck back with two Nicolas Anelka goals before Ameobi headed the winner.

"Nobody thought that we could win (on)coming here, hopefully it will give us momentum for the games coming up," Newcastle manager Chris Hughton told reporters. "We showed great character and some good finishing to get back in the game."

Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti said he was pleased with his young team's display.

"We are disappointed about the result, but absolutely not about the performance," he said. "We had a fantastic reaction and showed good spirit when it was 11 against 10.

"We now know we can count in the future on these young players, but tonight was not our priority for the season."

Former England striker Michael Owen struck twice to send holders Manchester United through to the last 16 after coming from a goal down at Scunthorpe United.

Josh Wright put Scunthorpe ahead in the 19th minute before Darron Gibson equalized to open the floodgates.

Defender Chris Smalling made it 2-1, former England striker Owen grabbed his first after halftime and Park Ji-sung scored with a low shot into the corner.

Frenchman Gerard Houllier celebrated a 3-1 victory over Blackburn Rovers in his first match as Aston Villa manager with Ashley Young scoring twice in two minutes.

West Brom knocked out big-spending Manchester City 2-1 with two second-half goals in two minutes after Jo had put the visitors ahead.

Striker Simon Cox grabbed the winner in the 57th minute, tucking a precise shot past goalkeeper Shay Given.

SHB Danang exit from AFC cup

HCMC - V-League 2009 champions SHB Danang ended their remarkable performance in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup as they lost 3-5 to Al Riffa of Bahrain in the quarterfinal second leg at Chi Lang Stadium in Vietnam on Tuesday.

Al Riffa eased through to the last four of the AFC Cup as the Bahrain side won 8-3 on aggregate. The Vietnamese side suffered 0-3 loss to their opponents in the first leg in Bahrain last week.

Hussain Salman scored twice for the visitors while Hamad Alanezi and substitutes Abuda (Adailson Pereira Coelho) and Abdulrahman Mubarak also netted one goal each for their team while striker Sebastian Gaston Merlo made a hat-trick for the hosts but it was not enough for the Vietnamese side to overcome.

SHB Danang faced some difficulties when they had only 14 players and two goalkeepers in their line-up and coach Le Huynh Duc’s players showed poor performance in the first leg. Moreover, Danang failed to defend their title in the V-League last season, they just ranked sixth in the ranking table.

However, coach Le Huynh Duc welcomed back hotshot striker Sebastian Gaston Merlo for the Vietnamese side in the game. The Argentinean forwarder, who has scored five goals in the tournament so far, was suspended for the first leg in Bahrain last week.

Meanwhile, Al Riffa coach Jose Garrido was confident that his team would become the first team to reach the AFC Cup last four. Winning by three goals gave Al Riffa a big advantage ahead of the return game at Danang’s home ground.

The visitors placed more pressure on the Danang defending lines right from the start and Husain Salman opened the score for Al Riffa just nine minutes into the game.

After the goal, Danang bound back and created some scoring chances and Sebastian Gaston Merlo equalized the game in the 14th minute after receiving the ball from Phan Thanh Hung’s cross and Nicolas missed the best chance as his shot was denied by Al Riffa goalkeeper Mahmoud Abdulla in the 35th minute.

But the home side took an advance in the end of the first half as Merlo scored his second goal when he made no mistake in a penalty kick.

Al Riffa dominated the game in the second half as their forwarders put more pressure on Danang defending line and Husain Salman leveled the score for his team in the 51st minute

Danang’s hopes faded as Alanezi put the visitors in front shortly afterwards and first-half substitute Abuda extended the lead in the 72nd minute. However, Merlo completed his hat-trick in the 82nd minute before Mubarak finalized the at 5-3 in stoppage time to secure a 8-3 win on aggregate for Al Riffa.

SHB Danang advanced to the quarterfinal round of the AFC Cup after beating another Vietnamese representative Becamex Binh Duong 4-3 in the qualifying round. The former V-League champions ended their group competition as Group H’s winners with an unbeaten record, three points ahead of Port Authority FC from Thailand. SHB Danang were in Group H with Thai champions Port Authority FC, Wofoo Tai Po from Hong Kong and Geylang United from Singapore.

Hosts Vietnam humiliated at Hanoi football cup

Hosts Vietnam were beaten 2-0 by Australia on Wednesday, the second match-day of the Thang Long-Hanoi Football Cup.

The Socceroos sank the Henrique Calisto-coached side with two goals in the first half after displaying dominance in both physical fitness, speed and ball possession.

In the 19th minute, the player wearing number 11 jersey of the Socceroos, Jason Hoffman, separated two rival central defenders Nhu Thanh and Phuoc Tu and invaded the box to score his opening goal.

Seventeen minutes later, Tahj Rodney Minniecon escaped the offside trap of the defensive wall of Vietnam to double the scores.

Vietnam, who romped past Kuwait 3-0 on Monday, could almost set up no clear chances to threat the Australian goalkeeper Andrew James Redmayne after the visiting team performed close fighting for the ball to take advantage of their height and fitness.

It leaves no space for Vietnamese players to manage.

The hosts strived to launch more attacking efforts in the second half of the match but failed to convert any goal.

In the other game of the match-day two, North Korea, who won Australia 1-0 in the opening round, found their second straight victory after beating Kuwait 1-0 and are leading the table with six points.

The September 20-24 tournament to celebrate the 1,000 anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi has four teams partaking in single round robin format with the champions to pocket US$20,000. Two runners-up get $10,000 and $5,000 respectively.

In the last match-day on Friday, Vietnam will take on North Korea and Australia to face Kuwait.

“My biggest concern is hot weather here, that may badly affect the Socceroos,” Vidmar told Tuoi Tre. “We will perform an exciting game today.”

After the loss over the North Korea, the Socceroos have made no training since. On Tuesday, the players and team managers relaxed in swimming pool and guided children at Hanoi SOS Village playing football.

Meanwhile, hard-working players of the North Korean side keep on encamping in the last three days since they arrived in Vietnam.

Besides training on field and having meals, they all keep on camping in hotel and refuse to reply the media.
