HA NOI — The women's football team would put aside its disappointment at not being able to defend its title at the Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia and focus on the FIFA Women's Olympic Football Tournament 2012 qualifying campaign next month, Chinese coach Chen Yun Fat said.

The Indonesian organising committee has announced that female football will not be played at the Southeast Asian Games this year.

Viet Nam Olympic Committee general secretary Hoang Vinh Giang said it would be difficult to change the committee's decision.

Chen said: "At present, the team are training their physical strength at Tam Dao Sports Centre in the northern province of Vinh Phuc where the weather is very severe. It rains all day and is very cold.

"We always define that we must try our best against any rival at any tournament."

Chen also revealed that six young talented footballers had been added to the team and that the FIFA qualifiers tournament would hone their skills and experience.

The Asian Zone qualifiers start in March having three phases until September to determine the two teams that will represent Asia.

Viet Nam is in group A of the draw, which comprises Thailand, Hong Kong, Chinese Taipei and Myanmar.

Group A and seven other teams from groups B and C – India, Uzbekistan, Bangladesh, Bahrain, Iran, Palestine and Jordan – will take part in the inaugural phase of qualification that kicks off on March 8 and winds up on March 27. — VNS

The new season of the national football championship, V-League, begins this weekend. It is the first time all clubs are now operating as official businesses. It also marks the biggest-ever prize money for the victory team as well as a TV broadcast deal with a private company. Viet Nam News spoke to Le Hung Dung, deputy chairman of the Viet Nam Football Federation (VFF), about the new season, the use of sponsorship money and the plans to improve the quality of V-League and make it more professional.

The new V-League football season will begin today. The tournament definitely has new features compared to the 2010 season. Could you tell us what they are?

This is the first season all 14 participating clubs are recognised as businesses, according to regulations of the FIFA and Asian Football Confederation (AFC).

Besides that, this year's V-League also has other new features. The quality will improve because of the bigger prize money, which is strong motivation for clubs to play their best. I think there will be many aggressive matches.

There are also more matches to be broadcast live than in previous seasons and this will help further enhance the brand and image of the V-League.

Are there any changes in the regulation of the number of foreign players on the pitch at one time?

National football championship kicks off with Ha Noi derby

The new season of the 2011 national football championship, Eximbank V-League 2011, will start this weekend with seven matches across the country.

Some notable first-round matches include defending champions Ha Noi T&T vs Hoa Phat Ha Noi, Becamex Binh Duong vs Ninh Binh, SHB Da Nang vs Hoang Anh Gia Lai.

The champions will receive a total of VND3 billion ($150,000), thrice higher than that of 2010. The runners-up pocket VND1.5 billion ($75,000) and the third team gets VND750 million ($37,500).

In addition, the organisers will also award a fair play prize of VND200 million ($10,000), and a prize of VND20 million ($1,000) for the best coach of the season.

The best scorer also pockets VND20 million ($1,000), the best fan club, VND20 million ($1,000), and the best team of the month, VND30 million ($1,500).

This year, the federation will apply the 4-3 rule. Each club will be allowed to register four foreign players on the team list and they are allowed to field a maximum of three on the pitch at once instead of last year's 5-3 rule.

I support the use of foreign players in the V-League. Not only is it an inevitable trend but it also brings benefit to Viet Nam football.

Foreign players help improve the quality of local players, which, in turn, contributed to the increasingly improved quality of the national team. The evidence is that Viet Nam are playing well in recent years.

The team no longer fears taller opponents and can even play with many strong teams from the Middle East on an equal footing. We have the disadvantages of size and physical strength as well as a poor training facility.

I think that V-League is the best foundation for the national team. However, we limit the number of foreign players playing on the pitch for the sake of the national team. I support players of Vietnamese origin like American player Lee Nguyen The Anh, who could receive Vietnamese nationality and play for the national team.

Does VFF has any policy to encourage clubs to give talented young players more opportunities to play in order to create sources for the Olympic team in the 26th SEA Games in Indonesia this year?

VFF will create a legal framework to encourage and allow clubs to do that but it is the owners and coaches who have the right to field the players on the pitch. The federation does not have the right to tell clubs which players they should field.

The Viet Nam Export Import Commercial Joint-Stock Bank (Viet Nam Eximbank) decided to sponsor V-League for three successive seasons, with the sponsorship value of VND90 billion (US$4.5 million). How will VFF use the money to make the V-League better?

I need to make it clear that Viet Nam Eximbank will sponsor V-League three successive seasons, with sponsorship value of the next season being higher than the previous season by 10 per cent. So the total sponsorship value of all three seasons would be VND100 billion ($5 million).

After every season, Viet Nam Eximbank and VFF will sit down and talk about how VFF used the money and what Viet Nam Eximbank gained from this sponsorship.

The sponsorship deal will be stopped if it does not bring the desired effect in terms of the promotion to the bank and if the quality of V-League declines.

The federation will have plans to use the money it gets from V-League. I am responsible for financial issues of the federation, so I will ask the general secretary and related divisions to carefully use the money to ensure that it is used efficiently and for good purposes. — VNS

HCM CITY — Well-paid local football stars are increasingly looking to the investment sector as a way of supplementing their incomes.

The most recent sports star to go into business is national Olympic team's goalkeeper Bui Tan Truong, who received VND5 billion (US$250,000) for an extended three-year contract with V-League football club Dong Thap last year.

Truong, who is also a senior national team keeper, invested more than VND 1billion in a joint complex of six artificial-turf pitches with Nguyen Ngoc Anh Tu, who works for a military company.

The complex called Sai Gon Football Club K2 is on Tran Van Du Street, Tan Binh District and has six pitches for five-person games. Each pitch has 12 lights.

"Truong is a good player and a well-behaved person. So I decided to ask him to join me in this complex, which is worth about VND4 billion ($200,000)," Tu said, adding that he will open a sports shop in the facility.

"I am a player, so opening mini-artificial turf business is something I am familiar with," said Truong, who also is investing his money to open an internet shop for his wife and buy a 16-seat Mercedes-Benz car for his brother.

"I am sometimes away to play football and Tu will manage the business. We believe in each other. After one week of operation, I feel optimistic about our success," he said.

Although the complex has only been open for a week during pre-Lunar New Year holidays, not a prime time for his target customers, many youth visited the complex yesterday evening.

Truong is not the first football star to use his earnings in this way.

Le Huynh Duc, national team's former striker and now coach of former V-League champion, SHB Da Nang, has sports shops in HCM City and Da Nang.

However, star striker Le Cong Vinh, who once opened a restaurant in Vinh Yen city of Vinh Phuc Province with Ha Noi T&T teammate Duong Hong Son, said many players did not have enough time to devote to management.

But he also pointed that managing an artificial grass-turf business was not as difficult or time-consuming.

Last year, the National Olympic team player Pham Thanh Luong opened a cafe named Diva in Ha Noi while the national team striker Nguyen Anh Duc did the same with a chain of shops that sells sports equipment in Binh Duong Province and HCM City. — VNS

Cheers to a new spirit in Vietnam

A Confucius Vietnam is embracing cheerleading as schools and universities nationwide see their most acrobatic beauties doing stunts in style at sport events or during cheerleading contests themselves.

That very American activity with its signature pompoms, tumbling and of course cheering is no more an alien concept in Vietnam as the ‘sport’ has become more and more popular through Hollywood teen movies like Bring It On or High School Musicals.

In fact, it was not until less than 10 years ago that a tiny fraction of the Vietnamese youths came to know what cheerleading really entailed.

The year 2010 can be considered the first milestone in the Vietnamese cheerleading history, when cheerleading was, for the first time, included in U-league, the national varsity contest for university students.

Magnificent waves of skilful cheerleaders in fancy clothes tumbling, jumping, and dancing to highly stimulating music managed to grab attention at the Tan Binh Stadium recently. It is a clear sign cheerleading would become a popular and attractive activity to Vietnamese youths in the near future.

Nguyen Ha Mi, a fourth-year student at the Foreign Trade University and also member of this school’s cheerleading team said “This activity requires great teamwork. Mutual trust is the most important factor. If you don’t trust yourselves or your teammates, you can never form the human pyramid”.

"The acts must be stimulating, young and fresh. And the stunts are the spirit that brings motivation to the sports team that you cheer for”

However, as cheerleading in Vietnam is still in its infancy, those interested in this encounter great difficulties and shortfalls.

Brand new sport

The cheerleading teams participating in U-league shared that they first pursued cheerleading with many no’s: no coach, no expert, no music mixer and no practice room.

However, there is a yes: their love.

Nguyen Le Thanh Long, a head cheerleader at HCMC University of Pedagogy told Tuoi Tre his team had to learn from videos on Youtube and tried to imitate them.

Long’s squad can now form a firm human pyramid.

During a morning practice session in cheerleading on January 8, a member at Hong Bang University had to leave due to injury caused by a teammate’s inaccurate landing, and 20 minutes later, two others left for similar reasons.

Another difficulty is the availability of practice places. The Hanoi’s Foreign Trade University’s team had to practice on their concrete schoolyard before competition, and most suffered scratches and minor injuries all over due to the lack of proper mats.

The obstacles, nevertheless, did not lower the Vietnamese spirit and passion for this lively sport.

Cheerleading competition

In the cheerleading competition on the 8th and 9th last week, four teams from Da Nang’s Duc Tri College, HCMC’s University of Pedagogy, Hanoi’s Foreign Trade University and Hong Bang University presented to spectators in Tan Binh Stadium spectacular performances, energetic dances, skillful moves, lively cheers, stunts, tumbling, synchronization, creativity, and showmanship.

The competition is judged more professional and high-quality than any other previous cheerleading contests in HCMC.

Cheerleading originated in the United States, particularly from Princeton University, with approximately 1.5 million participants and the number has started to grow globally.

Cheerleading began as a student directed the crowds to yell a certain phrase to cheer for their home team, but gradually developed into our modern cheerleading in 1980s incorporating difficult stunt sequences and gymnastics.

US-based footballer eyes Vietnam national team

Vietnamese-American footballer Lee Nguyen, who played for the US national squad in 2007 as substitutes, is applying for Vietnamese citizenship to be eligible to play in the Vietnamese national team.

The 24-year-old midfielder, who is working for Binh Duong FC, told Tuoi Tre that filing for Vietnam naturalization is an initial move aimed at being called into the Vietnamese national football team in the future.

“It is his legitimate aspirations and so, we will offer him legal support to attain the status,” said Binh Duong club’s general director Doan Van Ut.

Nguyen almost rose to stardom after returning to play for Vietnam’s top-flight V-League club Hoang Anh Gia Lai in 2009 and scored 12 goals from his 24 appearances.

He had appeared in the US side as substitutes to play against Paraguay and Colombia at the 2007 Copa America and staged a friendly match with China, but scored none.

According to FIFA regulation, a player who joins the national team of a country from the starting line-up and plays no more than three games is still permitted to play for other national team.

Thus, the plan of Lee Nguyen to play for Vietnam is still within his reach if he is granted citizenship and selected by head coach of Vietnam, according to Vietnam’s football governing body – VFF general secretary Tran Quoc Tuan.

HA NOI — Defending V-League champions Ha Noi T&T are ready for a tough season opener against Song Lam Nghe An in the Super Cup at the Hang Day Stadium next Sunday.

The Hanoian team, who won the premier league in June, will play their long-term rivals and National Cup winners Nghe An in a widely anticipated match before hosting Hoa Phat Ha Noi in the opening game of the national championships on January 22.

T&T boast a string of stars including goalie Duong Hong Son, the 2008 player of the year, and captain Brazilian Cristiano Roland as well as maestro Le Hong Minh and Brazil's Cauce Benicio along with attacking midfielder Cao Sy Cuong.

Top striker Le Cong Vinh has yet to recover from a knee injury, but the team welcomes the services of newly-signed left winger Thach Bao Khanh from Thanh Hoa and striker Iuril from Ukraine.

"We have kept our key players who helped the club clinch the first trophy for a Hanoian team in 12 years. I expect Vinh to be back in action soon," said the club chairman, Nguyen Quoc Hoi.

Team coach Phan Thanh Hung has been watching the 24-year-old Iuril at the on-going Hoa Phat Football tournament before he is due to sign a contract next month.

However, Nghe An are not likely to go down without a fight and are planning on giving Ha Noi T&T a run for their money having just finished an intensive month of pre-season training.

They pose a serious attacking threat with the combination of Raiko Vidovic, Abdulrazak Ekpoki and Mitrovic Dalibor up front.

Nghe An go into the game full of confidence after defeating two-time V-League champions Hoang Anh Gia Lai 1-0 in the National Cup final in August.

They also have the added incentive of winning the Super Cup for a fourth time.

Super Cup glory

The Super Cup winners will receive a VND150 million (US$7,000) cash prize, with the runners-up pocketing VND70 million ($3,300).

Former The Cong, or the Army team, won the first Super Cup in 1999. Nghe An took home the cup in 2000, 2001, and 2002. They were finally beaten by Hoang Anh-Gia Lai, who held the title for the next two years.

Binh Duong also grabbed the title twice.

This is the 12th year that the event will be organised by the Tien Phong (Vanguard) newspaper and the Viet Nam Football Federation. The 584 Group is the cup's sponsors. — VNS

VFF to hold national meeting on Suzuki Cup loss

The Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) said it would convene a meeting next month with coaches and analysts to learn why Vietnam - the defending champion - was eliminated from the ongoing Suzuki Cup 2010.

It will be a chance to find out truths and draw out lessons after the Vietnamese national football team were eliminated at the semifinals, VFF’s chairman Nguyen Trong Hy told Tuoi Tre.

Domestic coaches Duong Ngoc Hung and Mai Duc Chung agreed with the idea.

“I think we should leave constructive comments rather than harsh criticism because the result is unchangeable,” Hung said. “From my point of view, Vietnam’s failure can be attributed to injuries and form.”

“We actually did not have really sharp and strong men to convert chance into goals.

“Coach Henrique Calisto had to use only one man playing as forward (Anh Duc) together with two others as wing-attacking midfielders as per our team’s offensive tactics.

“The formation brought triumph to Vietnam two years ago but this time our opponents are accustomed to it and have found effective ways to weaken it.”

Failure can be also attributed to the fact that Vietnam underestimated the true strength of their opponents’ counter-attack tactics, as evidenced in the 2-0 loss to the Philippines and the 2-0 defeat by Malaysia in the first-leg semifinal clash.

Coach Chung proposed players of the national team should train with their clubs instead of camping for three months in advance.

Chung also advised splitting long training periods into smaller time scales to help players have more time for families.

The other thing is Vietnam’s wrong strategy.

In the first-leg semis in Kuala Lumpur, Vietnam should have played defensively to gain at least one point and would later push for victory in the second leg, according to the coach.

“I do not mean totally defensive tactics, but obviously it is the only way our team should have performed since we did not have two skillful wing defenders Quang Thanh and Viet Cuong.

“Wing attacks became weaker and more monotonous as two wings-attacking midfielders got tired and did not receive necessary supports from two wing defenders.”

Coach Chung confirmed he would address the upcoming meeting about Vietnam’s line-up. Viet Thang, who has yet to completely recover from injury, was in the starting line-up while a healthy Quang Hai was on the bench.

Calisto mystified by captain's retirement

by Tien Thanh

HCM CITY — The captain of the national team, Nguyen Minh Phuong, has decided to retire from international football following Viet Nam's elimination from the AFF Suzuki Cup tournament last week.

National coach Henrique Calisto has denied any knowledge of the decision though Phuong told Viet Nam News that he has informed both the Portuguese coach and the football authorities.

"I am 30 now and feel a little bit old.

"I decided to withdraw from the team because I want to allow young players to get more chances to play for the national team."

Asked about his most memorable moment for the national team, he said without hesitation: "It was when Viet Nam beat Thailand at My Dinh [Stadium in Ha Noi] to lift the AFF Cup trophy for the first time in the history of the tournament."

This was in 2008. In the second leg of the final in Ha Noi, Phuong trapped a free kick and drove the ball to striker Le Cong Vinh who leaped to glance into the far corner to help Viet Nam beat Thailand 3-2 on aggregate.

Phuong made his international debut in 1999 when he played in the Olympic qualifiers and then played for the full national team in 2002. He played 73 times and scored 12 goals.

He won two V-League titles with his former club, Dong Tam Long An.

Phuong has signed a three-year contract with SHB Da Nang for whom he will play in the V-League season that kicks off next month.

Calisto told Viet Nam News: "I have not heard anything about Phuong's retirement. I have not heard any players expressing their desire to retire."

He also refused to talk about changes to the team after the AFF Cup.

He admitted to making some mistakes in the semi-finals against Malaysia but pointed out that the loss of too many important players like Le Cong Vinh and Pham Van Quyen just ahead of the AFF Cup also took a toll.

The Portuguese coach left for home last night for a one-month Christmas break and will return later next month. — VNS

Incentive offered to football team

Players on the Viet Nam national team will receive a bonus of at least VND7 billion (US$350,000) if they successfully defend their AFF Cup title.

The Viet Nam Football Federation (VFF) will contribute VND5 billion ($250,000) while the other VND2 billion ($100,000) comes from VP Bank.

"If they win, they will also get awards from VFF's partners and sponsors," said VFF chairman Nguyen Trong Hy. These could be up to VND10 billlion ($500,000).

After winning the championship two years ago, the team was given VND4 billion ($200,000) by the VFF.

Responding to the news, national team manager Henrique Calisto thanked people for their support but said his players were fighting out of a sense of responsibility and national pride, not for bonuses.

Minh hits career-high ranking

Nguyen Tien Minh rose to a career-high, world No 5 International Badminton Federation ranking last weekend.

Minh climbed three places and now has 51,844 points. He is Viet Nam's highest ranked player.

He kicks off his 14th tournament of the year today at the Hong Kong Open. His rival will be the winner of the match between Dionysius of Indonesia and Hong Kong's Yun Hu.

Tu, Lan in Olympics judo qualifier

Two Vietnamese judo martial artists will take part in the London Olympics' qualifier in Tokyo on December 11-13.

Van Ngoc Tu who competes in the women's 48kg class and Nguyen Thi Lan, in the women's 54kg pool, are the best of Viet Nam's current crop. They have won international and regional titles.

The Tokyo qualifiers will give fighters a chance to collect more points towards earning a ticket to compete in London in 2012.

Lifter Tuan faces doping ban

Weight lifter Hoang Anh Tuan may face a one-year ban after his ‘B' sample tested positive for oxilofrine, a substance forbidden by the World Anti-Doping Agency.

The Beijing Olympic silver medallist said he did not use banned substances but had used some flu medicine during his training course in China in October without advice from a doctor. Oxilofrine is one ingredient in many medicines used to treat common illnesses.

Tuan, who was Viet Nam's number one hope at last month's ASIAD, was banned from participating in the event just two days before the opening ceremony.

The lifter is waiting for the final decision from the International Weight lifting Federation. If found guilty, he will receive a minimum one-year ban, and may not be able to join Viet Nam at next December's SEA Games in Indonesia. — VNS

HCM CITY — The first round of the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup football championship finished in a way that caught football fans and experts by surprise, with old hands stamping their authority onto the regional football map.

The first four matches in two groups finished unexpectedly in both scoring and what happened on the pitch.

The organisers and sponsors were delighted as thousands of football fans arrived at My Dinh stadium in Ha Noi and Gelora Bung Karno stadium in Jakarta, Indonesia, after slow ticket sales for a few days.

In the first match of group A in Jakarta, the pre-tournament title favourites, Thailand, were lacklustre during the match and had to chase Laos throughout the second half and only managed an equaliser in the last seconds of an injury time for a shameful 2-2 draw.

This is the first draw Laos has had against Thailand for 35 years.

Contrary to popular opinion that it would be a tightly contested match, hosts Indonesia thrashed Malaysia with an unexpected score of 5-1, although the latter scored first.

The group B, which took place in Ha Noi, happened with an almost similar script but the group's semi-finalist contenders, Singapore and Viet Nam, did better than Thailand and Indonesia.

There were some regretful moments for Singapore, which controlled much of the match and had numerous chances, including one-on-one opportunities, but they only got one point after letting the Philippines equal the score in the last seconds of the stoppage time.

The Philippines deserved its first draw against Singapore at the AFF Cup for their determined effort.

Viet Nam's 7-1 massacre of Myanmar in the opener has been the most impressive and pleasant surprise.

Even Vietnamese coach Henrique Calisto, who was confident of a win for his team before the match, could not imagine his players could create such an outstanding display.

"The tournament started with many wonderful surprises when Laos and the Philippines got good results from stronger Thailand and Singapore. What happened on the pitch proved that Laos and the Philippines has showed real progress," said Tran Cong Minh, former national defender, who spoke to Viet Nam News by telephone.

"The Philippines showed that they are an organised team, not only on how to defend but how to attack. In my opinion, however, the skill level is not as good as Vietnamese players and if Viet Nam plays to its strength, a win is assured," said Minh, who was delighted with the performance from the host team.

Minh also said that after the first round Indonesia was emerging as a serious contender for the title, as they have a good team with many talented local and naturalised players.

Old hands

However, it is too soon to talk about any possibility of the further advancement of Laos and the Philippines when Laos will face Indonesia and Malaysia and the Philippines meet host Viet Nam and Myanmar next days.

Most experts, however, can see real progress from the team. In addition to investment in young football, it is helped by the expertise from foreign coaches, especially Austrian Alfred Riedl and Englishman David Booth.

Riedl, who worked as Viet Nam national team coach three times, is an old hand in Southeast Asia football.

Before taking charge of the Indonesian team, Riedl helped Laos finish in third at the Southeast Asia (SEA) Games last year for the first time.

Laos's current coach, David Booth, who also had experiences in regional football with working periods in Myanmar and Thailand, helped Laos continued the momentum it had gained from the SEA Games last year.

In spite of suffering a 1-1 draw in the opener against the underdogs the Philippines, Serbian coach Radojko Avramovic's Singaporean team had a good display and enough chances for a comfortable win.

The most noticeable new face in the dugout was Thailand's English coach Bryan Robson, but the region's most famous and arguably highest- paid coach had a poor start at his AFF Suzuki Cup campaign.

"Besides having extensive experience with regional football and understanding players, these coaches (Calisto, Riedl, Avramovic and Booth) are very serious about their work," Minh, who once worked as assitant for Calisto and Riedl, said.

"Thailand's bad start is partly due to the fact that they did not have a good preparation because some Thai players had just returned to the team after Thailand's Football Association Cup final. But I still believe they will bounce back in the next matches and qualify for the semi-finals." — VNS

HCMC – Thailand were held to a 2-2 draw by underdog Laos in their opener at the Southeast Asian championship/AFF Suzuki Cup 2010 at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta, Indonesia on Wednesday while hosts Indonesia thrashed Malaysia 5-1 in a later game.

Thailand dominated ball possession throughout the first half while the Lao side relied on rare counter attacks. Thailand had some better scoring opportunities in the first minutes of the half but the Lao side defense resiliently held out to keep a clean sheet.

The second half was a different story, Laos surprisingly took an advance in the 53rd minute when Inthammavong scored for his team with a header in a rapid attack. However, Sarayoot Chaikamdee leveled for the Thai side in the 68th minute.

Laos increased pressure after the goal and Sysomvang easily defeated Thai goalie Sinthaweechai Hathairattanakool in the 82nd minute with an unstoppable kick beside the penalty box before Sarayoot scored his second goal for Thai side in the injury time, leaving the score at 2-2 upon the referee’s whistle at the end of the game.

Meanwhile, under heavy pressure from local fans, hosts Indonesia put their rivals under a lot of pressure, while the Malaysian team looked composed and confident throughout and caused the home team problems with their rare counter attacks.

Norshahrul Idlan Talaha opened the score for the Malaysian side in the 18th minute. However, the home side bounced back from the loss, Hamzani Omar equalized just three minutes later and Gonzales helped the home side advance in the 33rd minute.

The Indonesian players had the most possession over the second half and managed to create dozens of chances. Ridwan netted for his team in the 52nd minute and Arif Suyono contributed the fourth goal in the 76th minute before Bachdim finalized the game at 5-1 in the 90th minute.

Group A matches resume in Indonesia on Saturday with Thailand facing Malaysia at 5:00 p.m. and Indonesia against Laos at 7:30 p.m.

* Vietnam head coach Henrique Calisto just named a 22member squad for the AFF Cup on Wednesday, just one day before meeting Myanmar in their opener. The last players withdrawn were defender Nguyen Minh Duc, who suffered injury, veteran midfielder Tran Duy Quang and inexperienced midfielder Nguyen Ngoc Dieu.

Striker Nguyen Viet Thang, who has recovered from a minor injury in the friendly game against Singapore, remained doubtful for the games in the qualifying round while defender Huynh Quang Thanh was called back to full training.

Vietnam’s national team suffered a big loss this year as star striker Le Cong Vinh missed out because of knee injury. Earlier, former striker Pham Van Quyen has lost his chance with the national squad because of injury and halfback Mai Tien Thanh also left the national team due to injury.

Calisto faces some difficult problems in the attacking options as first-choice strikers Nguyen Viet Thang and Nguyen Anh Duc but Le Sy Manh seems to need more experience in big tournaments and perform better as a substitute.

Though many key Vietnamese footballers have suffered injury, coach Calisto has predicted his team will make a good result in its group for one of the two tickets to the semi-finals. However, the Vietnamese coach has warned his men not to underestimate Myanmar in their opener.

On Thursday, Vietnam will meet Myanmar at My Dinh National Stadium at 7:30 p.m. while Singapore will face the Philippines at 5:00 p.m. at the same venue.

Coach fears about fitness at Southeast Asian champs

Vietnamese football coach Henrique Calisto told Tuoi Tre the team are not at their physical peak for the AFF Suzuki Cup that kicks off December 1.

“The recipe for a team to succeed includes three things – unity, quality, and motivation,” the Portuguese-born coach said ahead of the Southeast Asian Football Championship to be held in Vietnam and Indonesia until December 29.

Vietnam are now behind Thailand and Singapore in terms of these criteria, he said.

He pointed to the Asian Games in Guangzhou this month, saying the Vietnamese, except for goalie Tan Truong and striker Anh Duc, were smaller than the smallest player in the Iranian team who were themselves only average-sized for Asia.

Vietnam were eliminated in the group stage at the competition.

Nevertheless, Vietnam have not chosen any of their four naturalized foreign players while Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, and the Philippines have been doing so for a long time.

The non-selection of the foreign players, who are physically superior to the Vietnamese, is a weakness, Calisto said.

Among other problems for the team is the poor surface at Hanoi’s My Dinh national stadium where they will play in group B, he said. Since Vietnam play a short passing game, they will find the bumpy surface unsuitable, he explained.

Singapore, who traditionally play long balls, will benefit, he added.

Calisto and players conferred overdue Labor Order

Coach Henrique Calisto and six players from the Vietnamese national football team were conferred Sunday the Labor Order, Third Class, a state-level honorary badge for their winning the AFF Cup 2008.

The Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) bestowed the honor on the Portuguese coach, striker Cong Vinh, half-backs Minh Phuong and Tai Em, midfielders Nhu Thanh and Phuoc Tu, and goalkeeper Hong Son for their winning the AFF Cup back in 2008 (Southeast Asia Football Championship).

VFF attributed the postponement in granting the honor to repeated delays in convening the national team.

At the ceremony in Hanoi, VFF President Nguyen Trong Hy wished the team success in the upcoming ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup, set to kick off on December 1.

In preparation for the tournament, the squad will have a practicing session today to review its formation for the last time. After that, Calisto will remove three players from the current roster to reduce the team to 22 players, the maximum allowed for each team.

HA NOI — Nine-year-old Dinh Anh Hoang has spent two months training at the Ha Noi T&T table tennis centre.

Anh, from the Central Highlands province of Dac Lac, was recruited by the Ha Noi-based team following his impressive performance at the Junior Table Tennis Championship in June.

The boy trains in the 7-11 age group at the centre, which is home to 13 talented players from throughout the country. The centre also hosts 12-15 and 16-18 age groups.

"I enjoy life and the training at the centre. I hope to stand on the medal winner's podium someday, but I'll have to sweat during training now," Hoang said.

"My parents were worried about letting me go. But they're satisfied at the progress I've made in the less than two months I've spent away from home. They came here to visit, and saw me doing everything for myself.

"My day starts with early morning exercises, and five days a week playing table tennis with coaches in the morning and evening after school in the afternoon."

Hoang, whose home is 1,000km from Ha Noi, and his team-mates receive a full education at the Xuan La School on the banks of West Lake.

According to T&T coach Vu Manh Cuong, the club faces difficulties in luring players to help the team's development.

"We have enrolled only half of the team's target since 2008. It's because parents are hesitant about sending their kids to train as professional players," Cuong said.

"Hoang is the youngest player whose family we have managed to convince to be allowed to join the team. It was tough negotiating with his parents. However Hoang's parents were finally convinced by quality of the training facilities when they witnessed their son's progress in the sport and life," the 37-year-old coach added.

At the All-stars Junior tournament last month, the young team finished first in medal tally with two golds and one silver, beating off table tennis powerhouses Hai Duong and the Army.

The triumph resulted from the two years of hard work by the first set of juniors - the foundation of a professional team in future.

At the National Juniors Table Tennis Tournament in Vinh Long Province, Ta Hung Khanh and Pham Thi Thu Huong also bagged two golds to help the team finish fourth.

Two years ago, Vu Manh Cuong played for the T&T table tennis team at the National Table Tennis Championship, along with former national team members Nguyen Quy Tai and Do Tuan Son. However, the team withdrew from the championship a year later, due to a paucity of players after Tai and Son left.

"It was a disaster, as we had no players coming through at that time. We signed Tai and Son from Hai Duong as a spur of the moment decision and we paid the price for our lack of strength in depth."

"I recognise that a strong team must rest on a foundation of a good training system with elite kids, not just relying on mature players, as we did. We expect future successes with a generation of youngsters from our centre over next five years," the coach said.

T&T was the first team in Viet Nam to be owned by a business - the Ha Noi T&T Group, which transformed club's status from an amateur club into a professional outfit, just as the company had done for its football team.

However, the team currently survives off a modest investment of VND2 billion (US$103,000) per year, which is just half the required funding for a professional team.

The team have yet to own their own training centre for the two dozen athletes who will enrol for the five-year training period.

T&T Group chairman, Do Quang Hien also said the group has sought a co-operation agreement with the Ha Noi Sports Administration to establish a training centre at the My Dinh Sports Complex, where he hoped the table tennis team would be able to focus on a period of prolonged development.

"We want to train a generation of high quality table tennis players. They will grow up at our centre. We can buy the best Vietnamese players for immediate success, but it's a short-term vision and lacks a stable foundation," Hien said.

The T&T team coach said the first players from the centre would be sent to intensive training sessions in China over the next two years. — VNS
