Southeast Asian Vovinam Federation set up

Meeting to announce the establishment of the Southeast Asian Vovinam Federation (SEAVF) was held in Cambodia on Tuesday, a token of the wide spreading of the Vietnamese martial arts after the world federation and the Asian federation were set up in 2008 and February this year respectively.

Representatives of five countries including Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Laos and Cambodia attended the event.

Thailand and Brunei didn’t attend the ceremony, but they technically support the establishment since the two are members of the World Vovinam Federation from 2008.

At the meeting, delegates voted Cambodian Vovinam Federation chairman Rat Sokhorn as SEAVF chairman. Vo Danh Hai from Vietnam and three representatives from Indonesia, Laos and Malaysia are vice chairmen.

Last year, Vovinam was approved to be included for official competition at the 2011 Southeast Asian Games in Jakarta in November.

Vovinam, created in 1938 in Hanoi by Master Nguyen Loc, is now popular in around 35 countries and territories where there are hundreds of thousands of practitioners.

The fighting technique, which involves both unarmed and weapons combat, uses the opponent’s momentum to counterattack. Its range of techniques includes the use of hands, elbows, and legs to throw, wrestle, and lever.

HA NOI — Vietnamese amateur Nguyen Dang Phong trained for two years before winning his first title at the National Junior Golf Championship at the Ocean Dunes Golf Club in Phan Thiet City.

Phong, 12, from Ha Noi, fought back to take the title in a play-off with a birdie on the fourth hole against HCM City-born Nguyen Thanh Trung after finishing level after two rounds at the championship in August.

The 12-year-old has held a handicap of 21 since he began practising every weekend at the Chi Linh Stars Golf and Country Club in Hai Duong City from the age of 10.

Phong's progress earned him a sponsorship from the Ha Noi Golf Association last year.

"I love playing golf and I go to the course every weekend with my parents. I also like playing other sports such as football and table tennis, but I prefer golf as I have been playing it since I was six," Phong said, adding that the sport helped him to stay fit and gave him confidence for his studies.

The 6th grade student of the Ha Noi-based Singapore International School was one of the first young prodigies to complete a training programme that was organised by the Ha Noi Golf Association last year.

"We will select six 12-year-old kids for an elite training programme next year, of which the top four will form a squad to compete at international junior tournaments," said vice chairman of Ha Noi Golf Association Dong Van Tiep.

"The association will provide training facilities for and pay for coaching fees as well as find sponsors for further training abroad," Tiep explained.

Phong's father, Nguyen Dang Khanh said he wants his son to continue playing his favourite sport, rather than getting into trouble on the streets.

"My son began playing golf at a young age. My wife and I used to play every weekend and we've been taking him with us since he was six," Khanh said, adding that his son can hit a 180-yard drive with ease.

"I was surprised by how quickly he fell in love with golf. He's very skilful and his swing and putting are better than mine."

"I encourage him to play as an amateur while studying hard. He can make his own decision about becoming a professional golfer after college," Khanh said.

Khanh said he plans to send his son to study in the US, where he can study and train at the same time.

The Viet Nam Golf Association (VGA) is developing a programme to identify talented young golfers in schools across the country.

The VGA has been seeking a long term sponsorship deal to get the project off the ground from next year.

"The association plans to introduce golf into the school curriculum from next year, but we have to find a strong enough sponsor to get it started," said the VGA's general secretary Nguyen Ngoc Chu.

"Golf will make its debut at junior and senior secondary schools rather than primary schools. Students from the ages of 11-15 will practise golf in school with further training on the golf course," Chu said.

Chu said he hoped the project would be a positive step and the association would try its best to reach a sponsorship deal soon.

"It's the best way to sustainably develop a sport. We can find a lot of fresh talent by introducing children to golf in school time," the general secretary said. — VNS

Malaysia claim first title at regional football

Despite suffering a 2-1 loss to Indonesia on Wednesday, Malaysia still won their first title at Southeast Asian football championship with a 4-2 win in total after two legs.

Goalkeeper Khairul Fahmi Che Mat saved an early penalty and Safee Sali netted his fifth goal of the tournament to take Malaysia to the final victory.

Trailing 3-0 from the first leg in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday, Indonesia staged in the game more aggressively in a bid to cut the deficit.

Mohammad Nasuha pulled back a goal with 18 minutes remaining and Muhammad Ridwan scored with a deflected effort two minutes from time to give Indonesia the win.

Malaysian Ashari Samsuddin launched the ball forward to Safee, who outpaced the Indonesian defense before lashing the ball into the top left corner of the net for his tournament-leading fifth goal.

The crowd, which included Indonesian president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, had filled every seat in the 85,000-capacity stadium nearly two hours before kick-off, hoping to roar their team on to the quick start that they needed to turn the tie around after their decisive loss in the first leg.

The Indonesian continued to press but could not manage another breakthrough until the 88th minute when Ridwan's shot from the edge of the box took a deflection off a Malaysian defender on its way past Khairul.

Bambang had a chance to net a third for the Indonesians in stoppage time but his free-kick was well saved by Khairul as the Malaysians easily hung on to claim the title.

HA NOI — Malaysia beat Indonesia 4-2 on aggregate to win the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup for the first time in the country's history yesterday in Jakarta, Indonesia.

A loss of 1-2 to the hosts in the final's second leg match could not stop Malaysia from opening a new chapter in the history of the regional football tournament which up until now had been dominated by three-time winners Thailand and Singapore.

Mohd Safee Sali opened the scoring for Malaysia nine minutes after the break. Until then Indonesia had made things difficult for their opponents, attacking aggressively with a view to levelling the three-goal deficit they faced after the first leg match.

The talented player who scored twice in the semi-final against Viet Nam got his goal after he received a long-range pass and shot truly into the net.

The goal made him the top striker of the tournament with five goals to his name.

Indonesia, with their President watching on, found their equaliser in the 71th minute when defender Mohammad Nasuha scored from near the edge of the box.

His team doubled their tally 17 minutes later when Muhammad Ridwan scored his third goal at the tournament. His strong shot deflected off a Malaysian player before entering the net.

Malaysia are surprise winners of the tournament. At the previous championship two years ago they were ousted in the qualifying round.

This time they were placed in the ‘group of death' together with Thailand and Indonesia and after their humiliating 1-5 loss to hosts Indonesia in the group stage, no one gave them a chance.

The team only made it through to the knockout stage after Thailand, the most powerful team in Southeast Asia, were eliminated from the championship.

However, after that they had a complete reversal of form. First there was a great 2-0 victory over defending champion Viet Nam in the semi-final and then a 3-0 victory over Indonesia in the final's first leg on Sunday.

It has been be a very successful year for Malaysia with two important titles going to them in the last twelve months. Last December Malaysia defeated Viet Nam 1-0 to claim the Southeast Asian Games Cup.

Yesterdays' match did not help Indonesia's coach Alfred Riedl shake off his ‘Mr Silver' moniker. Once again, he pocketed a silver medal, just as he has done on every single occasion he has taken a team to a tournament final. The previous occasions were when he worked with Viet Nam several years back. — VNS

RoK hands over restored music instruments

RoK hands over restored music instruments

The National Institute of Traditional Art Performance of the Republic
of Korea (RoK) on Dec. 29 handed over a set of Bien Chung (brass
bells) and Bien Khanh (stone gongs) to the Hue Imperial Relics
Preservation Centre (HIRPC).

This is the result of
the cooperation between HIRPC and the RoK, under which the RoK institute
helps to restore Bien Chung and Bien Khanh, percussion instruments of
Nha Nhac (Royal Court Music), as the techniques for making them have
been lost in Vietnam since early the 20th century. However, the
instruments are sill preserved in the RoK.

According to HIRPC Director Phung Phu, Bien Chung and Bien Khanh
percussion instruments were used in Hue royal orchestra under the Le
dynasty (1427-1788) and Nguyen dynasty (1802-1945).

The instruments will be given to the Hue Royal Traditional Arts Theatre
to be used on the occasions of traditional rituals during Hue
festivals.

Park il Hun, Director of the RoK
institute, expressed his hope that through the cooperation the world
will know more about the two countries’ traditional music./.

The Hanoian team, who won the premier league in June, will play their long-term rivals and National Cup winners Nghe An in a widely anticipated match before hosting Hoa Phat Ha Noi in the opening game of the national championships on January 22.

T&T boast a string of stars including goalie Duong Hong Son, the 2008 player of the year, and captain Brazilian Cristiano Roland as well as maestro Le Hong Minh and Brazil's Cauce Benicio along with attacking midfielder Cao Sy Cuong.

Top striker Le Cong Vinh has yet to recover from a knee injury, but the team welcomes the services of newly-signed left winger Thach Bao Khanh from Thanh Hoa and striker Iuril from Ukraine.

"We have kept our key players who helped the club clinch the first trophy for a Hanoian team in 12 years. I expect Vinh to be back in action soon," said the club chairman, Nguyen Quoc Hoi.

Team coach Phan Thanh Hung has been watching the 24-year-old Iuril at the on-going Hoa Phat Football tournament before he is due to sign a contract next month.

However, Nghe An are not likely to go down without a fight and are planning on giving Ha Noi T&T a run for their money having just finished an intensive month of pre-season training.

They pose a serious attacking threat with the combination of Raiko Vidovic, Abdulrazak Ekpoki and Mitrovic Dalibor up front.

Nghe An go into the game full of confidence after defeating two-time V-League champions Hoang Anh Gia Lai 1-0 in the National Cup final in August.

They also have the added incentive of winning the Super Cup for a fourth time.

Super Cup glory

The Super Cup winners will receive a VND150 million (US$7,000) cash prize, with the runners-up pocketing VND70 million ($3,300).

Former The Cong, or the Army team, won the first Super Cup in 1999. Nghe An took home the cup in 2000, 2001, and 2002. They were finally beaten by Hoang Anh-Gia Lai, who held the title for the next two years.

Binh Duong also grabbed the title twice.

This is the 12th year that the event will be organised by the Tien Phong (Vanguard) newspaper and the Viet Nam Football Federation. The 584 Group is the cup's sponsors. — VNS

During the last weekend of the 2009 V-League season, the city football witnessed the relegation of two clubs.

Sai Gon United was relegated to the Second Division despite a 2-0 win over Hoa Phat Ha Noi in the last match, and one day later, HCM City also suffered the same fate with a 3-2 defeat by Binh Duong.

There was no escaping the fact that city football had no representative in the 2010 V-League until Navibank Bank surprisingly bought the Military Zone 4 football club. They renamed it Navibank Sai Gon and chose Thong Nhat Stadium as its home ground.

However, Navibank Sai Gon was struggling at the bottom of the table throughout the season.

The club was relegated, but the fact that there were six fewer clubs in the First Division operating as a business handed Navibank a play-off with Quang Ninh. They escaped from relegation with a 2-0 win.

After being demoted to the First Division, HCM City continued its poor performance and had a disappointing season and only until the last round did the club escape from demotion.

Change for better

But the upcoming 2011 V-League season, the so-called professional football season, could be a different story as city-based clubs have made moves to build their teams that not only have survived the relegation but also have enough ability to move into the top half of the ranking.

Navibank splashed out a considerable amount of money on players, bringing in qualified strikers Nguyen Quang Hai from Khanh Hoa, Brazilian-Vietnamese striker Huynh Kesley Alves from Binh Duong and midfielder Luong Van Duoc Em from Dong Thap.

While Hai is the most prolific local striker last season with 13 goals, veteran Huynh Kesley has stamped his authority onto the V-League with his vast experience. Duoc Em was considered a promising young player last season.

"With new players joining the team and good preparation, we will try to finish the 2011 V-League at least in the middle of the table. We hope that the worries over the relegation will not be repeated," said Mai Duc Chung, head coach of Navibank Sai Gon.

By recruiting a foreign coach and bringing in some new faces, HCM City, the successor of the famous Sai Gon Port, has also made its intentions clear that they do not want to be a contender for the relegation in the next nine months.

The club recently signed a contract with Croatian coach Vjeran Simunic and hired Singaporean coach Robert Lim as a technical consultant. They have also recruited foreign players Lima and Cokolic from fellow club TDC Binh Duong.

Coach Simunic said that his team was ready for the new season. He believes the club will not have to face a battle to avoid relegation, as they did last season. — VNS

Viet Nam invite Arsenal for friendly

Viet Nam has invited English Premier League club Arsenal to play a friendly during their Asian tour next year, a source from the British sports marketing firm Strata said yesterday.

As scheduled, the Gunners will play three friendly matches in China and Viet Nam next summer.

The source also said it plans to seek a US$2 million sponsorship deal to pay for the Arsenal friendly.

In 2007, Arsenal established a football academy – the Arsenal-Hoang Anh Gia Lai JMG Football Academy – in a $4 million project with local Central Highlands team Hoang Anh Gia Lai.

The Premier League team also helped to construct a community football school – the Vinamilk-Arsenal Football School in HCM City to teach children to play football.

Last year, Viet Nam failed to invite Manchester United during their tours in Thailand.

Last November, ex-Manchester United and Liverpool including Andy Cole and Steve McManaman played in a two-day competition in Ha Noi.

In 2008, Viet Nam lost to Brazil's Olympic team, which included world stars Ronaldinho, Alexandre Pato, 2-0 in a friendly in Ha Noi. — VNS

US writers launch books on Vietnam war

US writers launch books on Vietnam war

In mid-December, two US veterans and writers came to Vietnam to launch their works about the Vietnam war.

Larry Heinemann and Bruce Weigl have returned to Vietnam many times in
their capacity as writers and veterans who served in the war from
1967-68. This time they came with gifts – “Paco’s Story”, a novel by
Heinemann, and “The Circle of Hanh”, a memoir by Weigl – published in a
Vietnamese language version by the Women’s Publishing House.

Both books draw on the background of the Vietnam war and post-war
obsessions. The war finished more than 40 years ago but for the US
veterans, their memories about it are still haunting.

Paco’s Story (1986), the second and most critically acclaimed novel by
Heinemann, won the 1987 National Book Award for Fiction. It was
published in English, German, French and Spanish, and now in Vietnamese
with the translation by Pham Anh Tuan.

Paco's Story
relates the post-war experiences of its protagonist, haunted by the
ghosts of his dead comrades, who provide the novel's distinctive
narrative voice. The story deals with the seemingly contradictory and
morally ambiguous role of the soldier as both victimizer and victim.

Heinemann was born in 1944 in Chicago, Illinois. He
served a combat tour as a conscripted draftee in Vietnam from 1967 to
1968 with the 25 th Infantry Division. Besides short stories and
non-fiction, he wrote three novels, including “Close Quarters”, “Paco’s
Story” and “Cooler by the Lake”, and one memoir “Black Virgin Mountain”,
and three of these works are related to the Vietnam war.

Bruce Weigl was born in 1949 in Lorain, Ohio, and now teaches at Lorain County Community College.

In 1995, he adopted a Vietnamese girl, named Nguyen Thi Hanh, who
became the character of “The Circle of Hanh”, published in the US in
2000. Hanh translated this memoir into Vietnamese.

In “ The Circle of Hanh ”, Weigl writes, "The war took away my life and
gave me poetry in return...the fate the world has given me is to
struggle to write powerfully enough to draw others into the horror".

On the occasion, Weigl also launched his poetical memoir, “After the
Rain Stopped Pounding”, which has been translated into Vietnamese by
Nguyen Phan Que Mai and published by Youth Publishing House.

Both writers found truth, and recognised the futility and cruelty of
the war that they were involved in. Both of them were confronted by
their own war obsessions and created stories not only about actual truth
but also emotional truth./.

Youth football training, an upset refrain in Vietnam

Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) Nguyen Trong Hy mentioned youth training again, citing it as one of the targets of the nation in the future to brace up national football. Yet, the issue has actually been named long ago this decade.

Hy gave Tuoi Tre an interview on Wednesday.

Do you think that the early exit of Vietnam at this month’s Suzuki Cup is rooted from sloppy youth training?

That’s right. Youth training has long relied on state budget. It is rooted from the lack of legal binding in protecting lawful rights of individual investors for players’ transfer after their graduation.

Thus, it has discouraged individuals from investing in football training.

We are now focusing on building up such regulations to ensure fair achievements for individual investors in the field.

It seems that club owners now prefer buying talents to training youths for years

They do want to join in youth training but as I said their rights are not well observed now.

It requires great sum of money to build nearly perfect school as Aspire Academy in Qatar or Hoang Anh Gia Lai – Arsenal Football Academy in Vietnam’s Gia Lai Province.

Can you brief youth training in Vietnam during the past years?

If compared it to a tree, we can cover only the top of a tree by organizing tournaments for youth national teams to compete. This year, we set up 7 teams.

As for the root of a tree or daily professional training, clubs take care about it and get annually paid from the state budget.

Many provincial clubs have ignored youth training system. The Mekong Delta area with 12 provinces has only 3 youth teams.

Vietnam has 14 top-flight V-League clubs and 14 others playing at First Division but in total, we have only 17 youth teams competing at national youth leagues.

What should we do to change it?

In two or three years, the VFF will have sufficient fund -- from broadcasting copyrights and budget and we will re-establish a national U-19 league that all clubs at the top two leagues must send their young teams to partake.

V-League lures foreign players

HA NOI — The V-League national football championship, continues to be a lucrative market for foreign footballers, with over 200 players flocking for trials at V-League teams annually.

The premier league, which closed in June, saw 70 foreigners competing for 14 V-League teams with monthly salaries of between US$5,000 and $12,000.

Foreign footballers actually have made the V-League more competitive since the football governing body, VFF launched its first professional league in 2001 and allowed teams to offer contracts to foreign players.

For the new football season, which begins next month, the VFF has issued regulations restricting V-League teams to a maximum of four foreign players, three of whom will be allowed to play at any given time. However, despite the match-day restrictions, teams are proving happy enough to bolster their squads with players from Africa and South America.

The last two years has also seen a growth in teams offering contracts to naturalised foreign players who do not affect the foreign-player quota.

In effect this means that V-League teams will be permitted to play one foreign-born player from next year, in addition to three foreign passport holding players.

"The V-League still has great potential. Currently, at least 20 unofficial agents are plying their trade in Viet Nam," said American-Vietnamese Mae Mua, who was granted a FIFA Players' Agent License in 2006.

"Most of V-League teams are looking for forwards from African countries as they are quite cheap, and they're more powerful than local forwards, while good European players are expensive," Mua said, adding that a European striker in the 32-34 age bracket would require a minimum salary of US$500,000 each year.

Mua, who is still the only official FIFA-agent in Viet Nam, said her job has become tougher as teams have set higher standards for potential players.

The agent, who has worked in the Vietnamese League for over a decade as a former representative of the British sports marketing firm Strata, said Vietnamese coaches are often happy with African players.

Nigerian-born Olushola Aganun, who was recruited by Dong Thap FC with a salary of around $3,000 last year, recently signed for Hoa Phat Ha Noi after a successful season, where he netted 10 goals for Dong Thap.

A source said Olushola had signed for the Hanoian team for a salary of around $7,000 a month.

Anjembe Timothy, who also played for Dong Thap last year, also moved to Hoa Phat Ha Noi after a good season.

Ninh Binh team coach Nguyen Van Sy said teams with limited funds were keen on signing African players.

"We offer six-month or one-year contracts and decide to extend the deal if the player is a success in their first year. It's the best option for us as we avoid risk," Sy said.

"Most teams recruit foreign strikers rather than defenders and midfielders. It's a reason why foreign forwards have continuously won the award as the V-League's top scorer since 2003."

Last year, Hai Phong became the first V-League team to announce a mega-contract with Brazilian superstar Denilson de Oliveira. But the deal fell apart when the Brazilian left the team after receiving US$10,000 for three weeks in Viet Nam, plus $15,000 for his 50 minutes of play and a solitary goal.

Mua said that the V-League this year, which kicks off next month, continues to lure African footballers and naturalised Vietnamese players.

Last year, foreign-born players Huynh Keskey Alves, Phan Van Santos, Dinh Hoang Max (Maxwell) and Ukraine-born Dinh Hoang La (Mykola) were called up to train with the national squad ahead of the Asian Cup qualifiers, but all failed to make the final squads. — VNS

HA NOI — When he signed up as coach of Lam Son Thanh Hoa, Le Thuy Hai knew he would have difficulties.

However, after two months, he has come across more problems than he expected, but he is not complaining.

Several senior players have resigned to join other teams and many of the younger players need much improvement.

"Everyone can see our problem. Many senior players have gone, I have to work with juniors who are competing in their place – and continue to train more," Hai said.

"I realised their were difficulties when I signed the contract, but as a coach I accepted the challenge to make things perfect."

After the 2010 season ended, several of Thanh Hoa's qualified players, including national team member Le Phuoc Tu and midfielders Tran Anh Tuan and Khanh Lam, left to other clubs.

Meanwhile naturalised Vietnamese player Le Tostao and three other foreigners also said goodbye.

Their departure pushed Thanh Hoa to the brink. The problem could have become worse as some others also expressed a desire to quit. However, when Hai became coach, he persuaded them to stay.

He is known for his strong personality and is respected by players.

Under his management, Thanh Hoa have lured talented midfielder Trinh Phong Thu from Ha Noi ACB and Anh Tuan from Hai Phong.

Halfback Trong Hai has also returned home after two years playing for Ha Noi T&T.

"We still lack players, but I have just signed contracts with two foreign players – a striker and a midfielder. We are testing some newcomers and need one more forward and one defender," Hai said.

The 64-year-old who has won several titles with other clubs, now wants to succeed with a low-ranked team. This was major reason for him signing Thanh Hoa despite receiving many other offers.

"A coach is not so necessary with a highly qualified team. Earning success with these teams does not surprise anyone," said Hai.

"I like to conquer challenges, that is why I am here. Once I made my choice, I did not complain, because it would not solve the problems.

"People can evaluate me through my activities and the results," Hai added. — VNS

VFF to hold national meeting on Suzuki Cup loss

The Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) said it would convene a meeting next month with coaches and analysts to learn why Vietnam - the defending champion - was eliminated from the ongoing Suzuki Cup 2010.

It will be a chance to find out truths and draw out lessons after the Vietnamese national football team were eliminated at the semifinals, VFF’s chairman Nguyen Trong Hy told Tuoi Tre.

Domestic coaches Duong Ngoc Hung and Mai Duc Chung agreed with the idea.

“I think we should leave constructive comments rather than harsh criticism because the result is unchangeable,” Hung said. “From my point of view, Vietnam’s failure can be attributed to injuries and form.”

“We actually did not have really sharp and strong men to convert chance into goals.

“Coach Henrique Calisto had to use only one man playing as forward (Anh Duc) together with two others as wing-attacking midfielders as per our team’s offensive tactics.

“The formation brought triumph to Vietnam two years ago but this time our opponents are accustomed to it and have found effective ways to weaken it.”

Failure can be also attributed to the fact that Vietnam underestimated the true strength of their opponents’ counter-attack tactics, as evidenced in the 2-0 loss to the Philippines and the 2-0 defeat by Malaysia in the first-leg semifinal clash.

Coach Chung proposed players of the national team should train with their clubs instead of camping for three months in advance.

Chung also advised splitting long training periods into smaller time scales to help players have more time for families.

The other thing is Vietnam’s wrong strategy.

In the first-leg semis in Kuala Lumpur, Vietnam should have played defensively to gain at least one point and would later push for victory in the second leg, according to the coach.

“I do not mean totally defensive tactics, but obviously it is the only way our team should have performed since we did not have two skillful wing defenders Quang Thanh and Viet Cuong.

“Wing attacks became weaker and more monotonous as two wings-attacking midfielders got tired and did not receive necessary supports from two wing defenders.”

Coach Chung confirmed he would address the upcoming meeting about Vietnam’s line-up. Viet Thang, who has yet to completely recover from injury, was in the starting line-up while a healthy Quang Hai was on the bench.
