Chelsea expose gulf in class with Marseille

Premier League Chelsea exposed a gulf in class when they defeated French champions Olympique Marseille 2-0 at Stamford Bridge in the Champions League group stage on Tuesday.

Chelsea's superiority was so great in a one-sided Group F match, especially in the first half, that the match was over as a contest long before halftime even though they failed to add to John Terry's and Nicolas Anelka's goals scored inside the first 28 minutes.

Marseille manager Didier Deschamps, a former Chelsea favorite and an FA Cup winner with the Blues in 2000, marveled at Chelsea's performance afterwards, saying he believed they were one of the favorites to win this season's competition, despite a recent mini-slump domestically.

"We were dominated both physically and technically, there was a huge gulf in class between the two sides," Deschamps told reporters. "Chelsea had a very effective first half and we lacked a bit of aggression.”

“Although we did better in the second half, you have to say they could easily have scored a third.

"We came here full of ambition, and full of hope, and despite the fact they had some of their main players missing they were still full of internationals.”

He added, "We were vastly inferior in the first half at least and Chelsea remain one of the favorites to be champions of Europe. They were so solid and efficient."

Marseille could have done with the kind of industrious midfield graft that Deschamps was famous for in his pomp.

Instead, their midfield was overrun by Chelsea's with Michael Essien the dominant force, helping Chelsea to take a stranglehold on the game after Terry scored with a deft flick from a Gael Kakuta corner after seven minutes.

They effectively sealed the points when Anelka scored with a 28th-minute penalty.

Ancelotti delight

Underpinning every attack was an inspired Florent Malouda, who tormented the Marseille defense with his jinking runs and invention. French youngster Kakuta also terrorized his compatriots with a glittering performance on the other flank.

Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti, happy for his side to avoid a third successive defeat after losses to Newcastle United and Manchester City in the past week, was delighted.

"It was an important result after those two defeats, which we can now forget about," he told reporters.

"Now we have six points, we are top of the group and have a good chance of finishing first.”

Players keep the faith despite Roger-Rafa dominance

The Nadal-Federer era has seen slim pickings for the rest of men's tennis when it comes to Grand Slams but the chasing pack say the margins remain small as they battle to break the duopoly.

In an unprecedented streak, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer have won 25 of the past 30 majors -- setting a blistering pace that the rest of men's tennis has failed to match.

The Swiss maestro has won 16 Grand Slams, a record for the men's game, with Spain's world number one Nadal now on nine majors after a stellar year in which he won the French Open for the fifth time, plus Wimbledon and the US Open.

But as the season enters its final stretch with the race to qualify for the ATP World Tour Finals in London hotting up, the top men are trying to figure out ways to break the dominance.

"Everybody's trying to chase them as close as possible as we can," said world number seven Tomas Berdych, who shocked the tennis world when he dethroned six-time Wimbledon champion Federer in this year's quarter-finals.

The Czech player, who lost to Nadal in the final, insisted: "I think the gap is really small."

Berdych, speaking in Macau ahead of an exhibition tournament at the weekend, said despite the limited opportunities, he was grateful to be playing the game at the same time as two all-time greats.

"For me, it's a good time to be in this era that you can be competing against these two great players.

"Of course, you can see it from the other point of view that maybe if these two guys wouldn't be in the draw, in the tournament, then maybe it could be a bigger chance to win a Grand Slam."

Soderling, appearing alongside Berdych, Nikolay Davydenko and David Ferrer in Macau, has cause to rue the Rafa-Roger dominance, having been beaten in consecutive years by each player in the final of the French Open.

But the Swede, with a miserable 13-1 losing record against Federer, says men's tennis has strength in depth.

"In any tournament when Roger and Rafa are playing they will be the favourites but there's a lot of guys who can actually do well and compete and have a chance to win the bigger tournaments," he said.

"Maybe there's 10 or even 15 guys. The top is really, really tough. Anyone on a good day can beat anyone," added the world number five.

"You need to be ready for the first round. It's not easy but I wish it was a lot easier."

World number six Davydenko, who has a rare 5-4 winning record against Nadal, said men's tennis boasted great strength in depth, joking about his record against the Spaniard.

Spain's 11th-ranked Ferrer said: "I think now it's very difficult to win Grand Slams but I think it's a good time," also highlighting the threat posed by world number two Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray, ranked four.

Nadal, headlining this week's Thailand Open, became only the seventh man in history to achieve a career Grand Slam when he earned his first US Open title with victory over Djokovic in this month's final at Flushing Meadows.

But despite his phenomenal year, Soderling, top seed at this week's Malaysian Open, where his other three competitors in Macau are also playing, believes third-ranked Federer remains the yardstick.

"He's (Nadal) won so many Grand Slams already, so many titles but to me, Roger is still the best.

"But Rafa is still very young so if he's going to be healthy, he has a lot more years to play and he could definitely give it a shot.

"He has the chance to be known as the world's best player ever," added Soderling.

Photo exhibit features old time Hanoi

Architect Doan Bac will exhibit a collection of black-and- white photos
in celebration of Hanoi's millennium to give Hanoians and visitors a
glimpse of the city in the 1800s.

Bac has spent many
years collecting the photos from a variety of sources and categorising
them in chronological order. "Collecting the photos take a lot of time
and effort," he said.

His father, a retired history
teacher, has helped him with his work. Bac's father was born in Hanoi
, where he has spent his entire life in a small alley of Lo Duc
Street . With his deep knowledge of Hanoi , looking at the old
photos always brings back a lot of interesting memories.

"In the old days, the sounds of Hanoi included bells chiming as the
tram went by and food vendors hawking on the streets at night," he said.

The lifestyle in Hanoi is much different now. He
remembers when street vendors sold pho in narrow bowls from two
wooden-barrels.

"Women wore long dresses and puffed up their hair. Hanoians were simple but elegant," he said.

“All of my 1,820 black & white photos have been digitally restored to the best quality”, said Bac.

He is surprised at the huge number of photos he has collected from
enthusiastic Hanoi lovers. For example, he met Pierre Sadoul, the
grandson of Louis Sadoul, a French military doctor. Doctor Sadoul came
to Viet Nam in 1889, 1890 and 1903, and took photos of the city
during each visit.

Pierre Sadoul and his wife presented
Bac with 40 photos taken by the doctor featuring Thang Long Citadel, a
UNESCO world cultural heritage. These photos give viewers a panoramic
view of the citadel before it was destroyed, said Bac's father.

Another rare photo taken by Dr Sadoul is an image of the Statue of
Liberty on top of Turtle Tower in Sword Lake [taken in 1890
according to Louis Sadoul's diary]. Hanoi was home to a copy of the
statue from 1887 to 1945. Measuring 2.85m tall, the statue was erected
by the French colonial government after being sent from France for
an exhibition.

The collection will be displayed on
October 7 at the Hanoi Library. Pierre Sadoul is scheduled to attend the
event. With the theme Ky Uc Hanoi Xua (Memory of Old Hanoi), the
display will be divided into five parts featuring Hanoi from 1831 to
1954. After the display, Bac and his father plan to donate the
collection to the Hanoi Library and the Hanoi Museum ./.

Europe's football underdogs return to form

Unheralded Mainz top the table in Germany, Cesena have led Serie A, Saint-Etienne are back at the summit of the French first division and Barcelona were beaten, at home, by minnows Hercules.

Strange things are afoot in European football.

Over the early weeks of the season, in every major league on the continent, the big guns have struggled and the lesser lights have seized their chances.

Mainz beat reigning German champions Bayern Munich 2-1 on Saturday to record their sixth win in six league matches.

Their completely unexpected form has taken them to the top of the Bundesliga for the first time in their history, while Bayern are already 10 points off the pace in ninth.

"We don't feel bigger than we are," said Mainz coach Thomas Tuchel, whose charges are just one win short of the league record for consecutive wins at the start of a season.

Last season's German runners-up Schalke, meanwhile, opened the campaign with four straight defeats and sit second from bottom with a single win to their name.

An almost identical fate has befallen Roma, who are also in the relegation zone despite having finished second in the Italian top flight last term.

Lyon, second in France last season, are currently 18th with just one win from seven league games, while five-time European champions Liverpool are only three points off the bottom of England's Premier League.

For the teams bucking the trends in the early weeks of the 2010-11 campaign, the common denominators are belief, heart and good old-fashioned hard work.

"There's no particular secret to our game. We are playing with team spirit," said Cesena coach Massimo Ficcadenti, whose promoted side briefly topped the Italian standings after three matches.

"We are not looking at the table. We just want to stay up."

A similar refrain resounds in France, where 10-time champions Saint-Etienne have returned to the Ligue 1 summit for the first time since February 1982, despite having finished in 17th place for the past two seasons.

Les Verts forward Bakary Sako credits coach Christophe Galtier with the turnaround.

"Since his arrival, he's tried to create a team spirit," said Sako prior to his team's 1-0 win at neighbours Lyon on Saturday.

"He told us that, if we wanted to stay up, we'd only achieve it by collective effort."

The biggest shock of the season's early weeks was Barcelona's 2-0 loss at home to Hercules in their second league game.

It was the heaviest home defeat of Pep Guardiola's tenure and the Barcelona coach was full of praise for the La Liga newcomers, who are sitting snugly in mid-table after beating Sevilla 2-0 at the weekend.

"I congratulate Hercules," he said. "They came here and played well. They made it difficult for us and they got their reward."

Making life difficult, in the form of aggressive pressing, is increasingly the buzz tactic for unfancied teams taking on star-studded opposition.

Arsenal fell to a 3-2 defeat at home to promoted West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League on Saturday and victorious coach Roberto di Matteo credited a high-octane defensive effort for his side's unlikely triumph.

"We pressed them very high, in their half, all over the pitch," said the Italian. "We managed not to let them play their usual way."

It is a recurring theme. Mainz striker Adam Szalai said his side's "mission" against Bayern had been "to put the pressure on," while Cesena's 2-0 defeat of AC Milan earlier this month was described in the Italian press as a testament to the organization and work-rate of Ficcadenti's team.

Under-achieving heavyweights such as Bayern, Liverpool and Lyon seem to be paying the price for squads full of international players who have taken time to rediscover form and fitness after the rigors of the World Cup.

Teams like Mainz, Cesena, Saint-Etienne and Hercules, on the other hand, have been able to attack the campaign with a full pre-season behind them and a playing staff comprised of hungry, injury-free players.

The World Cup hangover theory can only be stretched so far, however.

Chelsea's players endured a disastrous tournament, with Nicolas Anelka sent home by France, Didier Drogba breaking his arm with Ivory Coast and Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole failing to impress once again for England.

And yet, prior to Saturday's defeat at Manchester City, the Premier League leaders had begun the campaign with five straight wins and an average of 4.2 goals scored per game.

Attributing the surprise results to the after-effects of the World Cup would also be doing a disservice to the industry, attitude and ambition of the 'little' teams who refuse to follow the script.

Officials await national awards

HA NOI — Vo Minh Tri and linesman Nguyen Ngoc Ha are favourites to win the Golden Whistle and Golden Flag awards this year following their outstanding performance in the V-League last season.

Both are among five short-listed candidates named by the National Referee Council on Sunday.

Tri, who won the Bronze Whistle last year, has no obvious rival as three-time winner Duong Van Hien has retired, Tran Khanh Hung retired at the end of this year, and FIFA-attested referee Dang Thanh Ha did not work this season due to injury.

Plaudits say Tri performed outstandingly this year, demonstrating judgement, skill, fitness and experience.

In recognition of Tri's ability, the Asian Football Confederation has called on his services at upcoming regional tournaments.

Meanwhile, the most likely contenders for the silver and bronze whistles are Vo Quang Vinh, Dao Van Cuong, Phung Dinh Dung and Nguyen Trong Thu. Thu, the youngest referee in contention, is in the running for the first time.

The Golden Flag is a more hotly contested affair. Although Hai Duong-based Ngoc Ha is the clear front runner, others in contention are Nguyen Phong Vu from Ha Tinh, followed by Chau Duc Thanh, Nguyen Hoang Minh and Nguyen Truong Xuan

One surprise contender is Xuan, who won the Bronze Flag in 2007 and Silver Flag in 2008. Xuan was absent from the short-list last year after a poor season.

Among the voters will be representatives from the Viet Nam Football Federation, sponsors, the referees council, professional referees, linesmen and journalists.

The winners will be announced in early next month. — VNS

VN expect tournament triumph

HCM CITY — Viet Nam are hopeful of winning an international under-23 football tournament that begins in HCM City today to commemorate Ha Noi's millennium.

"We have been training for three weeks [for] the 16th Asian Games in Guangzhou, China, next November," Nguyen Van Sy, assistant coach of the team, told a conference yesterday.

"Although this is an invitational tournament, it is very important for us in the build-up to the Asian Games. Moreover, we will try our best to win the trophy to celebrate the millennium of Ha Noi."

Iran will play Singapore in the opening game at 3.45pm today and it will be followed by the much-awaited match between Viet Nam and Malaysia, who edged Viet Nam in the 25th SEA Games final last December.

Viet Nam have eight players from that line-up which lost by one goal. Malaysia have made seven changes.

Viet Nam, with three players aged above 23, including striker Nguyen Anh Duc and goalkeeper Bui Tan Truong, like some of the other teams, are the better team on paper, but Sy rates Malaysia highly under the coach K. Rajagopal.

"We gathered only on September 21," Rajagopal said.

"Winning the SEA Games title was in the past and we are looking forward. We do not have any goals and will just go out there and play our best."

Iran, the only team from West Asia, are the youngest in the fray but have an advantage over the other teams in terms of height and physical strength.

"We have limited knowledge of the participating teams but the tournament will give us a good opportunity to acquaint ourselves with East Asian teams," Hamzeh Khosro, a member of the Iranian coaching staff, said.

"All the players are under 21. We will do our best and hope to have a good tournament."

Singapore have also made eight changes from the team that played at the SEA Games, including the drafting of two players aged above 23.

"Because the S-League is still in progress, we had some difficulty getting players," Singapore's assistant coach, Sundram Smoorthy, said.

"But we are happy to play good teams here and to see how our players perform."

The teams are allowed to field six substitutes in a match against the normal two.

The final will be played on October 2 at the Thong Nhat Stadium. The champions will walk away with a cash prize of US$20,000, the runner-up will get $10,000, and the third-placed team, $5,000. — VNS

North Korea draws with Vietnam to win Millennium Football Cup

HCMC – North Korea won the 1,000th Thang Long-Hanoi Football Cup 2010 after a goalless draw with hosts Vietnam during the tournament’s final match at My Dinh National Stadium in Hanoi on Friday, picking up US$20,000 in cash and a trophy.

A draw was enough for North Korea to win the round-robin tournament. Kuwait’s U23s had also tied goalless with Australia in an earlier game the same day.

To win the cup, Vietnam had to beat North Korea who had six points from the two opening games, while the hosts only had three points from one win and one loss.

The home side had beaten Kuwait U23 3-0 in the opener but lost 0-2 to Australia in the second game, while North Korea beat Australia 1-0 in the first game and did the same with Kuwait in the second game.

Vietnam, who began with a changed lineup after their loss to Australia, showed great determination to win the game.

Defender Nguyen Huy Hoang made his debut at the game, replacing defender Le Phuoc Tu from the beginning, midfielders Nguyen Minh Chau and Nguyen Vu Phong also played in the first minutes. Nguyen Trong Hoang came in for Nguyen Quang Hai in the middle.

Vietnam laid on the pressure in the opening minutes and dominated possession in the first half but were up against the strong defensive line that North Korea set up and some good saves by the North Korean goalie.

The visitors, who had six players that had attended the World Cup 2010 in South Africa in June, mounted pressure on the Vietnamese defenders in the last minutes of the first half and continuously dominated the attack in the second.

The Vietnamese players rallied to create some chances in the game’s closing minutes but the Korean side’s defense resiliently held out to keep a clean score sheet.

Korea won with seven points. Vietnam finished second with US$10,000 with four points from one win, one draw and one loss. The Australian side came third with three points and pocketed US$5,000 while the bottom-placed Kuwait got only one point.

The tournament was a test for Vietnam before the Southeast Asian championship - AFF Suzuki Cup 2010, co-hosted by Indonesia and Vietnam from December 1 to 29.

In related news, the Vietnamese Olympic football squad together with the Olympic teams from Iran, Malaysia and Singapore will complete at the International Football Tournament/ Eximbank 2010 Cup in HCMC this week.

The round-robin tournament will be held at Thong Nhat Stadium in HCMC from September 28 to October 2. It also celebrates the 1,000 anniversary of the capital city.

The Vietnamese Olympic football squad secured two wins over Cambodia in the friendly matches before taking part in the friendly tournament. The Vietnamese side beat Cambodian national squad 2-0 on September 18 and they also defeated the Cambodian squad 3-0 in three days later.

Vietnam’s coach Hoang Van Phuc was confident before taking on China in the final game as his team had won by one goal over China in the opener.

The Vietnamese placed pressure on the China defending lines from the start and they dominated the game in the first half but couldn’t convert.

The Vietnamese in the crowd waited till the 44th minute to celebrate, when Van Nam took a kick in the penalty box beating the Chinese goalie.

Coach Phuc made some strategic changes in the second half to play more defensively and rely on rare counter attacks.

Neither Vietnam nor China looked like scoring throughout the last half, despite some strong China attacks.

It was the third victory of the national U-16 football squad in the tournament. Vietnam had earned a 1-0 victory over China in the opener, 1-0 win over Indonesia in the second game and a 1-2 loss to East Timor in the third game.

The Vietnamese team included the best seven players from Danang U-17 team, the champions of the national U-17 football championship. The rest were from the 10 clubs around the country including Song Lam Nghe An, Hanoi T&T and Hoa Phat Hanoi.

HCM City plans to save old colonial French villas

HCM City is planning to conserve its French-era villas which are
being razed one by one to make way for high-rise buildings.

Most of them are in Districts 1 and 3, with a high concentration being on Tu Xuong and Le Quy Don streets.

The Department of Construction is drawing up a list of surviving
villas and will hire Japanese consultants to draft a master plan for
conserving while also using them as offices, schools, restaurants and
hotels.

Ly Khanh Tam Thao, deputy head of the
Department of Planning and Architecture's municipal area management
division, said: "They should be protected from the creep of urbanisation
and from being pulled down for their valuable land."

Only ornate buildings like the city hall and the HCM City Opera House would be used for their original purpose, he said.

"Owners of villas will be allowed to build other structures at the
back but they must be responsible for protecting their facade and
interior."

But since traffic could become a problem
on roads leading to them if they were used as offices, schools,
restaurants or hotels, traffic infrastructure in their vicinity must be
modified, said Nguyen Van Chinh, director of the Southern Institute of
Traffic and Communications.

"Operating public transport to these places is a good way to reduce the number of private vehicles," he added.

Luong Hien Chung of the HCM City University of Transport said,
however, the villas' large yards should be used as parking lots for
visitors' vehicles.

Thao said villa owners should be
charged heavily for services and the money would be used to improve
traffic infrastructure in the vicinity.

India races to ready Games Village in time

Workers painted walls and mopped rain water at the Commonwealth Games Village as India raced on Sunday to address complaints about dirty and unhygienic facilities one week before the start of the showpiece event.

The Games were supposed to enhance India's image as a rising power, but shoddy construction, dirty accommodation and security fears raised governance and accountability issues in Asia's third largest economy.

Several top athletes, including world champion sprinter Usain Bolt, pulled out, removing some of the shine from the event held every four years for former British colonies.

Two more Australian athletes, cyclist Travis Meyer and table tennis player Stephanie Sang, pulled out on Sunday. This comes a day after Britain's number one tennis player Elena Baltacha withdrew because of concerns about disease and hygiene.

On Sunday, Indian organizing committee officials met to review the work at the Games Village where masons plastered walls while workers dried out the basement of the Village which sits on the flooded plains of the Yamuna river.

"All finishing work is going on in full swing," said Dalbir Singh, mayor of the Games Village where the athletes will stay.

"It's a world class facility with some minor issues and work is going on to fix those problems."

Most of the 34 apartment blocs are gleaming and spacious and fitted with Italian marble. But much of what is good about the facility was overshadowed by athletes' complaints of dirtiness and unfinished work in some of the living quarters.

Snake, Tobacco spit

South Africa's High Commissioner to India, Harris Majeke, told reporters a snake had been found in the room of an athlete at the Games village.

"That was really a threat to the lives of our athletes," he said, complaining of filth in the living quarters. "When everything is done, then we will ask our teams to come."

The Times Now news channel said about 150 rooms meant for athletes were uninhabitable.

Indian boxer Akhil Kumar's bed caved in on Saturday. It was found the mattress had just been placed on the bed frame without any support underneath.

"Laborers have done a very bad job. They had spit 'paan' (chewing tobacco) on the walls, stains of which are almost unremovable," Lalit Bhanot, secretary general of the Games organizing committee, told Reuters.

"We are identifying rooms which are dirty and shutting them down. But we have adequate rooms so there is nothing to worry about."

India was awarded the Games in 2003 but did not begin proper preparations until two years ago. Michael Fennell, chief of the Commonwealth Games Federation, has said India's image has taken a beating.

Athletes from 20 countries have arrived so far, including Scotland and Canada, which had delayed its arrival until Sunday.

The English team, which had checked into hotels because their accommodation was not ready, moved some support staff into the Village on Sunday. The athletes will follow on Monday.

"Work is on track. About 600 flats will be handed over by tomorrow (Monday) and everything will be complete by Wednesday," Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit told reporters.

India had hoped to use the Games to display its growing global economic and political influence, rivaling neighbor China which put on a spectacular 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics.

Instead, they have become a major embarrassment for the world's largest democracy, where infrastructure projects have progressed slowly and are a drag on economic growth.

Desperate officials on Friday asked the Indian Army to build a temporary bridge to replace the US$1.1 million footbridge that collapsed last week. The bridge, providing access to the main Jawaharlal Nehru stadium, should be finished within five days.

The bridge collapse and a suspected militant attack on two foreign visitors threw the Games into crisis. An outbreak of dengue fever has only compounded worries.

Trezeguet helps Hercules beat Sevilla in Spanish league

Veteran French striker David Trezeguet scored twice as promoted Hercules took another big league scalp defeating Sevilla 2-0 on Sunday.

Hercules caused the sensation of the season when they beat champions Barcelona 2-0 a fortnight ago and followed that by downing Sevilla, regulars on the Champions League circuit and fourth last season.

It was a first league defeat of the season for Sevilla who lie sixth, five points off leaders Valencia with Hercules now just a point behind them.

A World Cup winner with France in 1998, Trezeguet struck a penalty on 21 minutes to put Hercules ahead and grabbed a second on 38 minutes after great work from Dutch midfielder Roysten Drenthe who is on loan from Madrid.

Trezeguet, 32, has now scored three times for Hercules having made a surprise free transfer move to the league newcomers after a decade with Italian giants Juventus.

The loss means more pressure for Sevilla coach Antonio Alvarez who saw his team crash out of the Champions League qualifier to Braga and lost 1-0 to Paris Saint Germain in their opening Europa League match.

"While I am in charge I will give the maximum 24 hours a day," said Alvarez.

"The team didn't lack commitment. Sometimes the desire is there but things don't turn out well."

Elsewhere Atletico Madrid moved above Sevilla and up to fourth with a 1-0 victory over Real Zaragoza at the Vincente Calderon.

Atletico had collected one point from the last six but got back to winning ways with Brazilian debutant Filipe Luis - a 12-million-euro signing from Deportivo La Coruna - setting up Diego Costa for the winning goal on 20 minutes.

Atletico sit three points behind pacesetters Valencia while Zaragoza have yet to win and prop up the table.

Earlier Espanyol maintained their 100 percent home record with a 1-0 victory over 10-man Osasuna at the Cornella El Prat Stadium to go sixth in the Spanish top-flight.

Osasuna had to play 69 minutes of the match with one man fewer after defender Manuel Lolo was sent off on 21 minutes for a second yellow card and Espanyol went in front three minutes later through Alvaro Vazquez.

Espanyol, beaten 3-0 at Real Madrid on Tuesday, could not extend their advantage but held on to make it three wins out of three and move sixth two points behind third-placed Real Madrid.

In other matches, Almeria won their first game of the season with a brace from Nigerian striker Kalu Uche ensuring a 2-0 win over 10-man Deportivo La Coruna 2-0 at the Riazor stadium.

Uche scored a quick-fire double, after four and 18 minutes, to put Almeria in control and Depor were reduced to ten men shortly before half-time when Argentine defender Diego Colotto was given a straight red card for hauling down compatriot Pablo Piatti.

Depor are yet to win this season and sit second from bottom of the table after scoring just two goals in their first five league matches.

In other matches, Real Mallorca defeated newcomers Real Sociedad 2-0 at home thanks to a brace from Fernando Cavenaghi.

Argentine striker Cavenaghi struck in the fifth and 62nd minute as Mallorca continued their unbeaten home record and have collected all seven of their points in front of their own fans.

Valencia are the new league leaders after defeating Sporting Gijon 2-0 on Saturday to make it 13 points from a possible 15 and lie a point ahead of second-placed Barcelona.

Barcelona triumphed 3-1 at 10-man Athletic Bilbao on Sunday to move above rivals Real Madrid who drew 0-0 with Levante on Sunday to fall to third two points behind leaders Valencia.

On Monday Villarreal can move a point behind Valencia if they can notch a fourth successive league victory at Malaga.

Messi seeks fitness as pretenders prowl

Lionel Messi is battling to be fit for Barcelona's trip to Rubin Kazan on Wednesday but if injury keeps him out a host of other forwards are waiting in the wings to borrow his crown as Champions League king.

The little magician, inspirational in Barca's 2009 triumph and run to the semi-finals last term, has missed two league games with ankle ligament damage but could return against a side who shocked Pep Guardiola's men last season with a win at the Nou Camp and a goalless draw in Russia.

Messi scored twice in the 5-1 home victory over Panathinaikos in Barca's first Group D game two weeks ago when former team mate Zlatan Ibrahimovic also bagged a brace for new club AC Milan.

Ibrahimovic, cast aside by Guardiola after failing to come out of Messi's shadow, netted a double in Milan's nervous 2-0 win over Auxerre in their Group G opener at the San Siro and has since scored twice in Serie A to warm up nicely for Tuesday's second match at Ajax Amsterdam.

"I've scored four goals so far, all of them were important. I don't know which one was the most beautiful, we should ask the fans," the Swede told reporters before giving an ominous warning for Europe's defenders.

"I'm still not fully fit, but I'll be at 100 percent soon. Like I said on my first day at Milan, I came here to win."

Another former Barcelona striker, Samuel Eto'o, is in excellent form for holders Inter Milan and was unlucky not to score again in Saturday's 1-0 defeat at AS Roma in Serie A.

A first Champions League home game as Inter boss awaits Rafael Benitez in Group A on Wednesday when Werder Bremen come to town hoping to exploit set pieces just like Twente Enschede did in their opening 2-2 draw with the treble winners.

Liveliest attacker

Diego Milito, who scored both goals in last May's final when Inter overran Bayern Munich, still has to fully rediscover his touch in front of goal but Benitez's lack of options mean the Argentine has to play practically every game.

Four-times winners Bayern, who visit FC Basel in Group E on Tuesday, are a long way from the form which took them to last season's final as underlined by Saturday's 2-1 home defeat by Mainz 05.

Creative wingers Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben are injured so the burden may again fall on World Cup Golden Boot winner Thomas Mueller, whose wonder goal set up a 2-0 win over AS Roma last time out in Europe.

While Mueller was wowing the crowds in South Africa, Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney were big disappointments and their club seasons have yet to really spark to life.

Ronaldo's Real Madrid were held to a 0-0 draw by promoted Levante on Saturday but the Portuguese was their liveliest attacker and will now try to unleash his frustration at Auxerre on Tuesday.

"Our tactics aren't the problem, but we aren't scoring," Real boss Jose Mourinho said. "It's not because of our players because we all know just how capable they are of scoring, but we aren't right now. That is my only worry."

The struggles of Manchester United's Rooney may also be troubling Alex Ferguson with another lacklustre display in a 2-2 draw at Bolton before Wednesday's Group C trip to Valencia.

Fellow English side Chelsea lost their first league game of the season on Saturday against Manchester City but should have an easier time at home to Marseille in Group F on Tuesday, with Didier Drogba keen to remind his old club of his strength.

Owen landmark rescues United at Bolton

Michael Owen's 200th career goal in England rescued Manchester United from defeat as Sir Alex Ferguson's side were held to a 2-2 draw by Bolton at the Reebok Stadium Sunday.

Martin Petrov's first goal in a Bolton shirt looked to have earned the hosts a famous victory before substitute Owen popped up with a 74th-minute equalizer.

United went into the game knowing that victory would take them to within a point of leaders Chelsea.

But it required a brilliant piece of individual skill from Nani to cancel out Zat Knight's early opener in what was an absorbing contest.

United were looking to take advantage of the unexpected defeats suffered by Chelsea and Arsenal the previous day yet found themselves behind as early as the sixth minute.

Bolton had lost 10 of their previous 11 meetings against United and were hammered 4-0 in the corresponding fixture last season.

Yet the team that had not won at home since the final day of last season made the early breakthrough when Knight, who had only scored three top flight goals in three years, got ahead of Johnny Evans to divert the ball over the line following a corner.

It was a disastrous start by Ferguson's team whose defending has come under the microscope after conceding seven times in their previous five league outings.

In what was a frantic start, United responded with efforts by Ryan Giggs and Darren Fletcher but neither could beat Jussi Jaaskelainen, the Finland keeper who was returning from a three-match suspension.

Bolton might have been tempted to sit on their lead but Owen Coyle's side poured forward, Edwin van der Sar smothering the danger after Kevin Davies got a flick that almost set up Johan Elmander.

United were clearly unsettled and it required a brilliant individual run by Nani for them to draw level midway through the first half.

The Portuguese winger picked up a loose ball inside his own half before embarking on a powerful run in which he motored past three players before beating Jaaskelainen with a low shot into the bottom corner of the net.

United ended the half strongly, Wayne Rooney flashing a powerful effort narrowly over the bar after creating space for himself on the edge of the area.

But Bolton were by no means overawed and it required a timely challenge by Fletcher to deny Elmander after the Swedish striker had burst through the visitors defence.

The frustration was beginning to show. Rooney, subdued by his usual standards, lasted just 16 minutes of the second half before he was replaced by Federico Macheda while a hamstring problem brought Giggs' afternoon to a premature end.

Dimitar Berbatov, six goals in his previous five league outings, forced a fine save from Jaaskelainen before Petrov's excellent 67th minute finish left home fans dreaming of a first win over United since 2007.

The Bulgarian produced a sweet finish after being teed up by Kevin Davies following great vision from Chung-Yong Lee.

But Bolton were unable to hang on to their lead and three minutes after replacing Fletcher, Owen equalized with a clever back header following Nani's free kick - a thrilling end to a great game.

Will Querrey have the answers at HCMC tourney?

Tuoi Tre spoke to Sam Querrey, a young American tennis player who is in Ho Chi Minh City for the Heineken Stars tournament starting October 1.

Many people think you are America’s next big talent. What is your reaction?

I still have many things to do. I am satisfied with my career development and what I have achieved up to now. I hope to challenge myself at the Heineken Stars 2010 and other tournaments in the next few months.

You hold the record of serving 10 continuous aces in a match. What is the secret behind your big serve?

My secret is to practice hard. I think what I’ve achieved up to now is the result of my hard work. But I will work harder to improve.

This has been your most successful year. You won four ATP titles. What are your goals for next year?

What is important to me is to constantly improve and try harder in every match. If I play well, the results will follow and my ranking will improve. Of course, like other tennis pros, I attach importance to the Grand Slam tournaments. The competitive atmosphere and confronting many world-class opponents makes you want to win. I aim to play well in Grand Slam tournaments. One of them is the US Open which is very exciting for me since it is played at home. Moreover, it is the tournament I can play best in because the courts there are fast.

Who do you think is the best player in the world? And who do you want to compete with?

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are of course two best players. It is great to play tennis at a time when I have a chance to compete with Federer and Nadal, probably the two best players of all time. Every time I play against someone in the world’s top 10 or 20, it is an extremely important match. As I said, the level of professional tournaments is very high and every match is a challenge.

Do you have anything to say to your Vietnamese fans?

I hope my Vietnamese fans will come and support me at the Heineken Stars 2010. This is the first time I’ve played tennis in Vietnam and it will be amazing if I can win this tournament.

Real Madrid find money can't buy you love or goals

MADRID - Jose Mourinho lamented Real Madrid's failure to put the ball in the net as his side were held to a humbling 0-0 draw at Levante in La Liga on Saturday.

The nine-times European champions dominated the match but, as has happened in recent games, they lacked fluidity in their play and appeared anxious when chances fell to the likes of Gonzalo Higuain, Angel Di Maria or Cristiano Ronaldo.

"We've had eight clear opportunities but we haven't scored," their newly-installed coach Mourinho, who has been on the back foot after Real's dour recent performances, told reporters.

"The only game where we created fewer was in San Sebastian (against Real Sociedad) and we scored twice.

An opening day draw was followed by three consecutive victories with only one goal conceded, but the Bernabeu faithful expect more and they grumbled and whistled at their side during the laboured 3-0 win over Espanyol in midweek.

"We've only conceded once in six matches. We've controlled all the games, haven't had tactical problems and have been defensively solid. We always want to win but if you don't score you don't win," added Mourinho defending their mixed start.

The match pitched the world's richest club by income against a side who only came out of financial administration on Thursday, two years after seeking protection from creditors.

Real spent about 80 million euros ($106.8 million) on players like Argentina's Di Maria and Germany's Mesut Ozil in the close season, on top of 250 million spent the previous year.

Levante strengthened their squad after winning promotion by landing fringe players from other La Liga sides on loan or with free transfers.

"Each side plays to their strengths. It's clear economic power and football power are different things but we were the only ones who tried to play," said Mourinho.

For Levante the result crowned a special week.

After three straight defeats, in which they conceded 10 goals, they collected their first points back in the top flight with a 1-0 win at Almeria in midweek.

They then secured their financial independence again.

"It proves money doesn't speak in football," Levante president Francisco Catalan told Spanish television.

"The board's principle aim was to take the club out of administration, and we have achieved that. Our next job is to secure our place in the top flight."

Man City halt Chelsea charge with Tevez winner

LONDON - Leaders Chelsea failed their first serious test of the Premier League season on Saturday when a Carlos Tevez goal gave Manchester City a 1-0 home win over the champions who were unstoppable in their opening five matches.

A day after City manager Roberto Mancini suggested Chelsea's title defense would be a cruise, his side begged to differ and clinched victory thanks to Tevez's 59th minute solo goal, his fourth in his last three matches against Chelsea.

Arsenal could not capitalize on defeat for their London rivals, however, as they surprisingly went down 3-2 at home to West Bromwich Albion despite two late goals from Samir Nasri.

Chelsea, who failed to score in the league for the first time since last December, are top with 15 points but Manchester United can cut the gap to a point if they beat Bolton Wanderers on Sunday. Arsenal and City have 11 with West Brom fifth on 10.

Everton slumped to the foot of the table after a 0-0 stalemate at Fulham while the gloom at Anfield deepened as Liverpool drew 2-2 at home to Sunderland. After the match fans staged a sit-down protest against the club's American owners.

West Ham United moved off the bottom with their first victory of the season, beating visiting London rivals Tottenham Hotspur 1-0. Blackpool lost 2-1 at home to Blackburn Rovers while Birmingham City versus Wigan Athletic ended scoreless.

Mancini's expensively assembled Manchester City side would have fallen 10 points adrift of Chelsea had they lost the lunchtime kickoff but the Italian won the tactical battle over compatriot Carlo Ancelotti who was critical of his players.

"We didn't play how we wanted," he told Sky Sports. "We weren't able to use our quality and were too complicated. City performed well in midfield and won a lot of tackles and they deserved to win."

Subdued Chelsea

That said, City offered precious little in attack during the first half but importantly succeeded in subduing a Chelsea strikeforce that had laid waste to defenses so far this season with 21 league goals in a rip-roaring five-match run.

Tevez was a peripheral figure as Chelsea looked the more likely side to break the deadlock but he provided one individual moment of real quality as the hour mark approached.

There seemed no danger when Yaya Toure received the ball in his own half and passed to Tevez but the Argentine was surprisingly allowed to run unimpeded towards the Chelsea goal.

He jinked to the right and lashed a shot through the legs of Ashley Cole and beyond Petr Cech's despairing dive.

Chelsea, for whom defender Branislav Ivanovic headed against the woodwork in the first half and Nicolas Anelka went close early in the second, never really looked like equalizing and it was puzzling when Didier Drogba was substituted by Ancelotti.

"It was tactical, I felt we didn't have enough pace in the attacking half," the Chelsea manager said.

Arsenal had not lost at home to West Brom for 27 years but found themselves 3-0 down as the visitors, who also missed a first-half penalty at 0-0, scored through Peter Odemwingie, Gonzalo Jara and former Gunners player Jerome Thomas.

All the goals came after the break with Nasri giving Arsenal hope of a late escape but West Brom held on for the win.

"We were poor and deserved to lose because we were not up for it, quality wise or concentration (wise)," Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger told Sky Sports. "Not one of the players was at his normal level. We made mistake after mistake defensively."

Inter look one dimensional again in defeat by Roma

ROME - The debate about whether treble winners Inter Milan should have reinforced their squad in the transfer window resurfaced on Saturday when the Italian and European champions succumbed to a 1-0 league defeat at AS Roma.

Mirko Vucinic's injury-time diving header gave Roma their first win of the league campaign and inflicted inconsistent Inter's first Serie A defeat after five games.

New coach Rafael Benitez inherited practically the same side Jose Mourinho led to success last term but the sale of Mario Balotelli and the recruitment of untried youngsters like Coutinho means strikers Samuel Eto'o, Diego Milito and Goran Pandev all play at the same time with little option for change.

"There's no lack of quality alternatives in attack. Players like Milito, Eto'o, Pandev and Coutinho aren't easy to find," Benitez told Sky television in a bid to defend his unit.

"I think we should have had more intensity at the end of the game, we shouldn't have let them cross. But the problem isn't the goal at the end, it's that we had 15 shots on goal and should have scored before."

Montenegro's Vucinic was overjoyed to end Roma's sticky patch at an excitable Stadio Olimpico and avenge August's Italian Super Cup defeat by Inter, who narrowly beat the capital side to the scudetto yet again last term.

"It's a goal that's worth so much to me and to the team," the substitute said. "The most important element tonight was the fans.

"We have won against a very good side. But we know we are a good team."
