Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports on August 31 signed a
cooperation agreement for this year.

Cambodian students for graduate and postgraduate courses, internship,

Quoc leads medal hopes at SEA table tennis tourney

Olympian Doan Kien Quoc and his team-mates Tran Tuan Quynh, Nguyen Nam
Hai and rising star Dinh Quang Linh will all compete in the All-Stars
Southeast Asian Table Tennis Championship starting on September 11 in
Hai Duong city.

Quoc, who qualified for the second round
at the Beijing Olympics, will lead the Vietnamese in a tough contest
against top tour athletes from Singapore and Thailand in the
men's singles.

Known for his left-hand smashes, the
31-year-old is hoping to be on top form in what could be the most
important game of the year.

"Quoc has always been a key
member for Vietnam . He has gained experience in world competitions.
But Tuan Quynh and Quang Linh have also won medals in regional
contests," said Vietnam Table Tennis Federation official Nguyen Duc
Long.

"The tournament, which is being held the first time,
is a crucial test for our players, who've lacked tough competition
throughout the year," Long added.

In the women's division,
the hosts will display their power with top-form sisters Mai Hoang My
Trang and Mai Xuan Hang and teenager Nguyen Thi Viet Linh.

Linh, 16, who won the U15 girls' singles in the Southeast Asia junior
championships in Thailand last year, begins her first competition at
a senior tourney.

As scheduled, athletes will compete in
the men's and women's eight group round-robin competition at Hai Duong's
2,000-seat Gymnasium.

The two top players from each group will qualify for the quarter-finals.

"We're ready to host the tournament. The gymnasium, which was built for
the Southeast Asian Games in 2003 and upgraded last year, will be an
ideal venue for the biggest table tennis event of the year," said
director of Hai Duong gymnasium Nguyen Van Thanh.

Vietnam will send a 24-member squad to compete in the two-day event, which the country will host for the first time.

Quynh was the first Vietnamese player to win the Southeast Asian Championship in 2002./.

Sports kept me out of trouble: Olympic champion

thach kim tuan
Vietnamese weightlifter Thach Kim Tuan
Photo: Tuoi Tre

2010 Youth Olympic Games weightlifting champion Thach Kim Tuan, 16, talked to Tuoi Tre last week about his humble beginnings and how the athletic career enabled him to help his family and stay off the streets.

Did you expect you were going to get a gold medal ahead of the games?

I thought I could clinch a bronze as, you know, Olympic Games always attract many strong opponents.

So, I was very surprised and extremely happy to win the gold [after conquering the men’s 56kg clean and jerk event with 256kg at the August 13-26 Youth Olympic Games].

Can you tell us about your life?

I dropped out of school when I was in the sixth grade and started training in weightlifting five years ago.

I was recruited in the national team and began earning a monthly salary of VND750,000 (US$39.5). I gave it all to my eldest sister to care for our family of four.

[Tuan was one of 4 brothers and sisters born in the central province of Binh Thuan into a family of very humble means. He lost his parents when he was 3 and the four moved to Ho Chi Minh City to work as street vendors.]

I’ve given weightlifting my best and I don’t regret leaving school early as I was able to help my brothers and sister.

In addition to the gold medal in Singapore, a gold and two silvers at the Junior Asia Championships in the United Arab Emirates and three silver medals at the Junior World Championships in Thailand last year, these competitions earned me a combined VND300 million ($15,800) in cash prizes.

I give my sister my entire current salary of VND11.25 million ($592) a month to save to buy a house in the city.

[The champion and three of his brothers and sisters are now living in a rented house].

What are your current goals?

I want to return to school and improve my academic skills to better comprehend sports lessons as I am planning to become a weightlifting coach later.

I also want more victories at higher tournaments in the world as the Asian Olympic Games and the World Olympic Games.

What lesson has life taught you?

I think I am lucky that sports kept me out of trouble. Many children with similar family circumstances have become street kids.

I have never gotten involved in any street-fight.

Clijsters and Roddick sail through at US Open

Andy Roddick of the US hits a return to Stephane Robert of France during the US Open tennis tournament in New York, August 30, 2010
Photo: Reuters

Kim Clijsters made a triumphant return to the US Open on Monday, capping her belated maiden appearance as a defending grand slam champion with a straight sets win over Hungarian Greta Arn.

Clijsters recovered from a brief lapse in concentration in the second set to win 6-0 7-5 at the start of a busy first day at Flushing Meadows featuring five former US Open winners.

American Andy Roddick, champion in 2003, celebrated his 28th birthday at Arthur Ashe Stadium with a 6-3 6-2 6-2 romp of France's Stephane Robert, clearing the way for Roger Federer and Venus Williams to take the spotlight in the night matches.

Clijsters was not at her best against Arn, going 4-0 behind in the second set, but managed to dig herself out of trouble as she finally walked on the Arthur Ashe Stadium court as the defending champion.

It had been a long time coming for the second seed but she said the wait was worth it.

"Just to come out there and defend my title... I've never been in that position," she said. "It couldn't have come any faster.”

“I wanted it to happen for a while, and I was just excited to go out there."

Clijsters won the title for the first time in 2005 but missed the next three years, initially through a wrist injury and then when she took time off to start a family, before her fairytale comeback last year to capture a second crown.

Roddick, returning to the game from an injury-sapping illness, looked a picture of health in a straight sets win over Robert as the last grand slam of the season began under brilliant blue skies and stifling summer heat.

"Conditions are a little tricky out there,” said Roddick, who fired just eight aces. “The wind blows a little out there.”

Few surprises

Five-time champion Federer and two-time winner Williams were scheduled to start their tournaments in the featured night session while Australia's Lleyton Hewitt, the 2001 champion, was booked to open his tourney inside the Louis Armstrong stadium.

The notable absentees from the list of former champions were the 2009 men's winner Juan Martin Del Potro, who withdrew because of a long-term injury, and Serena Williams, who withdrew after slicing her foot on broken glass in July.

The opening skirmishes produced few real surprises with Chile's Fernando Gonzalez, the 2007 Australian Open runner-up, the first seed to make an early exit. He retired from his match with Croatian qualifier Ivan Dodig because of a knee injury.

Sweden's two-time French Open finalist Robin Soderling was lucky not to lose to another qualifier before he regained his composure to beat Austria's Andreas Haider-Maurer 7-5 6-3 6-7 5-7 6-4.

Italy's reigning French Open winner Francesca Schiavone and Russian baseliner Nikolay Davydenko both made light work of their first round opponents.

Schiavone barely broke a sweat as she eased past Japan's Ayumi Morita 6-1 6-0 in under an hour while Davydenko, a two-time semifinalist in New York, was not tested in his 6-4 6-1 6-3 victory over American Michael Russell.

Unseeded American teenager Melanie Oudin also made a flying start after she opened proceedings on center court following her unexpected run to the quarterfinals last year.

Oudin has struggled to reach those dizzy heights this year, winning just one match at the year's three other grand slams, but the familiarity of the US Open hard courts brought out her best as she dumped Ukrainian qualifier Olga Savchuk 6-3 6-0.

"It's a real honor to get to start the US Open off on Ashe, first match," Oudin said. "I thought it was pretty cool, I didn't expect that."

Local broadcasters to stop airing EPL Sunday matches

HCMC - Local broadcasters, who have not hold the exclusive broadcasting rights of the English Premier League (EPL) in Vietnam, will stop airing EPL Sunday matches, Luu Vu Hai, chief of MoIC’s Radio, Television, and Electronic Information Department had concluded after its meeting with K+ channel and MP & Silva last week.

On behalf of the Ministry of Information and Communications (MoIC), Hai has certified that MP & Silva distributed the exclusive broadcasting rights to EPL Sunday matches in Vietnam for only VSTV, which owns K+ channel.

MP & Silva asked to meet with the MoIC to prove its exclusive broadcasting rights of EPL matches in Vietnam. In the meeting on August 26, the Ministry of Information and Communications confirmed that K+ channel holds the exclusive broadcasting rights to Sunday matches of the EPL in Vietnam.

The Ministry of Information and Communications will announce an official statement to local broadcasters as well as Thailand’s True Sport channel to stop airing EPL Sunday matches in Vietnam soon. Though True Sport is licensed in Vietnam, but they have to obey copyright rules. MoIC will ask local broadcasters to not take EPL Sunday matches from True Sport, Hai explained.

MP & Silva’s representative Beatrice Lee said that her company was satisfied with the meeting’s result and pleased with local state agencies in their intervention in the copyrights law violation. MP & Silva are glad if K+ reaches agreements to share Sunday matches with other broadcasters, she said.

Beatrice Lee said her company is willing to distribute these matches as well as Liga or Serie A with other channels in Vietnam, but K+ bought the exclusive rights to air these matches.

In Vietnam, MP & Silva distributed broadcasting rights of Saturday and Monday matches to several channels. However, the Hanoi Cable Television (HCTV) channel and some provincial channels still air live Sunday matches from Thailand’s True Sport channel.

HCTV stated it will stop airing Sunday matches once K+ and MP & Silva prove their exclusive rights in Vietnam or prevent True Sport from airing Sunday matches in Vietnam.

K+ won a contract for a three-year exclusive right to broadcast the world’s most popular football leagues. When K+ holds the exclusive right, Vietnamese audience, though having paid for other paid TV services, will have to pay more VND1.5 million for a decoder and monthly subscription fee of VND 250,000 to K+ to see these matches.

Vietnamese TV channels that broadcast the EPL: Saturday and Monday matches on Bong Da TV and The Thao TV (Vietnam Cable Television – VCTV), VTC-HD (VTC), HTV2 (HCMC Television), SCTV15 (Saigon Tourist Cable TV), K+ (VSTV) and H1 and H2 (Hanoi Television).

Season ends with Song Lam Nghe An National Cup win

HCMC –Song Lam Nghe An won the National Cup 2010 after defeating two-time V-League champions Hoang Anh Gia Lai 1-0 at HCMC’s Thong Nhat Stadium on Saturday.

Hoang Anh Gia Lai were still confident of a win even though the Central Highlands-based team started the game without left winger Le Van Truong, midfielder Nguyen Thai Duong and goalkeeper Shihavy. Brazilian strikers Evaldo Goncalves and Tiago De Paula, and Thai-born midfielders Nirut Surasiang and Sakda Joemdee, however, played from the kickoff.

Central-based Song Lam Nghe An, who won the cup twice in 2001 and 2002, were also confident with 2003 Golden Ball award winner Pham Van Quyen and national defender Nguyen Huy Hoang in their line-up.

Song Lam Nghe An strengthened their line-up earlier this year by signing Nigerian Abdulrazak Ekpoki and newly naturalized defender Helio, however, Bosnian Rajko Vidovic, who has scored 11 goals this season, was absent as he could not recover from his knee injury in time.

Both teams put pressure on in the first minutes, aiming to gain victory but the game got off to a wet start because of heavy rains. The player’s skills were affected by the rain and they did not control the ball.

With good ball possession, Song Lam Nghe An forwarders dominated the game and they nearly scored when striker Pham Van Quyen hit the post. Abdulrazak Ekpoki opened for Song Lam with a header in the 24th minute.

The second half was marred by heavy rain, Hoang Anh Gia Lai placed pressure on Song Lam’s defending line while Song Lam played defensively and relied on rare counter attacks to ensure their victory.

Despite strong attacks, Hoang Anh players created some scoring chances in the second half, but left the score at 1-0. Abdulrazak Ekpoki failed to score for Song Lam as his kick touched cross bar in the 82nd minute.

Hoang Anh Gia Lai beat SHB Danang 4-2 in a penalty shootout in the semifinal match while Song Lam Nghe An crushed Nam Dinh 3-0 in the second semifinal match in the National Cup 2010.

Song Lam Nghe An won the trophy and VND350 million (US$18,000). SHB Danang and Nam Dinh both ranked third.

Vietnam’s National Football Cup 2010 drew 26 teams including 14 teams from the country’s V-League and 12 teams from First Division.

The National Cup’s final marked the end of Vietnam’s 2009-2010 football season. The new season will begin in December with the Super Cup match when V-League champions Hanoi T&T will meet National Cup winners Song Lam Nghe An.

Zaccheroni becomes new Japan coach

Former AC Milan and Juventus manager Alberto Zaccheroni has been named as the new coach of Japan, the country's governing body announced on Monday.

The Japan Football Association (JFA) said the 57-year-old had reached an agreement to take charge of the Blue Samurai and would hold a news conference in Tokyo on Tuesday, bringing an end to a two-month search for a new national coach.

The identity of Japan's next coach had taken an intriguing twist earlier in the day when local media offered contrasting opinions on who was poised to take over.

According to Nikkan Sports, former Argentina manager Jose Pekerman was going to be named as coach later in the day.

However, the Daily Yomiuri, and Italy's La Repubblica, correctly reported that Zaccheroni had agreed to a two-year deal to succeed Takeshi Okada.

Dutchmen Marco van Basten and Ronald Koeman had also been linked with the Japan job while the delay in naming a coach had triggered criticism of the JFA.

Okada defied expectations by guiding Japan to the last 16 of this year's World Cup in South Africa, where they were beaten on penalties by Paraguay.

Zaccheroni is expected to take up his role after next month's home friendlies against Paraguay and Guatemala.

The Italian's first task is to lead the side at the Asian Cup in Qatar in January.

Tiger Woods finished strongly at the Barclays tournament on Sunday, a four-under 67 clinching a spot in the second FedExCup series event next week.

The world number one, yet to win this season, had to be in the top 50 to remain in the lucrative playoffs and qualified with ease as he closed with a seven-under 277 total.

"I'm very pleased," said Woods who felt his ball-striking was good all week. "If I had just putted well for all four days, I'm right there.”

“I drove it pretty much on a string all week and really controlled my irons," he told reporters.

"Unfortunately I didn't putt well in the middle two rounds."

Competing after his divorce from wife Elin became final on Monday, Woods tried to focus on swing adjustments.

He was satisfied for the most part and said he hoped to put it all together as he progressed through the FedExCup, which he won last year to pocket the US$10 million bonus as overall points leader.

After starting out in 112th place, with 100 players qualifying for next week's Deutsche Bank Championship in Boston, the American's display at Ridgewood Country Club put him back on track for the series.

"I'm looking forward to it, the next three events, the next three venues I've won on," he said looking ahead to the BMW Championship and the Tour Championship.

Federer and Clijsters to lead parade of champions

Roger Federer of Switzerland speaks during a media conference at the US Open tennis tournament August 28, 2010

Switzerland's Roger Federer and Belgian Kim Clijsters are among five former champions in action on a busy opening day at the US Open Monday.

The pair will be joined by Americans Venus Williams and Andy Roddick in playing their opening matches on the Arthur Ashe center court while another former champion, Australian Lleyton Hewitt, begins his campaign on the Louis Armstrong stadium.

Federer won the men's championship five times on the trot from 2004 to 2008 but will not start the event as the defending champion after his loss to Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro in last year's final.

Del Potro is absent this year because of injury but another Argentine, Brian Dabul, will be in the spotlight when he faces Federer in the first round.

“Maybe there is an extra incentive for me to try to win it again after being two points away last year,” Federer told reporters. "It was a disappointing loss for me, I felt like that was one of the finals I should never have lost.”

"At the end Del Potro played great and deserved the victory, it was a tough one to swallow."

With Del Potro away, Clijsters is the lone defending champion. She plays Hungarian Greta Arn first up.

Clijsters won in 2005 but did not get the chance to defend her title in 2006 because of injury. She missed the event in 2007 and 2008 after taking time out to start a family before a fairytale return last year.

"I'm so excited to be back to defend my title,” she said. “This is a first for me."

Roddick, who won his only grand slam title at New York in 2003, has been plagued by illness in recent months but the prospect of returning to the center court has given him a boost.

He plays Frenchman Stephane Robert in his first match which coincides with his 28th birthday.

"Birthday or no birthday, you come in to try to win one," he said.

"I don't think too much about age, numbers, whatever. I'll play till I can, until I feel like I shouldn't anymore."

Williams, who will fly the family flag after her sister Serena withdrew because of a foot injury, won the US Open in 2000 and 2001 and was runner-up in 1997 and 2002, has also been troubled by injuries but said she was fit and raring to go in her first match against Italian Roberta Vinci.

"Theoretically I've had more rest than everyone, I should be fresh," Williams said.

Hewitt, who won here in 2001, is one of two Australians in action at Louis Armstrong Stadium. He plays Paul-Henri Mathieu of France after Samantha Stosur, this year's runner-up at the French Open, faces Elena Vesnina.

Chelsea maintain perfect start, Arsenal win

Arsenal's Theo Walcott (R) challenges Blackpool's Stephen Crainey during their English Premier League soccer match at The Emirates Stadium in London August 21, 2010
Photo: Reuters

LONDON - Chelsea's goal-rush was staunched by Stoke City but the Premier League champions maintained their perfect start to the season with a 2-0 home victory on Saturday despite a missed penalty by Frank Lampard.

The England midfielder saw his spot kick saved by Thomas Sorensen but Florent Malouda fired Chelsea ahead just past the half hour mark and Didier Drogba tucked away a second-half penalty to seal a win that was much harder work than their 6-0 thrashings of West Bromwich Albion and Wigan Athletic.

Carlo Ancelotti's side top the table with a maximum nine points and a 14-0 goal difference while Arsenal moved to seven with an impressive 2-1 victory at Blackburn Rovers where Theo Walcott scored his fourth goal of the season.

The surprise result of the day came a White Hart Lane where Wigan Athletic hit back from two crushing defeats to beat Champions League qualifiers Tottenham Hotspur 1-0.

Hugo Rodallega's late goal decided a fixture that Tottenham won 9-1 last season.

Blackpool's first home match in the top flight since 1971 ended in a 2-2 draw with Fulham while Andy Carroll was on target again for promoted Newcastle United who drew 1-1 at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Manchester United can join Arsenal on seven points if they beat West Ham United in an early evening kickoff.

Chelsea have been unstoppable so far this season but Stoke proved a much tougher proposition than they did at the back end of last season when they were hammered 7-0 at Stamford Bridge.

Lampard wasted the chance to put the hosts in front when his poorly-struck penalty, awarded for a foul on Malouda by Ryan Shawcross, was saved by Sorensen.

Spared blushes

Malouda spared Lampard's blushes soon afterwards when he latched on to John Terry's pass to score but Stoke never looked like capitulating.

The visitors almost leveled when Matthew Etherington's shot was blocked on the line by Drogba and then Glenn Whelan's powerful shot struck the crossbar.

After 77 minutes Nicolas Anelka was brought down by Sorensen, and with Lampard having been substituted, Drogba made no mistake from the penalty spot.

Walcott's sparkling early-season form for Arsenal continued at Ewood Park and the England striker has already matched his goal tally for the whole of the last campaign which culminated with his exclusion from the World Cup squad.

He fired Arsenal ahead with a fine finish after 20 minutes and although Mame Diouf levelled for Rovers on his first Premier League start the Gunners sealed a deserved victory when Andrei Arshavin scored early in the second half.

The only blemish for manager Arsene Wenger was the sight of Dutch striker Robin van Persie limping off with a twisted ankle before halftime.

MADRID - Sevilla and Valencia recorded opening day wins in La Liga, helping dispel some of the doubts surrounding their abilities to challenge for honors this season.

Sevilla shook off a heavy defeat to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup and a shock reverse against Braga in the Champions League playoffs to beat promoted Levante 4-1 away.

A double strike from Abdoulay Konko, an Alvaro Negredo penalty and a last-minute goal from Renato helped cancel out a 10th-minute penalty from Levante's Ruben Suarez.

Two goals from Joaquin helped Valencia to a 3-1 win at Malaga as they started a new era without Spanish World Cup winning duo David Villa and David Silva.

Valencia had to sell their prize assets to Barcelona and Manchester City respectively to help finance their crippling debts over the summer, but new signing Aritz Aduriz opened his account in the ninth minute, and Joaquin struck late on.

In the day's other game, Spain striker Fernando Llorente headed the only goal as Athletic Bilbao won 1-0 at promoted Hercules.

Sevilla recovered quickly from conceding a penalty at Levante's Ciutat de Valencia stadium, leveling two minutes later when Jesus Navas's shot rebounded into the path of Konko.

Lucky penalty

They were lucky to win a penalty when Diego Perotti was brought down just outside the area in the 28th minute, and Negredo netted from the spot.

Konko finished off a well-worked move in the 62nd and Renato's diving header at the far post completed the scoring.

"This is very important. After everything bad that's gone on this was just what we needed," Negredo told Radio Marca.

Financially-troubled Valencia travelled to face a Malaga side who have just been bought by a member of the Qatari royal family.

Aduriz powered in a header from a corner but the hosts battled back and Uruguayan Sebastian Fernandez flicked in a nearpost free-kick in the 44th minute.

Joaquin broke the deadlock with a deflected shot in the 70th minute, and soon after he wrapped up the points with a volley from an Aduriz lay-off.

"We've only just started, there's still a long way to go but this was the most important step today. We wanted to win to build the confidence," Valencia coach Unai Emery told reporters.

Barcelona hit out at Ibrahimovic's agent

Barcelona Friday threatened to terminate the contract linking them with Mino Raiola, the agent of their striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, after he criticised club coach Pep Guardiola in the press.

"The executive committee of the FC Barcelona board of directors would like to publicly denounce the conduct over the last few days of the agent of our player Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Sr Mino Raiola, whose declarations have put into question the honour and moral integrity of our coach Josep Guardiola," read a statement on the Spanish champions' website.

"These declarations have affected the relationship between the coach and the player and as a result the willingness of the player to fulfil his obligations.

"As such the declarations are a flagrant breach of the contract which Sr Raiola's company have with the club for representation and management.

"Our legal department is therefore considering the possibility of rescinding this contract and the cessation of the annual payment Sr Raiola's company receives from the club as part of this agreement."

Barcelona were responding to an interview with Raiola that appeared in Friday's edition of the Marca sports daily, in which he described his client's position at the club as "surreal".

Ibrahimovic has four years to run on his contract but has seemingly fallen out of favour with Guardiola since the arrival of Spain international striker David Villa from Valencia earlier in the summer.

In an interview with Italian TV channel Sky Sport 24 on Wednesday, Ibrahimovic claimed he had only spoken to Guardiola twice in six months.

The tall, skilful Swedish forward joined Barca from Inter Milan last year and is in talks with AC Milan about a return to Italy.

Raiola told Sky Sport 24 earlier on Friday that Ibrahimovic's move to the seven-time European champions was close to completion.

"The baby is nearly born and we are in the eighth month of pregnancy," Raiola said after a meeting with Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani during a marathon three-day session of negotiations in Barcelona.

Ibrahimovic's move to Milan had looked an unlikely possibility a week ago, with Milan reportedly offering just six million euros and Barca holding out for EUR50 million (US$63.8 million).

The 28-year-old former Ajax and Juventus hitman arrived at then-European champions Barcelona from Inter last year for a reported fee of EUR69 million ($88 million) that included Samuel Eto'o moving in the opposite direction.

He made a strong start to life at Camp Nou, netting in his first four league games and scoring the winner against Barca's arch-rivals Real Madrid, but his form dipped later in the season and he was troubled by thigh and calf injuries.

Thang Long Imperial Citadel tells story of Hanoi

A host of treasures hidden underneath and left on the ground over 1,300
years has earned the core of the Thang Long Imperial Citadel UNESCO
recognition as a world cultural heritage site.

The site encompasses the No. 18 Hoang Dieu archaeological site and the
central axis of the Hanoi ancient citadel which are nestled in the
Forbidden Area in the heart of Thang Long Imperial Citadel.

The area was the centre of the Dai La citadel under the Chinese Tang domination (7 th -8 th century).

It
was called the Dai La citadel under the Dinh-Le dynasties (10 th
century), Thang Long, Dong Do, and Dong Kinh under the Ly dynasties
(1009-1226), the Tran dynasty (1226-1400), the Early Le dynasty
(1428-1527), the Mac dynasty (1527-1592), and Le Trung Hung (1593-1789)
before becoming the Hanoi citadel under the Nguyen dynasty (19 th
century).

At the No. 18 Hoang Dieu archaeological site,
scientists found imprints typical of the Ly, Tran and Le dynasties that
revealed much about the origin of Thang Long Imperial Citadel more than
1,300 years ago.

Lying adjacent to Kinh Thien Palace to
the west, the No. 18 Hoang Dieu archeological site is a component of the
Forbidden Area from the Ly dynasty to the end of the Le Trung Hung era.

Covering
a land area of 47,700 sq. m, the site is enclosed by Hoang Van Thu road
to the north, Bac Son road to the south, Hoang Dieu road to the east
and Doc Lap road to the west.

From December 2002 to March 2004,
archaeologists excavated numerous artefacts on 19,000 sq. m of the site,
exposing layers of cultures of different dynasties which reigned in
Vietnam and proving that Thang Long Imperial City played a
key role as a political centre throughout 1,300 years.

Architectural
vestiges of palaces, pavilions, and the foundations of architectural
structures of the Imperial Citadel have also been revealed.

At
the site, scientists found a cluster of architectural structures built
on land areas in rectangular and polygonal shapes, which were arranged
in line with a city’s standards.

They unearthed a great deal of
decorative objects placed on the roofing of architectural structures to
provide proof of the ancient Vietnamese people’s artistic skills in
constructing big and magnificent works.

Those decorative objects
included an earthen phoenix head dating from the 11 th -12 th century,
an earthen dragon head from the 12 th century, earthen tube roof tiles
with Bodhi tree leaf and dragon decoration dated from the 12 th
century.

Of them, with the majority made for the King, were
transparent ceramic bowls decorated with a five-toe dragon image dated
to the 15 th century, and decorative glazed terracotta pots made in the
10 th century.

At the 18 Hoang Dieu site, archaeologists
unearthed many precious ceramic and glazed terracotta items,
architectural materials, jewellery, weapons, and metal artefacts, of
which many were personal objects of the kings and the royal families.

They
also found a cannon weighing 100kg with a length of 1.2 m. It was
carved with the words, “Tu dai sung nhat hieu” (literally translated as
“The first cannon among four big cannons”).

A system of ancient
wells was exposed, including two believed to exist in the Dai La era,
two built under the Ly dynasty, two under the Tran dynasty, and six
under the Le dynasty. These wells have similar shape and size as those
found in the forbidden citadels in Japan , China and the Democratic
People’s Republic of Korea .

The No. 18 Hoang Dieu
archaeological site has supplied clear evidence of the site’s important
role throughout the nation’s history, at least nearly 1,000 years, from
1010 to 1789.

Situated to the east of the 18 Hoang Dieu
archaeological site is Hanoi ’s ancient citadel area - the remainder
of the central axis of the Vauban building.

The Vauban-styled
building was built in the heart of the old Thang Long Citadel by King
Gia Long in 1803. The building, with a perimeter of 4km, served as the
headquarters of the Bac Thanh and the stop-over palace for the King
during his visits to the north.

At present, there sit the
surrounding walls of the stop-over palace which were built under the
Nguyen dynasty in the 19 th century.

In the centre of the
ancient citadel lies the foundation of Kinh Thien palace which was
constructed under the Early Le dynasty (1428).

Other construction
works which still remain in the Hanoi ancient citadel were mostly
built from the 19 th century afterwards.

Walls and almost all
gates of the Hanoi ancient citadel were built by the Nguyen dynasty
in early 19 th century when Thang Long was the headquarters of the Bac
Thanh and the King’s stop-over palace.

Many buildings inside the citadel were constructed by the French colonists during the 1880’s after they occupied Hanoi .

There are also some important buildings built after 1954, which served as the headquarters of the Defence Ministry until 2004.

The most important existing remains of the Kinh Thien Palace
are its foundations and the stone steps with a handrail carved in the
shape of a dragon, called the dragon's entrance.

The foundations
are believed to have been built in 1428 and are seen as a Vietnamese
architectural masterpiece. The palace was situated at the centre of the
Imperial Citadel and the two dragons were carved from solid blocks of
stone during the Early Le dynasty in the late 16th and early 17th
centuries.

Doan Mon, the southern gate, was the main entrance to
Cam Thanh (the Forbidden Area). The gate was built by the Early Le
dynasty in the 15 th century and was later upgraded in the 19 th
century.

The U-shaped gate was built of brick and stones and
measured 46.5m by 26.5m by 6m and covers 3.970 m2. The Doan Mon Gate had
five domed doors. The largest one in the middle was for the King,
flanked by two smaller ones, one for mandarins and the other for members
of the royal family.

The Ky Dai, flag tower, was built in 1805, the same time as the Vauban-styled citadel.

It
was built on the former foundations of the Tam Mon, the outer gate of
the Forbidden Citadel during the Le dynasty. It is among the last
remaining intact structures from the Nguyen dynasty.

The tower, built in brick, has a square base with three storeys on top of it, each one progressively smaller.

It
is 33.4 m high and has a 54-step spiral staircase leading from the
bottom to the top of the tower where there is a 3.1 m-high observatory
with a rectangular doorway on each side and a 40cm diameter flagpole on
the top.

The Hau Lau, Princess Pavilion, was built in 1821,
but was destroyed at the end of the 19th century. The remaining
structure was rebuilt by the French.

Bac Mon, the
northern gate, was built in 1805 and is the only remaining out of the
five gates of Hanoi citadel from the Nguyen dynasty. It is designed
in the trapezium architectural style, with each side sloped at an angle
of 15 degrees. Above the gate is a two-storey observatory tower with a
curved roof and the traditional spearhead.

The external wall was
built in 1805 running from Doan Mon (southern gate) to surround the
internal palace, where the Nguyen Kings to work and rest when they
visited the north.

At present, the eight gates of the palace
still remain and were recognised as relics in 1925. Between 1954 and
2004, the Palace served as the headquarters of the High Command of the
Vietnam People's Army.

The French-styled buildings, the D57
bunker and the offices of the Party Central Committee’s Politburo, the
Central Military Committee, General Vo Nguyen Giap and the headquarters
of the General Staff of Vietnam People’s Army are now open for visitors.

Relics
from the Thang Long royal citadel have been recognised as a world
cultural heritage by UNESCO and have brought honour and pride to every
Vietnamese citizen as part of the nation’s cultural history./.

Argentine photographer honours warriors

On his second visit to Vietnam , Argentine photographer Jorge Monaco
sought to launch a project with Vietnamese veterans – something that has
haunted him for years.

Since the first time he set foot in Vietnam 13 years ago, he had
great respect for the brave country, with its tradition of fighting off
invaders and protecting its soil.

He came back to the
country to take photographs of the veterans, all from different military
ranks and different missions from different places, who contributed in
the successes of the resistances known throughout the nation. They are
all witnesses of the glorious history of Vietnam .

"The
idea to carry out the photo essay flashed in my mind from a previous
trip in 1997," he confessed. "It is an outstanding project for my
career, and I'm very satisfied with it."

The wars belong
to the past, but as time goes by, the veterans, all of them valuable
heritage to Vietnam and the world, will pass away. That's why he
wants to capture their images for the next generations.

"My intention was to produce this photo series as a tribute to all who
participated in the fight for the liberation of Vietnam , but with a
more humane approach," he added.

The images will tell much
more about the lives of the ex-combatants and Vietnamese customs
through the simple moments in their ordinary days, at home or at work.

Monaco photographed victims of Agent Orange, the toxic chemical used
by US troops during their war of aggression against Vietnam , which
still causes damage to the children and grandchildren of those soldiers.

This represents the first approach to the issue of
victims of Agent Orange, said Monaco , who has accumulated numerous
awards in national and international photo contests.

Monaco , who was born in Buenos Aires in 1957, won first place in
the national ranking of photography in the years from 1985-89.

He was part of a selection of 10 authors who represented Argentina in
the FIAP (International Federation for Photographic Artists) World Cup,
specialising in monochrome in 1989 in Belgium .

Also
in 1989 he was selected among the 27 best photographers in the world to
show their works in Germany to commemorate the 150th anniversary of
the invention of photography.

After his first trip to
Vietnam in 1999, he organised an exhibition entitled Vietnam – El
Gran Dragon Dorado ( Vietnam – The Great Golden Dragon), showcasing
his impressions of the country as a peaceful and friendly place.

It was the first photo exhibition on Vietnam in Argentina and also
the first exhibition to take place at the national parliament, the
Auditorium of the Chamber of Deputies, in Buenos Aires .

Monaco , who serves as Director of the National School of Photography
in Buenos Aires , plans to return to Vietnam to take more photos,
to enrich his collection and with the intention of publishing a book,
which, he said, would be a beautiful end to this artistic and
photographic research.

"This time Vietnam impressed me
once again thanks to its achievements in socio-economic development,"
he said. "I will come back because I still find inspiration in the
country."

Monaco has come home after a three-week trip
to Vietnam . He is preparing to display the fruits of his labour in
Argentina . All of the photos will be given captions and stories about
their characters to help visitors understand the Vietnamese soldiers.
The work is not easy and has taken up much of Monaco 's time. He says
the collection will be released on a special occasion.

The Vietnam News Agency Bureau in Argentina will follow up and bring news about the significant exposure./.
