High hopes for world champ berths

HA NOI – Vietnamese track and fields athletes have a chance to take part in the 13th World Athletics Championship in South Korea, according to standards just released by the International Association of Athletics Federation.

A and B standards are to be applied to participants. Vietnamese seeking opportunities are: women's 100m and 200m Vu Thi Huong, 800m and 1,500m Truong Thanh Hang, men's decathlon Vu Van Huyen.

Huong has to run 100m in 11.38sec and the 200m in 23.30 and Hang must run 800m in 2:01.30 and 1500 in 4:08.90, both to meet the B standard.

Huong last December broke the national record in the National Sport Games' 200m event with similar result to the standard while her seasonal best in the 100m was 11.34 at the 25th SEA Games' 100m in Laos in 2009.

Da Nang-based Hang has the chance run in both South Korea and England if she can maintain the times she ran at the 16th Asian Games in Gaungzhou last November.

Hang earned two silver medals in her two events with times of 2:00.91 and 4:08.22, respectively. Both are better than the B standard.

The runners' tasks now are to maintain their results.

The Vietnamese are also likely to qualify for the London Olympics next December because the standards applied for that even are lower than that of the world competition in South Korea.

Hang and Huong will receive intensive support this year. Huong will take part in a long-term training course in Germany while Hang will train in China or Bhutan.

They will return home ahead of the Asian Athletics Championship in Kobe, Japan, on July 7-10. If they qualify they will compete in the world championship from August 27 to September 4 in Daegu City.

Meanwhile, Iron man Huyen has to achieve 8,000 points to reach the B standard.

Real look to Mourinho magic to end Lyon jinx

Jose Mourinho ended Chelsea's half a century wait for an English title, he brought European Cup glory back to Inter Milan after 45 years and now he battles Olympique Lyon's mesmeric hold over mighty Real Madrid.

If there was ever a man to conquer a hoodoo it is the Portuguese coach but he has more than one jinx to deal with in Tuesday's Champions League last-16 first leg in France.

Lyon have beaten Real at home three times in a row in the competition including last year where they condemned the Spaniards to their sixth successive last 16 elimination.

Overcoming Claude Puel's team and the mental block of quarterfinal progress will be no mean feat but Mourinho, as ever, oozes the confidence that prompted the nine-times winners to appoint him last May.

"No one keeps me awake, neither Lyon nor anyone else," the outspoken Mourinho told reporters after Saturday's comfortable 2-0 La Liga win at home to Levante where he rested several players.

"The night I don't sleep well is after the match. Ever since we drew Lyon we have been following them. (Real consultant Zinedine) Zidane knows them and has been giving me information."

On a personal note, Mourinho is bidding to become the first coach to win the Champions League with three different clubs after stunning the European game with Porto's 2004 triumph and then taking just two seasons to mould a winning side at Inter.

May's victory in the final over Bayern Munich is still fresh in his memory but with the brilliance of Cristiano Ronaldo and pumped-up striker Karim Benzema returning to face his former team, Mourinho's prospects look as good as with Inter last year.

Bicycle kick

Lyon will not just have recent form against Real on their side at the Stade de Gerland.

Their domestic performances have shown a marked improvement of late with a 4-1 derby win at St Etienne and Friday's 4-0 home thumping of AS Nancy boding well.

"You can see that pressure makes us give the best of ourselves," Puel told reporters.

France playmaker Yoann Gourcuff, bought from Girondins Bordeaux in August as a marquee signing, has finally found his verve after a slow start and Jimmy Briand's bicycle kick goal against Nancy was on a par with Wayne Rooney's recent effort.

The only worries for Lyon are goalkeeper Hugo Lloris's bad cold, although he is expected to return against Real, and striker Lisandro Lopez's hamstring problem which is likely to keep the Argentine out of the game.

"Lisandro is slightly injured, his participation against Real is in doubt." added Puel, who has had a series of run-ins with the forward.

Probable teams:

Olympique Lyon: 1-Hugo Lloris; 13-Anthony Reveillere, 3-Cris, 5-Dejan Lovren, 20-Aly Cissokho; 6-Kim Kallstrom, 28-Jeremy Toulalan, 29-Yoann Gourcuff; 11-Michel Bastos, 18-Bafetimbi Gomis, 7-Jimmy Briand

Real Madrid: 1-Iker Casillas; 17-Alvaro Arbeloa, 2-Ricardo Carvalho, 3-Pepe, 4-Sergio Ramos; 14-Xabi Alonso, 24-Sami Khedira; 7-Cristiano Ronaldo, 23-Mesut Ozil, 22-Angel Di Maria; 9-Karim Benzema

Fagan Andre Diego scored the equalising goal 16 minutes into the second half before Kavin Eltroy Bryan netted a ball during the 85th minute.

Bayern brush off Mainz to go second

Defending champions Bayern Munich went second in the Bundesliga on Saturday night with a 3-1 win at Mainz, while league leaders Borussia Dortmund went 13-points clear with a 2-0 win over St Pauli.

Germany striker Mario Gomez, the league's top scorer, completed Bayern's rout with his 18th goal in 21 league games with a late strike after midfielders Bastian Schweinsteiger and Thomas Mueller had put Bayern ahead.

Mainz's Tunisia striker Sami Allagui scored a late consolation goal for the hosts, but Bayern warmed-up for Wednesday's Champions League last 16 game at holders Inter Milan with a win.

With Bayer Leverkusen playing relegation-threatened Stuttgart on Sunday, Bayern took their chance to go second, by virtue of a superior goal difference as play-makers Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery dominated Mainz.

"It was a fight, but we deserved the win," said Bayern's Mueller.

"With Franck and Arjen in the team, we play with a completely different quality."

Dortmund stay on course for their first league title since 2002 with a home win over Hamburg-based St Pauli after Paraguay forward Lucas Barrios netted for the tenth time this season six minutes before the half-time break.

He then made sure Dortmund took all three points with a 49th-minute shot that took a deflection off St Pauli defender Ralph Gunesch on the way into the net for an own goal.

"The team kept their concentration and were very disciplined," said Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp as his side picked up their first win of the month after drawing their previous two games.

"After talking about taking our chances, the team passed the test. We definitely earned the victory."

Leverkusen are still without ex-Germany captain Michael Ballack, who is expected to start on the bench after picking up a knee injury recently.

Hanover are fourth in the table after a 3-0 win over Kaiserslautern, with former Germany striker Jan Schlaudraff netting twice.

Hamburg coach Armin Veh left Dutch hot-shot Ruud van Nistelrooy on the bench for his side's 4-0 win over Werder Bremen on Saturday.

Van Nistelrooy has been unsettled in the Hanseatic city since former club Real Madrid tried to lure him back to Spain in January.

In the Dutchman's absence Peru striker Jose Guerrero netted twice, to leave Bremen just a point above the bottom three, while Hamburg are seventh.

Freiburg's Senegal striker Papiss Demba Cisse netted his 16th goal in 21 league games this season with a superb strike as he held off several defenders before stabbing the ball home on 70 minutes to seal a 2-1 win over Wolfsburg.

The defeat leaves Wolfsburg just a point above a relegation place as they lost again after sacking ex-England coach Steve McClaren a fortnight ago.

Cologne continue to pick up points and showed their fighting spirit with a 1-1 draw against Hoffenheim.

Nuremberg are up to eighth in the Bundesliga after their impressive 3-0 victory, their fourth straight win, against Eintracht Frankfurt on Friday night.

On Sunday, bottom side Borussia Moenchengladbach host Schalke 04, who drew 1-1 with Valencia in Spain in the last 16 of the Champions League in mid-week.

Fergie slams lacklustre United after Crawley test

Sir Alex Ferguson accused his Manchester United players of failing to understand the importance of the FA Cup after the 11-times winners struggled to reach the sixth round at the expense of non-League opposition.

The Premier League leaders were given an uncomfortable time by Crawley Town before edging past the team from the fifth tier of English football 1-0 at Old Trafford on Saturday to book a quarter-final spot.

But United's victory came at a cost as Anderson, Rafael da Silva and Fabio da Silva were injured and are now all doubtful for Wednesday's Champions League game away to Marseille.

Ferguson made his feelings clear after his players failed to perform.

Although the likes of Edwin van der Sar, Patrice Evra, Nemanja Vidic and Dimitar Berbatov were given the afternoon off, the likes of Bebe, Michael Carrick and Gabriel Obertan failed to impress.

"Some players came in and didn't do themselves justice. No doubt about that," said Ferguson.

"In the second half, we weren't at the races. It was disappointing. We might have some players who don't understand what the FA Cup is all about. That is the biggest lesson for them."

Anderson suffered a hamstring problem while brothers Rafael and Fabio da Silva also suffered knocks.

Ferguson said he will assess them before deciding whether they are capable of making the midweek journey to France.

"It was a big problem, having to take our two full-backs off and Anderson with his hamstring," added the United manager.

"It unbalances the team. We will assess them on Sunday. We had to play Darren Fletcher at right-back and he did well, but it didn't help."

Ferguson was full of praise for Crawley, who were denied a replay when substitute Richard Brodie hit the woodwork in stoppage time in front of their 9,000 travelling fans at Old Trafford.

"All the criticism about the FA Cup, it tells you what it means to a small club like Crawley," added Ferguson.

"They showed more desire in the second half. They made it very difficult for us. We were second to every ball. They could have equalized. They deserved a draw really, we never had a shot at goal in the second half.

"First half we did very well, no complaints. We could have been three or four up. It wasn't to be and if you are only 1-0 up in a cup-tie it only takes a second to lose a goal, and we nearly did."

Crawley did not leave Old Trafford completely empty handed. They will make over one million pounds (1.6 million dollars) from the tie via television rights and gate receipts from a sellout 75,000 crowd.

Manager Steve Evans challenged his players to use the performance as a springboard to win promotion to the Football League.

"We want to play in the Football League but there are some good clubs trying to stop us," said Evans.

"I am very proud of my players. I've spoken to Alex and he's given me a bottle of wine to take away."

V-League the No.1 in Southeast Asia: Indonesia coach

The top-tier football league in Vietnam, V-League, is the number one in Southeast Asia in terms of attraction and quality of competition, said Indonesia’s head coach Alfred Riedl.

The Austrian-born man, who has 14 years of working as coaches in Vietnam, Laos, and Indonesia, said footballers in Vietnam are paid higher salary and bonus than other nations in the region.

“It has drawn qualified players from Thailand, Singapore or Indonesia to enlist for V-League in Vietnam,” he said.

“Payment for domestic players in Vietnam is also higher than in Indonesia. That helps motivate players to strive to demonstrate themselves on the pitch to deserve the payment.”

The 62-year-old coach agreed that violence, match fixing and quality of referees have degraded football development but these problems are universal, not unique to Vietnam.

“In Indonesia, violence is even more serious than in Vietnam and referees seem unable to control it,” Riedl said.

Coach Riedl had three spells of training the Vietnamese national team, from 1998 – 2001, 2003-04, and 2005-07. He later came to Laos in 2009 and worked with Indonesia from 2010.

HA NOI — The women's football team would put aside its disappointment at not being able to defend its title at the Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia and focus on the FIFA Women's Olympic Football Tournament 2012 qualifying campaign next month, Chinese coach Chen Yun Fat said.

The Indonesian organising committee has announced that female football will not be played at the Southeast Asian Games this year.

Viet Nam Olympic Committee general secretary Hoang Vinh Giang said it would be difficult to change the committee's decision.

Chen said: "At present, the team are training their physical strength at Tam Dao Sports Centre in the northern province of Vinh Phuc where the weather is very severe. It rains all day and is very cold.

"We always define that we must try our best against any rival at any tournament."

Chen also revealed that six young talented footballers had been added to the team and that the FIFA qualifiers tournament would hone their skills and experience.

The Asian Zone qualifiers start in March having three phases until September to determine the two teams that will represent Asia.

Viet Nam is in group A of the draw, which comprises Thailand, Hong Kong, Chinese Taipei and Myanmar.

Group A and seven other teams from groups B and C – India, Uzbekistan, Bangladesh, Bahrain, Iran, Palestine and Jordan – will take part in the inaugural phase of qualification that kicks off on March 8 and winds up on March 27. — VNS
