Park Ji Sung to tour Vietnam for charity

South Korea football star Park Ji Sung is scheduled to participate in a charity football tournament held in Vietnam in June, the Chosun Ilbo news agency announced yesterday.

The charity program called the Asian Dream Cup will also draw participation of other well-known footballers like Lee Chung Yong of Bolton Wanderers, Ki Sung Yueng of Glasgow Celtics, Park's Manchester United teammate Patrice Evra of France, and retired Japanese star Hidetoshi Nakata.

South Korea’s former captain Park Ji Sung is moving on to the next stage in his career as the founder of a charitable JS Foundation.

"This will be a new starting point and the final destination in my football career," said Park, who retired from the national team last month. “I want to do something meaningful through football to share with the world."

Among the charity event's sponsors are notable sport figures like Choo Shin Soo of the Cleveland Indians, Olympic weightlifting champion Jang Mi Ran, and Hur Jae, head coach of KCC Egis in Korea’s professional basketball league, as well as entertainment celebrities including actor Jung Jun Ho and singer Kim Heung Gook.

"We want to promote football in Southeast Asia through various projects in cooperation with football associations there,” said Park, who is the foundation's executive director.

The paper also announced that Vietnam was chosen as the venue for the foundation's first project thanks to active support from the country's football association as well as the high popularity of Manchester United and Park there.

His father Park Sung Jong along with some members of the foundation paid a five-day visit to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City and worked with Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) last December.

“VFF has contacted JS Foundation and promised to create best conditions for the success of the upcoming charity football tournament,” said VFF’s General Secretary Tran Quoc Tuan.

“I do hope that Vietnamese spectators will have a chance to witness great performance by renowned footballers like Park Ji Sung.”

Meanwhile, Tran Dinh Huan, director of Thong Nhat Sports Center in HCMC, told Tuoi Tre that according to the JS foundation, Thong Nhat Stadium is less modern than Hanoi’s My Dinh National Stadium and its capacity is not as large as My Dinh’s.

However, “When we said that a large number of South Koreans live and work in HCMC, the foundation’s members find it a big advantage [to play in HCMC],” he added.

Spring festivals honour rice and heroes

A three-day festival commemorating mythical Vietnamese hero Saint Giong began in Hanoi on Feb. 8.

The
annual event at Soc Temple is one of several festivals in the north to
honour Saint Giong, a legendary hero who is said to have defeated an
army of foreign invaders.

Participants at the Soc Temple
festivities took part in offerings to the saint, the moc duc ceremony,
symbolising a cleansing process for the temple, and the bamboo
procession, which celebrates Saint Giong's martial arts skills with a
bamboo weapon used to defeat the invaders.

According to legend,
Saint Giong was only three years old when the country was invaded by
northern troops. When the infant Giong heard an official from the royal
court calling for skilled warriors to defend the motherland, he
magically grew in stature.

Last year, the Saint Giong festival
was recognised by UNESCO as an example of the world's intangible
heritage that should be preserved. It's one of several major festivals
across the country during the onset of spring.

In other festivals
across the north, people in Ha Nam province begin celebrating the Tich
dien (ploughing the rice field) festival on Feb. 9. The three-day
festival commemorates the day King Le Dai Hanh ploughed a field to
promote farming during the 10th century.

Tens of thousands of
visitors also converged on Dong Ky Village, Tu Son town in the northern
province of Bac Ninh, on Feb. 6 in the traditional firecracker festival.

Four
respected elders from each of the four hamlets in the village were
selected to perform rituals and pray for good weather, bumper crops and
prosperity.

The festival, which is organised on the fourth day of
the first lunar month and lasts for three days, honours General Thien
Cuong, who recruited young villagers to fire on the enemy and was later
considered the tutelary god of the village.

Hundreds of tourists
and local residents witnessed an annual traditional wrestling
competition held in the Thua Thien-Hue central province on Feb. 8.

Scores
of wrestlers from Thua Thien-Hue and Quang Tri provinces took part in
the event held in Thu Le village in Quang Dien district.

The Thu
Le Wrestling Festival, begun by local residents more than 100 years ago,
was revived recently after disappearing during the war.

The
event will be followed by other festivities like the Princess Huyen Tran
Festival in Huong Thuy district on February 11, the Sinh Village
Wrestling Competition in Quang Dien district on February 12, and the
Fish Praying Festival in Phu Vang district on February 14./.

Hoang Thien progresses at world junior tennis event

Vietnamese tennis player Nguyen Hoang Thien, 16, made encouraging performances at the 2011 Tennis Central 18 & U ITF Summer Championships in New Zealand after he defeated two rivals to clinch a spot to the 1/16 round.

The fifth seed Thien Tuesday won Bradley Mousley of Australia 6-3 6-1 in the second round. In the previous day, he had defeated host player Pratt Keerasuntonpong 6-3 6-3 in the opening round.

He is scheduled to take on the 12th seed of New Zealand Cameron Norrie in the third and 1/16 round today. The six-day tournament is slated to close on February 12 in Wellington.

Thien now ranks 241st according to the latest world ranking table released on Monday by the International Tennis Federation.

In a talk with Tuoi Tre on Tuesday, his father Nguyen Ngoc Minh said the achievement is resulted from strong investment by family during the last six years.

He said he sent his son to attend training courses in the US in 2005, just two years after he started training tennis at his age of eight.

Training and competition abroad has cost Thien permanent life far away from home and had never enjoyed New Year festival with family during the last six years.

Family spent almost US$2 million for him to train abroad in a bid to excel him to one of top-class player in the world, Minh said.

I want to play for Vietnam: Russian volleyballer

Playing a key post in the high-profile volleyball team Vietsovpetro of Vietnam, Russian-born player Merliakovax Ira now sets her sight on being included in the Vietnamese national team after she was naturalized in August, 2010.

The 27-year-old player told Tuoi Tre she has been working hard after holding Vietnamese citizenship so that she will be enlisted in the Vietnamese team for the 2011 Southeast Asian Games to be held in November in Indonesia.

Le Kim Nhung, her Vietnamese name, who is 1.85m tall and weighs 72kg, had a talk with Tuoi Tre.

What are your feelings of the Lunar New Year festival in Vietnam after spending 6 years working here?

In previous years, I usually joined my teammates to visit club’s coaches and spread them our wishes, and in return, we were given lucky money.

But during this 2011 Tet, I had to return to my homeland in Russia for some work.

Can you tell us something about your Vietnamese name Le Kim Nhung?

I think it’s better to have a pure Vietnamese name than combining both foreign and local names.

I consulted my friends and teammates in Vietnam and they all like it.

Can you give us a brief info of your family?

My father is a retired volleyball coach and my mom is a kindergarten’s music teacher. She also played volleyball as an amateur.

Before moving to Vietnam, I played for Dynamo Kiev in Russia.

You won the Best Attacker of the VTV Binh Dien Cup last month

I won that kind of title many times at many other tournaments during my six years in Vietnam. However, the latest one is the most meaningful to me as it marked the first title I won after being granted Vietnamese nationality.

What do you think about volleyball in Vietnam and in Southeast Asia?

To be frank, the development of Vietnamese volleyball is still amateur. What Vietnam need most now is to organize more events for local teams to compete and exchange.

In the region, Thailand is taking the lead and many Thai players are holding key positions at clubs here.

However, I wish the Vietnamese national volleyball team will beat Thailand at this year’s SEA Games. I also hope my Vietsovpetro club will gain best results at this year’s season.

Le Kim Nhung is qualified to be included in the national team to compete at the coming SEA Games, said Vietnam Volleyball Federation general secretary Tran Duc Phan.

In addition, she has never played for a Russian national team at any international tournament.

“We will soon discuss all aspects of the matter to admit her in our national squad,” said Phan.

“Vietnam will become stronger with her service.”
