HCMC – Defending champions Vietnam reached the semifinals at the ASEAN Football Federation Cup/AFF Suzuki Cup 2010, after defeating their archrivals Singapore 1-0 in their final game of the group stage at Hanoi’s My Dinh National Stadium on Wednesday while the Philippines qualified for the semifinals for the first time after drawing goalless with Myanmar at Thien Truong Stadium.

With only one goal from midfielder Nguyen Vu Phong in the 31st minute, Vietnam sent the three-time champions packing right in the group stage of the Southeast Asian championship.

Prior to the game, the Philippines and Singapore have four points each but the Philippines topped the standings of group B thanks to the goal difference. Third-placed Vietnam secured three points from one win and one loss while Myanmar exited from the tournament with two losses. But Vietnam now win the top place of the group.

The Vietnamese side needed a win to ensure their progress to the next round of the tournament while the Lions just needed a draw to keep their hope of reaching the next round alive.

Head coach Henrique Calisto said he believed Vietnam would beat Singapore in the make-or-break game. The Portuguese man said he was pleased with his players from their performance in the regional tournament even though local spectators had raised doubts about the team’s strength.

Part of Calisto’s confidence stems from the fact that Vietnam had held the three-time champions to a 1-1 draw in the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) Sonha Cup at the My Dinh Stadium earlier last month.

At the pre-match press conference, Singapore national coach Radojko Avramovic also expressed his strong winning determination on the threshold of the crucial clash between the two sides.

Vietnamese coach Henrique Calisto made some changes in their lineup with goalkeeper Bui Tan Truong, midfielder Nguyen Trong Hoang and defender Doan Viet Cuong coming in from the beginning. Meanwhile, midfielder Le Tan Tai did not even make the list due to an injury.

Backed by the enthusiastic support from about 40,000 spectators, Vietnam were on the attack from the start of the game in search for a goal and coach Calisto’s players dominated the ball possession in the first half while Singapore relied on rare counter attacks.

The home side missed a series of chances, the best in the first minutes when Nguyen Trong Hoang’s kick was saved by Singaporean goalkeeper Hassan Bin Abd Sunny from close range in minute five, midfielder Pham Thanh Luong’s kick over the goalpost in minute 13.

The Lions also created some scoring chances in the half but their players also lost all the chances.

The football-crazy local fans waited for 31 minutes into the game to celebrate the hosts’ scoring when Nguyen Vu Phong opened the score with superb kick after receiving the ball from midfielder Nguyen Thanh Luong in the penalty box.

After the break, the Lions increased their pressure in search for an equalizer. Singaporean forwards always troubled goalkeeper Bui Tan Truong and Vietnamese defenders.

Vietnamese players took on the defensive tactic and relied on counter attacks with an aim to protect the score. However, the Vietnamese forwarders also created some scoring chances and their defense resiliently held out to keep a clean sheet.

But difficulties came in the 63rd minute when midfielder Nguyen Trong Hoang was sent off with a second yellow card. Ever since, many scoring chances came for the visitors but the Singaporean players failed to convert any opportunities in the remaining time.

In the day’s other match, the Philippines and Myanmar shared the point after a goalless draw. The Philippines also qualified for the semi-finals as a Group B’s runners-up with five points.

Vietnam will meet Group A runners-up Malaysia in the semifinal first leg next Wednesday in Hanoi’s My Dinh Stadium and second leg next Saturday in Malaysia.

Group A leaders Indonesia will play Group B runners-up Philippines in the semifinal first leg next Thursday and second leg next Sunday on a home and away basis.

Vietnam inspires Japanese Katazome painter

Vietnam ’s development and the major changes taking place in the
country have been an endless inspiration for Japanese painter Toba Mika
who is well-known for her Katazome, or stencil dyed paintings.

Most of her work is of landscapes in Vietnam and over the past 16
years, she has created almost 100 paintings depicting the country, which
she has a special attachment to.

“When I think of
Vietnam, I become inspired, so when I see changes in the country I want
to bring it to life in my work,” the Professor at the Kyoto Seika
University of the Arts told the daily newspaper Thanh Nien (Young
People).

There are no people in Mika’s paintings,
but Mika said “I see the scenery’s soul and personality like human
beings. Some of the landscapes have existed for hundreds of years and
witnessed the lives and fates of many people. Every scene has its own
soul.”

Through Mika’s paintings, people can see
images of Vietnam development, from once having ancient streets with
old, moss covered houses and high-rise buildings to streets adorned
with advertising.

Toba Mika has visited almost
every region in Vietnam and she paints to record the scenery as well
as preserve Japan ’s traditional art of Katazome, which has existed
since the 12 th century.

Mika has recently been in
Vietnam to attend the exhibition “ Nara and Hanoi – connecting
eternal capital cities” which is showcasing her paintings of Hanoi .

Held at the Temple of Literature and the
Vietnam Fine Arts Museum from December 6-25, the exhibition aims
to celebrate the 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi and the 1,300
years of the ancient capital of Nara of Japan./.

HA NOI — Ten-man Viet Nam defeated Singapore 1-0 to go through to the semi-finals of the Southeast Asian Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup yesterday at Ha Noi's My Dinh Stadium.

Millions of Vietnamese flooded the streets of the city to celebrate the victory. If Viet Nam had drawn with Singapore, they would have failed to qualify for the next round and Singapore would have gone through instead.

Nguyen Vu Phong scored the only goal of the game with a gentle tap past goal keeper Hassan in the 32nd minute of the match. Phong's goal followed a three-pass combination started by midfielder Nguyen Trong Hoang and which took in diminutive Thanh Luong.

"My players have played very well in all of their matches, not only today's. Whenever they have had a chance to attack they attacked, and they also defended very well," said Viet Nam's manager Henrique Calisto.

"Today, Viet Nam created many chances and one was turned into a goal but we lost control of the game when Trong Hoang was sent off [in the 63rd minute]. That forced me to replace talented Thanh Luong with a defender and Viet Cuong was sidelined because of injury," Calisto said.

"I have to thank the fans for their great support, which was important to raising my players' spirits in a difficult situation," he added.

The Portuguese coach also praised left defender Cuong, who asked to continue playing despite being injured in the first half.

Most of Singapore's players dropped to the ground when the final whistle came, having missed out on several opportunities to level the match.

"My players tried their best but we were unlucky today. We had enough chances during the game and I am disappointed they did not get a goal," said Singapore's coach Radojko Avramovic.

"Meanwhile their failed corner kick was the start of the Vietnamese counter-attack, from which they scored."

The Serbian coach wished Viet Nam good luck at the end of the match, but criticised some of the refereeing.

"My goalkeeper was given a yellow card [for time wasting] when he was simply considering his options. Meanwhile, Vietnamese players who tried to waste time received nothing," he said.

Calisto meanwhile said Singapore's elimination from the tournament was a pity because they were a good team.

When asked about Malaysia, who Viet Nam will meet in the semis, Calisto would not be drawn, and said simply he wanted to savour the quarter-final victory.

The other semi-final will see the Philippines, who for the first time have qualified for the knock-out stages of the competition, will play Indonesia, who sent title favourites Thailand packing on Tuesday with a 2-0 victory at home.

The first leg of the semi-finals will take place on December 15-16. The second leg will be three days later.

Vietnamese players have been promised a bonus of VND7 billion (US$350,000) if they successfully defend their title. — VNS
