Viet Nam to host futsal tournament

Viet Nam will play Libya in their first game of the Ha Noi International Futsal (indoor football) tournament at the Quan Ngua Sports Centre on Friday.

Ahead of the match, Chinese Taipei will meet Qatar in the opening game of the two-day round robin tournament.

The hosts will play Taipei on Saturday before taking on Qatar in their last match on Sunday.

The winners will walk away with US$5,000, while the runners-up and third place will take $5,000 and $1,000 respectively.

Viet Nam have been training in HCM City for the tournament since September under Italian coach Sergio Gargelli.

"The tournament will be tough for us because Libya, Qatar and Taipei are strong. However, if we want to progress, we should play against strong teams. We would like to win the trophy," Gargelli told a press conference yesterday.

"Futsal is still a new sport in Viet Nam and it needs to be promoted," he added.

Viet Nam came third at the ASEAN Futsal Championships in April.

The country plans to host the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Futsal Championships in 2012.

Volleyballer to be VN's flag-bearer

Volleyball player Ngo Van Kieu will carry the flag for Viet Nam at the Asian Games in Guangzhou, China, next week.

The 1.94m Khanh Hoa native is the men's team's main spiker.

Viet Nam plan to send 260 athletes to Guangzhou to compete in 29 of 42 sports, and target at least five gold medals.

Their footballers became the first Vietnamese athletes to move into the athletes' village after the team arrived on Friday.

The Games open on Friday and the Vietnamese sports delegation organised a gala in the Military Theatre in Ha Noi last night to encourage the athletes headed for China.

Thang's injury adds to football team's woes

Nguyen Viet Thang's injury has added to the football team's woes ahead of the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) championship next month where they will be the defending champions.

Thang is the team's main striker in the absence of the Le Cong Vinh and Calisto's reluctance to trust Nguyen Quang Hai and Le Sy Manh.

According to the national team doctor, Nguyen Trong Hien, Thang's ligament injury following a collision with a Singapore player in the match in Ha Noi last Thursday is quite serious.

"Thang will have to take complete rest and it will take him at least one month to recover," he said.

Thang's participation in the AFF champs is still in the balance. — VNS

North Korea beat Vietnam 2-0, taking Sonha Cup

HCMC – North Korea won the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) Sonha Cup after beating hosts Vietnam 2-0 at My Dinh National Stadium in Hanoi on Saturday.

Singapore secured second place defeating South Korea’s U23 2-0 in an earlier game on the same day in the round robin tournament.

Vietnam wanted to keep cup at home, needing to win by an almost impossible three goals in the game. The hosts, with only one point from the two opening games, needed that decisive win, but North Korea that had four points from their previous win and draw only needed to stay within two points of the hosts for victory.

The home side had suffered a 0-2 loss to South Korea U23 in the opener and tied 1-1 with Singapore in the second game, while North Korea earned a 2-1 win over Singapore in the first game and tied 1-1 with South Korea U23 in the second game.

The North Korean team participated in the friendly tournament with their strongest squad. North Korea were considered hot favourites with six of their best players, who attended the World Cup 2010 in South Africa in June, in their lineup.

Though Vietnam started the game without striker Nguyen Viet Thang, midfielder Pham Thanh Luong and midfielder Nguyen Trong Hoang, the Vietnamese side were confident as they had the home ground advantage.

Starting quickly, Vietnam began the first half with more attacks and stronger pressure but their forwards missed the net.

The visitors started the game slowly managing a few chances but the first half ended goalless.

The Vietnamese players dominated the ball possession in the first minutes of the second half but North Korea surprised in the 55th when Myong Cha Hyon netted for his team with a header after receiving the ball from Ri Pyong Chol in the left wing.

Their joy was doubled just 10 minutes later when Rin Jin Hyok beat the Vietnamese keeper Duong Hong Son with an unstoppable kick after a great cross from teammate Kang Kuk Chol, who beat the defenders’ offside trap.

Despite strong attacks in the last minutes, the Vietnamese were left frustrated by the defense without a point.

North Korea finished the four-day, four-team round-robin tournament in top spot with seven points. Singapore and South Korea U23 both ended on four points with Singaporean securing second spot on goal difference. The host team came fourth.

The North Koreans won a cash prize of US$20,000 ,while Singapore and South Korea U23collected US$10,000 and US$5,000 respectively.

German contemporary arts introduced to Vietnam

Workshops, film screenings, contemporary art performances and concerts
in Hanoi, Hue and Ho Chi Minh City from Nov. 8-Dec. 10 will make
Open Academy 2010 different from other German art exchange programmes in
Vietnam.

At a press briefing on Nov. 8 in Hanoi, German artist Veronika
Radulovic, who has a strong attachment to Vietnam, said the project will
gather 10 key German artists who have developed major initiatives in
the contemporary arts and have close relations with Vietnamese
contemporary artists.

Sound, light and stage and space installation and arrangement will be hot topics at workshops, she said.

The
project, jointly held by Goethe Institute in Hanoi and Vietnamese
colleges and art centres, will also benefit the public, media artist
Maria Vedder said.

The German partner may soon repeat
the project by creating favourable conditions for Vietnamese artists to
perform in Germany.

Open Academy 2010, funded by the
state of Berlin, is part of “Year of Germany in Vietnam 2010”, which
marks the 35 th anniversary of Vietnam-Germany diplomatic ties./.

Viet Nam depart for 16th Asian Games

HA NOI — Vietnamese athletes were told to give it their all and act as ambassadors for the nation at the 16th Asian Games (ASIAD) which will start in China's Guangzhou this week.

Speaking at the send-off ceremony at Ha Noi's Military Theatre yesterday, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan said, "ASIAD is the biggest sporting event in the continent this year. It is will be a tough competition with many powerful rivals but I hope our athletes will try their best in the spirit of the Games. You must follow the rules and regulations, and always respect the referees' decisions."

The deputy PM confirmed that despite many difficulties, the Vietnamese Government had paid special attention to sport which was considered an important sector that promoted the development of the country and highlighted the position of Viet Nam on the world stage.

"I believe that each of the Vietnamese participants will be a cultural ambassador and represent the beauty of the people and nation of Viet Nam.

"I hope our athletes will successfully complete their duties and bring home glory," Nhan said.

Deputy head of the National Sports Administration Le Quy Phuong, who is leading Viet Nam's delegation to Guangzhou, also reminded the team of their task.

"We have made good preparations for ASIAD and we're ready to leave for the Games. We will do our best to win at least four gold medals and finish in the top 20.

"The encouragement from state leaders and the public today will drive us on to ASIAD success."

On behalf of all participants, sprinter Vu Thi Huong, who is the women's 100m Southeast Asian Games champion, swore an oath that Vietnamese athletes would try their best to succeed in the spirit of friendliness and fair play.

Two hundred and sixty Vietnamese athletes will participate at the Games in 27 sports. Most of the team will depart for Guangzhou on Thursday while the others will join them later.
Viet Nam are hopeful of gold in the sepak takraw and karate, in which the Vietnamese women and Vu Thi Nguyet Anh are defending champions.

Chess makes its debut this year and Vietnamese masters have made their mark on the world stage with remarkable success in recent years.
More success is expected in track and field, shooting, billiards and snooker.

At the previous Games in Qatar, Viet Nam grabbed three gold, 13 silver and seven bronze medals, ranking 19th out of 38 delegations. Their best performance came eight year ago in Busan, South Korea, where they earned four gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals, which helped them to reach 15th out of 43 teams.

The 16th Asian Games' opening ceremony will be on Friday and the Games will close on November 27. — VNS

Vietnamese athletes set off for Asiad 16

Vietnam’s athlete delegation to the 16th Asian Games (Asiad 16) organised a departure ceremony in Hanoi on Nov. 7.

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan attended the event,
encouraging the athletes to achieve good results at Asiad 16, scheduled
to take place in China ’s Guangxi province from Nov. 12-27.

Le Quy Phuong, Deputy General Director of the General Sports
Department and Head of the delegation, said Asiad 16 will be a big
challenge to the Vietnamese athletes.

However, they
are now ready to compete and expected to bring home from 4-6 gold
medals, helping the nation to rank in Top 15 at Asiad 16, Phuong added.

Vietnam is sending a 392-member delegation to
the games, including 260 athletes – the largest number so far – who will
compete in 29 sport and sub-sports events.

Experts
said Vietnam pins high hopes on its strong sports such as sepak
takraw, shooting, wushu, karate and chess, but it is likely to make
surprises in Olympics sports, namely track and field, swimming,
taekwondo and weightlifting./.
