Vietnamese culture delights German audiences

A colourful programme introducing Vietnamese culture was held on October
3 during a multi-cultural week in Leipzig, Germany.

The city’s Vietnamese community brought colourful folk dances and
songs to the festival, with the women wearing Vietnam’s traditional
long dress, the ao dai. The performance, which was opened by the mayor
of Leipzig, Andreas Muller, received a warm response from the
audience.

Pham Van Toan, First Secretary of the
Vietnamese Embassy in Germany, underlined the significance of the
event, which took place as both countries celebrate the 35th
anniversary of diplomatic ties.

He said it has helped
to portray Vietnam’s culture and its people to the German people,
preserve and promote the national cultural identity of the Vietnamese
community in Germany and strengthen solidarity and understanding
between Vietnamese and foreigners.

Earlier, the
Vietnamese community in Leipzig had worked with the local
authorities to put an exhibition of photos taken by Vietnamese and
German photographers, from September 20-Oct. 2./.

Italy give nod to the past for N.Ireland test

Italy coach Cesare Prandelli's bid to revolutionize his squad has been hit by a dearth of emerging young players and he may be forced to start veteran Gianluca Zambrotta in Friday's Euro 2012 qualifier in Northern Ireland.

The AC Milan fullback, a 33-year-old with 97 caps, played in their World Cup debacle in June and had been overlooked by new coach Prandelli until injuries let him back in for the trip to Belfast (1845 GMT) and Tuesday's home game with Serbia.

"Zambrotta is physically very fit, he can play on the right or the left," Prandelli, whose side top Group C with six points from six, told reporters. "At the moment there aren't any interesting young players so instead of calling up someone of 28 or 30 it makes more sense to pick someone with great experience.”

"I don't see any really young players who are good enough to be here right now.

“I hope in five or six months the Serie A championship will present me with some."

Italy's group stage exit in South Africa as holders led to much soul-searching and prompted the soccer federation to appoint former great Roberto Baggio as technical director and put Arrigo Sacchi in charge of the youth system.

Hands tied

Their reforms will take time given that Serie A teams rarely promote players under 25 into their first team, meaning Prandelli has his hands tied for now.

Fit-again left back Domenico Criscito is back despite a poor World Cup while Prandelli has broken his own "28 or 30" rule by recalling 30-year-old Lazio midfielder Stefano Mauri and naming 28-year-old team mate Sergio Floccari for the first time.

Prandelli is also handicapped for the awkward trip to Windsor Park by the absence of injured Mario Balotelli, so he may have to shift to a diamond midfield and two upfront despite preferring three forwards.

Antonio Cassano, inspirational in the wins over Estonia and Faroe Islands, could play at the head of the diamond behind two strikers or as a wide forward with Simone Pepe or Giuseppe Rossi on the other flank.

With Juventus strikers Vincenzo Iaquinta and Fabio Quagliarella dropped and Alberto Gilardino injured, Giampaolo Pazzini looks poised to play as the main striker.

The goalkeeper's spot is wide open with captain Gianluigi Buffon injured but Bologna's Emiliano Viviano looks a favorite.

Northern Ireland, who surprisingly won in Slovenia, have Celtic's Niall McGinn and Pat McCourt back although the latter has a shoulder problem.

Third-choice goalkeeper Alan Blayney of Linfield is the only Irish league player called up with Manchester United defender Jonny Evans their best known figure.

Probable teams:

Northern Ireland: Maik Taylor; Gareth McAuley, Jonny Evans, Aaron Hughes, Chris Baird; Steven Davis, Grant McCann, Corry Evans, Chris Brunt; David Healy, Kyle Lafferty

Italy: Emiliano Viviano; Mattia Cassani, Leonardo Bonucci, Giorgio Chiellini, Gianluca Zambrotta; Andrea Pirlo, Daniele De Rossi, Claudio Marchisio; Giuseppe Rossi, Giampaolo Pazzini, Antonio Cassano

Vietnam eager to face Japan

Vietnam and tournament-favorite Japan are eager to meet one another at the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U-19 Championships in China after both of them secured victories in the opening match day on Monday.

Vietnam, who overturned the initial score to defeat Jordan 2-1, will stage a low formation to counter-attack Japan -- who advanced six times to the regional U-19 tournaments, said Vietnamese coach Trieu Quang Ha.

“I watched the tape of Japan winning against the United Arab Emirates 2-1 and realized that they are strong with swift attacks along the two wings”, he said.

Vietnam can play a leveled game with Japan (to start at 7:30 GMT Wednesday), he added.

Vietnam will switch from 4-4-2 to 3-5-1 formation while facing Japan, with two central defenders Anh Quang and Tien Duy, according to the coach. Three midfielders Hoang Thinh, Huu Dinh and Hai Huy will cover the middle area to make up a second defensive wall.

Ha is also confident that his U-19 players have good athletic form and height to compete against the rivals.

The Vietnamese U-19 team is one of 16 out of 38 Asian national teams to pass the qualifying round in November of last year.

The Asian U-19 event is held every two years.

Stars to Heineken Tennis contest changed

Three of the four world-famous participants in the third Heineken Stars contest in Ho Chi Minh City on Friday and Saturday have withdrawn due to injury.

The organizers said, on Monday, that they would be replaced with players at higher rankings in the world.

Only the 21st-ranked American player Sam Querrey remains unchanged. The other three stars 29th-ranked Argentine David Nalbandian, 113th-ranked American Robby Ginepri and 251st-ranked German Tommy Haas will not come.

The organizers have filled the vacancies with the 19th-ranked American Mardi Fish, 42nd-ranked Spaniard Tommy Robredo and 35th-ranked Argentine Juan Monaco.

Argentine Nalbandian suffered an injury when he and his national teammates clashed (unsuccessfully) with French players in the semi-finals of the Davis Cup earlier this month.

The American player Ginepri suffered an elbow injury during a recent training session in the U.S while Haas can’t come due to a shoulder injury, according to the organizers.

The biennial contest’s first edition in 2006 attracted Carlos Moya, Nicolas Kiefer, Rainer Schuettler and Juan Carlos Ferrero. The championship was won by Germany’s Schuettler, currently ranked 90th.

Vietnam’s U23 squad wins Thang Long Cup

Vietnam’s U23 squad wins Thang Long CupVietnam’s U23 team did themselves proud by winning the Thang Long Cup in Ho Chi Minh City, beating their stronger counterparts from Iran at the Thong Nhat Stadium on Saturday.

Facing a superior rival, the Vietnamese team resorted to making smart plays and keeping a close guard on their rivals, making it very hard for the Persian Gulf visitors to launch attacks.

Not allowed to implement their strategies, the Iranians found both attack and defense difficult, making it possible for the hosts to control the match.

Playmaker Thanh Hung worked as a good link between the Vietnamese defenders and attackers, helping the team maintain better possession of the ball.

Right after the break, Vietnam took the lead with striker Anh Duc heading home a Duc Thien corner kick.

But Anh Duc made things difficult for his team, leaving the field with a red card after an attack on Iran’s Moosavi Ivan.

Coach Phan Thanh Hung immediately replaced Thanh Trung with striker Dinh Tung to facilitate fast counter attacks.

With midfielders moving closer to the home goal to better support the defenders, and the latter positioning themselves very well, the team was able to stand firm against pressure from the Iranians.

In a rapid counterattack towards the end of the match, substitute Dinh Tung slid the ball between goalkeeper Sadeghi’s legs to double the score. The 15,000-strong audience exploded into applause.

Coach Hung said after the game, “The win over Iran was very significant for us. It will help the players gain confidence before the coming Asian Games.”

The win, together with a scoreless draw with Singapore on Thursday and a 2-1 win over Malaysians, earned the Vietnamese the Thang Long Cup in HCMC along with the tournament’s US$20,000 cash prize.

In addition, the team was awarded a VND200 million ($10,000) bonus by the Vietnam Football Federation and another VND100 million by the HCMC Football Federation.

The Thang Long Cup contest in Ho Chi Minh City was organized to celebrate Thang Long-Hanoi’s 1,000th anniversary.

A Hanoi edition of the tournament was held in the capital city from September 20-24. This was won by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, and Vietnam’s national team came in second.
