Vietnam on steady down spiral at World Chess Olympiad

The Vietnamese men’s chess team kept on a steady downward slope at the World Chess Olympiad wrapping up its final and eleventh round Sunday to rank 52nd on the final standing table, after a misleading good start in Russia.

At the last round in Khanty-Mansiysk, Vietnam -- the seed No 27 -- was upset 1.5-2.5 by 38th ranked Iran.

Dao Thien Hai (Elo rating of 2,520) was the only one to lose against Asghar Golizadeh (2,481) while his three compatriots Le Quang Liem (2,694), Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son (2,633) and Nguyen Anh Dung (2,500) tied with Ehsan Ghaem Maghami (2,594), Elshan Moradiabadi (2,578) and Homayoon Toufighi (2,499) respectively.

Vietnam had climbed to third place after winning all four opening rounds before losing the next two to drop to 22nd out of 148 teams.

The team kept downgrading to the 33th place after the tenth round despite not losing any more. Vietnam held Germany, Greece, Kazakhstan and Montenegro to draws in the seventh to the tenth rounds.

Ukraine took the lead after 11 rounds to crown the championship title. Russia 1, Israel, Hungary and China followed in the top five standings. Russia entered five teams in the competitions.

At the last Olympiad in Germany in 2008, Vietnam had finished ninth out of 154 teams.

In the women’s section, Vietnam, the seed No 24, ranked 18th out of 114 teams, with seven wins and four losses.

Russia 1, China, Georgia, Cuba and the US were the top five in the women’s division.

Inter held to goalless draw by Juve

Inter Milan drew 0-0 with bitter Serie A rivals Juventus on Sunday after the two tired sides failed to end a San Siro stalemate despite decent chances.

The result meant champions Inter finished the weekend in second spot, two points behind new leaders Lazio who beat Brescia 1-0 in Rome to move on to 13 points from six games.

Inter had the best opportunity when Marco Storari kept out Maicon's header from a Wesley Sneijder free kick but seventh-placed Juve will feel they deserved the point.

Inter coach Rafael Benitez, in his first "Derby of Italy", named the same side which beat Werder Bremen 4-0 in the Champions League in midweek so fit-again striker Diego Milito had to be content with starting on the bench.

However, the inexperienced Jonathan Biabiany was injured on the half-hour mark so the Argentine came on and had two good chances, one from a cross from the again excellent Samuel Eto'o.

Juventus also had a slight surprise in their starting lineup with Fabio Quagliarella being preferred to talisman Alessandro Del Piero and the striker had three decent sniffs at goal.

The build-up to the match between Inter, who have won the last five league titles, and Juve, Italy's best supported and most successful domestic club, had been dominated by continuing rows over the 2006 match-fixing scandal and fans were hyped up.

Minor trouble between supporters was reported outside the not-quite-packed San Siro before kickoff but the encounter on the pitch was rather tame.

Juve's new winger Milos Krasic forced Julio Cesar into two smart saves although Vincenzo Iaquinta was rightly ruled offside when he netted the Serbian's cross.

“No joking”

Lazio hit top spot earlier on Sunday, after Stefano Mauri netted just before the break when Hernanes, bought from Sao Paulo and already looking like one of the Serie A signings of the season, used his trickery to release the recalled Italy midfielder.

"We have to reach 40 points before anything else, no joking," experienced coach Edy Reja told Sky, still fearing another relegation dogfight for the 1974 and 2000 champions.

Palermo's new Slovenian midfielder Josip Ilicic has also made a big impression in his first weeks in Italy and scored his third league goal with a spectacular left-footed shot to set up a 2-1 win at struggling Fiorentina.

It was a day for midfielders breaking forward and Marek Hamsik made third-placed Napoli's pressure tell by bagging the second-half opener in a 2-0 home victory over AS Roma, who were runners-up last term but now lie second from bottom.

Claudio Ranieri's Roma beat Inter at home last weekend for their first win of the campaign but they threatened little in Naples where the home side doubled their lead through Juan's own goal.

Luca Toni headed home deep into stoppage time to give Genoa a 2-1 home win over Bari while Sampdoria drew 1-1 at Bologna.

Chievo drew 0-0 with Cagliari and Lecce beat Catania 1-0 before Serie A stopped for the international break.

AC Milan, in fourth, edged past Parma 1-0 on Saturday.

Rookie Fung swings to win

HCM CITY — Malaysian Nicholas Fung won the final at the Mercedes-Benz Masters Vietnam on Saturday.

The 20-year-old from Sabah beat Thailand's Panuphol Pittayarat, aged 17, 4&3 at Song Be Golf Resort in Binh Duong Province.

VN emerging tournament destination

Martin Schulz, Mercedes-Benz's Director of Sales and Marketing talk about the prospect of Viet Nam tournaments.

What do you think of the prospect of golf in Viet Nam?

Viet Nam really has a tradition of golf, which saw the first golf course in Da Lat in the 1950s. The country is now emerging as a golf destination.

Golf has been improving a lot. More and more Vietnamese golfers are engaging the game and for sure in few years of time more and more top players with world-ranking would come from Viet Nam.

How does Mercedes-Benz contribute to developing golf?

Mercedes-Benz has two kinds of golf tournaments. The amateur competition or MB Trophy, is the biggest amateur golf tournament in Viet Nam.

The Masters was established in 2007, providing a platform to identify and nurse talented young golfers. This year golfers even had a chance to qualify some big international tournaments, for example, the best six players today qualify for the Singapore Barclay Open. — VNS

Fung won the Vietnam Amateur when he was 17 in 2007 and was thrilled with his second victory in Vietnam, which earned him a cheque for US$14,000.

"It's my first victory. I am so happy. People here are great and supported me in the tournament.

I was a little nervous on the first nine, but calmed down on the back. I kept my ball in play really well this week, which was the key. I had two really tough matches on the first day so it's hard to believe I am standing here now as winner," said Fung.

He moved into third position on the Mercedes-Benz Tour Order of Merit with $21,373 in winnings.

Panuphol won $8,000 for what is his fifth second place finish of the season. He was runner up in the Mercedes-Benz Masters Singapore in August and also finished second in three events in Thailand.

In the playoff for third and fourth place Wisut Artjanawat from Thailand beat Filipino Rey Pagunsan.

Viet Nam's top golfer Tran Le Duy Nhat reached the second round and received $1,250. Nhat also plans to compete in the Mercedes-Benz Masters Indonesia, which is the season-ending Tour Championship.

According to Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Chu, General Secretary of Viet Nam Golf Association, to develop the sport, the golf courses need to have incentive price policies to allow more children to approach the sport.

The authorities also need to develop more public golf courses, which would allow more people to practice golf as well as develop the competition systems for young people. — VNS
