Drogba gives Arsenal blues as Liverpool humbled

Chelsea's Didier Drogba proved Arsenal's nemesis again as he inspired the champions to a 2-0 win over their London rivals and Blackpool pulled off a stunning 2-1 victory at Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday.

Chelsea bounced back from defeat at Manchester City to overpower Arsenal at Stamford Bridge and move four points clear at the top as Liverpool slumped into the relegation zone following Blackpool's triumph on their first league visit to Anfield since 1971.

Liverpool's day started badly when more than 2,000 fans marched from the city center to protest against the ownership of Americans Tom Hicks and George Gillett and the defeat left new manager Roy Hodgson with just one league victory in seven matches.

Manchester City beat Newcastle United 2-1 to leapfrog Manchester United and Arsenal and move into second place.

Chelsea, who have beaten Arsenal in their last four league matches, top the table with 18 points, followed by City on 14, United on 13 and Arsenal on 11.

The victory was Chelsea's sixth in seven league games and Drogba again proved an unstoppable force against Arsenal, giving his side the lead with a stunning flick on the turn after 40 minutes to notch up his 13th goal in 13 appearances against Arsene Wenger's team.

Defender Alex sealed victory with an unstoppable free kick after 85 minutes, ending a difficult week for Chelsea, during which manager Carlo Ancelotti's father died, on a high.

"For the last two days the players have trained exceptionally well -- the day after Carlo's father's death was a bit lackluster," Chelsea assistant coach Ray Wilkins told a news conference.

"We were disappointing against Manchester City last week and we did not perform all that well today.

“You saw not a fantastic performance but a different performance in that we ground out a win. The three points was what we went for and that's what we got."

Wenger said he was pleased with Arsenal's performance.

"I just want to say that the game demonstrates how you can play well and lose the game," he said.

"We had the chances to score today, two in the first two minutes, but when you have the chances you have to score. We need to be more clinical offensively -- and defensively."

Blackpool stunned Liverpool with a 29th-minute penalty from Charlie Adam after Glen Johnson's foul on Luke Varney who struck again for the visitors before halftime.

Headed home

Defender Sotirios Kyrgiakos pulled one back for Liverpool after 53 minutes when he headed home a Steven Gerrard free kick, but the home side, who lost Spain striker Fernando Torres with an injury after nine minutes, were unable to fight back.

"It's a bad result and a very bad day," Hodgson told a news conference. "There's nothing more I can say.”

“We were very anxious to get back on track, to get the three points and lift ourselves up the table.

"No words or anything I can say can change that situation or make it better," he added.

Manchester City took the lead against Newcastle with a first-half penalty from Carlos Tevez and England's Adam Johnson fired a 75th-minute winner after Jonas Gutierrez had equalized.

The visitors also lost striker Hatem Ben Arfa with a suspected broken leg.

"It does not look good," Newcastle manager Chris Hughton told reporters. "It looks like a broken leg.”

“Everyone will have their own opinion but it was a tackle that did not need to be made."

Goals aplenty on the menu for Inter-Juve

Football purists will be hoping for a goal glut when champions Inter Milan host giants Juventus in the plum tie of the weekend in Serie A.

Both sides have already smashed in four goals twice this season, most recently when Inter thumped Werder Bremen 4-0 in the Champions League on Wednesday.

What's more, Juve have the best attack in Serie A with 12 goals in five games but also have the joint worst defense alongside AS Roma and Udinese—both in the bottom three—having leaked nine.

Inter have hit four goals in two of their last three matches and it all points to the potential for an entertaining encounter on Sunday.

However, it is difficult to see the visitors emerging victorious.

Champions Inter are top of Serie A with 10 points, ahead of Lazio on goal difference while Juve are three points back in mid-table.

Although Inter have not always impressed this season, they did grind out crucial 2-1 victories against Udinese and Palermo before hammering Bari 4-0.

Their only real blip was their 1-0 defeat at Roma last time out courtesy of Mirko Vucinic's injury time winner.

But even without forwards Diego Milito and Goran Pandev and captain Javier Zanetti, they were highly impressive on Wednesday in Europe.

Juve, on the other hand, have been wildly inconsistent this campaign but it has made for entertaining viewing.

They have twice drawn 3-3 at home against Sampdoria and then in the Europa League against minnows Lech Poznan.

They were well beaten when going down 1-0 at Bari and 3-1 at home to Palermo but have showed glimpses of their potential when winning 4-0 at Udinese and 4-2 at home to Cagliari.

The problem for Juve is that they have never looked secure at the back and if there is one team likely to exploit that, it is Inter.

Inter's players are confident ahead of the game with Argentina midfielder Esteban Cambiasso insisting that Wednesday's win over Werder had changed nothing for them.

"I don't think it changes anything, we already knew before the game that we were top of the league," he said.

"In the changing room we're always calm but you can never control what others are saying."

There is an unlikely top of the table clash this weekend in Rome where Lazio entertain newly-promoted Brescia, with either team capable of heading the table with victory.

Brescia have been a breath of fresh air and could already have been top but for last week's 2-1 defeat at Bari.

Lazio's rise is perhaps no less surprising given their financial difficulties and the sale of star players, such as Pandev, over recent years to try to balance the books.

Another team that could be sitting pretty atop the league at the end of the weekend is Chievo who host Cagliari.

However, the Flying Donkeys have had two other opportunities to top the league only to lose home games.

Sunday:

Lecce - Catania, Bologna - Sampdoria, Chievo - Cagliari, Fiorentina - Palermo, Genoa - Bari, Lazio - Brescia, Napoli - AS Roma, Inter Milan – Juventus

Sunderland thwart Manchester United title hopes

Manchester United's faltering-away form continued to blight their Premier League title challenge when they were held to a 0-0 draw at Sunderland on Saturday.

The match started 20 minutes late after a burst pipe damaged their dressing room causing part of the ceiling to collapse.

But there was nothing so destructive about the United attack, as a well-disciplined home defense held them to a fourth successive away draw in the league this season.

Chelsea, who host Arsenal on Sunday, are top with 15 points, followed by United on 13 and Arsenal on 11. United have dropped eight points in their opening four matches on their travels.

Tottenham Hotspur are fifth on 11 points after coming from behind to beat Aston Villa 2-1, Everton got their first win this season with a 2-0 success at Birmingham City and West Ham United now prop up the table after a 1-1 home draw with Fulham.

Hit post

Sunderland, who have now drawn their last four league games, went closest to scoring at the Stadium of Light when Boudewijn Zenden hit the post in the first half, but United manager Alex Ferguson said he was happy to leave with a point.

"I think you have to give credit to Sunderland, their home record this season has been fantastic," he told Sky Sports.

"The most important thing for us to do was not lose a goal because that's the area we've been weak in away games this season."

He said the incident before the match, when part of the roof of the visitors' dressing room collapsed, was not an issue.

"The staff at Sunderland were fantastic, and it did not disturb our build-up to the match very much."

Van the man

Rafael van der Vaart's rip-roaring week continued when he scored both goals as Spurs won at White Hart Lane to inflict a first defeat on Gerard Houllier since he became Villa manager.

Villa took the lead when Marc Albrighton tapped in at the far post after 16 minutes to score his first goal for the club.

However, Spurs stormed back when Van der Vaart headed them level in stoppage time at the end of the first half and put them ahead with a well-taken strike 15 minutes from time.

The Dutchman's performance followed his adventures on Wednesday when he missed a penalty, scored a goal and got sent off in the Champions League win over Twente Enschede.

Everton, the only one of the 92 League clubs without a win before kickoff, ended that unwanted record when they climbed off the bottom of the table by beating Birmingham at St Andrews.

Roger Johnson put through his own net after 54 minutes and Tim Cahill added the second with a header for his 100th English League goal after the 90th as Birmingham lost at home in the league for the first time since September last year.

The victory lifted Everton into 17th place and sent their local arch-rivals Liverpool into the relegation zone at least until they host Blackpool on Sunday.

Fulham's Clint Dempsey, who caused England goalkeeper Robert Green huge embarrassment when he scored a soft goal against him for the United States in the World Cup in June, beat him again after 33 minutes when he scored against West Ham United at Upton Park -- but this time Green had no chance of saving.

Dempsey controlled the ball with his chest before firing home from 12 yards. Frederic Piquionne equalized for the Hammers early in the second half and the match ended 1-1. West Ham have five points, the same as Wolves who lost 2-0 at Wigan Athletic.

Hosts Vietnam crown invitational Eximbank Cup

The 10-man Olympic Vietnam beat Iran 2-0 in the last round Saturday to crown the championship title of the invitational tournament Eximbank Cup in Ho Chi Minh City to celebrate the 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi.

After taking a 1-0 lead with the goal by Anh Duc, the hosts Vietnam had to play with ten men at the start of the second half but braced up their attacking formation to double the score at the 80th minute.

In the 45th minute, Duc Thien curved a flying pass from the left wing to striker Anh Duc speeding down into Iran box and heading home the opening goal.

Just two minutes into the second half of the game, Anh Duc -- who scored three goals for Vietnam at the tourney -- was given a red card for fouling a rival.

Iran began piling up pressure towards the Vietnam’s field by launching long attacks with flying passes. However, the hosts’ defensive wall turned all of them down from outside the box.

Ten minutes before the end, Dinh Tung was set up in the left side and dribbled the ball into Iran box and slotted the ball through the legs of Iranian goalkeeper to fix a 2-0 victory for Vietnam.

In the 89th minute, Iran central defender Kar Rasoul was booked a second yellow card of the tense match and had to leave the field.

In the other match, Malaysia held Singapore to a goalless draw.

After three rounds, Vietnam scored seven points from two wins and a draw at the four-team event. Iran followed with four points, Singapore pocketed three from all three ties and Malaysia with one point.

Zico quits as Flamengo director after four months

Former Brazil captain Zico has quit as director of his beloved Flamengo after only four months, saying that rivalries within the country's most popular club had made his life impossible.

"It's not possible to do what I want with Flamengo," said Zico, who is considered one of Brazil's greatest players, and was executive director of football at the club.

"I've noticed that my presence has not been favorable and has caused discontent among a lot of people," Zico added in a statement posted on his website (www.ziconarede.com.br) in the early hours of Friday morning.

"It's not possible for me to continue," he said, adding that his opponents had been criticizing his sons to get at him.

"I've been unfairly attacked, mainly via my sons, who have not been involved at any time, and this goes against the values and concepts I learned with my father.

"I can't allow this cowardly feud to continue using my family."

"Today, my grandson Alberto was born but Flamengo died in my heart," added Zico, who coached Japan at the 2006 World Cup and led Fenerbahce to the Champions League quarterfinals in 2008.

Flamengo won the Brazilian championship last year but risk relegation this season.

During Zico's short return to the club, Rogerio Lourenco was sacked as coach and replaced by former Brazil midfielder Silas, who himself is now in danger of being fired.

Zico is the most popular player the club has produced, having played in a golden generation which won three Brazilian championship titles, the South American Libertadores Cup and the World Club championship.

Flamengo claim to have 25 million supporters in Brazil but the club is notorious for its political in-fighting as well as the enormous pressure placed on coaches and players.
