Vietnam’s U23 in Asian Games second round

Vietnam’s U23 in Asian Games second roundThe national U23 team advanced to the second round at the 2010 Asian Games despite a 0-1 loss to Iran in their final group stage match on Saturday.

Vietnam finished third in Group B behind Iran and Turkmenistan after a 3-1 win over Bahrain, a 2-6 loss to Turkmenistan and the Saturday defeat to Iran.

According to the rules, the top two teams from the six groups along with four best third-placed teams will advance to the next round.

Among the third-placed teams, Maldives with two points and Palestine with one point are behind Vietnam who has three points.

The Vietnamese players tried hard to force a draw with Iran, while the latter did not want to lose because it would put them in a difficult situation if Turkmenistan won.

The Iranians therefore were very defensive from the very beginning, making it difficult for their opponents to launch attacks.

Vietnam was in trouble after two minutes when goalkeeper Tan Truong took a goal kick standing outside the penalty area and Iran was offered a free kick.

Truong stopped a powerful shot but then he made a costly mistake, badly positioning himself while an Iranian player threw the ball from the right flank.

The ball found an unmarked Hosseini Seyed who headed it to the back of the net.

The Vietnamese had to try even harder to avoid a defeat, but were unable to create clear chances to score and equalize.

In the other Group B match, Turkmenistan drew 1-1 with Bahrain to be placed second in the group.

In the next round, Vietnam will clash with the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea for a berth in the quarterfinals.

The match is likely to be a very tough one for Vietnam, with the Koreans finishing on top of Group C winning all three matches.

HCMC – Vietnam’s U-23 football team won the international Eximbank Cup after beating Iran U21 2-0 in Saturday’s final at Thong Nhat Stadium in HCMC on Saturday.

Singapore U23 secured third place when they tied goalless with Malaysia in Saturday’s earlier game.

Both Vietnam and Iran went into the final with four points from the two opening games, but because of goal difference Iran only needed a draw while Vietnam needed to win.

The home side had beaten Malaysia 2-1 in the opener and tied goalless with Singapore in the second game, while Iran drew 1-1 with Singapore in the first game and beat Malaysia 2-0 in the second game.

Vietnam’s coach Phan Thanh Hung used the strongest squad in hopes of keeping the cup at home. He only used eight key players from the SEA Games line up as they had lost 1-0 to Malaysia in the finals of the 25th Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) last December in Laos.

Iran controlled the ball in the first minutes, however, under heavy pressure from local fans at Thong Nhat Stadium, the hosts regained composure.

Striker Nguyen Anh Duc opened the score at 44 minutes with a header after receiving the ball from midfielder Nguyen Duc Thien in the penalty box.

Vietnam was reduced to 10 men in early minutes of the second half when striker Nguyen Anh Duc was sent off with a red card. The visitors tried to exploit the advantage, vainly putting more pressure on the Vietnamese defense.

Substitute player Hoang Dinh Tung, who replaced Nguyen Thanh Trung in the 50th minute, doubled the score in the 80th minute. Tung broke the offside trap before beating Iran’s goalie at the near post.

The round robin was a celebration of the 1,000 anniversary of the Thang Long - Hanoi. Vietnam won with seven points earning them $20,000. Iran finished second with US$10,000. The Singapore side pocketed US$5,000.

Hosts Vietnam crown invitational Eximbank Cup

The 10-man Olympic Vietnam beat Iran 2-0 in the last round Saturday to crown the championship title of the invitational tournament Eximbank Cup in Ho Chi Minh City to celebrate the 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi.

After taking a 1-0 lead with the goal by Anh Duc, the hosts Vietnam had to play with ten men at the start of the second half but braced up their attacking formation to double the score at the 80th minute.

In the 45th minute, Duc Thien curved a flying pass from the left wing to striker Anh Duc speeding down into Iran box and heading home the opening goal.

Just two minutes into the second half of the game, Anh Duc -- who scored three goals for Vietnam at the tourney -- was given a red card for fouling a rival.

Iran began piling up pressure towards the Vietnam’s field by launching long attacks with flying passes. However, the hosts’ defensive wall turned all of them down from outside the box.

Ten minutes before the end, Dinh Tung was set up in the left side and dribbled the ball into Iran box and slotted the ball through the legs of Iranian goalkeeper to fix a 2-0 victory for Vietnam.

In the 89th minute, Iran central defender Kar Rasoul was booked a second yellow card of the tense match and had to leave the field.

In the other match, Malaysia held Singapore to a goalless draw.

After three rounds, Vietnam scored seven points from two wins and a draw at the four-team event. Iran followed with four points, Singapore pocketed three from all three ties and Malaysia with one point.

Fairud nearly scored for the Singaporean side with a header in the 73rd minute, but it was saved by Vietnamese defender Minh Duc from close range.

Vietnam faced some disadvantage in the 80th minutes when Van Hieu was sent off after receiving the red card. Despite playing with ten men, Vietnam had good ball possession in the last minutes. However, their forwards missed all scoring chances.

In the earlier game on Thursday, Iran U21 secured a 2-0 victory over Malaysia U23. Striker Moosavi scored the first goal for Iran in the 42nd minute before Afshin finalized the game at 2-0 in the 76th minute.
