Sunderland thwart Manchester United title hopes

Manchester United's faltering-away form continued to blight their Premier League title challenge when they were held to a 0-0 draw at Sunderland on Saturday.

The match started 20 minutes late after a burst pipe damaged their dressing room causing part of the ceiling to collapse.

But there was nothing so destructive about the United attack, as a well-disciplined home defense held them to a fourth successive away draw in the league this season.

Chelsea, who host Arsenal on Sunday, are top with 15 points, followed by United on 13 and Arsenal on 11. United have dropped eight points in their opening four matches on their travels.

Tottenham Hotspur are fifth on 11 points after coming from behind to beat Aston Villa 2-1, Everton got their first win this season with a 2-0 success at Birmingham City and West Ham United now prop up the table after a 1-1 home draw with Fulham.

Hit post

Sunderland, who have now drawn their last four league games, went closest to scoring at the Stadium of Light when Boudewijn Zenden hit the post in the first half, but United manager Alex Ferguson said he was happy to leave with a point.

"I think you have to give credit to Sunderland, their home record this season has been fantastic," he told Sky Sports.

"The most important thing for us to do was not lose a goal because that's the area we've been weak in away games this season."

He said the incident before the match, when part of the roof of the visitors' dressing room collapsed, was not an issue.

"The staff at Sunderland were fantastic, and it did not disturb our build-up to the match very much."

Van the man

Rafael van der Vaart's rip-roaring week continued when he scored both goals as Spurs won at White Hart Lane to inflict a first defeat on Gerard Houllier since he became Villa manager.

Villa took the lead when Marc Albrighton tapped in at the far post after 16 minutes to score his first goal for the club.

However, Spurs stormed back when Van der Vaart headed them level in stoppage time at the end of the first half and put them ahead with a well-taken strike 15 minutes from time.

The Dutchman's performance followed his adventures on Wednesday when he missed a penalty, scored a goal and got sent off in the Champions League win over Twente Enschede.

Everton, the only one of the 92 League clubs without a win before kickoff, ended that unwanted record when they climbed off the bottom of the table by beating Birmingham at St Andrews.

Roger Johnson put through his own net after 54 minutes and Tim Cahill added the second with a header for his 100th English League goal after the 90th as Birmingham lost at home in the league for the first time since September last year.

The victory lifted Everton into 17th place and sent their local arch-rivals Liverpool into the relegation zone at least until they host Blackpool on Sunday.

Fulham's Clint Dempsey, who caused England goalkeeper Robert Green huge embarrassment when he scored a soft goal against him for the United States in the World Cup in June, beat him again after 33 minutes when he scored against West Ham United at Upton Park -- but this time Green had no chance of saving.

Dempsey controlled the ball with his chest before firing home from 12 yards. Frederic Piquionne equalized for the Hammers early in the second half and the match ended 1-1. West Ham have five points, the same as Wolves who lost 2-0 at Wigan Athletic.

Hosts Vietnam crown invitational Eximbank Cup

The 10-man Olympic Vietnam beat Iran 2-0 in the last round Saturday to crown the championship title of the invitational tournament Eximbank Cup in Ho Chi Minh City to celebrate the 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi.

After taking a 1-0 lead with the goal by Anh Duc, the hosts Vietnam had to play with ten men at the start of the second half but braced up their attacking formation to double the score at the 80th minute.

In the 45th minute, Duc Thien curved a flying pass from the left wing to striker Anh Duc speeding down into Iran box and heading home the opening goal.

Just two minutes into the second half of the game, Anh Duc -- who scored three goals for Vietnam at the tourney -- was given a red card for fouling a rival.

Iran began piling up pressure towards the Vietnam’s field by launching long attacks with flying passes. However, the hosts’ defensive wall turned all of them down from outside the box.

Ten minutes before the end, Dinh Tung was set up in the left side and dribbled the ball into Iran box and slotted the ball through the legs of Iranian goalkeeper to fix a 2-0 victory for Vietnam.

In the 89th minute, Iran central defender Kar Rasoul was booked a second yellow card of the tense match and had to leave the field.

In the other match, Malaysia held Singapore to a goalless draw.

After three rounds, Vietnam scored seven points from two wins and a draw at the four-team event. Iran followed with four points, Singapore pocketed three from all three ties and Malaysia with one point.

Zico quits as Flamengo director after four months

Former Brazil captain Zico has quit as director of his beloved Flamengo after only four months, saying that rivalries within the country's most popular club had made his life impossible.

"It's not possible to do what I want with Flamengo," said Zico, who is considered one of Brazil's greatest players, and was executive director of football at the club.

"I've noticed that my presence has not been favorable and has caused discontent among a lot of people," Zico added in a statement posted on his website (www.ziconarede.com.br) in the early hours of Friday morning.

"It's not possible for me to continue," he said, adding that his opponents had been criticizing his sons to get at him.

"I've been unfairly attacked, mainly via my sons, who have not been involved at any time, and this goes against the values and concepts I learned with my father.

"I can't allow this cowardly feud to continue using my family."

"Today, my grandson Alberto was born but Flamengo died in my heart," added Zico, who coached Japan at the 2006 World Cup and led Fenerbahce to the Champions League quarterfinals in 2008.

Flamengo won the Brazilian championship last year but risk relegation this season.

During Zico's short return to the club, Rogerio Lourenco was sacked as coach and replaced by former Brazil midfielder Silas, who himself is now in danger of being fired.

Zico is the most popular player the club has produced, having played in a golden generation which won three Brazilian championship titles, the South American Libertadores Cup and the World Club championship.

Flamengo claim to have 25 million supporters in Brazil but the club is notorious for its political in-fighting as well as the enormous pressure placed on coaches and players.

HCM CITY — Argentina's Juan Monaco will meet American Mardy Fish in the Heineken Stars 2010 final after both took control of the semi-final matches.

World No 42 Monaco stunned world No 21 American Sam Querrey in straight sets 7-6 (1), 6-2 while world No 19 Mardy Fish also defeated world No 35 Tommy Robredo in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6, (7-5).

"I am happy to be the winner today. I played very well and took advantage of Querrey's unforced errors," Monaco said.

"I have made many between-the-legs shots in my career and I am happy I could do it again here for Vietnamese fans. I just chased the ball and hit it but when I turned my head, I was surprised to see it went over the net," the Argentine said when asked about a wonderful shot in the second set.

"I am currently in 42nd place and I hope I to finish the year in the top 20," he said.

Querrey, who has won four ATP titles this year, said: "I served well today but made so many unforced errors while Monaco played great tennis today. He had very good forehands and backhands."

"The time change did not effect my loss because I felt good for the match," added Querrey, who will be aiming to end the year as American No 2.

Despite being an exhibition tournament, players showed off their world-class tennis skills. While Querrey boasted powerful serves, scoring 14 aces throughout the match, Monaco frequently blasted heavy forehands as well as accurate and fine-slice backhands into corners.

The first set went on serves when Querrey saved a breakpoint in the fourth game and Monaco did the same to save two breakpoints in the fifth game to force a first set tie break. Querrey made five unforced errors in the tie break to allow the Argentine to take the set with a volley winner.

The second set went to Monaco, who broke the fifth game to lead 3-2 and won his service game to expand the lead to 4-2 with effective attacks at the net and heavy forehands into the corners.

Monaco broke the seventh game with the most amazing shot of the match. When the score was at 30-15, Querrey sent a lob up and over Monaco. The Argentine sprinted to the baseline to hit the ball through his legs and took 3,000 fans by surprise.
