Barca frustrated at Rubin Kazan in Champions League

Spanish giants Barcelona were held to a 1-1 draw by Russian champions Rubin Kazan in their Champions League Group D encounter at Kazan on Wednesday.

Both goals came from the penalty spot, with Ecuadorian midfielder Christian Noboa giving Rubin the lead in the first half and David Villa equalising on the hour mark.

The result leaves Barcelona on top of the group with four points from two matches, while Kazan have just one point, having lost 1-0 at FC Copenhagen in their opening match.

Panathinaikos, thrashed 5-1 by Barcelona in their first game, host Copenhagen later on Wednesday.

"We got a very important point tonight," said Villa.

"The penalty in the first half made life hard for us because they were playing well in defence.

"We missed a lot of chances and the Rubin goalkeeper played very well, but finally we managed to level. Rubin played well on the counter-attack, so we had to play very carefully in defence."

Spanish champions Barcelona started cautiously in Kazan, no doubt mindful of the shock 2-1 defeat Rubin inflicted on them at Camp Nou in the group phase last season.

It was Barca who created the first clear chance in the 12th minute, when Villa sent a razor-sharp pass into Rubin's box for Pedro Rodriguez, who lofted the ball against the crossbar from eight yards.

Barcelona had quickly settled into their house style, keeping the ball under control and probing the hosts' defence for frailties, with Rubin content to sit back and defend.

Villa threatened in the 26th minute, shooting across goal and wide on the half-volley after the ball fell to him following a corner.

The hosts replied with a series of counter-attacks, which ended with a foul by Daniel Alves on Vitaly Kaleshin in Barca's box.

Rubin skipper Noboa smashed home a powerful spot-kick to give the hosts a 30th-minute lead.

The visitors immediately pressed forward in search of an equaliser, with Pedro firing wide from 10 yards after receiving another pass from Villa shortly before the break.

After the interval Barcelona seized the initiative completely, pinning the hosts back but to no immediate avail, as Rubin defended stoutly.

But Pep Guardiola's side were handed an opportunity to level when Lasha Salukvadze bundled over Andres Iniesta in the area and Villa squeezed a precise penalty into the bottom-right corner.

Barca welcomed back Lionel Messi from injury and the second-half substitute saw a chance blocked by Rubin goalkeeper Sergei Ryzhikov in the 71st minute.

Rubin substitute Obafemi Martins almost snatched victory when he headed against a post late on, while Spanish World Cup winner Iniesta lifted a shot over the bar in injury time.

"I'm pleased with the result. We secured a very precious point tonight," said Rubin coach Kurban Berdyev.

"We played very organised football and tried to minimise the risks.

"I think that Barcelona have already reserved their place in the knockout stage. I think the battle between the three other clubs for for the remaining place is still ahead."

FIFA track transfers with new online system

FIFA said on Wednesday that a more transparent online system for international player transfers would become compulsory on October 1, helping to protect under 18 year-olds.

The Transfer Matching System (TMS) has been tested in 18 countries since February 2008 and gradually expanded, currently covering 3,633 clubs, allowing footballing authorities to see more details on each transfer.

Each club involved in a transfer has to enter the same details including bank accounts, amounts of money, timing and pay, with added documents such as identity documents and contracts, or it will be blocked.

"This is an historic moment for football," said FIFA president Sepp Blatter.

"TMS is a relatively simple online system but it will have a tremendous impact on the international transfer of players.

"The most important thing is that it increases the transparency of individual transactions and helps us tackle issues such as the fight against money laundering and protection of minors in transfers," Blatter added.

World football's governing body FIFA argued that by keeping track of player histories it can ensure that clubs are compensated properly for training upcoming youngsters who then leave, and help limit the international movement of under-18s under rules introduced last year.

FIFA slapped a transfer ban on Chelsea that was overturned on appeal in May, in a dispute between the Londoners and Lens over the transfer of now 19 year-old Gael Kakuta from the French club in 2007.

Vietnam posts unconvincing win in U23 opener

Vietnam posts unconvincing win in U23 openerVietnam’s U23 footballers beat Malaysia 2-1 in the opener of the Thang Long Cup on Tuesday.

However, the victory at HCMC’s Thong Nhat Stadium also exposed some lapses.

Despite training together for less a month and some players joining the squad for the first time, the home team started the game full of confidence and in high spirits, drawing cheers from the 15,000 or so spectators.

The 4-5-1 formation resorted to by coach Phan Thanh Hung, who took Hanoi T&T to the V-League 2010 championship, worked effectively.

The most prominent player in the home team was skipper Bui Van Hieu who formed a good link between the midfielders Duc Thien, Ngoc Dieu, Van Thang and Thanh Trung.

The midfielders worked very well, making it possible for striker Anh Duc to score two goals midway through the first half.

But the two early goals caused the Vietnamese young players to lose concentration, exemplified by goalie Tan Truong’s goal kick directly to Talaha Idlan less than 20 meters. The latter did not spurn the gift.

Some complacent players almost cost the home team dear at some times in the second half.

Speaking to Thanh Nien after the game, coach Thanh Hung said, “We played exceptionally in the first half and took advantage with two early goals.

“However, my young players got too satisfied. They didn’t concentrate after the goals. Not only goalkeeper Tan Truong but also other positions wanted to “show off” their personal skills; and the whole team didn’t play very well in the second half.”

Malaysian coach Rajagobal said, “Vietnam played very well and we conceded two goals early in the game.

“Yet I am pleased with my players’ display in the second half. They will play better and better after each game.”

In the previous match, Iran drew 1-1 with Singapore. Iran’s coach Gholamhossin Peyrorang was upset with the referee because he felt the latter was not strict enough with the violent Singaporeans who made his players underperform.

The September 28-October 2 Thang Long Cup is being held in Ho Chi Minh City to celebrate Thang Long – Hanoi’s 1,000th anniversary.

The Thang Long-Hanoi Cup ended in Hanoi on Friday with Vietnam’s national football team coming in second behind the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

HCMC – Vietnam’s U-23 football team defeated Malaysian counterparts 2-1 in the opener of the international football tournament - Eximbank Cup 2010 at Thong Nhat Stadium in HCMC on Tuesday while Iran U-21 tied 1-1 with Singapore’s U23 in the earlier game.

The Malaysian team was said to be strong because they would send their best players who edged Vietnam 1-0 in the finals of the 25th Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) last December in Laos. However, Coach K. Rajagopal made seven changes from that line-up.

The Vietnamese team participated in the round-robin tournament with their strongest squad in hopes of keeping the cup at home. However, Vietnam only kept eight key players in their SEA Games’s line up.

Under heavy pressure from local fans, hosts Vietnam, coached by Phan Thanh Hung, dominated the game from the beginning and they placed more pressure on their opponents.

The local fans celebrated the victory just 18 minutes into the game when striker Nguyen Anh Duc opened the score after receiving the ball from midfielder Thanh Trung in the penalty box.

The home side continuously organized attacks on Malaysian defending lines after the goal and Nguyen Anh Duc doubled for his team in the 25th minute.

However, goalie Bui Tan Truong made a serious mistake when he kicked the ball from the penalty area to his teammates. The ball, however, found the Malaysian striker Tahala, who made no mistake, narrowing the scoring gap for his team in the last minutes of the first half.

The second half was a different story when the visitors bounced back and put more pressure on their opponents aiming to level the scoring gap but all their scoring chances were denied by goalie Bui Tan Truong.

Despite good ball possession in the last minutes, Vietnamese forwarders failed to grasp any scoring chances, leaving the score at 2-1 upon the referee’s whistle at the end of the game.

In the earlier opening game, Singapore, who made eight changes from the team that played at the SEA Games, including the drafting of two players aged above 23, tied 1-1 with Iran, who are the youngest in their line-up, as all players are under 21.

Malaysia will play Iran U-21 at 4:00 p.m. and Vietnam U23 take on Singapore at 6:00 p.m. in their second games on Thursday.

Iran U21, Singapore U23 and Malaysia U23 together with hosts Vietnam U23 are competing at the Eximbank Football Cup, a tournament to celebrate the 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long –Hanoi.

The four teams are playing in a round-robin tournament with the team that gets the most points being declared the championship. The tournament is taking place from Wednesday to Saturday at Thong Nhat Stadium in HCMC.

The winners will receive a cash prize of US$20,000, the runners-up US$10,000, and the third team US$5,000.
