Resilient Belgium thwarts Australia's world group bid

Belgium secured a place in the Davis Cup world group on Monday, winning both the reverse singles in the playoff against Australia, the same opponents they had knocked out of the elite league in 2007.

For the second time in the tie, which spilled into its fourth day because of heavy rain on Sunday, Oliver Rochus brought Belgium level when he downed Peter Luczak 7-6 6-4 6-7 7-6 at the Cairns International Tennis Center.

In the decider, Steve Darcis beat Carsten Ball 7-6 6-3 6-4 to spoil Lleyton Hewitt's celebration after the former world number one had emerged as Australia's most successful player in the competition's history, sharing the distinction with Adrian Quist.

The setback left Australia captain John Fitzgerald hoping for a better luck next year and underlined the decline of the former tennis powerhouse.

"Do we think we can qualify next year? Absolutely," he was quoted as saying by the Australian Associated Press (AAP).

"It is hard to swallow (being out of the World Group) but it is a different sport now.

"It was a different competition back then, you have to be realistic about it."

Hewitt had beaten Ruben Bemelmans 7-6 7-5 2-6 6-4 in the first singles to join Quist as Australia's most successful Davis Cup player with 43 wins.

Belgium, however, drew level when Rochus got the better of Carsten Ball 6-4 6-4 7-6.

Hewitt put Australia ahead again on Saturday when he teamed up with Paul Hanley for an easy 6-1 6-2 6-4 win over Rochus and Bemelmans.

Hewitt sustained a wrist injury in the process that ruled him out of the reverse singles and his late replacement Luczak could not reproduce the form that had helped him subdue Rochus in both of their previous encounters.

Tipsarevic steers Serbia into Davis Cup final

Janko Tipsarevic emerged as Serbia's hero after he beat Radek Stepanek in the decisive rubber to propel his country to their first Davis Cup final with an nerve-jangling 3-2 win over the Czech Republic.

The often inconsistent Tipsarevic capped an outstanding individual weekend, having also beaten Tomas Berdych on Friday, by sweeping aside Stepanek 6-0 7-6 6-4 to power the Serbians into a home showdown against nine-time champions France.

Earlier on Sunday, Novak Djokovic pulled Serbia level at 2-2 after he downed Tomas Berdych 4-6 6-3 6-2 6-2 in three hours 14 minutes in front of 18,000 passionate home fans in the Belgrade Arena.

It was Tipsarevic who sent the capacity crowd into raptures with a flawless performance which saw him take the opening set in just 23 minutes, allowing Stepanek to win only seven points.

"This was a fairytale end to the tie," Tipsarevic said in an emotional courtside interview. “I have to thank the crowd for their fantastic support because they brought us back from the dead.”

"Finally, it was my turn to shine for the national team after the others, mostly Djokovic proved to be instrumental so many times," he told a news conference after a flawless performance.

"I am glad I saved my best tennis for the national team in a match of this magnitude."

Tipsarevic seemed to be coasting when he took a 3-1 lead in the second set but after Stepanek broke back to force the tiebreak, the Serbian had to save a set point before clinching it.

He romped away to a 4-0 lead in the third before the nerves started to set in when Stepanek won three games in a row and then saved two match points.

However, the Serbians could not be silenced and after Stepanek sent a backhand wide, the crowd went into a frenzy as they jumped to their feet to hail their hero.

Impregnable fortress

The Serbian team carried Tipsarevic on their shoulders and lay on the court in a heart-shaped formation, sporting the country's flags as the fans gave them a standing ovation.

The wild celebrations on the court and the terraces have become a regular Davis Cup sight in the Belgrade Arena, an impregnable fortress where Serbia have won all four of their home ties since they reached the World Group in 2008.

Djokovic, who had to dig deep to beat Berdych after a sluggish start to the match, was confident Serbia would beat France in the December 3-5 final in what will be a difficult trip for the nine-time winners.

"No team in the world are favorites in the Belgrade Arena, not even if they have the best singles and doubles players in the world," Djokovic said.

"I am confident we can keep our unbeaten record intact but it's too early to think about the French, we now want to celebrate this historic achievement.

"Tipsarevic was the hero of this magnificent victory, he proved that he is a real champion and kept remarkably cool under great pressure," he added. “I am so happy for him.”

US beat Colombia to remain in World Group

Mardy Fish won his second five-set match in three days to lead the United States to a 3-1 win over Colombia in the Davis Cup on Sunday in Bogota.

The triumph keeps the US in the Davis Cup World Group, the highest level in the international team competition.

Fish followed up his opening day win over Alejandro Fallo with a 3-6 6-3 7-5 4-6 8-6 victory against Santiago Giraldo to give the Americans an insurmountable lead in their playoff tie.

Berbatov fires United and Chelsea thrash Blackpool

Dimitar Berbatov scored a brilliant hat-trick to give Manchester United a 3-2 win over Liverpool and Chelsea maintained their goal rush by thrashing Blackpool 4-0 in the Premier League on Sunday.

United were dominant for the first hour with two goals for the Bulgarian striker, but two strikes in six minutes by Steven Gerrard dragged Liverpool level before Berbatov won it six minutes from time.

Chelsea made it five wins out of five with 21 goals and one conceded after they ripped through promoted Blackpool with first-half goals by Salomon Kalou, Florent Malouda (two) and Didier Drogba.

The champions top the standings on 15 points, four clear of United and Arsenal, who drew 1-1 at Sunderland on Saturday.

Manchester City moved up to fourth on eight points after beating Wigan Athletic 2-0 with goals by Carlos Tevez and Yaya Toure.

Tottenham Hotspur, 3-1 comeback winners over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday, are fifth on eight points and the last season's top-five finishers now occupy the first five slots.

In the day's big game at Old Trafford, United were in total control after Berbatov headed in a 42nd-minute corner and added a brilliant second by bringing down a cross on his thigh with his back to goal and scoring with an overhead kick.

Rash challenge

Liverpool, who had offered nothing in attack, then profited from rash defending which allowed Gerrard to pull one back with a penalty after 64 minutes and equalize with a free kick six minutes later.

United had shipped late equalizers against Everton and Fulham in recent weeks but this time they conjured up a winner as Berbatov headed his seventh goal in six games this season.

"I was saying to myself it's going to be 10 but you end up 2-2; it was a travesty of a score-line but a great result in the end," manager Alex Ferguson told Sky Sports.

For the second week running a Drogba corner helped Chelsea into the lead inside two minutes, this time an unmarked Kalou tucking in at the far post.

Drogba also provided the second after 13 minutes, crossing low for Malouda, then the Ivorian striker got on the score-sheet when he swiveled on the edge of the box to bang in the third via a deflection.

Malouda cracked in his second after a Kalou pull-back four minutes before halftime.

Chelsea's fans sat back awaiting more goals but a combination of better Blackpool defense and a drop in attacking intensity led to a scoreless second period.

"It's fantastic, through the years we improve and we try to score as many as we can," Drogba said.

"We scored four in the first half and in the second we had so many chances so maybe this is something we have to think about even if the result was great."
