Angry Arsenal manager fumes over 'bad timing'

SUNDERLAND - Arsene Wenger insisted there was no confrontation with fourth official Martin Atkinson as Arsenal were denied top spot in the Premier League thanks to Darren Bent's dramatic injury-time goal in a 1-1 draw at Sunderland.

England international Bent, who grew up as an Arsenal supporter, scored in the fifth minute of stoppage time after Atkinson had indicated a minimum of four would be added on, to spark a melee near the technical area.

"Take the pictures and look at it. I complained to nobody," Wenger insisted in a curt post-match press conference.

The Football Association are likely to probe the incident.

Alex Song was sent off early in the second-half for the Gunners, who were left to rue a late penalty miss by Tomas Rosicky.

Wenger had praise for his team, who trail Chelsea by two points after missing an opportunity to leapfrog the leaders.

The Frenchman, clearly still fuming at the circumstances in which his side were denied two priceless points, refused to discuss the display of Phil Dowd, the referee.

The Arsenal manager added: "I don't comment on any decision by the referee. You saw the game like I did. Don't ask me to comment on any of the referee's decisions."

On the timing of Bent's fifth goal of the season to cancel out a freak early strike by Cesc Fabregas, who limped off before half-time with a hamstring injury to make him a doubt for Tuesday's League Cup meeting with north London rivals Tottenham, Wenger added: "If you have a watch you can control it. It's as simple as that."

Wenger refused to single out substitute Rosicky's costly miss as the turning point.

"We had problems at the start in the first-half, but the performance was good. In the second-half we controlled the game, even though we had 10 men," said Wenger.

"Unfortunately in the 95th minute Sunderland scored their equalizer but I was very pleased with the performance and we showed all the ingredients of a good team.

"We started slowly but we did well in the second time. We had chances to kill the game but we didn't. The back four did well but we made a mistake on the goal."

After Sunderland enhanced their reputation for upping their game against the Premier League big guns, manager Steve Bruce insisted his Black Cats deserved at least a point.

"On our first-half performance alone we got what we deserved. We created plenty of chances and I was particularly pleased with the way we stuck at it and got our reward," said Bruce.

"We found it more difficult against 10 men but by the letter of the law Song had to go. I feel for Arsene, it's never easy to take when you concede so late on. I know how he feels.

"The complaint is that we played 15 seconds over. The referee is within his rights to play it because it's a minimum of four minutes. You have to play to the whistle and understand the disappointment. The gripe is about the 15 seconds."

Ronaldo responds to boo boys with Real winner

MADRID - Cristiano Ronaldo scored with a deflected freekick to earn Real Madrid a battling 2-1 victory at promoted Real Sociedad in La Liga on Saturday.

The world's most expensive player has endured a frustrating start to the season, being booed and whistled by home and away fans, with his anxiety to score a goal clear for all to see.

His wayward shots, exaggerated complaints to the referee and occasional wild challenge had fans at the Anoeta howling until he struck a fierce freekick which ballooned off the wall and past a stranded Claudio Bravo after 75 minutes.

"Cristiano is Cristiano, we are not going to change him," Real director general Jorge Valdano told Spanish television.

"He has a personality that enables him to be one of the best players in the world, we accept it and understand it as one of his strengths."

Argentina winger Angel Di Maria had put the visitors in front at the start of the second half only for Raul Tamudo to level soon after.

Real moved on to seven points from three games, four ahead of champions Barcelona, who travel to play early La Liga pace-setters Atletico Madrid on Sunday.

Despite dominating possession it was the hosts who created the clearer chances until Di Maria scored a great solo effort in the 51st minute, curling a shot into the top corner.

The lead only lasted 11 minutes, Tamudo arriving unmarked at the far post to bundle in a freekick and Real needed Ronaldo's strike, which deflected off Pepe's back in the wall, to restore the lead.

Furious reaction

Real Sociedad refused to lie down and near the end an error from Sergio Ramos led to Iker Casillas having to save on his line, prompting a furious reaction from his coach Jose Mourinho who jumped from his seat and hurled a plastic bottle into the dugout in disgust.

"They were stronger in the first half, we were in the second. I think a draw would have been the fairest result," Mourinho told reporters.

Earlier, financially-troubled Real Mallorca recorded their first win of the campaign beating Osasuna 2-0 at home.

Gonzalo Castro set them on their way from the penalty spot after 25 minutes and Jonathan de Guzman ran the length of the pitch to secure the result in time added on.

The islanders finished fifth last season to qualify for the Europa League but were barred from entering the competition by UEFA after going into voluntary administration.

Athletic Bilbao fought back from two down to draw 2-2 at Sporting Gijon with goals from Carlos Gurpegi and Spain striker Fernando Llorente, while Espanyol overcame Almeria 1-0.

VN favourites for regional cup

HCM CITY — The draw for the Asean Football Federation (AFFC) Suzuki Cup 2010 in Ha Noi on Wednesday appeared like any other, but it was a significant event for Vietnamese football.

For the first time in the competition's 14-year history, Viet Nam were seeded first.

Although Viet Nam are the reigning champions, the top seeding caps the country's remarkable progress since it rejoined regional football as a fully independent nation only 19 years ago.

The national football team at that time was an enigma to then-strong teams like Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia.

On Viet Nam's debut at the region's largest sporting event, the 1991 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in the Philippines, Viet Nam were drawn in Group B with Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines.

They drew 2-2 with the Philippines but lost 2-1 to Malaysia and 1-0 to Indonesia and failed to qualify for the semi-final.

At the following Singapore SEA Games in 1993, Viet Nam showed progress, beating the Philippines for the first time but eventually went home after the group stages, losing 1-0 to Indonesia and 2-0 to Singapore.

Turning point

The turning point in Vietnamese football came in Thailand when they sprung a surprise at the 18th SEA Games in 1995, by winning a silver medal after losing to Thailand in the final.

After losing to the eventual winners in their opener, they beat Indonesia, a very strong team at that time. They went on to defeat Cambodia 4-0 before further progressing with a 2-0 win over Malaysia.

Winning streak

Their winning streak continued with a last gasp victory over Myanmar in the semi-final before eventually succumbing to Thailand in the final.

This year's tournament is scheduled to be hosted by Viet Nam and Indonesia in December with the two top teams from each group progressing into the semi-finals, which will be played in two-leg matches.

Viet Nam enter the championships as number one seeds. Winning the trophy for a second time would see Viet Nam pull along side Thailand and Singapore among the Southeast Asian elite.

Viet Nam are in the same group as Singapore, Myanmar and the runners-up of the final qualifying round between Laos, Cambodia, Timor Leste and the Philippines.

According to Viet Nam coach Henrique Calisto, the draw is favourable for the defending champions, and Vietnamese football fans may well be in for more noisy celebrating. — VNS

Singapore to show where title heading, says Button

Next week's Singapore Grand Prix will show where the Formula One title is heading and whether McLaren can match Red Bull and Ferrari in the final races, according to world champion Jenson Button.

"I think it'll give us a clearer idea of the destiny of the world championship," the Briton, one of five drivers fighting for the title in a cliffhanger season, said in a McLaren team preview.

"The last time we were at a low-speed, high-downforce track was in Hungary back at the start of August," he added.

"Our car wasn't particularly competitive there and maybe we haven't had a properly representative view of the top teams' relative pace because we've just visited two high-speed circuits."

Red Bull were dominant in Hungary but had a harder time in Belgium and at high-speed Monza last weekend, with neither of their drivers on the Italian podium in a race won by Ferrari's Fernando Alonso.

Despite that, Red Bull's Australian Mark Webber took the championship lead from McLaren's Lewis Hamilton, who retired on the opening lap at Monza.

Hamilton won in Singapore last year.

"I've already drawn a line under Monza,” said the 2008 champion.

“I've learnt from the experience and, while it was extremely disappointing, those things are sometimes what you need to sharpen your mind and raise your game and motivation at an extremely crucial time in the season."

McLaren have been working hard to improve their car and will be bringing new developments that should make it more competitive on slower circuits. There are four more races after Singapore - Japan, South Korea, Brazil and Abu Dhabi.

At the same time the governing International Automobile Federation has tightened the rules to prevent the flexing front wings that were thought to be giving Red Bull an advantage.

"A lot has changed since that race in Budapest," said Button.

"Not least, some quite hefty revisions to the rulebook regarding bodywork flexibility and, additionally, a lot of work by the engineers... to ensure our car is now better suited to slower circuits.

"Singapore will be interesting for all of us -- we'll not only get an idea of the speed of the Ferrari and Red Bull, but we'll get to see for the first time whether all our efforts over the past two months have helped put us back in the ballpark at high-downforce tracks."
