Chelsea start long road back to London in style

Seven years ago when Chelsea began the Roman Abramovic era at Zilina the Russian would hardly have expected Wednesday's 4-1 victory there to be another "first step" towards the Champions League title.

Abramovich's millions have transformed Chelsea from a promising Premier League team into trophy-laden aristocrats but until they lift Europe's ultimate club prize he will be forever frustrated.

Wednesday's captain John Terry was the only survivor from the team who triumphed 2-0 in a Champions League qualifying match in August 2003 and the gulf in class and resources on show that night has become a chasm.

The Londoners, who have won their first four league games and scored 17 goals in the process, looked completely untroubled as they cruised to a 3-0 halftime lead with two goals by Nicolas Anelka and one for Michael Essien.

Daniel Sturridge added the fourth three minutes after the restart with Tomas Oravec nabbing a consolation when Chelsea's attention was already wandering to their weekend appointment with Blackpool.

However, for Abramovich, and last season's league and FA Cup double-winning coach Carlo Ancelotti, the focus will remain like a laser on the Champions League final at Wembley in May.

This is Abramovich's eighth assault on the competition and having reached the semifinal four times in the last six, losing in the final in 2008, no other silverware will do.

Chelsea look well equipped to go all the way and Ancelotti used Wednesday's match to give some squad members a taste of the first team.

With striker Didier Drogba suspended, midfielder Frank Lampard and defender Ashley Cole rested, Chelsea still had more than enough firepower to continue their free-scoring start to the season.

Essien side-footed the opener after 13 minutes, Florent Malouda chipped a nice pass into the path of Anelka for the second after 24 and four minutes later he tapped in the rebound after Terry headed a corner against the bar.

Three minutes after the restart the impressive Yossi Benayoun sent Sturridge through for his first European goal.

Zilina had looked completely outclassed but gave the 11,000 crowd something for their money - ticket prices having been hiked by 700 percent - when Oravec almost burst a blood vessel to get a toe to what was looking like an Alex own goal.

Spartak Moscow and Olympique Marseille will prove Group F tests but Ancelotti, who threw on youngsters Patrick Van Aanholt Josh McEachran and Gael Kakuta during the second half, recognized a professional job well done.

"We started very well in the first half, we played fantastic football, the second half was different," he told reporters.

"I know sometimes there are difficult times, the opponent can come back in the game, but if I have to judge the performance I am very happy because it's not easy to win 4-1 away in the Champions League.

"The key was Anelka, he played a fantastic game. He created space, he had opportunities.”

Zilina coach Pavel Hapal accepted that the gulf in class was too wide.

"Chelsea showed their strength and we did not match this,” he said. “There were good combinations, we had chances, but the disparity was there."

"It was about players' speed, combination, strength this was the reason (we lost). It is a good lesson for us, we can see where soccer is heading but on the other hand I'm not satisfied."

Italy helps to preserve Hanoi’s Old Quarter

Italy, with its expertise in restoring ancient historical buildings and
artefacts, such as the city of Genoa, is ready to assist Hanoi to
restore and improve its Old Quarter.

Speaking at
a seminar on improving the role and efficiency of the local officials
who are responsible for managing Hanoi’s Old Quarter on September 15,
Cesare Bieller, head of the Political and Cultural Section at the
Italian Embassy in Hanoi, stressed that preserving the Old Quarter must
be a shared responsibility that includes the whole community and needs
to be carried out to improve living standards and economic efficiency.

According to leading architect Dao Ngoc Nghiem,
former Director of Hanoi’s Department of Architectural Planning, the Old
Quarter is extremely valuable to the local people, commerce, culture
and the city’s architecture.

Therefore, any
preservation must conform to the Government’s regulations and be
developed and managed in cooperation with local officials and the
public, he said.

Hanoi ’s old houses and
buildings reflect the city’s different architectural styles during each
period of its history so they need to be restored and preserved, he
added.

According to the Management Board for
Hanoi’s Old Quarter, which covers nearly 100ha and includes almost
1,000 old houses, it is now seriously run down due to the increasing
number of residents living in the area.

At
present, Hanoi is introducing measures to preserve and promote its
cultural value, as well as attempting to reduce the population to
minimise the negative impacts on the Old Quarter./.

Theatre compiles anthology

The Royal Hue Traditional Arts Theatre has completed an anthology of
traditional arts, including nha nhac (court music), tuong (classical
theatre) and royal dances, plus a profile of artists.

Theatre director Truong Tuan Hai said 20 practitioners of the traditional arts lived in Hue or its surrounds.

The anthology had been compiled from staff research and field trips to
meet artists who performed for members of the Nguyen dynasty, he said.

The research took more than a year and the invaluable material
collected was compiled into a 250-page profile of the artists and a
glossary of the works they perform.

It includes 22 90-minute tapes and 45 20-minute DVDs of their performances.

The artists surveyed include Tran Kich, who served the court in the
early 20th century, and helped record 30 pieces of royal music.

Although its roots can be traced to the Ho dynasty (1400-07), court
music reached its zenith at Hue's royal court during the Nguyen
dynasty from 1802 to 1945.

Various international
organisations have supported the city in preserving royal music. The
Republic of Korea recently helped remake bronze bells and stone
instruments, crafts that are still popular today.

The set
of bronze bells and stone instruments will be finished by the end of
this year and will be used in the Xa Tac worshipping ceremony dedicating
gods of land and agriculture at the beginning of next year and at the
Nam Giao worshipping ceremony dedicating heaven during the Hue Festival
next year.

Between 2005-08, the Japan Trust Fund, through
UNESCO, gave 154,900 USD for a project to study, collect, store and
restore the court music.

This has helped the younger generation gain access to court music and introduce it to other regions and countries.

Court music was originally found in the courts of royalty and reserved
for annual ceremonies and special events such as coronations, funerals
and official receptions./.

Messi lights up first night as Inter toil

The world's best player Lionel Messi lit up the opening night of the Champions League for Barcelona although holders Inter Milan and Manchester United endured less than sparkling starts on Tuesday.

The Argentine, like last season, treated Europe's blue riband club competition as his personal playground, scoring two classy goals before missing a penalty as Barca recovered from an early shock to thrash visiting Panathinaikos 5-1 in Group D.

Inter took the lead but then had to come from behind to draw 2-2 at Dutch debutants Twente Enschede in Group A with the Italians losing forward Goran Pandev to a knee injury.

A much-changed Manchester United could find no way past obdurate Scottish visitors Rangers in Group C, drawing 0-0 in a game overshadowed by a serious ankle injury to Antonio Valencia.

The impish Messi bagged eight goals in the competition last season and judging by his display at the Nou Camp against an overwhelmed Greek side he will be aiming for double figures again, as Barca set about trying to reclaim the trophy.

Messi would have celebrated a hat-trick but for the second-half penalty save and he also rattled the goal frame before halftime as he resumed normal service after failing to hit the target at the World Cup finals.

David Villa, Pedro and Dani Alves also found the net for the irresistible Catalans who emphatically made up for their shock defeat by promoted Hercules in La Liga at the weekend.

"He is the best player in the world by some distance from the rest," said Barca coach Pep Guardiola. "It hurts him to miss and he has this amateur spirit of always wanting to play."

Own goal

Inter forward Diego Milito was not far behind fellow Argentine Messi in the Champions League goal charts last season but scored at the wrong end as they began the defense of their crown under new manager Rafael Benitez in jittery fashion.

Milito's own goal briefly left Inter 2-1 behind at Twente after Wesley Sneijder had given the Italians an early lead.

Samuel Eto'o spared his blushes with an equalizer but Inter had to settle for a point after a goalless second half.

"In the first half we deserved nothing,” former Liverpool coach Benitez, who faces a colossal task filling the shoes of Jose Mourinho, told reporters.

“We opened the scoring but after that we faced serious problems.”

The other game in Group A also ended 2-2, Tottenham Hotspur wasting a two-goal lead against Bundesliga side Werder Bremen on their first appearance in the European Cup since 1962.

Manchester United struggled to find inspiration in their goalless draw with Rangers and Valencia's misfortune capped a poor night for manager Alex Ferguson, whose decision to make 10 changes to the side that drew with Everton on Saturday misfired.

Wayne Rooney did return after being left out at the weekend as he deals with marital problems but the England striker, like his team mates, huffed and puffed against the massed ranks of Rangers' eight-man defense without making a serious dent.

Winger Valencia fell to the turf after a seemingly innocuous tackle in the 63rd minute and manager Alex Ferguson told Sky Sports he feared the Ecuadorean had broken his ankle.

Fiery Baprism

Turkish side Bursaspor were given a baptism of fire against Valencia, losing 4-0 at home in Group C's other game.

In Group B, Benfica and Olympique Lyon started with victories, neither of them particularly convincing.

Benfica beat Israel's Hapoel Tel Aviv 2-0 and last year's semifinalists Lyon chiseled out a 1-0 win over Schalke 04, who played the second half with 10 men after central defender Benedikt Hoewedes was harshly sent off before the break.

Russian champions Rubin Kazan, who stunned Barcelona last season and will face them again later in Group D, were beaten 1-0 at Denmark's FC Copenhagen.

Wednesday marks Mourinho's Champions League bow with his new team Real Madrid hosting Martin Jol's Ajax Amsterdam while last season's runners-up Bayern Munich host AS Roma as the opening games in the competition continue with matches in groups E-H.
