Vietnam volleyball team overcomes NZ in women's opener

Vietnam beat New Zealand 3-0 in its opener at the 15th Asian
Junior Women's volleyball Championship taking place in HCM City 's
Phan Dinh Phung Gymnasium.

Vietnam overcame a poor start to defeat inexperienced New Zealand 25-23, 25-21-25-14.

Vietnam 's service errors and unsuccessful spikes allowed New Zealand
, who started the match in good form, to lead Vietnam14-3 in the first
set, but the hosts got back in the game, winning 10 points in a row,
taking full advantage of New Zealand 's defensive errors.

With the scores tied 23-all, Wills Kelsie's and Quigley Danielle's unsuccessful spikes gave Vietnam the first set.

The second set repeated the first, with New Zealand going ahead,
before Vietnam clawed their way back to win 25-21 thanks to Duong
Thi Nhan's powerful spikes.

The third set saw Vietnam
dominating the game with Nhan's excellent performance making the
difference, with the hosts eventually going on to easily win the set
25-14 to secure their first victory at the championship.

The win helped Vietnam temporarily top the group and opened the door for the team to qualify for the quarter-finals.

They will play Kazakhstan today./.

Middlesbrough trip to North Korea revives 1966 memories

The unlikely sporting link between English town Middlesbrough and North Korea will be renewed this week when a team of women footballers head off into the unknown for a week-long visit.

Middlesbrough Ladies have been invited to play two matches in Pyongyang against local club sides with team manager Marrie Wieczorek expecting her players to make a bigger stir there than they do back home on England's north-east coast.

"At home we get crowds of 30 or 40, and they're all family, but from what I've heard we could be playing in a stadium that holds 35,000. Pride is a huge thing in North Korea and I expect that my girls will be playing in front of more fans than they would have ever experienced before," Wieczorek told Reuters.

"I'm sure they will treat our visit as a showcase occasion to the outside world.

“I imagine that their pride in their country means they will be really up for our visit and trying hard to win.”

North Korea and Middlesbrough have been inexorably linked since 1966 when the North Koreans famously beat Italy during the World Cup finals at the club's former Ayresome Park stadium.

"You don't hear much about Middlesbrough in this country, but in North Korea it's linked with one of their greatest sporting moments," said Wieczorek. "I think it's the only reason we are being invited into the country because of our links with North Korea.”

“I've heard from the British Embassy that the people in the North Korea Ministry of Sport speak very warmly of Middlesbrough."

While in Pyongyang Middlesbrough's players, aged between 17 and 25, and coaching staff will meet the surviving members of the 1966 squad, including Pak Do Ik, the scorer of the winning goal against Italy. They will also coach schoolchildren.

"Everyone is so excited about the trip. It's such a fantastic opportunity for all of us to visit a country that we could never have imagined getting to see.”

A few local rules will have to be obeyed though.

Sorry Woods fails to make Tour Championship

There is still plenty of golf ahead for Tiger Woods this year but his PGA Tour season came to an early end at the BMW Championship on Sunday after he failed to earn a spot in the Tour Championship.

For the first time in 15-years, Woods finishes his PGA Tour season without claiming a single title but the world number one at least managed to exit on a positive note firing three birdies on a bogey-free back nine for a final round one-under 70.

The back-nine charge, however, was far too little, too late to earn Woods a place in the elite 30-man field for the lucrative season-ending Tour Championship in Atlanta.

His one-under total of 283 left him in a tie for 15th and well out of the fifth place finish he needed to advance to the finale.

It marks the third time in five years that Woods has not played the Tour Championship. He missed the event in 2008 while recuperating from knee surgery and in 2006 when he qualified but decided to end his season early.

Instead of making the trip to East Lake, Woods will have two weeks off to work on his inconsistent game and prepare for next month's Ryder Cup showdown with Europe at Celtic Manor.

"That's just the way it is," shrugged Woods, when asked if he was disappointed not to be headed to Atlanta. "I didn't play well early in the year and I didn't play well in the middle of the year.

" I've played better than I have all this year, but it is what it is.

“I didn't qualify and since I'm at home it gives me two weeks to practice and prepare."

Woods has plenty to occupy his time as he struggles to put his personal life back together after scandalous divorce and continues to work on a swing overhaul.

Aside from the Ryder Cup, Woods will have other opportunities to test the progress of his revamped swing with events in Australia and China as well as his own tournament on his late season schedule.

During another rollercoaster week at Cog Hill, Woods displayed only occasional flashes of the supreme ability that carried him to 14 major titles.

There are signs, however, that he is not far away from returning to his old dominating form, according to world number two Phil Mickelson, who was paired with his great rival during Sunday's final round.

"I think his game is like inches from being there," said Mickelson. "His speed is back, he's solid, very close.

"He hit a lot of good shots there coming in, he made a couple of bogeys and followed up with a number of birdies there toward the end.

"You can tell that his game is like inches from turning because his speed is back and his putter looks great.”

Real Madrid look to sparkle against Ajax

Real Madrid are under pressure to entertain their demanding fans at home to Ajax Amsterdam in the Champions League on Wednesday after impatient whistling greeted Saturday's uninspiring 1-0 La Liga win over Osasuna.

The frustration of the Real faithful, still waiting to see the fruits of US$448 million of investment, was plain when the players and new coach Jose Mourinho trooped off after a goalless first half.

Captain Iker Casillas asked for patience and forward Cristiano Ronaldo said it was not always possible to put on a show.

"I don't think all the fans were whistling, it was only a minority," the Portuguese international, who cost Real a record $120.6 million last year, told a news conference on Monday.

"It would be better if people helped motivate us, but everyone is entitled to express themselves how they want," he added.

"We can't always play brilliantly to entertain the fans and sometimes you have to try to lift the players.

"All of us in the stadium want the best for Real Madrid and together was can make a team that is more feared at home."

Poor run

Real's unprecedented spending spree is chiefly aimed at ending a poor Champions League run over the past six seasons, during which the nine-time winners have failed to progress beyond the last 16.

President Florentino Perez told Real's general assembly on Sunday he would not rest until a 10th European title had been secured.

Perez described Mourinho, who led Inter Milan to three major trophies last season including the Champions League, as "a born winner."

"We have not spared any effort to put Real Madrid back in its rightful place and in the best shape to achieve a great goal, the real challenge of winning a 10th Champions League," Perez said.

Ajax will have other ideas on their first appearance in Europe's elite club competition since 2005-06, although the four-times winners will miss their captain, the prolific Uruguay striker Luis Suarez who is suspended.

Suarez netted 35 goals in the Dutch championship last season and said it hurt not being able to play in the opening Group G clash.

"I'll save my goals for the return match in Amsterdam," he said in an interview published in Spanish sports daily Marca.

The inexperience of some of the Ajax players may count against them, he cautioned.

"Ajax is an attacking team but one that can also play deep if the match requires it," Suarea said. "If we go to the Bernabeu with a suicidal plan we could lose easily."

Serie A side AC Milan, the seven-times winners, and French club Auxerre complete Group G.

Probable teams:

Real Madrid: 1-Iker Casillas; 4-Sergio Ramos, 2-Ricardo Carvalho, 3-Pepe, 12-Marcelo; 14-Xabi Alonso, 24-Sami Khedira; 9-Karim Benzema, 23-Mesut Ozil, 7-Cristiano Ronaldo; 20-Gonzalo Higuain.

Ajax: 1-Maarten Stekelenburg; 2-Gregory van der Wiel, 3-Toby Alderweireld, 23-Oleguer, 5-Vurnon Anita; 20-Demy de Zeeuw, 10-Siem de Jong, 6-Eyong Enoh; 7-Miralem Sulejmani, 9-Mounir El Hamdaoui, 11-Urby Emanuelson.
