Vietnam volleyball team overcomes NZ in women's opener

Vietnam beat New Zealand 3-0 in its opener at the 15th Asian
Junior Women's volleyball Championship taking place in HCM City 's
Phan Dinh Phung Gymnasium.


Vietnam overcame a poor start to defeat inexperienced New Zealand 25-23, 25-21-25-14.


Vietnam 's service errors and unsuccessful spikes allowed New Zealand
, who started the match in good form, to lead Vietnam14-3 in the first
set, but the hosts got back in the game, winning 10 points in a row,
taking full advantage of New Zealand 's defensive errors.


With the scores tied 23-all, Wills Kelsie's and Quigley Danielle's unsuccessful spikes gave Vietnam the first set.


The second set repeated the first, with New Zealand going ahead,
before Vietnam clawed their way back to win 25-21 thanks to Duong
Thi Nhan's powerful spikes.


The third set saw Vietnam
dominating the game with Nhan's excellent performance making the
difference, with the hosts eventually going on to easily win the set
25-14 to secure their first victory at the championship.


The win helped Vietnam temporarily top the group and opened the door for the team to qualify for the quarter-finals.


They will play Kazakhstan today./.
