Nineteen-year-old Japanese Moto2 rider Shoya Tomizawa has died after a crash during Sunday's San Marino Grand Prix, the second death in the sport in two events.

Doctor Claudio Costa, part of the motorcycling world championship's medical team, told reporters the news.

Riders in the premier MotoGP class were also informed after their race, won by Dani Pedrosa.

"I found out now, when things like this happen nothing else matters," world champion Valentino Rossi told Mediaset television. "He was a lovely guy, it was a horrible accident."

Suter's Tomizawa was travelling at full speed when he fell off before a corner and was hit violently by the bikes of Alex De Angelis and Scott Redding, who both also tumbled but looked relatively unhurt.

A 13-year-old also died in a minor race before the Indianapolis MotoGP in the sport's last grand prix in August.

Motorcycling has always been among motorsport's most dangerous pursuits given riders are often thrown from their bikes and run the risk of hitting objects or being struck by other riders.

Huge speeds

"You forget sometimes how easily something like this can happen. Sometimes our sport is just too dangerous," MotoGP rider Andrea Dovizioso said.

Moto2, the new name for the former 250cc category below MotoGP, still generates huge speeds and officials said they decided to continue with the race after the crash because of the fear of other accidents if a red flag was suddenly shown.

They added that Tomizawa was alive when he was taken from the track and rushed to a local hospital on Italy's east coast. He was pronounced dead soon after.

The official news of his death had not filtered through before the start of the MotoGP race so the event went ahead.

Rossi, who suffered a broken leg in an accident before the Italian Grand Prix in June, led riders in a tribute to another dead Japanese colleague Daijiro Kato earlier in the week in a ceremony at Misano.

Kato, who lived in the Misano area, died after an accident at the Japanese Grand Prix in 2003.

Rossi has worked hard with other riders to try to make the sport safer but has said there is a limit to how much they can do.

Tiger Woods stayed alive in the PGA Tour's playoffs when he compiled a tidy final round at the Deutsche Bank Championship on Monday.

Woods birdied three of the final four holes for a three-under-par 68 in pleasant conditions at the Boston TPC.

He finished at 10-under 274, which should place him around 12th place at the end of the day.

Woods also ensured he would be among the top 70 players on the FedEx Cup points list to advance to this week's BMW Championship in suburban Chicago.

He will go into the third of four playoff events at about 50th place on the list.

"I'm very satisfied,” Woods, referring to his swing changes with coach Sean Foley, told NBC television. “The things we've been working on are starting to come together.”

"I started feeling more comfortable and I'm able to fix it on the golf course.

“That's the biggest thing, when I hit a couple of bad shots I'm able to rectify it.

"Today I was trying to shoot about 62 and I thought that would have been a pretty good number but I didn't do that."

Meanwhile, Briton Luke Donald and American Charley Hoffman shared the lead more than halfway through the final round.

They were 18-under after 11 holes, while overnight leader Jason Day was one stroke behind after 10 holes, with a further three-shot gap to Australian Geoff Ogilvy and American Brandt Snedeker.

Rooney in Switzerland for England qualifier

Wayne Rooney travelled to Switzerland on Monday for England's Euro 2012 qualifier despite being engulfed by lurid tabloid reports about his private life.

The 24-year-old Manchester United star was reported to be distraught by weekend revelations detailing his liaisons with a prostitute while his wife was pregnant, but nevertheless remain in the squad for Tuesday's game.

Local media reports showed Rooney boarding the plane with his England team-mates as they left for Basel on Monday.

The Times newspaper reported earlier that manager Fabio Capello would make a series of checks on Rooney's state of mind before assessing whether he was in the right frame of mind to line up against the Swiss.

The newspaper cited unidentified sources as saying Rooney was "devastated" by the impact the reports had had on his family. The Daily Mirror reported wife Coleen as being "torn apart" by the revelations.

The Times reported sources within the England camp as saying that while Rooney had trained on Sunday, he had clearly been affected by the reports and distracted by his attempts to resolve the issue.

The turmoil surrounding England's best player has come at an inconvenient time for Capello, who had been left purring on Friday after Rooney played a starring role in his team's 4-0 defeat of Bulgaria in their Group G opener.

England midfielder James Milner declined to be drawn on his team-mate's state of mind but said the squad was firmly behind their talisman and wanted him to take to the field against Switzerland.

"I think you want the best players out on the field and he's obviously one of them. He showed that the other night," Milner said. "He's a top, top player and you want to put out the strongest team possible."

The Rooney revelations dominated both the front and back pages of British newspapers on Monday, with several commentators seizing on the affair as the explanation for the striker's poor performances at the World Cup.

Daily Mirror columnist Oliver Holt said Rooney's "knowledge and worry" about the impact the revelations would have on his family had been hanging over the striker in South Africa.

"It is the most convincing explanation for why the Wayne Rooney we saw in South Africa was so far removed from the player who has grown into England's most exciting talent since Paul Gascoigne," he wrote.

Other newspapers speculated that the affair would hamper the FA's attempts to find a new sponsor for the national team, with businesses wary of linking their brands to a squad of players involved in a series of sex scandals.

However Rooney received some good news on Monday when sponsor Nike confirmed they were standing by the player.

"We have worked with Wayne for seven years and he continues to be a Nike athlete," a spokesman for Nike said. "This is a private matter for Wayne and his family and we have no further comment to make at this time."

HA NOI — Viet Nam is confident it will get the go-ahead to host several major sporting events over the next 10 years. The biggest will be the 18th Asian Games (ASIAD).

Hosting the four-yearly games, the biggest in the Asian sporting calendar, brings not only prestige but also an economic boost.

The 18th edition will kick off in 2019 and will be a hotly contested affair.

The Vietnamese Government sent its application to the Olympics Council of Asia (OCA) in March. Following Malaysia's withdrawal over costs, just Hong Kong, the United Arabia Emirates, India, the Philippines, Chinese Taipei and Viet Nam are in the running. Viet Nam considers India to be the strongest contender.

"[Malaysia's withdrawal] is good news for us. Now our main rival is India – the others are unlikely to be successful," said Hoang Vinh Giang, general secretary of the Viet Nam Olympic Committee.

In India's favour is its superior infrastructure, which is a major consideration for the OCA, Giang said.

"However, Viet Nam's successful hosting of the third Asian Indoor Games in 2009 will be to our advantage. In my opinion, the stability of the political situation in the country will play a major role in the OCA's final decision," Giang said.

Giang said the biggest challenge facing Viet Nam is the huge cost involved in hosting the games.

Malaysia withdrew from the race because the government felt the nation could not afford the 1.6 billion Malaysian ringit (US$517 million) cost of hosting the games. Furthermore, that figure does not include construction costs.

However, Giang said the Government would not have allowed the committee's bid to go ahead if it had felt the nation could not afford the cost involved.

If successful, Giang said eight years would be ample time for Viet Nam to get ready for the games.

"Many difficulties await. Eight years is not a long time to get ready for the games, but our success in hosting recent tournaments and festivals has raised Viet Nam's profile.

"The Vietnamese people will be delighted if the country hosts the 18th ASIAD. For that reason, I believe if we host the 18th ASIAD it would be a great success," Giang said.

The 16th ASIAD takes place in China's Guangzhou province this November, while the 17th will be held in Incheon, South Korea, in 2014.

Viet Nam, whose strongest events are martial arts, chess, sepak takraw (rattan ball kicking) and petanque, is also hoping to host the Southeast Asian Games and the Asian Beach Games in 2016, and the Indoor Martial Arts Games two years later. — VNS

Navibank Saigon secure a place in V-League next season

HCMC – V-League team Navibank Saigon beat First Division team Quang Ninh Coal 2-0 in their V-League relegation play-off at Chi Lang Stadium in the central coast city of Danang on Sunday to secure a place in the top league next season.

The two teams started the game slowly and played aggressively, hoping for their opponent’s mistakes but they both could not change the status quo. The first half ended scoreless despite their players created some attacks to their opponent’s defense line.

The game was the different story after the break. Navibank Saigon dominated the game as their forwarders put more pressure on Quang Ninh Coal defending line. Nguyen Van Khai surprisingly opened the score for the V-League team in the 61st minute following an error from Quang Ninh Coal keeper.

Navibank Saigon continued to dominate the game with many opportunities and Leandro De Oliveira finalized the game at 2-0 just five minutes later.

Both Quang Ninh Coal’s defensive and offensive moves were strong in the dying minutes while Navibank Saigon played defensively and relied on rare counter attacks aimed to protect the score.

Despite strong attacks, Quang Ninh Coal players failed to convert any opportunities into goals while Navibank Saigon succeeded in controlling the game.

The V-League – PetroVietnam Gas 2010 finished two weeks ago. Hanoi T&T won the V-League title, Haiphong were runners-up and Dong Thap were third while bottom-placed team Nam Dinh dropped out of the V-League and Navibank Saigon secured the play-off ticket.

In the First-Division championship that finished at the same time, Hanoi ACB, who claimed the First Division title, won promotion to V-League next year and second-placed Quang Ninh Coal secured the play-off position. Tien Giang relegated to the Second Division in the next season

Next season the V-League will have 14 teams and the First Division will have the same number of teams, one more than now. The new season will begin in December with the Super Cup match when V-League champions Hanoi T&T will meet National Cup winners Song Lam Nghe An.

German reunification on screen in Vietnam

German reunification on screen in Vietnam

Seven films on the reunification of the former East and West Germany
will be focus of the “60 years of German cinematography” programme in
Hanoi from September 6-12.

A highlight is “Germany,
Germany” by director Peter Fleischmann, documenting with impressive
snapshots the mood in the former East and West Germany during the first
year after the collapse of the Berlin wall.

In the
film, the German film director speaks with workers, public employees,
pensioners and the unemployed and listens as they describe their
feelings on the changes and raise their concerns about the future.

Fleischmann is one of the “Jungen Wilden” (wild young ones), who
influenced German cinema in the 60s and 80s. His films take a critical
view of society and are concerned with the problem of forced
assimilation of the individual into an uncomprehending environment. He
was honoured in 2010 at the Munich Film Festival with a lifetime
achievement award.

The overall series on 60 years of
Germany cinema takes place bimonthly, featuring each decade of the
Germany cinema history through the most notable films of that decade.

The programme is provided by the Geothe Institute within the framework of “Germany Year in Vietnam”.

Audiences are offered chances to enjoy these fascinating movies free every evening at the Goethe Institute./.

Nadal, Clijsters move on at US Open

Andy Murray was a major casualty at the US Open on Sunday but Rafael Nadal stormed through as did Kim Clijsters and Venus Williams in the women's tournament.

The 23-year-old Scot was out of sorts against Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka and his challenge to Nadal and Roger Federer ended in a crushing 6-7 (3/7), 7-6 (7/4), 6-3, 6-3 loss.

"He played better than me. There's not a whole lot more to it," the defeated fourth seed said.

"He had a chance to win the first set; didn't take it. I had a chance to win the second set; didn't take it. I just struggled from then on."

Nadal led a Spanish charge with five of their number making it through to the eight fourth-round slots available in the top half of the draw.

The others were eighth seed Fernando Verdasco, 10th seed David Ferrer, 23rd seed Feliciano Lopez and the unseeded Tommy Robredo.

Nadal takes on Lopez and Verdasco goes up against Ferrer in the first quarter, making it certain there will be at least one Spaniard in the semi-finals.

The top seed was never troubled against France's Gilles Simon, winning 6-4, 6-4, 6-2, and he has yet to drop a set in three matches.

"I am in fourth round. That's good news for me - without losing a set - but there remains a lot to do. I am happy where I am, but is only fourth round," Nadal said.

Others through to the last 16 in the top half were US hope Sam Querrey, who defeated Nicolas Almagro of Spain 6-3, 6-4, 6-4, and Russia's Mikhail Youzhny who edged American John Isner 6-4, 6-7 (7/9), 7-6 (7/5), 6-4.

Wawrinka next plays Querrey and Youzhny takes on Robredo.

In the women's tournament, defending champion Kim Clisters won the billed match of the day, trouncing former world number one Ana Ivanovic 6-2, 6-1, a victory that was her 18th in a row at Flushing Meadows.

Clijsters was the first player through to the quarter-finals and there she will face Australian fifth seed Samantha Stosur, who ousted Russian 12th seed Elena Dementieva 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (7/2).

The Belgian second seed said she quickly adapting to the breezy morning conditions on the Arthur Ashe Centre Court.

"With the wind you have to adjust," she said. "I started moving forward, dictating the points better. I was playing good defense as well."

The other quarter-final in the bottom half of the draw sees French Open champion Francesca Schiavone go up against third seed and former champion Venus Williams.

Williams, the last woman to win back-to-back titles here in 2001, saw off a strong early challenge from Israeli 16th seed Shahar Peer before winning 7-6 (7/3), 6-3.

Schiavone topped Russian 2Oth seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-3, 6-0 with her finest display of tennis since winning her maiden Grand Slam title in Paris in June.

Playing against Venus Williams will be a much different prospect for the Italian, however, as she has lost all seven matches they have played to date.

The American, though, said she would not be over-confident.

"We've had some tough matches. She's definietly had some chances to win against me," Williams said. "Obviously her game is better than ever now."
