HA NOI — International Grandmaster Le Quang Liem took the sole lead at the Russian International Chess Festival (Aeroflot Open) after seventh round play yesterday in Moscow.

Liem has scored six points after seven matches and has remained in the top position in the tournament since the third round on Friday.

The defending champion, Liem, defeated Russian Mikhail Kobalia, 32, who was European Youth Chess Champion in 1994. The victory made Liem the only competitor here not to suffer a loss in the tournament, which follows the Swiss system's nine-round format.

His two draws were against Evgeny Tomashevsky of Russia and Rustam Kasimdzhanov of Uzbekistan. Tomashevsky triumphed at the 10th European Championships in 2009 while Kasimdzhanov shocked the chess world by winning the FIDE world chess championship title, beating a string of world-class players.

In their previous match, Liem drew with Kasimdzhanov and lost his Asian Games title to the Uzbek last December.

The HCM City-born Liem will next meet Ivan Cheparinov of Bulgaria who has earned five points and is among seven players on five points, very close to Liem in the ranking table.

The winner of the tournament will bring home 20,000 euros (US$29,300) and get the chance to participate in a round-robin super tournament in Dortmund, Germany, in late July. The final match is this Friday. — VNS

Thien triumphs at junior tournament

BINH DUONG — Viet Nam's Nguyen Hoang Thien has lifted the Becamex Cup by outclassing Makus Kerner of Estonia in two straight sets to win the 2010 Viet Nam International Junior Tennis Championship.

At Binh Duong near HCM City yesterday the top-seeded Thien broke Kerner's service in the fourth and sixth games of the first set to win 6-2.

All the fight seemed to leave the fourth seed in the second set as Thien took it 6-0 to win the match in just 55 minutes.

"Because Kerner is tall and strong, I used low balls to prevent his powerful forehands," Thien said.

He will next play in a Grade 3 junior tournament in Malaysia next week before going on to the 16th Asian Games in Guangzhou, China, next month.

"I have been out of tennis for six months because of injury. Now I am fit and hope to earn more points by the end of the year to improve my ranking," he said.

It is the 15-year-old's second title in two weeks after winning a similar tournament in Bac Lieu province.

The 30 points he has got from the tournament will see his ranking rise from the current 369th.

Vietnamese pair Nguyen Ngoc Minh and Phan Thi Thanh Binh squandered three match points to lose to top-seeded Anna Clarice Patrimonio of the Philippines and Nadya Syarifah of Indonesia in the final.

Marseille plan to take legal action against De Jong

Olympique Marseille plan to take legal action against Manchester City midfielder Nigel De Jong for breaking Hatem Ben Arfa’s leg in a Premier League clash last weekend, the president of the Ligue 1 club said on Sunday.

Marseille forward Ben Arfa, who was loaned to Newcastle United during the close season, had his fibula and shinbone broken in a tackle by De Jong and is expected to be out of action for several months.

“We will file a claim against De Jong. We have to get rid of this type of individual from European pitches,” OM president Jean-Claude Dassier told French TV channel TF1 on Sunday, without elaborating.

De Jong escaped punishment at the time but Netherlands coach Bert van Marwijk left him out of the Dutch squad for their Euro 2012 qualifiers against Sweden and Moldova.

The player also attracted criticism in July’s World Cup final against Spain for kicking Xabi Alonso in the chest. De Jong received a yellow card for the challenge.

Women’s 100m champion fails doping test

Commonwealth Games women’s 100 meters gold medalist Osayemi Oludamola has tested positive for a banned stimulant, Games Federation chief Mike Fennell said on Monday.

The 24-year-old has been suspended but will keep her gold medal until a hearing later Monday after her B sample has been tested.

“Any positive test, whether it is in a high-profile event or not, is something that is very much regretted because we all are striving for clean Games, clean sports and clean competitions, said Fennell.

The Nigerian took gold after Australian Sally Pearson, who crossed the line first in Thursday’s race, was disqualified for a false start three hours after the finish.

VN expect tournament triumph

HCM CITY — Viet Nam are hopeful of winning an international under-23 football tournament that begins in HCM City today to commemorate Ha Noi's millennium.

"We have been training for three weeks [for] the 16th Asian Games in Guangzhou, China, next November," Nguyen Van Sy, assistant coach of the team, told a conference yesterday.

"Although this is an invitational tournament, it is very important for us in the build-up to the Asian Games. Moreover, we will try our best to win the trophy to celebrate the millennium of Ha Noi."

Iran will play Singapore in the opening game at 3.45pm today and it will be followed by the much-awaited match between Viet Nam and Malaysia, who edged Viet Nam in the 25th SEA Games final last December.

Viet Nam have eight players from that line-up which lost by one goal. Malaysia have made seven changes.

Viet Nam, with three players aged above 23, including striker Nguyen Anh Duc and goalkeeper Bui Tan Truong, like some of the other teams, are the better team on paper, but Sy rates Malaysia highly under the coach K. Rajagopal.

"We gathered only on September 21," Rajagopal said.

"Winning the SEA Games title was in the past and we are looking forward. We do not have any goals and will just go out there and play our best."

Iran, the only team from West Asia, are the youngest in the fray but have an advantage over the other teams in terms of height and physical strength.

"We have limited knowledge of the participating teams but the tournament will give us a good opportunity to acquaint ourselves with East Asian teams," Hamzeh Khosro, a member of the Iranian coaching staff, said.

"All the players are under 21. We will do our best and hope to have a good tournament."

Singapore have also made eight changes from the team that played at the SEA Games, including the drafting of two players aged above 23.

"Because the S-League is still in progress, we had some difficulty getting players," Singapore's assistant coach, Sundram Smoorthy, said.

"But we are happy to play good teams here and to see how our players perform."

The teams are allowed to field six substitutes in a match against the normal two.

The final will be played on October 2 at the Thong Nhat Stadium. The champions will walk away with a cash prize of US$20,000, the runner-up will get $10,000, and the third-placed team, $5,000. — VNS

Vietnam women set goal for beach volleyball Cup

Vietnam has set a top five spot as its goal at the international Tanimex Cup 2010 women's beach volleyball tournament.

Le Hoang Son, head of the beach volleyball section of the Vietnam
Volleyball Federation (VFV), said that at least one pairing has the
potential to make it to the tournament's top five in a sport that is
still at a nascent stage in the country.

Organisers
said at a press conference on September 22 in HCM City that 12 teams
from seven nations and territories including hosts Vietnam will take
part in the tournament held at the Ocean Park in Vung Tau City from
October 1-3.

Vietnam's two pairs are Truong Thi Yen
with Nguyen Thi Mai (team 1); and Phan Thi Cam Hong with Huynh Do Hong
Loan (team 2).

"With the quality of players this year, Yen and Mai should finish in the top five," said Son.

"The Chinese Taipei duo Kou Nai Han and Chang Hui Min are currently
one of the top pairs in Asia and will be strong contenders for the
title," Son said.

The tournament is organised by the
VFV and the Tan Binh Commercial Service Import Export Company (Tanimex)

Coach Giang quits Lam Son Thanh Hoa

Vu Truong Giang resigned as coach of Lam Son Thanh Hoa after a poor season with the team finishing third from bottom of the national football championship, V-League.

The team took only 31 points after 26 matches and only escaped relegation with a last-gasp play-off winning goal.

Giang who wanted to resign after just four matches was persuaded to continue with great support from the club management.

However, Giang failed to improve the team's form and his letter of resignation was accepted. — VNS

Lightweights throw in the towel at US Open

Novak Djokovic of Serbia reacts after defeating Philipp Petzschner of Germany during the US Open tennis tournament in New York, September 2, 2010

There was an old-fashioned fight at the US Open on Thursday but not the one tournament officials wanted to see.

Instead of happening on the court, the scuffle broke out in the upper deck, high above Arthur Ashe Stadium where Novak Djokovic and Philipp Petzschner were locked in their own battle.

Play stopped briefly as New York police handcuffed three rowdy fans and evicted them from Flushing Meadows.

The fracas in the stands came at the end of a day when some of the sport's heavyweights delighted in humbling lesser-known opponents in second round matches.

Each of the five featured matches on center court was decided in straight-sets. At times the quality of tennis was breathtaking and the crowds roared their approval, but it was rarely a fair contest.

Roger Federer's victim was Germany's Andreas Beck. He won the match 6-3 6-4 6-3 in one hour 41 minutes and even the Swiss master himself was impressed.

"It's the perfect start," he said. "I played Monday, had two days off.”

“I had another easy one physically today, and here I am in the third round feeling like I'm completely in the tournament."

Maria Sharapova was also in a hurry, belting Czech Iveta Benesova 6-1 6-2, but neither of the former champions could match the ruthless display from Caroline Wozniacki.

“Double bagel”

The Dane needed just 47 minutes to inflict the dreaded 6-0 6-0 "double bagel" on Taiwan's Chang Kai Chen and remain on course for a meeting with Russian Sharapova in the fourth round.

Russia's Vera Zvonareva, Wimbledon finalist this year, and Belgium's Yanina Wickmayer, semifinalist at the US Open last season, also registered easy wins on another steamy day when the Extreme Weather Policy was invoked as temperatures climbed past 91 degrees Fahrenheit (33 Celsius).

A year ago, Kim Clijsters was the mom hogging the spotlight at the US Open. This time it is Mother Nature.

Unrelenting heat and swirling winds have transformed the last grand slam of the year into a battle against the elements and now Hurricane Earl is approaching New York, threatening to dump gallons of rain on the city that never sleeps.

Petzschner landed a few blows on Djokovic but the world number three was too crafty for the German, winning 7-5 6-3 7-6 to meet James Blake in the next round.

Djokovic's fellow Serb Jelena Jankovic, the women's fourth seed, survived after being pushed to three sets by Mirjana Lucic.

Russian Nikolay Davydenko, however, was left punch-drunk after being hammered 6-3 6-4 6-2 by Frenchman Richard Gasquet.

"I don't know if I need to have a coach, a mental coach or if I need to go somewhere to change my brain," the sixth seed said.

The casualty rate among the seeds in the first four days of the championship has been almost as brutal as the baking heat with 22 making early exits, including six more Thursday.

Agnieszka Radwanska, Aravane Rezai and Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez were sent tumbling out of the women's draw.

Davydenko was the highest men's seed to fall and was joined at the exit by Thomaz Bellucci and Croatia's 11th seed Marin Cilic, upset 5-7 7-6 3-6 7-6 6-1 by Japan's Kei Nishikori.

Trick shot

For Federer it was business as usual in his pursuit of a 17th grand slam title but there was no repeat of the magical between-the-legs trick shot he played in his opening match.

"Tougher matches will only be coming up now, I guess," he said. "It's gonna be interesting to see how the Saturday conditions are going to be with the hurricane sort of moving in.”

“We'll see how that goes."

Djokovic produced a stunning backhand winner on Thursday that would make it on anyone's highlights reel but said he had no plans to try and replicate Federer's shot.

"I have something else between my legs," he told the center court crowd.

Wozniacki is looming as the favorite to win her first grand slam title after a flawless start to the tournament.

Promoted to top seed after world number one Serena Williams withdrew with a foot injury, Wozniacki won three lead-up tournaments and has carried her form into the US Open.

"When you're winning, you have that confidence," she said. "You go out on the court and you know what to do.”

“You're in your own bubble, that's what I'm aiming for."

Sharapova feels recent success can extend to US Open

Maria Sharapova, who has shot back up the rankings after a shoulder injury that almost ended her career, feels she is hitting her stride and has a chance to capture her second US Open title in four years.

After suffering a shoulder injury in 2008 that required surgery, the three-time grand slam winner spent several months on the sidelines and dropped as far as 126th in the rankings.

But Sharapova is now ranked 16th in the world heading into the August 30-September 12 tournament and said reaching the finals of two straight tournaments in recent weeks has convinced her she can snap a grand slam drought nearing three years.

"I feel like I'm getting there," Sharapova, who pulled out of the WTA tournament in Montreal last week with a heel injury, told Reuters.

"I've had great successful memories in New York as well as tough ones.”

“Having to miss it two years ago because of my shoulder and then coming back last year with pressure... well that wasn't easy," she added.

Sharapova has not won a grand slam since she triumphed at the Australian Open in 2009. Eight months after the victory, the 23-year-old had right shoulder surgery and was slow to find the form that once vaulted her to the number one ranking.

She lost in the August finals to Victoria Azarenka at the Stanford Classic and to defending US Open champion Kim Clijsters at the Cincinnati Open but is heartened by recent victories over top players.

Until late July, Sharapova had not beaten a player this season ranked in the top 25, but in the past month has toppled world number six Elena Dementieva and two-time grand slam victor Svetlana Kuznetsova.

Sharapova is counting on her recent form to help erase the memories from last year's US Open where she struggled with a reconstructed service motion and was upset by US teenager Melanie Oudin in the third round.

She has done away with her abbreviated service motion and has been serving at pre-surgery speeds during recent tournaments where she has shown glimpses of her former self.

While Sharapova said Wimbledon is her favorite tournament, she is looking forward to returning to the bright lights of New York for the US Open, which she won in 2006.

"In New York it's all about the buzz, the craziness, the rivalries and the night matches," Sharapova said. "It's exhilarating, I want to perform my best at the Open and peak there."
