Hungarian wins men's race at windsurfing competition

Csiga Somoggrati from Hungary won first prize in the men's division at the 12th Fun Cup international windsurfing competition which wrapped up at Mui Ne Beach in the central coastal province of Binh Thuan on Saturday.

Guillot Christophe and Vila Remi from France took the second and third places, respectively.

In the women's division, Manianne Kaplas from Finland ranked first, followed by Lucy Adillo Maher from Australia and Deborah Khoo from Singapore.

The competition attracted 31 windsurfers, including six women, from 11 countries.

The Fun Cup is an annual slalom windsurfing race that has been organised by Jibe's Beach Club since 2001. Last year, Cyril Moussilmani took top prize, American Jimmy Diaz came second and Chris Pressler of Austria finished third.

A week after the Fun Cup, the 2011 Viet Nam PWA Grand Slam world windsurfing tournament will be organised from February 25 to March 5 at the same location.

Ha Noi to host Spring Cup tennis event at indoor venue

The Spring Cup tennis event will take place at the Ha Noi-based Indoor Athletics Palace on March 5-6.

Organisers www.vntennis.net expect the participation of more than 200 tennis players who will compete in men's and women's doubles.

The organisers said the VND100 million (US$4,500) event has attracted leading amateur tennis players from throughout the north.

Top high-jumper Bang to compete for HCM City

High jump national record holder Nguyen Duy Bang of Ben Tre will sign for HCM City athletics club this week.

Bang won one gold, two silvers and one bronze medal in four Southeast Asian Games in succession.

Nguyen Trung Hinh, general secretary of HCM City's Athletics Federation, said, "The city will create all conditions for him to train, compete and study."

Bang is currently a second-year student at the HCM City Sports Teachers College. — VNS

Vietnamese teen star to compete in Australian Open

Nguyen Hoang Thien has earned a berth in the Australian Open junior category which starts on January 24 in Melbourne as he jumped from 323 to 212 in the International Tennis Federation junior rankings announced January 3.

16-year-old tennis player, who is the first Vietnamese to compete at one of the four grand slams, will have to beat 63 other contestants in the tough tournament from January 19 to be among the 8 best players competing in the final round from 24th.

Thien has set a target of entering the world’s top 200 young tennis players this year.

He will warm up for the Australian Open by taking part in the Loy Yang Traralgon International from January 15-20 in Traralgon, Australia.

Also at this competion, he used to win the championsip title of Group V and advance into the semi final of Group III.

Australian Open is an annual event organized by the International Tennis Federation.

It consists of both men's and women's singles and doubles draws as well as a mixed doubles event.

There is also singles and doubles events for both boys and girls (players under 18) and for tennis players on wheelchairs.

Thien targets higher ranking

Nguyen Hoang Thien hopes to break into the top 100 junior tennis players rankings after winning two straight titles during the past two weeks.

Thien took home the title at the U18 ITF's Becamex Binh Duong Cup on Friday and won another tournament in Bac Lieu Province.

Thien, who is ranked 369th in the world's junior tennis standings, will compete with the national team for the first time at the 16th Asian Games which will be held in Guangzhou, China in November.

The young athlete will compete at the ITF's group 3 tournament against Malaysian tennis players.

Viet Nam beat India 3-1 in friendly

Viet Nam's Olympic team came from behind to beat India 3-1 during their friendly match on Saturday in New Dehli.

Balwant Singh scored for India nine minutes into the match. Ngoc Dieu responded with a goal to even the score during the first half.

Coach Phan Thanh Hung's players dominated the second half with Dieu scoring another goal during the 56th minute. Striker Nguyen Anh Duc scored the final goal in the match.

The Vietnamese team will compete in a friendly tournament in Bangkok from October 27-31 before participating in the Asian Games.

Quyen signs with Song Lam Nghe An

Former national star Pham Van Quyen has signed a new contract with Song Lam Nghe An, despite having his name tarnished during a match fixing scandal.

Quyen's new contract is for three years but allows him to play for the club until his retirement. In effect, the player has a life-contract with his team, who warmly welcomed his return after a four-year ban for match fixing. His current contract will end by the end of this year.

Quyen was called up for the national team in preparation for the AFF Suzuki Cup 2010 but suffered an injury that resulted in a poor performance during the last season. — VNS
