Team leaves for opening ceremony in Guangzhou

The major contingent of Vietnam 's competitors in the 16th ASIAD, in
Guangzhou , China , left on Nov. 11 to join the opening of Asia 's
biggest sports festival on Nov. 12.


They include badminton, billiards and snooker, chess, weightlifting and table tennis and volleyball contestants.


The contestants will join football and shooting teams who arrived before opening ceremony.


Swimmers, judo and wushu martial artists, dancers and separk takraw players will arrive in the city from training abroad.


Vietnam 's 260 competitors will contest 27 of 42 sports and have set themselves the target of at least four gold medals.


The Vietnam flag was hoisted at the athletes village on Nov. 11.
The team, the 36th delegation to arrive for the Games, has registered
150 participants for the ASIAD demonstration at the opening ceremony
with volleyball player Ngo Van Kieu carrying the national flag.


Weigh lifter Hoang Anh Tuan is expected to open the medal count for
Vietnam ; his 56kg category will start and finish on Nov. 13.


The weight lifter won a silver medal – a first for Vietnam – at Beijing Olympics./.

Vietnam film week opens in Germany

A Vietnamese film week opened in Magdeburg city of the Sachsen-Anhalt
state on Oct. 14 as part of the Vietnam Year in Germany in 2010.


Addressing the opening ceremony, Vietnamese charge d’affaires Bui Ngoc
Toan stressed the importance of the film week which takes place in the
year Vietnam and Germany celebrate their 35 th anniversary of
diplomatic ties.


The event, which features 10 Vietnamese
well-known films, including Doi Cat (Life of Sand), Dung Dot (Don’t
Burn), Song trong so hai (Living in Fear) and Chuyen cua Pao (Pao’s
Storty), will tell Germany’s audience about Vietnam’s culture as well as
the Vietnamese people’s normal life.


Burkhart
Fieber, who is in charge of international cooperation, European issues
and communications of the Sachsen-Anhalt state spoke highly of the sound
cooperation between Vietnam and the state, especially in economy and
education.


He also highly appreciated the integration by Vietnamese community living in Sachsen-Anhalt.


Visitors to the opening ceremony had chance to learn about Vietnamese
landscape, people and culture through short films and documents
introduced by the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism as well as
enjoyed Vietnamese dishes and traditional music./.

Doves released as Hanoi celebrates birthday

A thousand doves, the symbol of peace, were released at the opening
ceremony of the Thang Long-Hanoi millennium anniversary celebrations on
October 1.


The owner of the doves is Pham Tai Thu, who was born in the central
province of Quang Nam. Thu started a business in the Central
Highlands city of Da Lat growing orchids and later became famous for
his flowers, which have been presented to several central provinces
and Ho Chi Minh City .


He first started to raise birds in 1998, breeding from Vietnamese, French, Thai and Japanese varieties.


He
has so far set up bird sanctuaries in Da Lat, Dam Sen park in Ho Chi
Minh City, and Pham Van Dong park on Son Tra island and at a steel
plant in the central city of Da Nang, raising a total of 3,800
doves.


His desire to release 1,000 doves at the opening
ceremony of the Thang Long-Hanoi millennium celebrations as a gift to
the capital received the support of the city’s fathers.


Hanoi has chosen its Botanical Gardens as the doves’ new home./.

Friendship Cup 2010 draws 12 teams

HCMC – The amateur Friendship Cup 2010, had its opening ceremony at Tao Dan Stadium in HCMC’s District 1 on Monday. The tournament draws five foreign and seven local amateur football teams from the city’s diplomatic agencies and foreign businesses.

The foreign teams were formed by the consulate general offices of the U.S., Indonesia and South Korea, the Vietnam-France Friendship Association and Laos Students, while local teams are the HCMC Union of Friendship Organizations, the HCMC Department of Foreign Affairs, the Service Company to Foreign Missions (FOSCO), Hong Bang International University, Dai Thanh Company, HCMC Open University and Hinh Anh Viet Company. 

The HCMC Union of Friendship Organizations, which organizes the tournament, said the annual competition aims to strengthen ties between foreign communities in HCMC. The tournament will celebrate the 65th anniversary of National Day and the 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi.

The organizers of the Friendship Cup will present a bonus prize of VND4 million for the winners. The runner-up will take VND3 million while third will get VND2 million.

The tournament will end at October 2 at Tao Dan Stadium.
