Vietnam hold 1-1 draw with Singapore at Sonha Cup

HCMC – The Vietnamese national squad tied 1-1 with Singapore in the second game of the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) Sonha Cup on Thursday at My Dinh National Stadium in Hanoi while South Korea U23 also did the same with North Korea, securing the top spot in the four-team tournament in the earlier game.

The Vietnamese side began the game with a changed lineup after a 0-2 loss to South Korea U23 in their opener. Midfielder Phan Van Tai Em and defender Huynh Quang Thanh made his debut at the tournament, replacing midfielder Le Tan Tai defender Dang Van Phong from the beginning. Defender Le Phuoc Tu and midfielder Pham Thanh Luong  also played in the first minutes.

Though the game was only a friendly, the competition between hosts Vietnam and archrivals Singapore is always fiercely competitive, moreover, the tournament is considered the final test for both Vietnam and Singapore before the Southeast Asian championship/AFF Suzuki Cup 2010, which will be held in Vietnam and Indonesia from December 1 to 29.

The chief coach of the national football team Coach Henrique Calisto and his squad made their final preparations to defend the AFF-Suzuki Cup where Vietnam have been drawn in Group B with Singapore, the Philippines and Myanmar.

Under heavy pressure from local fans, hosts Vietnam put their rivals under a lot of pressure, while the Singaporean squad, with height advantage, looked composed and confident throughout and caused the home team problems with their rare counter attacks.

Although the Vietnamese players had the most possession over the first minutes and managed to create dozens of chances, the Singaporean side defense resiliently held out to keep a clean sheet.

Singapore surprisingly took an advance in a rare attack when Shi Jiayi scored for his team in the 25th minute after receiving the ball from Duric in the penalty box.

In the second half, coach Henrique Calisto made some key changes when Nguyen Huy Hoang and Le Sy Manh made their debut, replacing  Le Tan Tai and Nguyen Minh Phuong in the first minutes of the second half. Nguyen Trong Hoang replaced Pham Thanh Luong in the 58th minute.

Although the Vietnamese players had the most possession over the second half and managed to create dozens of chances, however, the spectators waiting for 30 minutes into the second half to celebrate the hosts’ leveling when Phan Van Tai Em netted for his team with a comfortable kick after receiving the ball from midfielder Le Sy Manh in the penalty box.

In the earlier game on Thursday, North Korea tied 1-1 with South Korea U23. Ri Myong Jun scored for the North Korean side just three minutes into the game while  Jung Woo Young equalized for South Korea in the 37th minute with a penalty kick.

With the draw, North Korea and South Korea U23 earned four points each but the South Korean side secured the top spot thanks to the goal difference. Both Vietnam and the Singapore’s hopes of winning  the cup were faded when they secured just one each from two games.

The champions will be decided on Saturday when South Korea U23 will play Singapore at 5:00 p.m. and Vietnam take on North Korea at 7:00 p.m. in the final games.

The national football teams from Singapore, North Korea and hosts Vietnam together with the U23 team of South Korea are competing in the annual tournament. The four teams are playing in a round-robin tournament with the team that gets the most points being declared the championship. The tournament is taking place from Tuesday to Saturday in Hanoi.

Hosts Vietnam thrash Myanmar at int’l U21 contest

Hosts Vietnam thrash Myanmar at int’l U21 contestHosts Vietnam beat Myanmar 5-1 in their opening match at the fourth edition of the Thanh Nien-sponsored International U21 Football Tournament at HCMC’s Thong Nhat Stadium on Saturday.

The big win has brought the national U21 squad closer to a semifinal berth. There are only three teams in each group and the best two will advance to the semifinals.

However, things were not easy for the hosts as the score suggests. They took the lead after nine minutes, but the Myanmarese players fought back and scored an equalizer 20 minutes later, with Pyaye Phyo pouncing on an opportunity to get one past Vietnamese goalkeeper Thanh Diep.

Stung by the underdogs, the Vietnamese players began applying more pressure on their rival’s defense with fast attacks. These efforts only paid off about midway through the second half when Myanmar started making mistakes.

First, defenders tackled Trong Phi in the penalty area, and Huu Phat scored from the spot to make it 2-1 for Vietnam.

This opened the gate for more scoring chances, three of which were taken.

Speaking after the match, Myanmar’s U21 team coach Than Htike said, “The Vietnamese players were stronger. We tried our best but couldn’t avoid conceding the goals.

“We will try harder in our next game against Thailand to leave a good impression on Vietnamese football fans.”

Vietnam’s U21 team coach Dinh Van Dung praised his players for their performance. “After this win, we will play even better in the clash with Thailand,” Dung said.

At this year’s event, four U21 teams from Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and Myanmar are competing against Vietnam’s U21 and U19 teams.

In the other group, Singapore and Malaysia fought to a 1-1 draw in their opening match on Saturday.

Strong foreign squads compete at Int’l U.21 contest

The U21 Malaysian squad arrived at the Tan Son Nhat International Airport on Thursday morning

Four foreign teams will compete with hosts Vietnam at the fourth International Under-21 Football Tournament which kicks off at Ho Chi Minh City’s Thong Nhat Stadium on Saturday, October 23.

The organizers of the Thanh Nien-sponsored nine-day event said that the Singaporeans are the most prominent contenders at the contest.

Nine members of the squad advanced to the semifinals in last year’s competition in Binh Duong.

Five of them competed at the second event in Hue in 2008 and four of them played at the 25th Southeast Asian Games (SEA) in Vientiane last year.

Thailand’s team includes 90 percent of the U19 squad that advanced to the final match of the 2010 SEA U19 event in Ho Chi Minh City in August.

The Thais intend to groom these players to compete at the 26th biennial Southeast Asian Games in Jakarta next year in the U23 category.

After their U23 team’s defeat at Thang Long Cup in HCMC early this month, Malaysia said they do not want to lose face again. Their U21 team coach Ibrahim Ismail said his squad includes seven players who competed last year and three that played at the second contest in Hue in 2008.

After a year off, Myanmar returns to this event with big hopes.

“The Thanh Nien-sponsored International U21 Football Tournament is a great place for us to discover new talent for Myanmar’s team to participate at the ASEAN Football Federation Cup (later this year),” wrote coach Than Htike in a letter sent to the Vietnam Football Federation. “We are in the same group with hosts Vietnam and will play the opener, so we will do our best.”

The Asian Football Confederation said it will send five international referees to the event. They are Lee Dong Jun from South Korea, Krishnan S/O Ramachandran from Malaysia, Xaypasenth Phongsanith from Laos and Thong Chanketya and Doung Sochet from Cambodia.

The three Vietnamese referees at the tournament will be Vo Minh Tri, Chau Duc Thanh and Tran Thanh Liem.

Hosts Vietnam crown invitational Eximbank Cup

The 10-man Olympic Vietnam beat Iran 2-0 in the last round Saturday to crown the championship title of the invitational tournament Eximbank Cup in Ho Chi Minh City to celebrate the 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi.

After taking a 1-0 lead with the goal by Anh Duc, the hosts Vietnam had to play with ten men at the start of the second half but braced up their attacking formation to double the score at the 80th minute.

In the 45th minute, Duc Thien curved a flying pass from the left wing to striker Anh Duc speeding down into Iran box and heading home the opening goal.

Just two minutes into the second half of the game, Anh Duc -- who scored three goals for Vietnam at the tourney -- was given a red card for fouling a rival.

Iran began piling up pressure towards the Vietnam’s field by launching long attacks with flying passes. However, the hosts’ defensive wall turned all of them down from outside the box.

Ten minutes before the end, Dinh Tung was set up in the left side and dribbled the ball into Iran box and slotted the ball through the legs of Iranian goalkeeper to fix a 2-0 victory for Vietnam.

In the 89th minute, Iran central defender Kar Rasoul was booked a second yellow card of the tense match and had to leave the field.

In the other match, Malaysia held Singapore to a goalless draw.

After three rounds, Vietnam scored seven points from two wins and a draw at the four-team event. Iran followed with four points, Singapore pocketed three from all three ties and Malaysia with one point.

Singapore hold hosts Vietnam to a draw

Hosts Vietnam humiliated at Hanoi football cup

Hosts Vietnam were beaten 2-0 by Australia on Wednesday, the second match-day of the Thang Long-Hanoi Football Cup.

The Socceroos sank the Henrique Calisto-coached side with two goals in the first half after displaying dominance in both physical fitness, speed and ball possession.

In the 19th minute, the player wearing number 11 jersey of the Socceroos, Jason Hoffman, separated two rival central defenders Nhu Thanh and Phuoc Tu and invaded the box to score his opening goal.

Seventeen minutes later, Tahj Rodney Minniecon escaped the offside trap of the defensive wall of Vietnam to double the scores.

Vietnam, who romped past Kuwait 3-0 on Monday, could almost set up no clear chances to threat the Australian goalkeeper Andrew James Redmayne after the visiting team performed close fighting for the ball to take advantage of their height and fitness.

It leaves no space for Vietnamese players to manage.

The hosts strived to launch more attacking efforts in the second half of the match but failed to convert any goal.

In the other game of the match-day two, North Korea, who won Australia 1-0 in the opening round, found their second straight victory after beating Kuwait 1-0 and are leading the table with six points.

The September 20-24 tournament to celebrate the 1,000 anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi has four teams partaking in single round robin format with the champions to pocket US$20,000. Two runners-up get $10,000 and $5,000 respectively.
