Derby hero Rooney helps Man United to sink City

Sir Alex Ferguson described Wayne Rooney's winning goal in the Manchester derby as the best he had ever seen, but the United manager still wants more from his star striker.

Rooney, so disappointing for much of this season, scored for just the fifth time in the league as his stunning overhead kick from Nani’s cross secured a crucial 2-1 victory over Manchester City at Old Trafford on Saturday.

"I haven't seen anything like it, that's for sure," Ferguson said. "It reminded me of Denis Law although whether Denis ever put them in with such ferocity, I'm not so sure.

"I can't ever remember a better goal at Old Trafford. There was a Rooney volley against Newcastle I remember a few years ago with that kind of ferocity and we have had some fantastic goals here."

However, Ferguson, whose side are four points ahead of second-placed Arsenal, still believes he should be getting more from Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov, currently the Premier League's leading goalscorer but left out of the starting line-up for the derby.

"I hope that is Wayne back to his best," said Ferguson. "I have to say, what I need to get out of Wayne and Berbatov are performances away from home that are as good as they are at home.

"That is the quandary. With the quality those two have, we should be dictating games away from home. When they do that, it will make a hell of a difference."

Nani had given United the lead, against the run of play, late in the first half with a very well-taken effort of his own - although it was nothing in comparison to Rooney's 78th minute winner.

"The thing is Nani's goal will be completely forgotten!" added Ferguson.

"That was a fantastic goal - an unbelievable touch, he took it round the defender, but nobody in their right mind would even talk about that. All the talk will be about that winning goal. Unbelievable."

City enjoyed control of large periods of the game and, after a lucky second half equalizer when Edin Dzeko's shot deflected off the back of David Silva, looked potential winners.

Defeat, in contrast, leaves City eight points behind United, who have a game in hand, and Rooney had no doubts as to where the winning goal belonged in the context of his career.

"Yes, I think that's the best goal of my life. I scored an overhead kick at school but that's my first since I started playing professionally," he said.

"I think it's pure instinct. You don't have time to think about what you're going to do. Nine times out of ten it hits the bar or goes wide but thankfully this one hit the top corner.

"To score that goal, and see the joy on the faces of the crowd, the manager, the players ... it's fantastic.

"To be honest, I was disappointed with my overall performance but I spoke with a few lads and they told me to stay up in the area and I'd get my chance.

"I've played in derbies before so I know it's a massive game for the whole city, especially with City being so close.

"And after dropping three points last week it was vital we won and kept the gap between us and City."

City manager Roberto Mancini sounded resigned to handing United the title although he paid tribute to the performance of his losing team.

"We were beaten by a moment of pure genius," he said. "Only a fantastic goal could decide this game. A fair result would have been a draw.

"We played well, we played as a team and we played strong here which is not easy. But United have a strong mentality and even when they don't deserve to win a game they believe they do.

"Our mentality will change when we win a title. But eight points is too much at the moment."

Fergie confident of United staying power

Sir Alex Ferguson saw Manchester United maintain their impressive unbeaten start to the season and claimed his club has the depth and experience to hold onto their position at the top of the Premier League.

A Dimitar Berbatov hat-trick, with additional goals from Ryan Giggs and Nani, eased United to an emphatic 5-0 victory over Birmingham and allowed Ferguson to take key players such as Patrice Evra and Ryan Giggs out of the fray to rest for matches ahead.

United's next match is a re-arranged fixture at Blackpool on Tuesday – a game for which Rio Ferdinand (groin) and Michael Carrick, who injured his ankle in the first half against Birmingham are both doubtful – although the United manager believes his in-form team can cope.

"It helps our goal difference, no doubt about that," said Ferguson of a victory which extends United’s unbeaten run to 22 league games this season, 27 dating back to last term.

"We have some tough games ahead of course. Hopefully the players can grasp the nettle. They have good experience, we've got the squad and hopefully we can manage all the games ahead.

"I was pleased with a good team performance. What helps is you score the early goal, getting a goal after a minute, they have to open up. It's a different perspective you have to face and we capitalized on that.

"It was a good scoreline at half-time and I was able to take Patrice Evra off, gave him a break by bringing on Fabio, and take Ryan Giggs off which was important because we have a big game on Tuesday."

Giggs turned in an eye-catching display, which featured a goal, on the weekend that the 37-year-old has declared that he wishes to spend at least one more season playing for the only club of his illustrious career.

"Ryan Giggs can easily play another year," said Ferguson. "He's as fresh as a daisy, we look after him the right way and he manages himself the right way. Being able to take him off was a bonus."

However, Berbatov – who has now scored 18 goals this season, 17 in the league, including three hat-tricks – was the real star of United’s performance.

His pairing with Wayne Rooney looks particularly explosive at present although the England forward continues his modest goal production.

Having missed at least one glaring chance, Rooney has now scored just two league goals this season, one of them from the penalty spot.

"We hope so," said Ferguson when asked if Rooney’s return to scoring form is imminent.

"He deserves it, he's working his socks off. He was involved in some great football today and involved in the fourth goal just after half-time with fantastic control from a ball from Edwin van der Sar coming out of the clouds, then setting up Ryan.

"Dimitar was marvelous. He could have scored more and we were a bit wasteful at times with our finishing but you can't complain at that performance, that was the important thing.

"His link-up with Wayne was very good. The third goal was a very, very exciting goal. Berba won the ball then his interplay with Wayne, and the ball from Wayne to Ryan was fantastic. It was an exciting goal and, on the stroke of half-time, killed off the match."

Beaten Birmingham manager Alex McLeish conceded that he and his team were distracted slightly by the looming League Cup semi-final second leg tie with West Ham on Wednesday.

"I had one eye on that," he said. "You can play your best team or shut up shop. We decided to go with some of the forward players who would play to their strengths.

"But we never got our passing game going. We had a small spell when we got behind them but we gifted a second goal and it was verging on the amateur. You can play your best and most experienced defenders and still lose.

"We were perhaps a bit bold and sometimes you get punished and sometimes it pays off – we were punished here. We shot ourselves in the foot. We have a group of players who bounce back well. Taking a drubbing today, people will ask whether if will affect confidence but in the dressing room, they are more angry than anything else."

HA NOI — Malaysia beat Indonesia 4-2 on aggregate to win the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup for the first time in the country's history yesterday in Jakarta, Indonesia.

A loss of 1-2 to the hosts in the final's second leg match could not stop Malaysia from opening a new chapter in the history of the regional football tournament which up until now had been dominated by three-time winners Thailand and Singapore.

Mohd Safee Sali opened the scoring for Malaysia nine minutes after the break. Until then Indonesia had made things difficult for their opponents, attacking aggressively with a view to levelling the three-goal deficit they faced after the first leg match.

The talented player who scored twice in the semi-final against Viet Nam got his goal after he received a long-range pass and shot truly into the net.

The goal made him the top striker of the tournament with five goals to his name.

Indonesia, with their President watching on, found their equaliser in the 71th minute when defender Mohammad Nasuha scored from near the edge of the box.

His team doubled their tally 17 minutes later when Muhammad Ridwan scored his third goal at the tournament. His strong shot deflected off a Malaysian player before entering the net.

Malaysia are surprise winners of the tournament. At the previous championship two years ago they were ousted in the qualifying round.

This time they were placed in the ‘group of death' together with Thailand and Indonesia and after their humiliating 1-5 loss to hosts Indonesia in the group stage, no one gave them a chance.

The team only made it through to the knockout stage after Thailand, the most powerful team in Southeast Asia, were eliminated from the championship.

However, after that they had a complete reversal of form. First there was a great 2-0 victory over defending champion Viet Nam in the semi-final and then a 3-0 victory over Indonesia in the final's first leg on Sunday.

It has been be a very successful year for Malaysia with two important titles going to them in the last twelve months. Last December Malaysia defeated Viet Nam 1-0 to claim the Southeast Asian Games Cup.

Yesterdays' match did not help Indonesia's coach Alfred Riedl shake off his ‘Mr Silver' moniker. Once again, he pocketed a silver medal, just as he has done on every single occasion he has taken a team to a tournament final. The previous occasions were when he worked with Viet Nam several years back. — VNS

HA NOI — Ten-man Viet Nam defeated Singapore 1-0 to go through to the semi-finals of the Southeast Asian Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup yesterday at Ha Noi's My Dinh Stadium.

Millions of Vietnamese flooded the streets of the city to celebrate the victory. If Viet Nam had drawn with Singapore, they would have failed to qualify for the next round and Singapore would have gone through instead.

Nguyen Vu Phong scored the only goal of the game with a gentle tap past goal keeper Hassan in the 32nd minute of the match. Phong's goal followed a three-pass combination started by midfielder Nguyen Trong Hoang and which took in diminutive Thanh Luong.

"My players have played very well in all of their matches, not only today's. Whenever they have had a chance to attack they attacked, and they also defended very well," said Viet Nam's manager Henrique Calisto.

"Today, Viet Nam created many chances and one was turned into a goal but we lost control of the game when Trong Hoang was sent off [in the 63rd minute]. That forced me to replace talented Thanh Luong with a defender and Viet Cuong was sidelined because of injury," Calisto said.

"I have to thank the fans for their great support, which was important to raising my players' spirits in a difficult situation," he added.

The Portuguese coach also praised left defender Cuong, who asked to continue playing despite being injured in the first half.

Most of Singapore's players dropped to the ground when the final whistle came, having missed out on several opportunities to level the match.

"My players tried their best but we were unlucky today. We had enough chances during the game and I am disappointed they did not get a goal," said Singapore's coach Radojko Avramovic.

"Meanwhile their failed corner kick was the start of the Vietnamese counter-attack, from which they scored."

The Serbian coach wished Viet Nam good luck at the end of the match, but criticised some of the refereeing.

"My goalkeeper was given a yellow card [for time wasting] when he was simply considering his options. Meanwhile, Vietnamese players who tried to waste time received nothing," he said.

Calisto meanwhile said Singapore's elimination from the tournament was a pity because they were a good team.

When asked about Malaysia, who Viet Nam will meet in the semis, Calisto would not be drawn, and said simply he wanted to savour the quarter-final victory.

The other semi-final will see the Philippines, who for the first time have qualified for the knock-out stages of the competition, will play Indonesia, who sent title favourites Thailand packing on Tuesday with a 2-0 victory at home.

The first leg of the semi-finals will take place on December 15-16. The second leg will be three days later.

Vietnamese players have been promised a bonus of VND7 billion (US$350,000) if they successfully defend their title. — VNS

Singapore edge Myanmar 2-1

The three-time champion Singapore came from behind to narrowly win the underdog Myanmar 2-1 in the group B’s second match-day today at the Southeast Asian Football Championship, Suzuki Cup, in Hanoi.

The opening goal was written for defender Lwin Khin Maung of Myanmar in the 13 minute after a fast counterattack.

With the Myanmarese defence showing much better discipline after losing 7-1 to hosts Vietnam in the opener, the Singaporeans were reduced to shooting from distance but none was successfully converted into goal during the first half.

In the second phase, Singapore piled up more pressure, playing with sometimes three strikers.

In the 62nd minute, forward Aleksander Duric leveled it 1-1 following an attack launched from the right flank.

And the last-gasp goal by Agu Cashmir in the 90th minute gave Singapore the first win and also helped relive their hope to advance at the tournament.

Both sides produced a lackluster performance with the struggle for the ball mainly taking place in the midfield where both troops were disposed heavily.

In the opening matchday on Thursday, Singapore tied 1-1 with the Philippines while hosts and defending champions Vietnam thrashed Myanmar 7-1.

U19s win International Cup

U19s win International Cup

The Thanh Nien (Young People) newspaper's International Football
Championship Cup stayed in Vietnam for the second time after Vietnam's
U19 team defeated the Thai U21 2-1 on Oct. 31 in HCM City.

Despite being considered weak compared to their rivals, the host proved
that they could not be defeated by starting the match with effective
attacks from the very first seconds.

Nguyen Hai Huy's
opening goal proved their power in the first half. His 16.50m straight
shot made more than 10,000 spectators, including national head coach
Henrique Calisto, burst into happy and uninterrupted applause.

But Thailand were still a tough opponent throughout the
tournament. Their forward trio of Sokjoho, Hongthong and Anan forced the
Vietnamese players to work very hard to protect their net.

Thai tactics included rotating their positions in an aim to stretch
the Vietnamese defence to level the score. However, this effort proved
fruitless as they consistently had to back off to help their teammates
thwart threatening counter-attacks from the Vietnamese side.

Goalie Buu Ngoc worked hard to keep the Thais to one goal after
miscommunication between his teammates allowed a close-range shot by
Meesawad to be converted into the second goal of the match.

The sudden loss confused the Vietnamese players to such an extent that
Thai halfback Jungreed nearly scored a second goal a few minutes later.
But Ngoc continued with his heroics to block many other Thai shots
throughout the match. He was later voted as the best player of the
match.

In the 78th minute, Vietnam scored their
second goal in a rapid counter-attack. Van Quyet, who played in the
shadows for much of the match, passed the ball across the box to a
waiting Minh Tuan. His shot was punched out but the ball ricocheted to
Van Thanh who scored with ease.

In addition to the cup, the team was awarded 300 million VND (15,000 USD).

In the earlier match, the U21 Thanh Nien Newspaper team beat U21 Malaysia 1-0 to secure third place.

Substitute striker Hoang Nhat Nam scored the only goal of the
match from a free kick in the 82nd minute. The score would have been
higher if Huu Phat had not missed a penalty a short time earlier.

This was the fourth year the tournament was organised with
international teams. Vietnam 's first victory was in 2007 when they
defeated Thailand 1-0 in the final./.

New coach, same story as Belarus shock France

France learned the road to post-World Cup redemption will be long and hard as they suffered a 1-0 defeat at home to Belarus on Friday, while Spain reveled in their status as world and European champions with an easy win over Liechtenstein.

England and Italy were able to make positive starts on their routes to recovery from disappointing World Cup displays, scoring contrasting wins in their first Euro 2012 qualifiers.

England played with the sort of skill and quick passing that completely eluded them in South Africa as they beat Bulgaria 4-0 at Wembley, Jermain Defoe netting a smartly taken hat-trick in the Group G clash.

Italy were almost embarrassed but were ultimately able to celebrate a 2-1 victory after coming from a goal down away to Estonia in Group C.

For France, though, there was only further misery, as a much changed team from the World Cup was cheered on to the pitch but roundly booed off it.

Laurent Blanc's first competitive match since replacing Raymond Domenech after a World Cup campaign that veered between farce and fiasco offered few positives for the French, as a late goal from Sergei Kislyak consigned them to a Group D defeat.

While Europe's first big night of competitive international action since the World Cup was a chance for atonement for the flops, it was a celebration for the three big success stories.

Spain led the way as two goals from Fernando Torres and one from World Cup hero David Villa -- who moved to within one goal of equaling Raul's scoring record for the country -- helped them brush past Liechtenstein in a Group I match in Vaduz.

David Silva was the other scorer in the opening match of the defense of the title Spain won in Austria and Switzerland in 2008.

The Netherlands, beaten by the Spanish in the Johannesburg final, saw off San Marino 5-0 in Group E with a hat-trick from Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.

Serious opponents

Germany, who took third place at the World Cup, had a tougher night against more serious opponents in Group A but came through 1-0 against Belgium with a goal from the ever reliable Miroslav Klose.

In the night's other David and Goliath clash, Russia proved there is no room for sentiment when it comes to the business of qualifying, grabbing a workmanlike 2-0 win away to Andorra in Group B thanks to two goals from Pavel Pogrebnyak.

While Blanc was suffering the ignominy of defeat, new Italy coach Cesare Prandelli was able to celebrate -- but only after an almighty scare.

The hosts opened the scoring in the 31st minute when forward Sergei Zenjov struck after Italian keeper Salvatore Sirigu lost his grip on the wet ball.

The 2006 world champions just managed to halt their seven-game win drought thanks to second-half goals from Antonio Cassano and Leonardo Bonucci.

"It's a strong emotion," Prandelli told Rai TV after his first competitive game in charge. "We had the right reaction and deserved to win.”

“I said at halftime we had to continue doing the right things but with more speed.

“We made mistakes on nearly every dead ball we conceded,” he admitted.

"At the moment Antonio Cassano and Giampaolo Pazzini are the two forwards who shine the most."

England's commanding win over Bulgaria will have come as a relief to another Italian coach in Fabio Capello, whose position was called into question after England's limp 4-1 exit to Germany in the World Cup second round.

Defoe's opening goal in the third minute set them on their way and while their form dipped after that they finished strongly. Defoe completed his hat-trick with goals in the 61st and 86th minutes, with Adam Johnson also finding the net.

Chelsea maintain perfect start, Arsenal win

LONDON - Chelsea's goal-rush was staunched by Stoke City but the Premier League champions maintained their perfect start to the season with a 2-0 home victory on Saturday despite a missed penalty by Frank Lampard.

The England midfielder saw his spot kick saved by Thomas Sorensen but Florent Malouda fired Chelsea ahead just past the half hour mark and Didier Drogba tucked away a second-half penalty to seal a win that was much harder work than their 6-0 thrashings of West Bromwich Albion and Wigan Athletic.

Carlo Ancelotti's side top the table with a maximum nine points and a 14-0 goal difference while Arsenal moved to seven with an impressive 2-1 victory at Blackburn Rovers where Theo Walcott scored his fourth goal of the season.

The surprise result of the day came a White Hart Lane where Wigan Athletic hit back from two crushing defeats to beat Champions League qualifiers Tottenham Hotspur 1-0.

Hugo Rodallega's late goal decided a fixture that Tottenham won 9-1 last season.

Blackpool's first home match in the top flight since 1971 ended in a 2-2 draw with Fulham while Andy Carroll was on target again for promoted Newcastle United who drew 1-1 at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Manchester United can join Arsenal on seven points if they beat West Ham United in an early evening kickoff.

Chelsea have been unstoppable so far this season but Stoke proved a much tougher proposition than they did at the back end of last season when they were hammered 7-0 at Stamford Bridge.

Lampard wasted the chance to put the hosts in front when his poorly-struck penalty, awarded for a foul on Malouda by Ryan Shawcross, was saved by Sorensen.

Spared blushes

Malouda spared Lampard's blushes soon afterwards when he latched on to John Terry's pass to score but Stoke never looked like capitulating.

The visitors almost leveled when Matthew Etherington's shot was blocked on the line by Drogba and then Glenn Whelan's powerful shot struck the crossbar.

After 77 minutes Nicolas Anelka was brought down by Sorensen, and with Lampard having been substituted, Drogba made no mistake from the penalty spot.

Walcott's sparkling early-season form for Arsenal continued at Ewood Park and the England striker has already matched his goal tally for the whole of the last campaign which culminated with his exclusion from the World Cup squad.

He fired Arsenal ahead with a fine finish after 20 minutes and although Mame Diouf levelled for Rovers on his first Premier League start the Gunners sealed a deserved victory when Andrei Arshavin scored early in the second half.

The only blemish for manager Arsene Wenger was the sight of Dutch striker Robin van Persie limping off with a twisted ankle before halftime.
