Lack of strikers blights Vietnam’s AFF campaign

Injuries to key strikers and an interminable pre-tournament training camp were the reasons for Vietnam’s early exit from last month’s Southeast Asian Football Championship, officials and coaches who reviewed the fiasco at a meeting Thursday agreed.

The Vietnam Football Federation’s National Board of Coaches said the squad had virtually no forwards following injuries to Cong Vinh and Viet Thang.

Things got worse after four other key players, defenders Quang Thanh and Viet Cuong and midfielders Tai Em and Trong Hoang, had to sit out the second leg of the semifinal against Malaysia in Hanoi due to injuries and bookings.

In the event, Vietnam were held to a goalless draw and crashed out. They had lost the first leg 2-0.

Malaysia went on to beat Indonesia in the final to win the title.

Vietnam’s Portuguese coach Henrique Calisto and officials also admitted that the two-month training camp before the tournament in December drained the players.

The VFF and Calisto decided that in future camps will be no longer than three weeks.

The National Board of Coaches said errors by goalkeeper Tan Truong and Calisto himself were partially to blame for the loss.

Calisto will, however, continue to be in charge at the 26th SEA Games in Indonesia and World Cup qualifiers this year. His contract with Vietnam only expires in 2013.

He gets a monthly salary of US$22,000 and other perks, including accommodation, flight tickets to Portugal for his annual vacation, health insurance, and possible bonuses for good performances.

Calisto took over the squad in March 2008.

Calisto not too perturbed by 2-0 loss to Malaysia

Vietnamese coach Henrique Calisto has not lost hope despite his team’s 2-0 defeat to Malaysia in the first-leg semifinal of the Suzuki Cup Wednesday.

He said in Kuala Lumpur the team did not play their normal game and were unable to control the midfield, he told the media after the loss.

Do you think Vietnam can advance after the 2-0 defeat?

[A score of] 2-1 or 1-0 would have reflected the true situation. If we had scored, it would be much easier. It is very difficult now because Vietnam have to score three goals or more [in the second-leg match at My Dinh Stadium] to eliminate Malaysia.

If they can score two goals against us, we can score two goals in Hanoi. We must believe, but it will not be easy. If my key players recover from injuries, I will play them in the second leg.

What do you think about the referee?

He sometimes failed to control the game well. But we don’t blame him for our defeat. We made some crucial mistakes and gave away two goals. This is a game. So, it is normal for goalkeepers to make mistakes. This is life.

Were you surprised by Malaysia’s performance?

No. They were well organized and have good players.

Coach Mai Duc Chung:Vietnam will advance

Vietnam played very well in the first half. Midfielders Minh Phuong, Thanh Luong, and Vu Phong controlled the ball skillfully and made precise passes. Though we had more scoring opportunities, I regret we could not find a goal. Malaysia were lukewarm and did not create many chances.

If we could have controlled the match better in the second half, we could have won. However, the turning point of the match was the crucial error by goalkeeper Tan Truong. He did not remain focused and allowed Safee's header to go through his hands into the goal.

But that is life. After that, the hosts played long balls to take full advantage of the speed and strength of forwards Safid and Safee.

But I do believe that Vietnam can advance into the finals because we play the second leg at the My Dinh stadium where we trounced Myanmar 7-1. That will be a very big advantage.

HA NOI — Viet Nam's football team will meet Singapore in a make-or-break match in Group B of the ASEAN Football Championship AFF-Suzuki Cup tomorrow.

The hosts, who lost 2-0 to the Philippines on Sunday, must win to guarantee a spot in the semi-finals.

The Philippines, who lead the group with four points, need only a draw with Myanmar to qualify for the last four.

Singapore scraped a last minute 2-1 win over Myanmar on Sunday and will advance to the semi-finals if they draw with Viet Nam at the 40,000 capacity My Dinh National Stadium.

"Singapore showed good mental toughness to defeat Myanmar in the last two minutes on Sunday. However, we won't miss our chances to score the goals we need to defeat them," said Viet Nam's coach Henrique Calisto.

"We were unable to score in our game against the Philippines, but I'm proud of my players because they fought hard during the match. They have worked hard since they helped Viet Nam win the AFF Cup two years ago," he told a press conference.

Singapore's coach Radojko Avramovic said the match with Viet Nam has been highly anticipated between the two sets of fans.

"It will be an intriguing match (between Viet Nam and Singapore) for spectators, not for coaches. I think the match will be exciting, but very tough for us," Avramovic said.

Myanmar meet the Philippines at Nam Dinh's Thien Truong Stadium, 90km south of Ha Noi, while Viet Nam play Singapore in Ha Noi, both at 7pm tomorrow.

Philippines coach Simon McMenemy said he had told his players to give 100 per cent in tomorrow's game. — VNS

HA NOI — The Viet Nam football team has been awarded the Labour Order, Third Class, for winning the ASEAN Football Championship-AFF-Suzuki Cup two years ago.

Portuguese coach Henrique Calisto and six members of the winning team, Le Cong Vinh, Duong Hong Son, Phan Van Tai Em, Vu Nhu Thanh, Nguyen Minh Phuong and Le Tan Tai, were among 18 players and assistant coaches to receive the certificates in Ha Noi.

The honour is expected to encourage the team before they play Myanmar in the opening match of this year's ASEAN Football Championship.

The group B contest will be played at Ha Noi's My Dinh Stadium on Thursday.

Viet Nam won the AFF-Suzuki Cup – co-hosted by Thailand and Singapore – with a 3-2 victory in a two-legged final against Thailand.

Viet Nam will play with Myanmar, the Philippines and Singapore in a round-robin in group B between Thursday and December 8.

The top two will qualify for the semi-finals. Last week, the AFF council decided to change the venue for the competition's second match from Ha Noi's Hang Day Stadium to Nam Dinh's Thien Truong Stadium.

Indonesia hosts group A which includes Thailand, Malaysia and Laos from December 1-8.

Viet Nam and Indonesia are co-hosting the regional football championship that ends on December 29.

Two countries have co-hosted since 2002 with the top two teams from each group advancing to the semi-finals and final that is played in a home-and-away format. — VNS

Vietnam avoid Suzuki Cup group of death

Defending champions Vietnam have been drawn in group B with Singapore and Myanmar in football’s AFF Suzuki Cup to be co-hosted by Vietnam and Indonesia in December.

Three strong teams, Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia, will be in group A.

Laos, Cambodia, the Philippines, Brunei, and Timor Leste will play qualifiers in Laos next month from which two will go to the finals.

“I think it’s rather easy for Vietnam in group B,” coach Henrique Calisto said after the draw in Hanoi Thursday.

Coach Radojko Avramovich of Singapore said his side will advance to the final.

“[But] I know it won’t be easy,” he told Tuoi Tre.

“Myanmar has made progress and Vietnam is always a hard opponent, especially at home.

“All teams know that playing Vietnam in My Dinh is a hard task.

However, he conceded Vietnam has a better chance.

In the last AFF Suzuki Cup in 2008 Singapore held Vietnam to a goalless draw in the first leg of the semifinal before losing 1-0 in the second. Vietnam went on beating Thailand 3-2 to clinch the title.

Steve Darby, Thailand’s assistant coach, said he is looking forward to seeing his side play Vietnam in the final.

“Thailand will do well though we are in the more difficult group,” he said.
