VN set for new sepak takraw cup

Viet Nam will take part in the first sepak takraw World Cup to be held in Malaysia on July 21-14.

Viet Nam is regarded as one of the strongest teams at the tournament, which will see 24 men's and 12 women's teams competing at the Titiwangsa Gymnasium in Kuala Lumpur.

Badminton tourney set for March

The Ciputra Ha Noi Challenge badminton tournament will kick off on March 29 with the participation of players from China, Malaysia, Kazakhstan and New Zealand.

The annual event has a top prize of US$15,000 awarded in the men's and women's singles and doubles and mixed doubles categories.

The finals are scheduled for April 3 at the capital's Trinh Hoai Duc Gymnasium.

FA Cup trophy to tour Viet Nam

The FA Cup will tour Viet Nam next month following an agreement signed on January 29 between the English Football Association (FA) and the Viet Nam Football Federation.

The exhibit will tour Ha Noi, Da Nang, HCM City and Can Tho.

A report by the FA shows that the 140-year-old competition, the oldest domestic football competition in the world, is broadcast in 160 nations and territories across the world, attracting over 1.4 billion spectators.

The FA Cup was first held in 1871-72. It involves clubs of all standards playing against each other, including "minnows" from lower divisions and giants from the English Premier League.

The holders of the FA Cup are Chelsea, who beat Portsmouth in the 2010 final to complete an FA Cup and League double.

Tennis stars to compete in VN

Tennis players David Nalbandian and Tommy Haas will be taking part in the Viet Nam's Heineken Stars 2010 tournament.

Argentinian Nalbandian is the former world No 3. He currently ranks 37. The German star meanwhile, who has recently become a naturalised American, was also formally the world No 3. He now ranks 126.

The duo will play Sam Querrey and Robby Ginepri of the US at HCM City's Phu Tho Gymnasium on October 1-2.

The winner of the event will receive US$40,000.

Previously, Heineken invited Carlos Moya, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Jo-Wilfred Tsonga, Robin Soderling and Tomas Berdych to play in Viet Nam.

Viet Nam 1 take Sepak Takraw cup

Viet Nam 1 won the Viet Nam Sepak Takraw Open at Ha Noi's Hoang Mai Gymnasium on Wednesday.

Viet Nam 1 defeated Thailand 2-1 before beating Indonesia and Viet Nam 2 2-0.

Viet Nam 2 came second, followed by Indonesia.

The two host teams after the tournament flew to Thailand to take part in an intensive training course ahead of November's Asian Games.

They will be looking to defend the two gold medals they won four years ago in Qatar.

Quyen recovering from surgery

Song Lam Nghe An's Pham Van Quyen is recovering from the keyhole surgery he received on his leg in Singapore.

Doctors said Quyen was released from hospital after three days but will need to use crutches for the next three weeks.

Quyen earlier missed the chance to represent his country because of long-term damage to his ankle ligament. He is expected to be fit in two months.

The Viet Nam Football Federation and his club, Song Lam Nghe An, are calling on sponsors to share the cost of the US$20,000 operation. — VNS
