Thien got into the federation's U18 Group 4 semi-finals in the men's singles in the Tennis Central 18&under ITF Summer Championship in New Zealand last week and won the men's doubles.

The HCM City product hopes to reach the federation's top 100 junior ranking within the next two years.

Hoang Thien progresses at world junior tennis event

Vietnamese tennis player Nguyen Hoang Thien, 16, made encouraging performances at the 2011 Tennis Central 18 & U ITF Summer Championships in New Zealand after he defeated two rivals to clinch a spot to the 1/16 round.

The fifth seed Thien Tuesday won Bradley Mousley of Australia 6-3 6-1 in the second round. In the previous day, he had defeated host player Pratt Keerasuntonpong 6-3 6-3 in the opening round.

He is scheduled to take on the 12th seed of New Zealand Cameron Norrie in the third and 1/16 round today. The six-day tournament is slated to close on February 12 in Wellington.

Thien now ranks 241st according to the latest world ranking table released on Monday by the International Tennis Federation.

In a talk with Tuoi Tre on Tuesday, his father Nguyen Ngoc Minh said the achievement is resulted from strong investment by family during the last six years.

He said he sent his son to attend training courses in the US in 2005, just two years after he started training tennis at his age of eight.

Training and competition abroad has cost Thien permanent life far away from home and had never enjoyed New Year festival with family during the last six years.

Family spent almost US$2 million for him to train abroad in a bid to excel him to one of top-class player in the world, Minh said.

Female ref to attend London Olympics

Two female Vietnamese referees have been assigned by FIFA to officiate in the preliminary round of football for the London Olympics, the Viet Nam Football Federation announced yesterday.

Mai Hoang Trang of HCM City and assistant Kieu Thi Thuy of Ha Noi will be in charge of the women's qualifiers next year.

Trang and Thuy were approved by FIFA in 2007.

Viet Nam has three FIFA accredited female referees and two assistants.

Last year, FIFA also called up four male referees – Vo Minh Tri, Phung Dinh Dung, Nguyen Ngoc Ha and Nguyen Hoang Minh – to officiate over two men's qualifiers.

The federation has also submitted Vo Quang Vinh of Khanh Hoa and Hoang Anh Tuan from Ha Noi to FIFA for approval this year.

FIFA regulations state that member countries should nominate 20 men as qualified referees or linesmen each year, but Viet Nam presently lacks qualified personnel.

After match fixing scandals rocked the nation in 2007, around 40 referees and officials were suspended pending a police investigation.

Volleyball Federation to get new head

The Volleyball Federation of Viet Nam (VFV) will appoint a new general secretary for the next five-year term, the federation announced at a recent press conference.

Current VFV general secretary, Tran Duc Phan who was assigned as head of the national sports administration's elite sport department last year, decided to withdraw from the federation after an executive board meeting last week.

At the meeting, the VFV also agreed to hire a foreign coach for the men's national team, and host the Asian Women's Clubs Championship on May 15-25.

Volleyball was the second sport, after football, to become professionalised four years ago.

$3,500 compensation for lightning-hit footballer

Former Second Division footballer Tran Thanh Truong, who was struck by lightning while playing a match in 2008 and has become partially paralyzed, will get a compensation of just VND69 million (US$3,450), authorities announced yesterday.

The 29-year-old has been paid $2,000 by the Kien Giang Province Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and the remaining $1,450 will be paid by the football association, the Department’s vice director Vo Dong Lap said Wednesday.

However, Truong did not get his salary for the period left in his contract or insurance after the accident that took place in May 2008 when his team, Nguyen Hoang Kien Giang, were playing Vinh Long.

After being hit by a bolt, he became unconscious and his heart stopped briefly. Doctors diagnosed him with brain damage and partial paralysis and loss of speech.

Circular 34/2007 stipulates that the government should cover treatment costs through social and medical insurance if a sportsperson is injured during training or competition.

Besides, the victim should also be paid full salary during the period of treatment.

His mother had to feed him for almost two years until he got better but he continues to live off his family’s savings and donations from colleagues and sponsors.

Now, he can walk by himself but has almost lost his memory that he is again learning from text books meant for six-year-old children.

Teenagers take plunge at Asian Games

Teenagers take plunge at Asian Games

Teenage trio Nguyen Hoang Thien, Nguyen Thi Kim Tuyen and Hoang Quy
Phuoc will make their debut at the Asian Games in Guangzhou, China next
month.

Swimmers Phuoc and Tuyen, two of Vietnam's top swimmers, have been
training in China in preparation for the biggest sporting event in Asia.

Prodigy Phuoc, 17, from Da Nang has sustained the
form that helped him win a 100m butterfly bronze medal in the Southeast
Asian Games in Laos last year with a time of 55.65sec.

"Phuoc has rapidly perfected his skills in training. He has knocked
his personal best time down to 54.71sec in his favourite 100m butterfly
event," said Nguyen Dang Ha, who coaches Phuoc at the national sports
camp No 3 in Da Nang.

"However, the Asian Games will
be tough for Phuoc as he will face top stars from China, Japan and the
Republic of Korea. I believe he will give a lifetime best performance at
the Guangzhou Asian Games," Ha added.

The Da Nang-born swimmer has an arm span of 1.98m, which helps him move quickly through the water.

Meanwhile, Tuyen, 16, from HCM City also triumphed in the national
championships last year bagging 10 gold medals and breaking eight
records.

"She is one of Vietnam's most talented
swimmers. She wins gold almost every time she gets into the water at the
national championships. Tuyen is capable of competing in the freestyle,
butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and medley relay," said the general
secretary of the Vietnam Aquatic Sport Association, Dinh Viet Hung.

"But Tuyen needs more competitions and tests before the Asian Games. A
lack of big games experience against strong opposition is her Achilles'
heel but I hope she overcomes that at the Games that start in two weeks
time," Hung said.

The swimming events, with 38 medal sets up for grabs, will be held from November 13-18.

Nguyen Hoang Thien, 15, recently won two International Tennis Federation (ITF) junior single's titles in a fortnight.

Thien triumphed in the boy's singles at the International Junior
Championships in Bac Lieu southern province, just a week before cruising
to victory at the Vietnam International Junior Championships in Binh
Duong.

He has climbed from 497th in the ITF junior
rankings to 338th since last year, and he's looking to break into the
top 200 in the world by the time he's 18.

"It's the
first time he has been called to the national team to compete at the
Asian Games, but I'm not worried because he has already experienced
numerous international competitions," said Thien's father, Nguyen Hoang
Minh.

"He still has his eye on ITF tournaments to
boost his world ranking, which hopefully will enable him to compete at a
Grand Slam someday," Minh said.

Thien is expected to play one more tournament before flying to Guangzhou.

The tennis event will take place from November 13-23.

Vietnam has announced a 260-member squad to compete in 29 of the 42
events at the 16th festival from November 12-27. Vietnam hopes to finish
in the top 15 out of the 45 participating countries and territories./.
