Vietnam beats Jordan at Asian U19 contest

Vietnam beats Jordan at Asian U19 contestVietnam came from behind to beat Jordan 2-1 in the opening match at the 2010 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Championship in Shangdong, China on Monday.

Competing in Group C with Japan and U.A.E, Vietnam and Jordan began the match cautiously.

After about 10 minutes, the Vietnamese U19s quickened their pace and created some scoring opportunities. The clearest chance for Vietnam came in the 34th minute but Duy Long failed to convert it.

A couple of minutes later, Jordan took the lead while the Vietnamese U19s were not paying attention.

Thinking the Jordanian players would return the ball after Vietnamese defender Xuan Hung kicked it out-of-bounds (to allow doctors to tend an injured teammate) a Jordanian player threw the ball to striker Zatara, who headed it home.

After the break, the Vietnamese players launched relentless attacks, putting the Jordanian rivals under constant pressure.

As a result, Vietnam equalized some 10 minutes after half time when Quoc Phuong’s free kick whizzed past Jordan’s goalkeeper.

The Vietnamese U19s seemed to draw energy from the goal and increased pressure on Jordan’s defender Israiwa. The heat proved too much for the young Jordanian; Vietnam took a second point with only 10 minutes left on the clock.

The Vietnamese players continued to dominate in the remaining minutes but no more goals were scored.

Vietnam’s U19 team coach Trieu Quang Ha said the win was very important. It heightened his players’ spirits before their match with Japan’s U19s, who defeated the United Arab Emirates (U.A.E) 2-1 on Monday.

According to coach Quang Ha, the Japanese will prove strong rivals but the Vietnamese will take at least a point if they try their best.

Vietnam overturned Jordan’s initial 1-0 lead to ultimately seal the game with a 2-1 victory on Monday at the finals round of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U-19 Championship taking place in China from October 3-17.

In a game of few clear-cut chances, Jordan took the lead shortly before half time with Mahmoud Za’tara’s goal, but Vietnam’s Le Quoc Phuong equalized with a sublime 55th minute free-kick.

At 17 minutes to time, the South East Asians continued to dominate as Nguyen Van Thanh secured the victory with a second goal.

Jordan continued to press in the remaining minutes in a bid to snatch a late equalizer but Vietnam’s defense held firm to the final whistle.

The victory means Vietnam join Japan with three points each in group C after Keiichiro Nuno’s side defeated defending champions United Arab Emirates (UAE) 2-1 earlier in the day.

Vietnam will face Japan on Wednesday and UAE two days later.

The Vietnamese U-19 team coached by Trieu Quang Ha is one of 16 out of 38 Asian national teams to pass the qualifying round in November of last year.
