Pianists to compete at Chopin tourney in Singapore

Eight young Vietnamese pianists will be competing against 140 others at
the First International Chopin Piano tournament from Dec.1-5 in
Singapore .

The competition, which commemorates
the 200th anniversary of Chopin's birth, is being organised by the
Chopin Society ( Singapore ) and the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts.

The Vietnamese pianists, who are aged between 10 to 16, will be competing in four of five categories.

Do Hoang Linh Chi, 13, and Hoang Ho Thu, 15, have a lot of experience
of international competition, said Ta Quang Dong, a lecturer at the
Vietnam National Academy of Music, who will be accompanying the
competitors.

"The contestants can decide for
themselves which Chopin pieces they wish to play. The Hanoi
International Piano Contest that was held last September helped the
contestants enrich their Chopin repertoire," Dong said.

"The competition is being organised for the first time. It is prestigious though because of the calibre judges."

The judging panel consists of Gabriel Kwok, who has been head of
Keyboard Studies at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts since
1989; Francesco Nicolosi, who is one of the most distinguished pianists
of the Italian tradition; Snezana Panovska, a highly acclaimed piano
professor, who stems from the Republic of Macedonia; Wojciech Switata, a
professor at the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice; and
Warren Thompson, head of the School of Extension Studies at Sydney
Conservatorium./.

Vietnam film wins in Stockholm

Director Phan Dang Di's first movie, Bi, Dung So! (Bi, Don't Be Afraid),
has won Best First Feature at the 21st Stockholm International Film
Festival.

His senior cameraman, Pham Quang Minh, won
the award for best cinematography. Bi, Dung So! also won best
screenplay during the Cannes film festival's critics week, as well
as the new talent award at the Asia-Hong Kong Film Festival.

The film is scheduled to open at box offices in Vietnam next
month. It will be broadcast on TV network Arte Channel in France and
Germany .

The film narrates the story of a young
boy called Bi who lives with his mother, father and aunt in a house in
Hanoi . When Bi's grandfather, who has been absent for many years,
suddenly reappears, the family are once again reunited. However, his
return turns out to be far from auspicious. Bi's father begins to stay
out late, to the point where he stops coming home at all in what appears
to be a way of coming to turns with his own loneliness when his own
father was absent. Meanwhile, Bi's aunt falls in love with a young man
whom she meets on a bus, his father falls in love with a masseuse and
his mother behaves as if nothing has changed.

The
feature is much more than just a family drama. Director Di represents
the lost because he has no way to express complex emotions. The
photography borders on poetry and the interesting camera angles and the
fascinating film locations, combined with realistic dialogue, turn this
film into something extraordinary. Ordinary people become remarkable.
The life of the child is nothing short of enchanting, and viewers become
intimate witnesses of a family struggling to escape loneliness.

Holly Hunter, who starred in The Piano, headed the jury panel, said
she was amazed by power of the scenes and thought the film compelling.

Meanwhile, cameraman Minh's photography was described
as poetic and dignified in its simplicity and subtle technical
perfection.

The 12-day Stockholm Festival, which
ended on Nov. 28, was launched in 1990. It has become one of the leading

Festival honours buffalo boys

A unique folk festival celebrating the rural children who look after
buffalo has been revived near the central city of Da Nang for the
first time in nearly 75 years.

The festival, at
Phong Le village in Hoa Vang district's Hoa Chau commune, gathered 400
locals on Nov. 27-28 with traditional worship customs and folk games as
well as performances of tuong (classical drama).

According to local Ngo Van Nghia, this was the first time the festival had been held since 1936.

"The festival not only praises the buffalo children but also
celebrates the solidarity of all the working people in the village and
wishes for a lucky harvest and wealth for everyone," Nghia said.

"The festival used to be held every three years," said researcher Van
Thu Bich from the Da Nang Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism who
was the head of the festival preservation team and vows that it has been
re-created exactly the same as the original.

"We
will now try our best to hold it every two years in order to preserve
the local intangible cultural heritage as well as create a tourism
product for tourists visiting Da Nang ."

For the
revived festival, the village was lit up on Nov. 27 with hundreds of
lanterns and models of agricultural tools hanging all over the village.
Early morning on Nov. 28, a procession of the 60 buffalo children
travelled around the fields of the village, calling out wishes for a
good harvest and creating a atmosphere full of cheer and loud laughter.
They then participated in folk games like tug-of-war and catching ducks
while blindfolded.

They were chosen from 17 clans in
the village to take the central roles in various ceremonies at the
festival, such as a procession bearing a likeness of the god of
agriculture from a holy islet in the village called Con Than to the
village's communal house.

Legend holds that ducks
were unable to move their feet off the land when they reached the islet,
so the locals were afraid to visit it. One day, a herd of buffalo
strayed to the islet and local buffaloes boys brought them back safely.
Since then, the islet has been a popular place for buffalo children in
the village to gather, and the legend became the centrepiece of a
special festival for the children./.

Fans hesitate to buy AFF Cup tickets

HA NOI - Vietnamese fans have been slow to buy tickets for the opening match of the ASEAN Football Federation AFF-Suzuki Cup on Thursday between Viet Nam and Myanmar.

Outlets at Ha Noi's My Dinh and Hang Day stadiums sold just 2,500 tickets in three hours on Monday for Group B matches, with demand failing to reach the heights of two years ago when Viet Nam hosted the semi-finals and final.

Most fans were after tickets for the match between Viet Nam and Singapore on December 8, the most anticipated game in the group.

However, most Vietnamese football lovers are waiting for the result of the first game before paying for tickets for the following matches.

"As usual, fans are leaving it late, just one day before the opening match begins. However, what they really want are tickets to the last match in the group between Viet Nam and Singapore," said a ticket buyer, Ngoc Cuong.

"If Viet Nam beat Myanmar, people will rush for tickets," Cuong speculated.

In front of Hang Day Stadium, on Trinh Hoai Duc street, dozens of touts are offering tickets from VND100,000-VND200,000, just VND20,000 higher than face value.

The AFF has also released reduced ticket prices for the matches between Viet Nam and Singapore and Myanmar and the Philippines from VND50,000-VND150,000 because the two games will take place at the same time at Ha Noi's My Dinh Stadium and Nam Dinh's Thien Truong Stadium on December 8.

"I'll buy my ticket on Wednesday a few hours before the opening match kicks off. It's easy to buy tickets at the moment. Myanmar are not actually as tough as Singapore," said Do Son, a buyer at Hang Day Stadium.

He also said when Thailand play in the same group as Viet Nam, tickets sold like hot cakes because Vietnamese fans loved watching games between the two arch-rivals.

According to Viet Nam Football Development JSC, a ticket distributor, 40,000 tickets have been allocated for each match in Group B that fans can easily pick up from five distributors in Ha Noi. My Dinh and Hang Day are the most popular stadiums among Vietnamese fans, accounting for 40 per cent of the total tickets sold.

Only 25 per cent of tickets have been bought via the internet or message system.

Tickets can be purchased at www.aleale.com.vn.

For the final match between Viet Nam and Thailand two years ago, Vietnamese fans had to fork out up to VND3 million (US$150) to ticket touts – a significant increase on the face value of VND80,000 ($4). - VNS

Vietnam finishes ASIAD short of medal target

HCMC - The Vietnamese ASIAD team fell well short of their medal expectations at the 16th Asian Games (ASIAD) with only one gold of the six they’d hoped for.

Le Bich Phuong snagged the gold medal in the karate event. The team returns with 17 silvers and 15 bronzes, ranking them 24th - the second worst placing since Vietnam returned to Asia’s biggest sporting games in 1982. This year the team had aimed at 20th position.

Vietnam’s worst performance was at ASIAD 1990 in Beijing, China, when it did not win any medals.

The 33 medals were in shooting, athletics, rowing, wrestling, chess, Chinese chess, sepaktakraw, billiards, and martial arts events.

The karate entrant, Phuong, topped the team as the only gold medal holder, followed by sprinter Vu Thi Huong and medium-distance runner Truong Thanh Hang, each having two medals in track and field events.

Phuong defeated Kobayashi Miki from Japan in the women’s kumite final. Phuong surprisingly defeated world defending champion Miki 4-3 in the women’s 55kg category.

The Vietnamese track and field team ended a medal drought at the Games when they took home three silvers and two bronzes. Previously, Vietnam had never won a track and field medal at ASIAD.

Vu Thi Huong opened the new chapter for Vietnam’s athletics at ASIAD with a bronze medal in the women’s 100m event as she was clocked in 11’’43 behind Asian champion Fukushima Chisato from Japan with 11’’33 and Khubbieva Guzel from Uzbekistan with 11’’34.

Three days later, Huong earned the silver in the women’s 200m category with 23.74 seconds just behind Takahashi Momoko from Japan, who took the gold with 23.62 seconds.

Truong Thanh Hang as Southeast Asian defending champion took home two silvers. Hang came second in the final round of the women’s 800m with 2:00.91 minutes, breaking the SEA Games record. Earlier, Hang also won the silver in the women’s 1500m category.

Meanwhile, Vu Van Huyen also brought home the bronze in the men’s decathlon event after overcoming many strong opponents from Japan and China. Huyen finished third with 7,755 points taking the bronze in the event. Karpov Dmitriy from Kazakhstan, who held the Asian decathlon record, won the gold, collecting 8,026 points followed by Kim Kun Woo from South Korea with 7,808 points.

The rowing and wrestling teams also surprised with medals.

Rowing took two silver medals in the women’s double scull and lightweight quadruple scull events, with four of six rowers making their debut in the continental games while the wrestling team also won its first medal at ASIAD when 19-year-old Nguyen Thi Lua won a silver medal in the women’s 48kg freestyle event.

Vietnamese wushu fell short of their expected medal tally with five silvers and four bronzes but still held the most medals of the team.

The Vietnamese delegation had 261 athletes competing in 29 of the 42 sports at the Games.

In 1994 at the Hiroshima Asian Games in Japan, taekwondo artist Tran Quang Ha won the country’s first gold medal, while Pham Hong Ha and Tran Van Thong brought home two silver medals.

At the 15th Asian Games in Doha, Qatar in 2006, the country finished 19th with three gold, 13 silver and seven bronze medals. Briefly

Marquez stops Katsidis, demands third Pacquiao fight

Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez recovered from a third round knockdown to stop Australian Michael Katsidis in the ninth and retain his WBA and WBO lightweight titles in Las Vegas on Saturday.

Immediately after the victory, Marquez called for a third fight with eight-weight world champion Manny Pacquiao of the Philippines. Pacquiao and Marquez drew their first bout in 2004, and Pacquiao won a split decision in a rematch four years later.

“We know Pacquiao is avoiding us,” said Marquez afterwards. “A third fight is what the public wants.”

Karlsson beats Poulter in bizarre Dubai climax

Golfer Robert Karlsson extended his record as the most prolific Swedish winner on the European Tour when he beat Britain’s Ian Poulter in bizarre style in their Dubai World Championship playoff yesterday.

New European number one Martin Kaymer also landed a cheque for US$1.5 million after wrapping up his first money-list title.

The German finished well clear of closest rival Graeme McDowell after the pair tied for 13th place in the Dubai event.

Karlsson and Poulter made birdie fours on the first playoff hole and both players again made the green in three at the next attempt.

Poulter, however, incurred a one-stroke penalty when he dropped his ball on to his marker, causing the marker to flip over.

His 40-foot putt was therefore for a five rather than a four but he missed anyway and Karlsson rolled in his birdie effort from three feet to secure the 11th European victory of his career and a first prize of US$1.26 million.

Wildly inaccurate film on Uncle Ho criticized

Director and People’s Artist Dao Trong Khanh has written an article
slamming a documentary film called “Truth about Ho Chi Minh” which was
recently produced overseas by a group of exiles, for distorting the
history of President Ho Chi Minh.

First of all
Khanh, a respected director of documentary films in Vietnam, affirms
that “Truth about Ho Chi Minh”, though a documentary, contains no
documentary value because of patchy and poor images which were used
carelessly just to illustrate their quotations.

“With music and the opening made in a theoretical manner, the film
quoted Stephane Coustois’s saying that, ‘People say history is the
science of human misfortune and the century of bloody violence in which
we are living has confirmed this saying broadly.’ But the truth is,
history is not just like that. Unceasing efforts and creativity, the
non-stop struggle for progress, and the pursuit of freedom and happiness
are basics of miraculous historical movements in the noble spirit of
humanity, including the sacrifice of revolutionaries worldwide. The
ambiguous and one-sided way of presenting an issue in a gloomy and
tragic manner inevitably results in a one-sided interpretation of the
content of the film,” writes the director.

Khanh
further points out that the images of massacres introduced in the film
are in fact pictures and documentaries of the crimes committed by the
French colonialists and US aggressors against the Vietnamese people. But
in this film, their real origins are ignored and they are attributed to
patriotic resistance fighters and communist soldiers. In addition, a
line-up of anti-communist maniacs are used to stage “radiofilm”
interviews - monologues without any illustrations.

He writes, “It makes no sense at all when one after another characters
speak in a serious manner about President Ho Chi Minh’s birthday and
death date – facts that Vietnam has officially announced. Vu Ngu Chieu
and Tran Gia Phung have laid stress on a letter from Nguyen Tat Thanh
(Ho Chi Minh) asking for enrolment at a French school in 1912. It should
not be forgotten that during this period it was necessary to seek all
possible ways to help the country and the people.”

“Sophie
Quinn Judge, who lives in a capitalist society and does not understand
anything about revolutionary activities, made a wild guess about the
relationship between President Ho Chi Minh and other women like famous
revolutionary Nguyen Thi Minh Khai. ‘There seems to have been an affair
between the two,’ said Quinn in the film. This is not the way
researchers do their work. Researchers do not use the word ‘seems’,” the
director says, adding how can one believe in a researcher like Vu Ngu
Chieu who has wrapped himself up in foreign archives for many years
to engage only in gossip and other people’s private affairs that are
unrelated to history.

People’s Artist Khanh, who
himself made a documentary about President Ho Chi Minh, says when
compiling documents about the President he had a chance to read the
original copy of the “Prison Diary” poem collection but did not pay
attention to Uncle Ho’s handwritings on the cover: 1923-1933. After many
years, when some people showed interest in this matter, the then Vice
Director of the Ho Chi Minh museum Nguyen Huy Hoan said the note just to
mark the 10-year “big misfortune” period according to Uncle Ho’s
calculation, not the time he penned the poems, adding that people do not
understand this so tend to speculate.

Khanh said he
also knew about the meeting between poet Pavel Antolkolski, who
translated the “Prison Diary” poem collections into Russian, and
President Ho Chi Minh, as well as the meeting between the President and
R. Bershatsky when this poet visited Vietnam. During this meeting, with
his openness and in his usual modest manner, the President made coffee
for his guest and said, “We write poetry when we have free time. In
Vietnam , everybody writes poems,” he recalled. The President did not
think of himself as a poet but the whole world is captivated by his
eloquent verses. Against this honourable history, the sabotage and
slandering campaigns of exile groups overseas are so mean, Khanh said.

According to the People’s Artist, researching Ho Chi
Minh heritage and learning about his thoughts and morality is not only a
long and huge scientific research project but also a conscious
evolvement of a nation towards “The true, the good and the beautiful”.
He stresses that hatred, slander and fabrications reflects the
degradation in personality which goes against human beings’ spiritual
evolution and advancement, binding oneself and losing the one’s root.

“It is true that the life of President Ho Chi Minh is
a legend. The legend is always beautiful. It contains the mystery of
romantic spirit and the transcendence of human awareness about the
world. US journalist William J. Duiler had written in his book about
Ho Chi Minh: “All great people have an implicit mystery”. He cited
President Ho Chi Minh as saying in an interview with journalist Bernard
Fall that, “The elderly like to have a small mystery about them. I would
like to keep a little bit of mystery about myself. I believe you
understand what I said.”

The legend of Ho Chi Minh
will forever be treasured by mankind and mankind will always try to seek
more understanding about it, Director and People’s Artist Dao Trong
Khanh concluded./.

Calisto and players conferred overdue Labor Order

Coach Henrique Calisto and six players from the Vietnamese national football team were conferred Sunday the Labor Order, Third Class, a state-level honorary badge for their winning the AFF Cup 2008.

The Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) bestowed the honor on the Portuguese coach, striker Cong Vinh, half-backs Minh Phuong and Tai Em, midfielders Nhu Thanh and Phuoc Tu, and goalkeeper Hong Son for their winning the AFF Cup back in 2008 (Southeast Asia Football Championship).

VFF attributed the postponement in granting the honor to repeated delays in convening the national team.

In preparation for the tournament, the squad will have a practicing session today to review its formation for the last time. After that, Calisto will remove three players from the current roster to reduce the team to 22 players, the maximum allowed for each team.

Raging Nadal storms into semifinals

Rafael Nadal raised the temperature at the ATP World Tour Finals on Friday with a fiery defeat of Tomas Berdych and a rare flash of temper as a heavyweight semifinal line-up was completed.

The world number one looked unstoppable as he battered Berdych 7-6 6-1 to set up last four clash with home favorite Andy Murray before Novak Djokovic crushed a jaded Andy Roddick 6-2 6-3 in the final Group A action to book a meeting with Roger Federer.

Unlike last year when the event made its debut at the cavernous O2 Arena and virtually every match went the distance, this time there has been just one three-setter in the 12 matches so far, although Nadal's performances have stood out and not just because of the shocking pink shirt he has chosen to wear.

The 24-year-old spin king and the burly Berdych waged baseline warfare during a compelling 70-minute first set on Friday -- proof that after an 11-month slog and three grand slam titles Nadal's insatiable appetite for a scrap remains intact.

Just ask umpire Carlos Bernardes.

At 5-6, 15-15 Nadal blew his top when Berdych was awarded the point after the Czech successfully challenged an overrule by the Brazilian chair official, who deemed a backhand by the sixth seed had landed long.

When the Hawkeye video screen revealed the shot had kissed the baseline and the umpire awarded the point to Berdych, Nadal stormed to the chair and had a heated debate with the umpire and tournament supervisor Tom Barnes before returning to take out his rage on his opponent. He lost just one more game.

"He was wrong," Nadal pleaded later when calm had been restored. "That's something unbelievable. I was just asking Carlos what's happening. That's all."

Berdych stirred the pot when he accused the umpire of being "scared" of Nadal.

"It just shows how the referee is probably scared of him and just let him talk with him too long," Berdych, who lost to Nadal in the Wimbledon final, told reporters.

"I was waiting while he was talking for like three minutes. He was like sitting there and he's not going to play.

“It's not the mistake of Rafa. It's the mistake of the referee. He just needed to show him that it's not like he can do whatever he wants on the court."

Mind games

With Nadal and Federer, the only players here to win all three round-robin matches, in sublime form it would be fitting if they met in Sunday's final when a US$1.6 million jackpot could be up for grabs.

Murray and Djokovic will have other ideas even if the Briton appeared to have written off his chances after qualifying on Thursday. Nadal was not buying the mind games though.

"My only chance to win is play my best tennis and wait and hope Andy doesn't play his highest level," Nadal said after protesting his innocence over the controversy against Berdych. "The pressure is back on him now."

While the day's early action bristled with intensity and contained the best tennis of the week, the evening clash between Djokovic and Roddick was memorable mainly for the Serb walking on to court wearing a comedy eye patch.

Djokovic was struck by contact lens problems during his defeat by Nadal on Wednesday but after revealing his well-known sense of humor he got down to business and put Roddick out of his misery in 65 minutes.

"I got together with my team and glued my lenses in tonight," the 23-year-old joked on court when the interviewer asked him about his pirate's patch.

On a more serious note he said he was locking horns with Federer. "It's a great achievement that I already reached the semifinal and I will try to give my best tomorrow night.

"It's going to come down to maybe a couple of points."

The doubles semifinals are also finalized with American world number one pair Bob and Mike Bryan taking on Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic and Poles Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski up against Max Mirnyi and Mahesh Bhupathi.

Viet Nam's U-16 women's football team meet Iran in the opening match of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Championship qualifiers at Bangkok's Rajamangala Stadium next Thursday.

The team, who have been training in the mountainous town of Tam Dao, 65km west of Ha Noi, will play in group A against Thailand, Myanmar, Chinese Taipei and Iran between December 2-12.

The top two teams will qualify for the final.

AFF Cup tickets discounted

Tickets for group B matches at the ASEAN Football Federation, AFF-Suzuki Cup will go on sale at Ha Noi's My Dinh and Hang Day stadiums today.

The organising committee has reduced ticket prices from VND180,000-VND80,000 to VND150,000-VND50,000 to lure more fans.

Viet Nam will play Myanmar, Singapore and the Philippines in group B at My Dinh Stadium from December 2-8.

Last week, the AFF decided to change the venue for the competition's second pitch from Ha Noi's Hang Day Stadium to Nam Dinh's Thien Truong Stadium.

Matches between Viet Nam and Singapore and Myanmar and the Philippines on December 8 will take place concurrently at the two stadiums.

Tickets can be purchased by visiting www.aleale.com.vn.

In the final match between Viet Nam and Thailand two years ago, Vietnamese fans had to fork out up to VND3 million (US$150) to touts for tickets – a significant increase on the face value of VND80,000 ($4). — VNS

HCM CITY — The Olympics sports of athletics, rowing, and wrestling shined at the 2010 Asian Games (ASIAD) in Guangzhou, China, providing moments for sports fans to savour after Viet Nam won more medals than in previous years.

With only one day to go, Viet Nam has won 33 medals of all types at the ASIAD 2010, but the country's current 23rd place on the medal tally is the second worst place Viet Nam has had since the country returned to the continental games in 1982.

Viet Nam did not compete at ASIAD 1986 in Seoul, South Korea, while Viet Nam's worst performance was at ASIAD 1990 in Beijing, China, when it did not win any medals.

Teenager Le Bich Phuong yesterday morning grabbed front-page headlines of both major newswires and printed newspapers nationwide when she ended the gold drought for the country at ASIAD and lifted the country four spots in the medal tally on Thursday.

The most noticeable achievement at ASIAD, however, was the phenomenal success in athletics and the unexpected medals from rowing and wrestling.

High marks

Like previous Asian Games, Vietnamese athletics teams came to the Asian Games in Guangzhou to compete and achieve the best possible result, or hope for at least a bronze medal.

"I came to the games with the hope for a bronze medal in the 100m event and a slight hope for the 200m event," said Vu Thi Huong, sprint queen of Southeast Asia.

But the team made a historic breakthrough when it won five medals, all of them in important events in athletics. Previously, Viet Nam had never won an athletics medal at ASIAD.

Vu Thi Huong opened the historic page for Viet Nam's athletics at ASIAD with a bronze medal in the women's 100m event on Tuesday.

One day later, Truong Thanh Hang, the medium-distance top runner in Southeast Asia, bettered Huong's achievement with a silver medal in the women's 1,500m.

The success reached a climax on Thursday when Huong and Hang won silvers in the women's 200m and 800m events, while Vu Van Huyen also brought home a bronze in the men's decathlon event after overcoming many powerhouses, including Japan and China.

Success gave confidence to the athletes and changed the sports officials' mentality towards Vietnamese athletes' opportunities in athletics at ASIAD.

"My bronze proved that athletes from Southeast Asia can compete with other athletes from across Asia," Huyen said.

"Athletics achieved a breakthrough at ASIAD this year and this proved that it was not a matter of small or big size. It showed how building a good training programme and talented athletes matter to our sport at the moment," said Le Quy Phuong, head of Viet Nam's sports delegation at ASIAD.

Rowing took sports supporters by surprise with two silver medals in the women's double scull and lightweight quadruple scull events, with four of six rowers making their debut in the continental games.

"The thing that makes us happy after winning medals at ASIAD is that more people know about us and our rowing club. We are very happy about that," said rower Tran Thi Sam.

Wrestling also won its first medal at ASIAD when 19-year-old Nguyen Thi Lua won a silver medal in the women's 48kg freestyle event.

Viet Nam's women's chess team ended with a bronze medal at the Asian Games after a loss yesterday to eventual gold-medal winner, China.

Sprinter Vu Thi Huong and her team-mates failed to finish in top three in the women's 4x100m relay.

Their time was 44.77 seconds.

Thailand won in 44.09, ahead of China (44.22 and Japan (44.41).

Viet Nam has won one gold, 17 silver and 15 bronze medals to rank 23rd on the medals table. — VNS

HA NOI — Karate artist Le Bich Phuong won a gold medal in the women's under-55kg class at the Asian Games yesterday, the first gold for Viet Nam after 13 days of competition.

Phuong was not a gold medal hope and surprised Vietnamese coaching staff by beating Japan's world champion Kobayashi Miki 4-3 in the final at Guangdong Gymnasium to win her first ever gold.

The 18-year-old fought superbly after cruising past South Korea's Ahn Tae-eun, Uzbekistan's Niyazova Regina and Macau's Lao Un Ieng before edging past her Japanese opponent in the final.

"I'm so happy to beat the world champion and take the first gold for Viet Nam at the Asian Games," Phuong said after the final.

"I dedicate the gold to all the Vietnamese people, who have supported us at Asia's biggest sporting event," she added.

Earlier, Phuong's teammate Tran Duc Minh bagged a bronze medal in the men's under-60kg division.

Runners Truong Thanh Hang and Vu Thi Huong added two more silvers for Viet Nam on the 13th day, finishing second in the women's 800m and 200m, respectively.

Hang, who bagged a silver medal in the women's 1,500m on Tuesday, ran a time of 2:00:91, just six tenths of a second behind Kazakhstan's Matko Margarita, who won the gold.

India's Lukka Tintu came in with 2:01:36 to take bronze.

Sprinter Huong, who set a milestone for Vietnamese athletics at ASIAD with a bronze medal in the women's 100m, managed a time of 23.74sec to finish second in the 200m yesterday.

Japan's Fukushima Chisato won the gold in 23.62sec.

Huong and her teammates compete in the 4x100m final today on the penultimate day of the Games.

Yesterday's competition also saw Vietnamese wrestler Nguyen Thi Lua bagging a silver medal in the women's 48kg freestyle after a 5-0 defeat to North Korea's So Sim-hyang in the final.
