Jazz group prove their Chopin chops

Renowned Polish jazz musician Jarek Smietana will play a jazz concert at the Hanoi Opera House on Nov. 18.

Smietana won the Polish Music Award "Fryderyk" in 1998.

He has composed nearly 200 songs and was the leader of three musical
groups – Sounds, Symphonic Sound Orchestra, and Polish Jazz Stars Band,
which gathers top Polish jazz musicians. He also is a co-leader of the
very famous Namyslowski-Smietana Quartet.

Throughout his
musical career he has played with various great artists, such as Art
Farmer, Freddie Hubbard, Eddie Henderson, Joe Zawinul, Gary Bartz, and
Carter Jefferson.

Smietana will be joined by three other
Polish musicians in Hanoi , drummer Adam Czerwinski, pianist and
keyboardist Seb Bernatowicz, and bass guitarist Tomasz Kupiec.

Czerwinski, who graduated from a music school in Gdansk , has been
one of the best Polish jazz drummers for over 15 years. He has been
involved with many major Polish jazz groups, and became a member of
Smietana's group in 1991.

Bernatowicz graduated from the
Cracow Academy of Music and works as a composer and arranger as well as a
pianist and keyboardist. He is the leader of some popular jazz groups
in his country, including Seb Bernatowicz Trio, Jazz fusion Eastcom, and
Jazzelectric.

The prize-winning bass guitarist, Kupiec,
has collaborated with some distinguished European jazz musicians like
violinists Vadim Brodzki and Nigel Kennedy.

The quartet
will perform 11 repertoires at the concert, three of which were written
by Smietana. His compositions include Kite Dance, My Love and
Inspiration, and Mr Soul.

The concert will also feature compositions by Frederic Chopin and other Polish composers.

Before the concert at the Opera House, the quartet will perform for a
limited audience at the Latino Bar in the Melia Hanoi Hotel on Nov. 16.

Organised by the Polish Embassy in Vietnam , the concert is to
celebrate the 92nd anniversary of the Polish Independence Day and
Chopin's 200th birthday./.

HCMC - Vietnam’s U-23 football team were defeated 2-6 by Turkmenistan in the second game of the men’s football event in the 16th Asian Games (ASIAD) at Guangdong People’s Stadium on Wednesday, while Iran beat Bahrain 1-0 in their second game of Group B.

Vietnam’s coach Phan Thanh Hung wanted his side to grasp their place in the next round with a positive performance against Turkmenistan. Hung said before the game that he believed his players would beat their opponents.

Prior to the game, the Vietnamese side defeated Bahrain 3-1 in the opener while Turkmenistan suffered 1-4 loss to powerhouse Iran in their opening game.

The Vietnamese side would be keen to get the group’s second spot and their players were confident of victory against their rivals. Moreover, coach Phan Thanh Hung’s players just needed a draw for reaching the next round.

The Vietnamese side began the game with a changed lineup after a 3-1 win over Bahrain U23 in their opener. Defender Nguyen Thanh Long Giang made his debut at the tournament.

Vietnam had better scoring opportunities in the first minutes of the half, as forwarders Nguyen Ngoc Dieu and Pham Thanh Luong nearly opened for their team in the fifth and sixth minutes but their kicks crossed over the goalpost.

Turkmenistan surprisingly took an advance in the 17th minute when Serdar scored for the Western Asian side in a rapid attack. Turkmenistan increased pressure  after the first goal and Aleksandr easily defeated Vietnamese goalie Bui Tan Truong  in the 24th minute, ending the first half with 2-0.

Turkmenistan dominated ball possession throughout the second half while the home side relied on rare counter attacks. Belyh Maksim netted for his team with a header just four minutes into the second half and then Arslanmyrat helped the opponents advance further again in the 62nd minute.

Aleksadr scored his second goal in the 73rd minute before Arslanmyrat scored the sixth goal for Turkmenistan in the 82nd minute, giving his team the first victory in the group of the competition.

Vietnam controlled the ball in the last minutes as their forwarders put more pressure on their opponents. Nguyen Trong Hoang and Nguyen Anh Duc scored for the Vietnamese side in the 85th and 87th minutes but it was too late to level the scoring gap.

Iran confirmed their place in the last 16 round of the men’s football event in the ASIAD as they secured Group B’s top spot with six points from first two wins. Turkmenistan and Vietnam have three points from one win and one loss but the Western Asian side rank second thank to the goal difference. Bottom-placed  Bahrain have no point from two games.

With a victory, Turkmenistan kept their hope of reaching the next round as they will play Bahrain in the final game on Saturday while Vietnam face huge tasks in their group competition as they will face leaders Iran in the final game on the same day.

Int’l workshop on Hanoi takes place in France

A two-day workshop themed, “Thousand year history of Hanoi ” was held
in the French capital of Paris from November 8-9.

Attending the workshop were scholars, scientists and Vietnam ’s
history researchers from many universities in Asia, Europe and the
United States .

Through scientific reports, images
and historical documentary films on Hanoi, Vietnamese and foreign
scientists have highlighted Hanoi’s specific characteristics through
time as well as depicted Vietnam’s strength and efforts in fighting
foreign invaders.

Professor of Paris University 7
Emmanuel Poisson, an expert in researching Vietnam ’s history from the
15 th – 17 th centuries, said this event was a good opportunity for
scholars and scientists to acknowledge and precisely assess Hanoi ’s
importance in developing socio-economic, cooperation relations in many
areas of life.

In the framework of the workshop, a
round-table conference with the theme, “French insights into Hanoi ,
from war city to peace city”./.

Restored 17th century dinh opens

A 17th century
communal house (dinh) on the outskirts of Hanoi that won the highest prize in
the heritage preservation category at the International Union of Architects in
Xi'an, China, last month, has officially reopened after months of restoration.

"The model
restoration project aimed to duplicate as best as possible the original
design," said Tran Lam Ben from the Cultural Heritage Department.
"However, there has been some improper restoration work, which we will ask
the workers to fix later."

According to
architect Le Thanh Vinh, who headed the restoration team, the work was
extremely intricate.

"We first had
to conduct very careful research on all the relics to gauge what sort of
condition they were in," he said.

Ultra-sound equipment
was used to check the condition of the house's wooden pillars, he said.

Chu Quyen Communal
House's 48 wooden pillars were damaged by weathering. However, only two had to
be replaced, Vinh said.

The original house
roof was made up of 51 different kinds of tiles. Restorers said 48,000 of the
original tiles were saved. Those that needed to be replaced were produced using
traditional methods of baking clay over straw.

Because of efforts
to duplicate the original design, the work took twice as long as normal, Vinh
said.

The restoration beat
33 entries from 14 countries in the Asia Pacific region to win the architects'
award – the first Vietnam
has won.

The communal house,
more commonly referred to as the Chang Communal House, is in Hanoi's Ba Vi district. It consists of a
room, largely constructed of wood, for worship.

The house was
recognised as a historical site in 1962. Restoration on the house began in
2007.

Tran Chien Thang, Deputy Minister of Culture,
said the project would serve as the standard for other restoration work./.

U-23s walloped as defence fails

Vietnam's under-23s were stunned by Turkmenistan 6-2 in their second
match in the Asian Games on Nov. 10.

The loss saw Vietnam, who beat Bahrain 3-1 on Nov. 8, plunge to
third place in Group B.

Turkmenistan, who lost 4-1 to Iran,
stand second; ahead of Vietnam
with a better goal difference.

Vietnam would have qualified for the last 16 if they had beaten Turkmenistan in
the match at Guangdong People's Stadium on Nov. 10. But the Vietnamese team
defence collapsed in their worst performance in recent years, while the
strikers missed a dozen clear-cut chances to score before half time.

The central Asian
team took a first half 2-0 lead after Serda and Aleksandra waltzed through the
Vietnamese back four.

Vietnam's Pham Thanh Luong, Ngoc Dieu and Anh Duc
all failed to make their close-range chances count.

Turkmenistan nullified Vietnam's
U-23s by bypassing midfield with a judicious use of the long ball, and stoutly
defended their lead through to half time.

Five minutes into
the second half, Belyh Maksim headed home the third goal for the central Asian
team from a corner kick before Arslanmyrat broke down the left flank to net the
ball on the 60th minute mark.

Arslanmyrat and his
team-mate Aleksandr Bolyan both unmarked, scored on the 72nd and 82nd minute.

Trong Hoang pulled
back a goal for Vietnam
on the 85th minute, before Anh Duc netted the ball with a close finish.

Duc also missed five
goal scoring chances in the second half.

Iran
played Bahrain
in a late match on Nov. 10.

Vietnam must win defeat powerhouses Iran in their last match on Nov. 13
if they want to qualify for the knock-out round.

Twenty-four teams are taking part in the
under-23s tournament, with the top two and four of the best third-placed sides
from the six groups advancing to the final 16./.
