The Socceroos to beat hosts Vietnam; coach

Australia will win hosts Vietnam 1-0 on Wednesday at the Thang Long-Hanoi Football Cup when they play their second match-day in Hanoi, said Australia’s coach Aurelio Vidmar.

In the opening day on Monday of the four-team tournament, Australia was defeated 1-0 by the North Korea and Vietnam thrashed Kuwait 3-0.

“My biggest concern is hot weather here, that may badly affect the Socceroos,” Vidmar told Tuoi Tre. “We will perform an exciting game today.”

After the loss over the North Korea, the Socceroos have made no training since. On Tuesday, the players and team managers relaxed in swimming pool and guided children at Hanoi SOS Village playing football.

Meanwhile, hard-working players of the North Korean side keep on encamping in the last three days since they arrived in Vietnam.

Besides training on field and having meals, they all keep on camping in hotel and refuse to reply the media.

The event, which is held to celebrate the 1,000th anniversary of the Thang Long–Hanoi, has four teams competing in single round robin format with the champions to pocket US$20,000. Two runners-up get $10,000 and $5,000 respectively.

Japanese TV highlights VN’s ancient Oc Eo culture

The Japanese TV channel BS, is filming a documentary on the ancient Oc
Eo culture in the Mekong Delta province of An Giang to highlight its
unique cultural characteristics, according to the Ministry of Culture,
Sports and Tourism (MoCST).

As part of the project, from September 19-29, the film group will shoot
scenes in Ho Chi Minh City, Quang Nam and An Giang provinces where the
Oc Eo culture is found. The Japanese funded film will be approved by the
MoCST before it is shown in Japan.

Discovered by a
French scholar Louis Malleret and made public in 1944, the Oc Eo culture
grew and developed in the southern delta, largely in An Giang, from the
first to the sixth century AD.

In addition to An
Giang, the scientists have discovered over 100 sites belonging to Oc Eo
culture across the Mekong Delta provinces and parts of the south-eastern
region with more than 50,000 artefacts made from various materials such
as terra-cotta, stone, agate and metal.

The most common is ceramics, reflecting the cultural identity and origin of the culture.

Vietnam is currently proposing UNESCO recognise the ancient Oc Eo culture as a cultural heritage./.

Chess players hunt for medals

Vietnam is expecting to win a silver medal in the women's Chinese
chess (xiangqi) at the 16th Asian Games (ASIAD) in Guangzhou, China, in November, said coach Hoang Dinh Hong.

Hong also hopes the men will take home at least a bronze medal.

Eleven chess masters have been undergoing intensive training in HCM
City for the tournament, which includes Chinese chess for the first
time – since early May. They have been competing with teams from Dong
Thap and Khanh Hoa provinces.

Their final test will be at the National Sports Meet in Da Nang city next month.

National senior master Ngo Lan Huong, who is the Asian Indoor Games
defending champion, is favourite to take the Asian Games' women's berth.

Masters Nguyen Thanh Bao, Lai Ly Huynh, Trenh A Sang and Nguyen Hoang Lam will be vying for the two slots in the men's team.

"This year ASIAD only features women's and men's individual events.
Unfortunately, that puts Vietnam at a disadvantage because we have
the strongest team in the world," Hong said.

At this year's ASIAD, Viet Nam 's main rival will be China .

"Our difficulty is not the quality of our players but their lack of
competition experience. Chinese players regularly attend at least 10
events a year, while our players attend just a handful," the team coach
said.

Lan Huong's chief rivals will be Wang Lin Na, the China national champion, and Yang Dan.

Hong said that despite their youth, the two Chinese masters are more
talented than former world champion Yu Yungquin, also from China ,
whom Lan Huong has met several times.

Kao Yiping, from Chinese Taipei, is also a major threat. She took the silver medal at the Asian championship.

On the men's side, chief rivals will be China 's national champion Hsu
Yinchuan and Hsiang Chuan, who has the highest elo rating; Wu Kueilin
of Chinese Taipei, who came fifth at the world championship; and
Singapore 's Wo Zonghan, the world No 6./.

Global video project tours Vietnam

Project 35, an international exhibition of video works selected by 35
curators around the world, will be launched by Independent Curators
International (ICI) on Sept.23 and is expected to attract audiences in
Hanoi, Hue and HCM City.

Each of the curators were
invited to choose one work from an artist they think is important for
audiences from around the world to experience. The resulting video
selections are divided into four parts that will play over the period of
one year.

The selections will also be presented
simultaneously in an increasing number of venues world wide. The
project, which was initiated by ICI in New York , has made its way to
Vietnam thanks to San Art, the country's most active independent art
space.

Project 35 celebrates ICI's 35-year life span
as an organisation that connects emerging and established curators,
artists and institutions, and fosters the building of international
networks.

The exhibition opens with videos focusing on
wide-ranging and controversial subject matter, including the uprisings
and protests in post-colonial South Africa , the urban roads of
modern-day HCM City , and the crime-filled streets of Bogota ,
Colombia .

Screenings are free and the first four
screenings will take place simultaneously in Hanoi 's Goethe Institute,
HCM City 's Cafe Cao Minh and Hue 's New Arts Space beginning at
6.30pm on Sept. 22.

The first session offers nine
works, including the works of Vietnamse artists Tuan Andrew Nguyen and
Ha Thuc Phu Nam , both of whom currently live and work in HCM City
. The two artists were selected by HCM City-based curator and San Art
director Zoe Butt.

Other artists were selected by the
director of Objectif Exhibitions, Mai Abu El Dahab; the chief curator of
the Mori Art Musuem in Tokyo, Mami Kataoka; an adjunct curator at the
University of California Berkeley Art Museum and the Pacific Film
Archive, Constance Lewallen; the artistic director of Philagrafika 2010,
Jose Roca and senior lecturer and head of the Fine Arts Studio Practice
in the Department of Visual Arts at the University of Stellenbosch,
South Africa, Kathryn Smith.

The selected works will
demonstrate the diversity of content and style that the single-channel
video can captures, including You Tube-style narrative to documentary
format to clay-mation to digital animation. The videos show a variety of
approaches from creating performance installations to reformatting a
Walt Disney classic.

The project has already been
screened in Albania , Mexico , Sweden and the US among others,
and will continue to expand as more venues and chapters in the video
series emerge. The project is expected to screen in 19 countries over
the course of 2010 and 2011./.

France must change criteria to develop youngsters

France, who suffered a humiliating exit from the World Cup, must overhaul their selection policies for developing young talent, new coach Laurent Blanc said on Tuesday.

Blanc told reporters at a UEFA conference in Madrid that the once mighty French side must put more emphasis on technical ability rather than physical power if they were to restore their status.

He said Spanish World Cup winners like Xavi and Andres Iniesta, two of the most gifted creative midfielders in the world game, might not have been successful in French soccer because of their slender physique.

"Selection criteria at one time (in France) were for big players whereas in Spain it's the football that counts, the technical qualities," Blanc said.

"The criteria are not good enough in France -- we need other ones," he added.

"Players like Xavi and Iniesta, in France they would have a hard time getting through."

Blanc took over from Raymond Domenech after Les Bleus were knocked out of the World Cup and he has the task of rebuilding confidence and restoring pride in a squad still reeling from an ugly spat between players and management at the tournament in South Africa.

France's Euro 2012 qualifying campaign got off to a poor start with a surprise 1-0 home defeat to Belarus but they recovered to beat Bosnia 2-0 in Sarajevo in their second match.

Blanc, who played for clubs including Barcelona, Olympique Marseille, Inter Milan and Manchester United, said national team coaches should follow Spain's example if they wanted to be successful, with the focus on technique more than strength.

"Spanish football is profiting from the healthy state of its clubs (like Barcelona)," he added. "It's a good example to follow for all football nations."

Ronaldo inspires Real to 3-0 win over Espanyol

Cristiano Ronaldo scored a penalty and created a goal for Gonzalo Higuain to inspire Real Madrid to a lethargic but ultimately comfortable 3-0 La Liga win over Espanyol on Tuesday.

It was the Portuguese forward's first goal of the season and a third consecutive league victory for Real that lifted them to the top of the table ahead of Wednesday's matches.

Both teams had a player sent off with around half an hour remaining and Espanyol were reduced to nine late on.

Real coach Jose Mourinho criticised the poor state of the pitch after the game and also complained about the packed calendar, Tuesday's match coming after his players were in action in the Champions League on Wednesday and in La Liga on Saturday.

"All things considered I am coming away satisfied because it's not easy playing on a potato field, it's not easy playing every two days and it's not easy playing an opponent who has nothing to lose," the Portuguese said at a news conference.

"Putting all those factors together and despite the fact that my team did not play a good match I am satisfied," he added. "We have to improve but above all we need to rest."

Solid start

The visitors began brightly on a pleasantly warm night at the Bernabeu and an unmarked Jose Callejon volleyed just wide of Iker Casillas's goal in the sixth minute.

Real responded immediately when Mesut Ozil sent Angel Di Maria clear and the Argentina winger's curled strike was palmed narrowly over the crossbar by goalkeeper Carlos Kameni.

Espanyol's solid start was spoiled just before the half hour when Luis Garcia handled a Ronaldo free kick in the wall and the referee pointed to the spot.

The Portuguese scored with his first attempt but was ordered to retake for what appeared to be encroachment into the area.

Espanyol made an energetic bid for an equaliser in the early stages of the second period and the impressive Joan Verdu forced a sharp save from Casillas in the 53rd.

Real central defender Pepe then picked up two yellow cards in quick succession and Ernesto Galan was shown a straight red shortly after when he chopped down Ronaldo.

The game opened up and both teams had chances before Ronaldo released Higuain with a fine through ball and he beat Kameni with a powerful low shot.

France striker Karim Benzema replaced Higuain and made it 3-0 with almost his first touch, hooking the ball into the net from inside the area.

Espanyol defender Juan Forlin was dismissed late on after picking up a second yellow, apparently for dissent.

No adjectives

Espanyol coach Mauricio Pochettino was clearly furious with the referee after the match but just about managed to restrain himself at his post-match news conference.

"I am not going to give an opinion about the referee, I won't label him with any adjectives," he said. "The evidence and the television footage is there for all to see. All of Europe and the whole world saw what happened. On days like this you don't feel like talking about football. It's useless."

In the earlier kickoffs, David Lopez put Athletic Bilbao ahead against visiting Real Mallorca just before halftime, Mikel San Jose netted a 62nd-minute penalty and Inigo Perez scored in added time to give the Basque club a 3-0 win.

Osasuna clinched their first victory of the season, coming from behind to beat promoted Real Sociedad 3-1 thanks to goals from Walter Pandiani, Javier Camunas and Carlos Aranda after Raul Tamudo had given Sociedad the lead in the 16th minute.

Champions Barcelona will be without Lionel Messi when they host Sporting Gijon on Wednesday (1800 GMT) while Valencia can climb back to the top with a win at home to Atletico Madrid.

Spurs pay the penalty as Arsenal win 4-1

Samir Nasri slotted home two extra-time penalties in quick succession to send Arsenal through to the last 16 of the English League Cup with a 4-1 rout of North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday.

League One (third division) Brentford served up the night's big upset and triggered scenes of jubilation in west London by knocking out Premier League Everton 4-3 on penalties after holding the visitors 1-1 in normal time.

With the score also 1-1 after the 90 minutes at White Hart Lane, French midfielder Nasri overcame his own superstition to shatter Spurs' hopes with two spot kicks in the space of three minutes early in extra time.

"He had a superstition to think that when the penalty is made on you, not to take it," said Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger after his club's biggest win at White Hart Lane in 32 years.

"I tried to prove to him that it's only based on fear. It's gone tonight...he realises now it was a bad superstition."

The first penalty was awarded after Nasri was tugged by Sebastien Bassong and the second when Steven Caulker fouled Marouane Chamakh.

Second-half substitute Andrey Arshavin delivered the final blow with a low shot from the edge of the box.

"I thought the first one (penalty) was harsh," said Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp. "Really, I think he's dived. The second one was a blatant penalty."

Other upset

Second division Burnley savoured the night's other upset with a 1-0 home win over their former manager Owen Coyle's Premier League Bolton Wanderers.

Struggling West Ham United won 2-1 at Premier League rivals Sunderland and, in another all top-flight clash, Stoke City beat Fulham 2-0, while Birmingham City saw off third division Milton Keynes Dons 3-1. Arsenal were by far the better team in the first half against Spurs and went ahead in the 15th minute with England under-21 international Henri Lansbury scoring his first senior goal for the club.

The arrival of Robbie Keane after the break revived Spurs and the Irishman equalised just three minutes into the second half with a shot that rolled into the net despite goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski getting his hands to the ball.

Keane could have wrapped it up for the hosts in the 83rd when he smacked a shot against the left upright.

The match started after a minute's applause for former England international Bobby Smith, centre-forward in Tottenham's double-winning side of 1960-61, who died on Saturday aged 77.

Wenger, serving a one-match touchline ban for his behaviour at Sunderland on Saturday, watched from the directors' box and had to resort to texting instructions to the dugout.
