Quoc leads medal hopes at SEA table tennis tourney

Olympian Doan Kien Quoc and his team-mates Tran Tuan Quynh, Nguyen Nam
Hai and rising star Dinh Quang Linh will all compete in the All-Stars
Southeast Asian Table Tennis Championship starting on September 11 in
Hai Duong city.

Quoc, who qualified for the second round
at the Beijing Olympics, will lead the Vietnamese in a tough contest
against top tour athletes from Singapore and Thailand in the
men's singles.

Known for his left-hand smashes, the
31-year-old is hoping to be on top form in what could be the most
important game of the year.

"Quoc has always been a key
member for Vietnam . He has gained experience in world competitions.
But Tuan Quynh and Quang Linh have also won medals in regional
contests," said Vietnam Table Tennis Federation official Nguyen Duc
Long.

"The tournament, which is being held the first time,
is a crucial test for our players, who've lacked tough competition
throughout the year," Long added.

In the women's division,
the hosts will display their power with top-form sisters Mai Hoang My
Trang and Mai Xuan Hang and teenager Nguyen Thi Viet Linh.

Linh, 16, who won the U15 girls' singles in the Southeast Asia junior
championships in Thailand last year, begins her first competition at
a senior tourney.

As scheduled, athletes will compete in
the men's and women's eight group round-robin competition at Hai Duong's
2,000-seat Gymnasium.

The two top players from each group will qualify for the quarter-finals.

"We're ready to host the tournament. The gymnasium, which was built for
the Southeast Asian Games in 2003 and upgraded last year, will be an
ideal venue for the biggest table tennis event of the year," said
director of Hai Duong gymnasium Nguyen Van Thanh.

Vietnam will send a 24-member squad to compete in the two-day event, which the country will host for the first time.

Quynh was the first Vietnamese player to win the Southeast Asian Championship in 2002./.

Sports kept me out of trouble: Olympic champion

2010 Youth Olympic Games weightlifting champion Thach Kim Tuan, 16, talked to Tuoi Tre last week about his humble beginnings and how the athletic career enabled him to help his family and stay off the streets.

Did you expect you were going to get a gold medal ahead of the games?

I thought I could clinch a bronze as, you know, Olympic Games always attract many strong opponents.

So, I was very surprised and extremely happy to win the gold [after conquering the men’s 56kg clean and jerk event with 256kg at the August 13-26 Youth Olympic Games].

Can you tell us about your life?

I dropped out of school when I was in the sixth grade and started training in weightlifting five years ago.

I was recruited in the national team and began earning a monthly salary of VND750,000 (US$39.5). I gave it all to my eldest sister to care for our family of four.

[Tuan was one of 4 brothers and sisters born in the central province of Binh Thuan into a family of very humble means. He lost his parents when he was 3 and the four moved to Ho Chi Minh City to work as street vendors.]

I’ve given weightlifting my best and I don’t regret leaving school early as I was able to help my brothers and sister.

In addition to the gold medal in Singapore, a gold and two silvers at the Junior Asia Championships in the United Arab Emirates and three silver medals at the Junior World Championships in Thailand last year, these competitions earned me a combined VND300 million ($15,800) in cash prizes.

I give my sister my entire current salary of VND11.25 million ($592) a month to save to buy a house in the city.

[The champion and three of his brothers and sisters are now living in a rented house].

What are your current goals?

I want to return to school and improve my academic skills to better comprehend sports lessons as I am planning to become a weightlifting coach later.

I also want more victories at higher tournaments in the world as the Asian Olympic Games and the World Olympic Games.

What lesson has life taught you?

I think I am lucky that sports kept me out of trouble. Many children with similar family circumstances have become street kids.

I have never gotten involved in any street-fight.

Clijsters and Roddick sail through at US Open

Kim Clijsters made a triumphant return to the US Open on Monday, capping her belated maiden appearance as a defending grand slam champion with a straight sets win over Hungarian Greta Arn.

Clijsters recovered from a brief lapse in concentration in the second set to win 6-0 7-5 at the start of a busy first day at Flushing Meadows featuring five former US Open winners.

American Andy Roddick, champion in 2003, celebrated his 28th birthday at Arthur Ashe Stadium with a 6-3 6-2 6-2 romp of France's Stephane Robert, clearing the way for Roger Federer and Venus Williams to take the spotlight in the night matches.

Clijsters was not at her best against Arn, going 4-0 behind in the second set, but managed to dig herself out of trouble as she finally walked on the Arthur Ashe Stadium court as the defending champion.

It had been a long time coming for the second seed but she said the wait was worth it.

"Just to come out there and defend my title... I've never been in that position," she said. "It couldn't have come any faster.”

“I wanted it to happen for a while, and I was just excited to go out there."

Clijsters won the title for the first time in 2005 but missed the next three years, initially through a wrist injury and then when she took time off to start a family, before her fairytale comeback last year to capture a second crown.

Roddick, returning to the game from an injury-sapping illness, looked a picture of health in a straight sets win over Robert as the last grand slam of the season began under brilliant blue skies and stifling summer heat.

"Conditions are a little tricky out there,” said Roddick, who fired just eight aces. “The wind blows a little out there.”

Few surprises

Five-time champion Federer and two-time winner Williams were scheduled to start their tournaments in the featured night session while Australia's Lleyton Hewitt, the 2001 champion, was booked to open his tourney inside the Louis Armstrong stadium.

The notable absentees from the list of former champions were the 2009 men's winner Juan Martin Del Potro, who withdrew because of a long-term injury, and Serena Williams, who withdrew after slicing her foot on broken glass in July.

The opening skirmishes produced few real surprises with Chile's Fernando Gonzalez, the 2007 Australian Open runner-up, the first seed to make an early exit. He retired from his match with Croatian qualifier Ivan Dodig because of a knee injury.

Sweden's two-time French Open finalist Robin Soderling was lucky not to lose to another qualifier before he regained his composure to beat Austria's Andreas Haider-Maurer 7-5 6-3 6-7 5-7 6-4.

Italy's reigning French Open winner Francesca Schiavone and Russian baseliner Nikolay Davydenko both made light work of their first round opponents.

Schiavone barely broke a sweat as she eased past Japan's Ayumi Morita 6-1 6-0 in under an hour while Davydenko, a two-time semifinalist in New York, was not tested in his 6-4 6-1 6-3 victory over American Michael Russell.

Unseeded American teenager Melanie Oudin also made a flying start after she opened proceedings on center court following her unexpected run to the quarterfinals last year.

Oudin has struggled to reach those dizzy heights this year, winning just one match at the year's three other grand slams, but the familiarity of the US Open hard courts brought out her best as she dumped Ukrainian qualifier Olga Savchuk 6-3 6-0.

"It's a real honor to get to start the US Open off on Ashe, first match," Oudin said. "I thought it was pretty cool, I didn't expect that."

Nghe An won the 2010 National Cup trophy after beating Hoang Anh Gia Lai (HAGL) in a match under a heavy rain at HCMC’s Thong Nhat Stadium on Saturday.

Nghe An didn’t have the service of their best Croatian striker Vidovic due to injury, but the team proved lucky.

Nigerian striker Abdulrazak M. Ekpoki enjoyed a nice header off a corner kick to help Nghe An take the lead midway through the first half.

After the opener, Nghe An had another advantage when rain began to pour, flooding the field.

HAGL, who hail from the Central Highlands slogged through the rain. Under the unfamiliar weather conditions, Coach Kiatisuk Senamuang’s players faltered

As the game drew to an end, HAGL played hard but failed to capitalize on the few opportunities.

Kiatisuk said after the match, “We prepared very well for this game but unexpectedly the weather spoiled everything.”

HAGL team manager Nguyen Tan Anh said, “We expected a win and the players did their best; but HAGL couldn’t play well under the heavy rain. I congratulate Nghe An anyway. They had reasonable strategies and adapted to the situation better than us.”

Local broadcasters to stop airing EPL Sunday matches

HCMC - Local broadcasters, who have not hold the exclusive broadcasting rights of the English Premier League (EPL) in Vietnam, will stop airing EPL Sunday matches, Luu Vu Hai, chief of MoIC’s Radio, Television, and Electronic Information Department had concluded after its meeting with K+ channel and MP & Silva last week.

On behalf of the Ministry of Information and Communications (MoIC), Hai has certified that MP & Silva distributed the exclusive broadcasting rights to EPL Sunday matches in Vietnam for only VSTV, which owns K+ channel.

MP & Silva asked to meet with the MoIC to prove its exclusive broadcasting rights of EPL matches in Vietnam. In the meeting on August 26, the Ministry of Information and Communications confirmed that K+ channel holds the exclusive broadcasting rights to Sunday matches of the EPL in Vietnam.

The Ministry of Information and Communications will announce an official statement to local broadcasters as well as Thailand’s True Sport channel to stop airing EPL Sunday matches in Vietnam soon. Though True Sport is licensed in Vietnam, but they have to obey copyright rules. MoIC will ask local broadcasters to not take EPL Sunday matches from True Sport, Hai explained.

MP & Silva’s representative Beatrice Lee said that her company was satisfied with the meeting’s result and pleased with local state agencies in their intervention in the copyrights law violation. MP & Silva are glad if K+ reaches agreements to share Sunday matches with other broadcasters, she said.

Beatrice Lee said her company is willing to distribute these matches as well as Liga or Serie A with other channels in Vietnam, but K+ bought the exclusive rights to air these matches.

In Vietnam, MP & Silva distributed broadcasting rights of Saturday and Monday matches to several channels. However, the Hanoi Cable Television (HCTV) channel and some provincial channels still air live Sunday matches from Thailand’s True Sport channel.

HCTV stated it will stop airing Sunday matches once K+ and MP & Silva prove their exclusive rights in Vietnam or prevent True Sport from airing Sunday matches in Vietnam.

K+ won a contract for a three-year exclusive right to broadcast the world’s most popular football leagues. When K+ holds the exclusive right, Vietnamese audience, though having paid for other paid TV services, will have to pay more VND1.5 million for a decoder and monthly subscription fee of VND 250,000 to K+ to see these matches.

Vietnamese TV channels that broadcast the EPL: Saturday and Monday matches on Bong Da TV and The Thao TV (Vietnam Cable Television – VCTV), VTC-HD (VTC), HTV2 (HCMC Television), SCTV15 (Saigon Tourist Cable TV), K+ (VSTV) and H1 and H2 (Hanoi Television).
